Whiskeybum said...: Tomorrow, July 31, 2024, will mark the 80th anniversary of the disappearance at sea and assumed death of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the writer and aviator known for The Little Prince and many other writings, mostly concerning flight. The anniversary of his death was brought to my attention after recently seeing a commemorative inscription in the Panthéon in Paris.

Looking into his bio online, I learned that Saint-Exupéry wrote The Little Prince (and other works) in the United States while he lived in New York during the early part of WWII. He was here in the country on a personal mission to convince the US to enter the war against Nazi Germany. The Little Prince would be published in the US before it was published in France due to the war.

He returned to France in 1943 and joined the Free French Air Force, flying reconnaissance missions in the Mediterranean (he was granted an exemption for being eight years over the age limit for pilots). His plane went missing on July 31, 1944; the wreckage was finally found in 1998 in the Mediterranean Sea near Marseilles along with a bracelet bearing the names of Saint-Exupéry, his wife, Consuelo (‘the Rose’ from The Little Prince) de Saint-Exupéry, and his publisher.; 7/30/24, 7:30 PM

The case is well worn and there was a pit on the balance cap jewel from the pivot, so I suspect someone bought it new, never serviced it, then stuffed it away when it stopped working. Maybe 80-130 people walking down Vine orchestrated by this dark maestro, with 4 cars as light armor, solemnly engaged in scripted call and response, punctuated by drumbeat, "when they shoot us in Gaza, what do we do -- Fight Back!" Lots of flags and shout outs to BLM and transgenderism.They repeated for Los Angeles, Michigan, and New York. It was like a New Orleans funeral, inverted to maximize the presence of death.

I don't have a cell phone AT ALL. I used to have a Trac phone, but I always forgot to charge it, so it actually was useless. Our house has no land line. Back in the day a serious rainstorm cost us our land line, just as Verizon’s techies started a lengthy strike. Consequently we learned over the weeks and months that we could get along just fine without a land line, so when I retired and we downsized to a home in the Shenandoah Valley we decided against having one. We put in a conduit for a land line from the telephone pole to our home so we could add a land line at some future date. The only cost was the plastic conduit; the trench for it was already dug so the installation cost was nothing.
