What is "disgusting" to J.D. Vance?

I only found one appearance of "disgusting" in "Hillbilly Elegy": "my urine turned a disgusting brown shade" (page 183).

Here's what motivated me to look, from "JD Vance Hits Back at Jennifer Aniston, Defending ‘Childless Cat Ladies’ Remarks/The 'Friends' actress, who has been open about her fertility struggles, recently criticized Mr. Vance’s 2021 comments on social media" (NYT):
In [an Instagram] post, which drew widespread attention, [Jennifer Aniston], who has been open about her fertility struggles, wrote, “Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day.”...

“Hollywood celebrities say, ‘Oh, well, JD Vance, what if your daughter suffered fertility problems?’” Mr. Vance said [on “The Megyn Kelly Show” on SiriusXM]. “Well, first of all, that’s disgusting because my daughter is 2 years old. And second of all, if she had fertility problems, as I said in that speech, I would try everything I could to try to help her because I believe families and babies are a good thing.”

Why did he say "that's disgusting"? Was it some kind of notion that Aniston was sexualizing the toddler?! Aniston was being very tactful and delicate, and he's saying it's disgusting? That's very strange. I'm getting a gynophobia vibe.

Here's the Vance quote that provoked Aniston: "We are effectively run in this country… by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made."

By the way, I've seen Aniston's cat, and it is disgusting:

Vance should stick to the story that he was referring to the women who run the country; instead he took the bait and is allowing his limited remarks to be applied to all childless women. We all have childless relatives who are childless for many different reasons. He needs to correct course ASAP.

"Childless cat ladies." Supposedly disrespectful to childless women. Amazing how descriptive words have become insults. I'd have thought the "cat lady" bit was about the pink pussy hat women and was snide.

All of Hollywood sexualizes children. That's all that goes on in Hollywood. Of COURSE he is suggesting that. These people are evil, and we're going to stop them. We're sorry you're upset about your Friends.

He said "that's disgusting" because the celeb didn't do her homework and made remarks at his 2 year old child. We do know he wasn't talking about women with fertility problems. He was talking about the AWFL cat ladies who love abortion, and hate America, the nuclear family and all that America stands for. JA is just another Hollywood lib who, if she had children, who try to transition them. See, I CAN make things up by reading minds also. GYNO BS.

I don’t think he was reviewing Rachel’s Instagram Post and analyzing what she might have meant by it, looking so see if she’s “tactful and delicate”. I bet he was just asked about it out of the blue (probably hadn’t seen it at all) and he took it as weird on first hearing it because his daughter’s 2. Is find it weird too.

Why did you jump to vagina-phobia? Seems like an over reaction.

Did Rachel know his daughter was only two? If so, maybe her comments weren’t as “tactful and delicate” as you give her credit for.

This made me think of the time Obama referred to his daughter and said “I wouldn’t want her burdened with a baby” (maybe not an exact quote). I found it a little weird he did that (thought it was a little “sexualizing”), but at least she was a teen if I recall.

James K said...

Pretty sure he was just using "disgusting" as a synonym for "outrageous" and "inappropriate." Nothing to do with sexualizing anything, just that her comments were completely off base. Vance had made clear at the time he was not talking about women with infertility issues. He was disgusted at her smear.

Leland said...

I think is a dumb to get in cat fights with b celebrities. That said, I think parents of 2 year olds see them as just that and not the future when they will be grown adults. I would think sexualizing 2 years old is disgusting, but I understand being cruelly neutral to the party of LGBTQ+, but I don’t see a gynophobia vibe. Then again, that same party thinks any disagreement, so I’m getting a partiality vibe.

How many straight men are vagina phobic? I suspect it is a small minority. Most men spend considerably time, money and effort in vagina-philic pursuit.

It is the woman attached to the vagina that we are often phobic about. I would say with good reason sometimes. I won't get in an elevator alone with a woman I don't know. It is not her vagina that I am afraid of.

Jennifer has her fertility problems---and I have sympathy for that, being the grandfather of two children born through IVF (some women get a late start in the baby game) But she fails to understand how a man who comes from--and survives--a truly dysfunctional family--will be outraged by even a passing slight or reference to his family or his children. J.D. made it out of that world and is happily protecting his own family and children. Jennifer--you didn't build the family that J.D. and his wife have, and you can't--and shouldn't talk about it.

Not only strange, but…weird.

It does smack of gynophobia, if the thought of his two year old daughter growing up and one day be a reproductive adult woman is disgusting to him, how is he going to react when she hits puberty and begins menstruating? He seems to see women who have children as fertility goddesses, and childless women as shameful creatures of some sort.

I think Vance would do better if he simply said something like: "I think it's important that Americans bear and raise children. It's the most gratifying role that any of us can take on, as humans. As a society, we have a declining birth rate, and that's a problem. And if fertility is an issue, it's important that people have all the options to address health-related problems or explore adoption, or otherwise embark on the joys of raising a family. This is a given. A society that provides a healthy, secure environment to raise families is a society that will grow and develop into something even better.

The statement being spotlighted is taken out of context; it was made over 3 years ago and was a sarcastic reference to a kind of frustrated, emotionally-unstable single woman that struggles to find fulfillment in today's society. I think these circumstances are highly unfortunate. But I want the public policies I'm governed by, to be created by people that share my values and understand the plight of today's American families."

I just read the wiki entry on Ella Wilcox the cat lady whose picture Althouse features just below. I'd like to pass on the readers here why I find her disgusting....She has a pretty, sensitive face and, by some measures, she is not at all like a cat lady. She had a successful marriage and an apparently successful life. She didn't make the big money that an attractive poet can nowadays make on Only Fans, but she traveled widely and her work was recognized....Here's the parts that are more typical of a cat lady: She and her husband were in love and shared an interest in Theosophy. Well and good, but when he failed to make contact with her after his death, she fell into the slough of despond. That's the stuff of cat ladies..... She became a vegetarian and an advocate of animal rights. Again well and good, but please take note of the hat that she is wearing in the picture posted below. It's a fine creation with a plumed crest worthy of an exotic bird in heat. That's what I find disgusting. I imagine quite a few birds gave their lives under distressing circumstances to add that bit of finery to her wardrobe. I genuinely enjoy her poetry, but I think this bit of hypocrisy should go into our judgement of her as a human being. It's hard to live outside of the mores of your era, but that bit of tacit bird slaughter should not pass unnoticed. True feminists should not celebrate her, nor indeed any ladies that wore such hats.

Vance has a few positives for the hard core MAGA crowd. But they won't decide the election as their votes are priced in. The up-to-now-undecided will. There is probably only about 5-7% of the electorate that will shift it either way. A guy who can turn on a dime on any issue and otherwise has weird statements and positions (the article doesn't even mention that he is close to Project 2025) might be just too much on top of Trump who is too old and weird in his own right.

Vance explicitly singled out women who choose to be childless.

He specifically talked about women/couples who have problems conceiving and helping them get help. He is clearly in favor of supporting fertility treatments.

Jennifer Aniston is a cunt. The "What if your kid had this awful thing happen to them" argument is garbage and made in bad faith.

The main problem is that Aniston and her fellow democrat travelers are constantly wishing for bad things to happen to their political opponents. Everyone knows that if JD Vance's 2 year old daughter actually did have fertility problems democrats like Anistion and Inga would be all out there yelling "see! see! I was right!" and it would make them happy. It is because they are terrible people who hate children and have lots of cats.

Obama shutting down school choice programs while sending his kids to private school is the counterexample of when that type of argument is made in good faith. He actually hurt children with his policies.

I have heard the Dems (Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, Harris, Schiff, etc.) say extremely false and indeed defamatory about the GOP's voter base, namely, that they are racist. Yup. Anyone that disagrees with Ann is a Gynophobe. Good argument Ann. You should be proud of it.

Here's the Vance quote that provoked Aniston: "We are effectively run in this country… by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made."

Let us look at the actual quote from 3 years ago since people like Ann want to be dishonest about this:

“We’re effectively run in this country—via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs—by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too,”

“How does it make any sense that we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”

Women who try to have children and cannot are not making a choice so they are obviously excluded from his comment.

Aniston brought the fertility issue in and attacked Vance's 2 year old daughter.

First off this attack is completely dishonest because Vance clearly talked about women who made a choice to not have children. Stop participating in this dishonesty.

Second take your "Aniston was being very tactful and delicate" civility crap and flush it down the toilet with all of the "too bad the shooter missed" and "MAGA is a threat to democracy" crap where it belongs. There is nothing tactful or delicate about anything these people are doing.

I think that the cat ladies (and the childless-by-choice gays) assume that open borders will solve that. But they, being bad at math, don’t see the disconnect between young, lower wage earning immigrants supporting a cohort of mostly white retirees who paid in at much higher rate and thus expect to be paid out at rates that said immigrants cannot bear.
People like Aniston don’t even need SS; she (they?) see kids as middle-aged trophies.Dads are not required.

Why? Did he shower with her?

Why did he say "that's disgusting"? Was it some kind of notion that Aniston was sexualizing the toddler?! Aniston was being very tactful and delicate, and he's saying it's disgusting? That's very strange. I'm getting a gynophobia vibe.

It would be disgusting if talking about a two year old son, too.

Don't talk about kids having kids, that's not difficult.

And there's a video going around if what he termed "throat clearing", where he stated "I'm not talking about people who can't have kids. I know some, and I appreciate their pain." Or words to that effect.

The 'disgusting' comment probably comes from talking about his 2 year old child having babies, or not. Pretty simple, really.

And also, "childless cat lady" doesn't mean that person is not physically capable of having children. Indeed, that's the whole point, I believe, to the insult.

As a father of a formerly 2 year old daughter, I see the question as disgusting because it uses an innocent party in a debate not about infertility, but about self-imposed childlessness. Aniston and the interviewer essentially asked, "What if your child suffers?" when the issue is about choices freely made by adult women. That is disgusting.
