The pervasiveness of "weird" in the mind of Tim Walz.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz — in the running for VP — has gotten attention over the past week for purveying the word "weird," but he was calling Republicans "weird" a year ago.

Here's something I blogged August 21, 2023: "Who's the 'most normal' in this 'pretty weird group'?":

On "Meet the Press" yesterday, the Democratic Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, was invited to talk about the Republican Governor of North Dakota, Doug Burgum, who is running for the Republican nomination for President.... [H]ere's what Walz had to say about Burgum....

... The minute they all step on the [debate] stage, the American people have lost. Are they going to debate who can ban the most books? Who – you know, Doug, he didn't tell you this, but he signed a six week abortion ban, which is hugely unpopular and simply wrong in America. So yeah, we're friends, but I hate to see it go down this road. Those are very simple questions about – you were asking about the President, about the indictments and so I was a little bit tongue-in-cheek. And the sad part is, I do believe that Doug is probably the most normal of these. That's a pretty weird group of folks that are going to be on the debate stage. Doug's a pretty good guy, but he's trapped in a Republican party with no ideas.

No ideas? Come on. At least give them credit for having weird ideas.

Anyway, it seems that "normal" is a very high standard this time around. But it's strange for Democrats to call the whole group of Republican candidates "weird" when, for so long, they've been stressing the singular weirdness of Trump. I'm very susceptible to the argument that we need a President who's at least normal, but there's something abnormal — perverse — about generating the feeling that all the candidates are weird.

so i went to wiki, to find a list of famous covers.. While there: THIS IS WHAT I FOUND OUT

musicians on the record include Herbie Lovelle on drums, Billy Butler, Bobby Comstock, and Al Gorgoni on guitar, and Bob Bushnell overdubbing on an electric and an upright bass. This song also features a young Ronnie Dio on the trumpet.

That's RIGHT! RONNIE JAMES DIO played trumpet! Played trumpet ON MY BOYFRIENDS BACK

I just can't believe that They're going with "weird." I mean... just look at the pictures. Just read the headlines - you don't even have to dig into the articles most of the time. It's the most up-is-down propaganda imaginable.

So I have concluded that this is yet another stress-test to see how far They can push Their influence. They have already erased, in front of our eyes, all Their panic over the prospect of Biden's withdrawal from the race and Their being forced to accept Harris as Their candidate - now she's what They were waiting for all along. Just before that, They erased, as we watched, Their despair at Biden's debate performance - despair so deep that it made Them admit on live television that his ability to fulfill his functions as president was in question. Now, he's a brave and selfless patriot who is of course perfectly competent to hold his office for the next six months - he only withdrew as a candidate in order to unite his party and fight off the Existential Threat To Democracy...

... that They are now simply calling "weird." The side that celebrates polycules and thinks kids need to know about oral sex and thinks the term "master bedroom" is violence now defines "weird" as an Existential Threat To Democracy.

Why? I can't escape thinking that it's because They got caught, about Biden's capacity. So they're stress-testing, to see whether Their tried and true message coordination still works.

At least it was in 2016, when it won, and 2020, when it lost. There is no reason to think that Trump isn't still competent, even if he is getting pretty old.

He may have said it first but "Weird" is obviously the latest journolist word. We all remember "Gravitas" that thing that Bush lacked and how odd a word like that, a word you might find in a scholarly work, showed up in seemingly every news report. It's like all of these supposedly educated people have never heard of a thesaurus.

The funny thing it that this is such a Democrat talking point tell they just never seem to get.

Balfegor said...

I think voters already know and understand that Trump is kind of a weirdo, in a lot of different ways. I'm pretty sure a majority of voters just don't care -- even the people pushing this "weird" label don't really care since they oppose him for other reasons and were generally happy to support much weirder weirdos in the Biden administration, like that kleptomaniac transvestite who kept stealing womens' luggage at airports.

They're probably thinking back fondly to Obama's success at painting Romney as weird thanks to various Mormon religious practices (e.g. underwear), but I think that was effective more because Obama was deliberately exploiting a deep reservoir of anti-Mormon bigotry in the American public. They don't have that with Trump -- he's just what he is.

Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers movie franchise wouldn't be recognized as a satirical character.

That, my friends, is what is considered "normal" in America today. I remember slogans from the '70s Go Climb a Rock, Question Authority, Why be Normal? and then in the 80's, my favorite, Shit Happens.

When will the new T-shirt appears that say "I'm a weird deplorable--Voting for Trump/Vance".

Each time the left tries to create a new narrative against Trump supporters, it seems to backfire. I suspect this one will as well.

On social media, people are posting pictures of Vance and his very normal looking family and then pictures of Buttigegg feeding his purchased infant with fake breasts. The caption is "Who is weird here?". They are posting pictures of Kamala surrounded by trans-GIBLETS next to pictures of Trump with everyday Americans with the same type caption.

A democrat posted a picture of Vance with Nevada Senate candidate Sam Brown who was disfigured in military action. Their comment was "Republicans are so weird". I just don't think most voters are going to buy into the entire "weird" thing. It reminds me of 12 year old middle-school kids trying to ostracize the newest student at school.

YOU. I’ve seen pictures of straight fathers doing skin to skin contact with their newborns. No one was pretending going through a birthing process. What a weird take on fathers doing skin to skin care for their newborns.

“The benefits of skin-to-skin contact for dads include bonding with their baby, feeling more confident as a father, and feeling a surge of protectiveness toward their baby. Dads can also pass on the same benefits as moms do in terms of helping to regulate their baby's temperature and heartbeat.”

From another thread:

Kevin: "It’s clear the establishment is out to neutralize the negative of Kamala’s inappropriate laughter.

Labeling the Republicans as weird is part of this effort."

Correct.

Internal polling shows the independents/working class/industrial and blue collar voters in the key swing states are rejecting Kamala-la-la-la-la as a bizarre weirdo who does not and cannot connect with normal voters in any way.

The "weird" campaign by the New Soviet Democraticals is an attempt to mitigate this reality and naturally the New Soviet Democratical Party knows its base voters like Inga will say whatever they direct her to say.

Recall it took Inga YEARS after the contents of Ashley Biden's diary came out which documented Joey dementia's sexual sickness before Inga paid lip service to "normal-ness" and wrote that she did not approve of that...right up until biden began to run for reelection at which time Inga shut right the heck up about it and defended Biden.

So the head of the Heritage Foundation steps down but Project 2025, and all the Trump Republicans who wrote it, are still in place. And we are expected to think this represents the 'demise' of these noxious ideas? It's possible that the Leopards Will Eat Your Face Party fully intends to eat your face.

Trump’s genius is being both provocative and not actually saying anything which offends specific voter groups. In other words, he’s really a very old fashioned style politician. Trained by Roy Cohn. Who persuaded Joe McCarthy to take a strong position on a provocative issue—one sure to get headlines in 1954–but which had no real voter support in 1954, namely communism.

That’s Trump’s core skill. He’s against illegal immigration. Who exactly is offended? However, Project 2025 is taking real positions on real issues. Each position offends say 5% of the US. Take 20 positions and 100% are offended. Not at all Trump’s style.

Talk of Trump and his ‘base’ has completely missed that that’s what he’s doing.

Fortunately, my sense is the Democrats have finally figured it out. It took them long enough. Which is why Project 2025 has been, and will continue to be, so effective for them. It attached real tangible stupid positions directly to Trump. On issues that are real for specific voter groups. No wonder he doesn’t like that.

Vance similarly has been a disaster. Once again, he takes real positions on real issues as opposed to the normal meaningless Trump basically harmless blather—offending actually very few. Except of course those offended by pure nonsense. Representing sadly not a lot of any electorate.
