At the Democratic convention, as Hillary beams, the crowd chants "Lock him up!"

I'd fallen asleep by then, because it was my bedtime and because I'd already watched a bunch of speeches. As I texted to my son, "I can't just be watching some coach."

But this morning I was reading "'There Was a Whole Lot of Sass for a Gathering of Democrats': The Best and Worst Moments From Night 1 of the Convention" (full access link), with the NYT opinion writers giving individual opinions on concise topics, and, asked what was the worst moment, Charles M. Blow said, "It dragged on too long — and the unfortunate image of delegates chanting 'Lock him up' from the convention floor."

So I'm watching — and sharing — the relevant clip. Hillary looks great and seems to be doing what needs to be done, at least in that minute. I wonder what Blow thinks is so "unfortunate" about the delegates chanting "Lock him up." That criminally prosecuting the former President was deeply wrong or, at least, reflects badly on Democrats? That it reminds us of the chant "Lock her up" and creates a lot of dissonance for Democrats?

Rigged, sabotaged election. Hillary is the author of the Russia collusion hoax. We don’t have actual elections on the Federal level. I’m tired of people pretending this shit is real.

Breezy said...

I didn’t watch her speech, but Hillary did look a lot better than she has in recent months. Her typical tent dress replaced with a nice suit. Ozempic perhaps? So I agree she looked great. Nonetheless, she is deplorable on the inside.

Old and slow said...

She does smug very well. Less likable than Harris, but much more able. Christ, I'd be relieved to have Bill back at this point. If Trump manages to win this thing AND get sworn in, it will give me a good dose of schadenfreude. But either way,I'm done letting presidential politics determine how I feel about things. These bastards will do what they do, and mostly the people of the US will be the losers. An occasional win sure does feel satisfying though.

Re Blow's comment ... when he's right, he's right.

Comey excused Hillary because 'no reasonable prosecutor' would bring a case, in rather direct contrast to the lawfare against President Trump.

Shouting Thomas said...

@Inga. Your side just tried to murder its opponent. When is this going to penetrate your lead skull? You’re the evil, bad guy. As bad as it can get. Shame on you.

Inga said...

So many good speeches! When Hillary was speaking I thought what a great president she would’ve been, how much less chaos and drama our nation would've had to endure. How much better she would’ve handled the nation’s Covid response, what a world of difference for the last 8 years. The awkwardness of Democrats chanting “lock him up” could be attributed to us wanting not to sink to the level of Trumpism, we are better than that, but to see the look on Hillary’s face was worth the moment.

The young Congresswomen AOC and Jasmine Crockett speeches were wonderful, AOC is so unpretentious, I loved her line of it being ok that some said she should go back to barkeeping and she saying yes, anyway because it’s honest work and should be honored. It was moving to see Crockett tear up when she recounted the time she was a new Congresswoman and met with Kamala Harris and Harris could see something was wrong and asked her about it and comforted her with words of encouragement.

Biden’s speech being pushed back by the delays of the crowd cheering so exuberantly and for such long times was regrettable, but Biden did well and it was a relief to see him get through it. It’s evident how much Democrats still care for him and what respect he gets for what he’s done for the nation. To see the love his family has for him is touching.

No doubt the speakers’ comments didn’t resonate with Trump supporters, but they did with millions of others, Democrats, liberals, independents, never Trumpers. And we are very motivated to vote

Inga said...

Oh shut up. You sound like one of the crazy boomers someone upstream just spoke about.

Let's see definitive proof of that claim. Oh wait, you have none.

Shouting Thomas said...

Shame on you, Inga. Let me repeat. Your side just tried to murder its opponent. You’re the evil Nazi punk. Quit evading your responsibility for this. You’ve embraced total, shameless evil. At least have the decency to be ashamed of yourself and go hide.

Shouting Thomas said...

No proof is needed, unless you’re blind and determined to evade responsibility. This war on Trump has been ceaseless for years. You were warned repeatedly that murder would be the outcome. The blood is on your hands, Nazi thug.

Todd said...

Guys, guys, it is not worth it. Inga is a "true believer". Nothing anyone says, no "proof", no discovery, admission, or facts will EVERY move her off of (D) awesome and (R) evil incarnate. All the "correct" people tell her so. The (D) folks can strip her of every freedom, every right, tax her into oblivion, replace her with illegal criminals, confiscate all her "stuff", and as long as the "good" people tell her it is OK AND she (and other women) have the option to terminate a child on demand, it is all good. You might as well try to reason with a 2 year old. She wants what she wants and NOTHING else matters.

Ambrose said...

Blow labels the chant as unfortunate because the Democrats like to hide their true selves during election season.

NYC prosecutor Bragg did not oppose Trump's recent request to delay sentencing until after the election. Presumably the "convicted felon" isn't moving the needle, and he's been told not to become a distraction. Of course, Judge Merchan might proceed with immediate sentencing anyway, and it would be ironic if that worked against the Democrats by sucking all the air out of Harris's campaign.

Shouting Thomas said...

Biden repeated the “Very fine people” hoax at the convention. Scott Adams has clearly and correctly stated that this is a direct call for Trump’s assassination.

Inga said...

Also powerful speeches were given by the women who recounted their personal experiences with not being able to get medical care due to the SC’s reversal of Roe vWade. Responsibility lays with those who thought it was a good idea to take away a women’s freedom of choice.

Biden’s speech being pushed back by the delays of the crowd cheering so exuberantly and for such long times was regrettable

In order to move Biden's speech from prime time to 11pm, there would have had to be five-minute ovations after half the lines of every speech - this did not happen. We watched the whole tedious affair, Walz's sad-clown face, Harris's remaining seated like a queen, delegates looking bored and disgruntled as things bogged down, and all. The only long cheering was when Harris, with utter predictability and after the news folk had just assured us all that although Trump had attended every night of the RNC, Harris wasn't expected to be there until Wednesday, took the stage. What a fun, joyful surprise! That one thing did get the long cheers. But not even five minutes.

Biden was scheduled late because they were afraid he'd crater. Wouldn't anyone be?

It would be heartbreaking to lose a child in the womb and, like every woman throughout history to whom this has ever happened until the last few decades, to have to wait for your dead baby to be born. And it would be awful to be pregnant at 12 by your stepfather. But neither of these is what drives the abortion-rights side, and we all know it.

Colleen Brown said...

Thank you for pointing that out. He also said that hate has no safe harbor. I guess he forgot about what happened on many college campuses last spring. Jewish college students would disagree with Biden.

Jamie said...

I was amused by her trying to paint the Republican side as anti-ordinary-job. Sure, honey. It's Republicans who would look down on you for tending bar.

Republicans do of course look down on her, but it's not because she was a bartender. It's because she's a bartender who believes she's a great economist despite her embrace of economic ideas that have been demonstrated again and again not to work. My daughter has a couple of friends like this - an ordinary young couple, working class, no college, but the guy is sure he's a financier and regularly pronounces on what everyone in their circle should do with their money - much of which involves tax evasion, because he doesn't believe that you're liable for taxes on a cash business.

But AOC is going to be president one day, God help us. She's as populist as Trump but without the acumen.

The awkwardness of Democrats chanting “lock him up” could be attributed to us wanting not to sink to the level of Trumpism, we are better than that

It's profoundly stupid for the Democrats to exhibit their partisan hatred of their opponent while they, literally, are trying to lock him up with four simultaneous criminal prosecutions in an election year. It's astoundingly dumb. All the Trump haters are already voting for Harris. Now you're trying to convince moderates, independents, and other people to vote Democratic. And what do you do? Your party openly and joyfully mocks the seriousness of the criminal justice system. Your party undercuts any possibility that the Trump trials are fair and unbiased. Anyone watching immediately understands that these trials are partisan and political. And they also might start to suspect that they are under-handed and dirty.

And it's ridiculous to compare this to the cheers at Trump rallies, when Trump himself never arrested or prosecuted his enemies. We might agree that the cheers are in bad taste. But there's a huge difference between over-heated rhetoric at a campaign rally and the willful misuse of our criminal justice system.

If you want evidence that these Trump trials are staged, phony, and fake, this stupid cheer at the DNC convention is evidence of what's really going on. Wake up, Inga.

⬆️ Harris’ challenge is to recognize from the outset that the goal is not just to win the WH but to hold it and build a majority in the houses. In order to do that she must mute the radical wing of her party and avoid promoting policies that people see through like no tax on tips or new home owner assistance.

People instinctively know there is no free lunch and these policies either shift costs or perversely enrich existing homeowners. The UK just tried the latter policy and proved it doesn't work. If she can pull this off, defuse spending and not attack success she can win the middle votes. I watched a few minutes of the DNC (beginning) last night and it didn't fill me with hope.

Two of the women were extremely ill. They were in no condition to travel.

“ Zurawski says she and her husband were elated when she learned she was pregnant in 2022, after months of fertility treatments. However, in her 18th week, she suffered complications and was later diagnosed by her doctor with an “incompetent cervix” and told that a miscarriage was inevitable and she was also at a high risk of an infection.

She was also told an abortion was not an option following the Supreme Court’s overruling of Roe v. Wade as Texas had passed a near total ban on abortions. Medical providers who perform abortions face a life sentence unless the pregnancy poses a risk to the life of the mother.
As a result, Zurawski had to wait until she developed sepsis, a life-threatening condition that causes the body to overreact to infection, potentially leading to organ failure. Only then were the doctors comfortable enough that Zurawski’s life was sufficiently in enough danger for them to legally perform an abortion, which they did. However, the infection also led to a three-day stay in intensive care and also impacted her ability to have more children in the future.
“What I went through was nothing short of barbaric.”

They write to me saying, ‘What happened to you happened to me.’ Sometimes they’re miscarrying, scared to tell anyone, even their doctors. Our daughters deserve better.”

And a third woman, Hadley Duvall, who was raped by her stepfather when she was a child, spoke of the pain she felt at the idea that she could have been forced to give birth to a child at the age of 12.

In a line that prompted gasps on the convention floor, Ms. Duvall, looking directly into the television cameras, quoted former President Donald J. Trump’s description of states’ passing abortion bans as a “beautiful thing” and asked, “What is so beautiful about a child having to carry her parent’s child?”‘
