"The Democrats are making up stories that I said Milwaukee is a 'horrible city.' This is false, a complete lie..."

"... just like the Laptop from Hell was a lie, Russia … was a lie, and so much more.... It’s called disinformation, and that’s all they know how to do. I picked Milwaukee, I know it well. It should therefore lead to my winning Wisconsin. But the Dems come out with this fake story, just like all of the others. It never ends. Don’t be duped. Who would say such a thing with that important state in the balance?"

Said Trump, on Truth Social, quoted in "Trump to stage Wisconsin rally days after calling Milwaukee a 'horrible city'/Ticket-only event follows unflattering remark about state’s biggest city that will host Republican national convention" (The Guardian).

He also said this on Fox 6 News, which shows that he said something about Milwaukee: "I think it was very clear what I meant. We’re very concerned with crime. I love Milwaukee. But as you know the crime numbers are terrible, and we have to be very careful. But, I was referring to, also, the election."

The very day (days ago, now) that the "Milwaukee" story broke, I compared it to the "Shithole countries" story. Where it was very reliably reported that Trump had said it, and then we saw the TrumpWorld reaction. Half the TrumpFans thought that it was great, and that Trump was damned right to call them shithole countries. And the other half of TrumpFans claimed that of course Trump didn't say it. There again, Trump didn't deny it at first. Only when the blowback started to look bad, did Trump say, "They are lying about me." At that point 100% of TrumpFans pivoted; the new position wasn't "He was right to say it," and it wasn't "He never said it." The new position was, "Who cares? Only the libs care about it."

Aren't there a dozen similar stories in the pathetic history of the Trump presidency?

At 11:47 Judge Michael Gabelman describes just how corrupt Wisconsin and in particular the 5 largest cities including Milwaukee are.

He also talks about how corrupt the newspaper in Wisconsin is. They are just openly lying at this point about pretty much everything.

There are 5 million people in Wisconsin. There are approximately 4 million people of voting age alive.

There are 7 million people on the voter roles and you cannot access the voter roles without paying 5 figures and even then they restrict access.

It is pretty obvious that Trump had hundred's of thousands more actual voters in Wisconsin that Biden.

Jake Sherman reported the story first, and he used a full quote, in quotation marks: "Milwaukee, where we are having our convention, is a horrible city." Sherman is standing by his reporting; NBC has confirmed it from multiple sources.

Here's where a thoughtful Trump defender might start. Start with EXACTLY what Trump said. Did he say Milawaukee was horrible? Did he say Milwaukee crime was horrible? That Milwaukee election operations were horrible? That there was a park in Milwaukee that was horrible? And when you do get a clear, verbatim readout on what Trump actually now claims, compare that to the 6 or 8 different House Republican claims about what was said.

I really do love these stories more than I should. Not because I care too much about the substance (because I don't care about any substance with Trump) but rather because this is one of those stories that puts another Trump lie in the spotlight, and it divides TrumpWorld.

Ann's post had no direct info. Her Guardian link had no direct info. Your link goes to a Twitter post. The local NBC affiliate attributes it to...the same Twitter post.

I found a CNN article that quotes "a source." And says this:

Rep. Derrick Van Orden, a Wisconsin Republican who was in the room, made clear to CNN that Trump was “specifically referring to crime in Milwaukee” and not the city itself.

So, a rational reader can conclude he said something close to the rumor, close enough to be twisted by partisans. Which in this case includes the media.

This is actually a huge disagreement within the community.

All the heavy funding goes to the deeply theoretical math side of the house. Practical physics is happening on the materials science and compute side.

According to the Wisconsin Independent

Milwaukee, where we are having our convention, is a horrible city,” Trump told House Republicans in a meeting at the Capitol Hill Club, according to Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman. Members of Wisconsin's congressional delegation (who were in the room) confirmed the comment to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other news outlets. Milwaukee will host the Republican National Convention from July 15-18.

Trump first claimed he was talking about crime in the city.

“I think it was very clear what I meant. I said we’re very concerned with crime. I love Milwaukee. I have great friends in Milwaukee. But it’s, as you know, the crime numbers are terrible, and we have to be very careful,” Trump told Fox News.

Crime has actually dropped in Milwaukee this year, with homicides dropping 39%, robberies dropping 14%, and motor vehicle theft dropping 10%, the Milwaukee Police Department announced in April.

Trump later denied he had called Milwaukee horrible altogether, writing in a Truth Social post: “The Democrats are making up stories that I said Milwaukee is a ‘horrible city.’

Tomorrow he will have another story and some cultist friends among House Republicans will lie through their teeth for him again. But the billboard reminders are all over the city - one is outside the Baird Center, site of the GOP convention downtown for all the world to see.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

So the problem with tracking down that quote is that it was a closed meeting with house Republicans. Every media outlet put the word "horrible" in quotes, so someone must have said he used that word but we have no direct evidence of the context.

There is this story from CNBC a week ago

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/13/trump-calls-milwaukee-a-horrible-city-ahead-of-republican-convention.html

containing these nuggets:

1. "Several Republican lawmakers also denied he made the comments in the meeting, held at the Capitol Hill Club." {Translation the media got the quote wrong.]

2. Wisconsin Republican said: “I was in the room. President Trump did not say this,” Steil said. “There is no better place than Wisconsin in July.”

3. Other congressional Republicans sought to contextualize Trump’s comments, with Rep. Derrick Van Orden, of Wisconsin, saying the former president was specifically referring to the city’s crime rate. While others reportedly said Trump was speaking about election integrity. [Note, those are both in Trump's remarks today.]

Bottom line: the media like to repeat ad nauseam (like Rich and Chuck) stories Democrats tell them, even with no evidence, even after people actually in the meeting "dispute Trump said that."

Reaction: Fuck the media. Trump has a better record of truth telling than his media foes.

We know our New Soviet Democraticals looooooooooooooove ANY LIE as long as it is packaged in a hoax dossier. It's like catnip for them!

Actually, they looooooooooove ANY LIE. The hoax dossier format just makes it that much more enjoyable for them.

Crime has actually dropped in Milwaukee this year, with homicides dropping 39%, robberies dropping 14%, and motor vehicle theft dropping 10%, the Milwaukee Police Department announced in April.

What happens to the crime rate when people stop reporting crimes because they don't expect the police to do anything about it?

Asking for a friend.

Alleged lawyer Chuck, are you familiar with "he said, she said" legal cases based on nothing more than hearsay, and the difficulties they present?

Well, this is a "he said, he said" situation.

The claimed quote was delivered during a closed session with House Republicans. The "quote" is thus hearsay, straight up.

So, produce hard evidence other than what a hostile reporter or a newspaper CLAIMS Trump said, and you will have a point. Otherwise you're making an assertion "without evidence", as the lying MSM likes to say.

btw: I hear those assless chaps you wore in the Gay Pride parade were the hit of the event.

"Assless chaps" sounds like a sex reassignment surgery gone horribly wrong. Of course, that could be where they get brains to implant into leftists.

It is worse than that, it is what a hostile reporter claims someone who was there heard Trump say. Double hearsay. Also, don't forget that the way the mainstream media works is that this reporter will give the story to a reporter from a different outlet and then use that outlet as a "confirmatory source." The whole Russia-gate story turned out to be one big circle-jerk.

Sheesh gadfly. The Wisconsin Independent? It’s not even a real newspaper.

I meant to say this earlier; kudos to Althouse on crafting this blog-post. Specifically, for the inclusion of Trump’s own after-the-fact remark where he quite apparently said something derogatory about Milwaukee, which Trump wanted to try to clean up in a particular way.

So many Trump defenders among Althouse’s commenters; surely one of you can state very specifically what it is that Trump actually said.

Chuck's link did not address this. Is Jacob Sherman saying HE, Jacob Sherman, heard Trump say this?

One of my shirt-tail relatives was a guy named Frank Zeidler, who was the last Socialist mayor of Milwaukee. He was voted out in a particularly nasty election in 1960, then devoted himself to Good Works, and also running for President on the Socialist ticket. I had a chat with him at my grandmother's funeral in 1974, and he opined that Socialism was a particularly hard sell to a diverse electorate, which is what Milwaukee had by that time, but not so much when he was first elected. My parents' old neighborhood on the North Side is one I would advise nobody to visit.

Oh, so NOW, after all your serial lies and BS have been debunked and shoved back down your lying lefty gin and tonic soaked gullet, NOW you want a little help to know what was actually said?!

Too funny.

A little late to try and "reset" the conversation in a "lets not quibble about who killed who" sort of way.

As with your pathetic denial via edited video defense of Dementia-Glitch boy being led off stage by obambi, its time to MoveOn.com laddie to whatever your next set of lies will be.

I don't understand. You're saying you believe one of the commenters was actually there?

Original Mike said...

One of my comments disappeared, so forgive me for asking again. Is Jacob Sherman claiming he heard this himself?

Original Mike said...

Now another comment disappeared!

And a 3rd comment disappears. I don't think they've been unacceptable, but maybe I crossed some line.

Original Mike said...

OK, I'm going to be completely banal because I really want to know: Does anyone know if Jacob Sherman claims to have heard this himself?

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who heard Jacob say he heard about it himself. I guess it's pretty serious.

He admits he did not.

But Sherman knows precisely the quote the New Soviet Democraticals needed for their narrative....and that's all the New Soviet Democraticals have ever needed to create their fake quotes, lies and hoaxes....so that's what he delivered.

And he will be rewarded for this lie.

Thanks, Drago.

And let me go out on a limb and guess that Sherman will not identify who did hear it. Cuz that would be revealing sources.

Who, in the year 2024, gets taken in by this nonsense?

Chuck said...

I’m thoroughly satisfied with what I know to have been reported about what Trump said.

My reason for asking TrumpWorld what was said, is to see if there is yet (now five+ days later) a single coherent version of what Trump claims that he said. However many sources back any Trump story up, can be measured against Jake Sherman’s reporting (multiple sources), NBC News (multiple sources), and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (multiple sources). A Trump story, backed up by the likes of Derrick Van Orden and Glenn Grothman, can also be measured against what they previously claimed about the meeting.

effinayright said...

Chuck, hearsay, double hearsay, triple hearsay, quadruple hearsay.........

are still hearsay.

So just STFU.

Mason G said...

Or maybe it would be revealing that he just made it up because he knew he'd never be expected to back up his claim with- you know- actual facts.

Original Mike said...

Biden froze up again while speaking today of his new amnesty plan.

That is the strangest expression on his face that I've ever seen. It's as if his brain just froze completely and he lost all his memory, and his facial expression shows it. Biden is now getting progressively worse from one day to the next. At this rate, he will not make it to November. He may not even make it until the nominating convention in August. Heck, he may not make it until the debate next week. I can't believe Jill Biden is allowing much less encouraging this abuse of her husband.

Wanna have some fun with Chuckles?

Have him name the sources from this comment "However many sources back any Trump story up, can be measured against Jake Sherman’s reporting (multiple sources), NBC News (multiple sources), and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (multiple sources)."

So many sources! So very very very "many" "sources"! How many exactly? What are their names? What are their exact "quotes" from which Sherman derived his "Steele Dossier"-like Trump-"quote"?

Why not just claim you have eleventy-jillion sources?!

Remember, this is the very LLR-democratical Chuck that denies the video footage of obambi grabbing Dementia-Glitch boy's arm!

Such a fantastic thread for all LLR-democratical Chuck observers! It satisfies EVERYTHING we have come to know about Chuck over the last 9+ years!

The sources who confirmed the comment all got it from the same source. We've seen this before multiple times in regards to allegations against Trump. One reporter will make up a quote, there will be no video evidence to support it, but all media sites will say they have "confirmed" it. Confirming means they read or listened to Sherman's accusations. There is only once source.
