"Rahmatullah Anwari, 30, who used to grow rain-dependent wheat... borrowed money to feed his family of eight and..."

"... to pay for his father’s medical treatment. One of the villagers who had lent him money demanded his 8-year-old daughter in exchange for part of the loan. 'I have a hole in my heart when I think of them coming and taking my daughter,' he said. Mohammed Khan Musazai, 40, had bought cattle on loan.... The lenders took his land and also wanted his daughter, who was just 4 at the time. Nazdana, a 25-year-old who is one of his two wives and is the girl’s mother, offered to sell her own kidney instead — an illegal practice that has become so common that some have taken to referring to the Herat encampment as the 'one-kidney village.' She has a fresh scar on her stomach from the kidney extraction, but the family’s debt is still only half paid. 'They asked me for this daughter, and I’m not going to give her,' she said. 'My daughter is still very young. She still has a lot of hopes and dreams that she should realize.'"

And these are the cultures that the left is hell-bent on importing here.

Better than Somalia and Haiti, I guess...

And did you read the story today about Gambia re-instituting clitorectomies?

You never realize how good you have it here until you see what happens in other countries.

The message here: Driving your SUV causes 4 YO girls to be sold as child brides to pay off debts.

Maybe the message should be: Stable governments where people have economic freedom is the best way to prevent 4 YO girls (and kidneys) from being sold to pay off debts.

With all those horrifying stories and photos, the only angle is climate change? No mention of political or cultural issues. Shocking but not surprising.

I wondered if the Ukraine war impacted Afghanistan's wheat supply so I googled. Many articles from 2022 are similar to your blurb -- the drought, the famine, the selling of children. I'm curious why the NYT has decided to tell a two-years' long story now.

Weather. Climate change is assessed over 30-year periods. Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to catastrophic cultural changes in ethnic Springs.

The Taliban enjoyed the hospitality and safe harbor of Pakistan for 20 years to avoid being destroyed. And now they run Afghanistan again, and 4 year olds are used as collateral in loans to prevent starvation.

This is why Israel is ignoring the calls for a cease fire, until Hamas is eradicated. What the IDF will do about the leaderships of Hamas in Qatar will be interesting to see.

Unconditional surrender to face justsice, or death, is the just fate of such oppressors. Pity the US failed in that regard with the Taliban.

@tcrosse: Sons aren't marketable?

If you see stories about Christian school girls taken hostage around the Sahara desert in Africa (there are many), be aware that the Christian school boys were all killed.

The Obama administration played a shell game in reporting females as victims to distract from what was really going on. Young males are useful as disposable military pawns, but unwanted competition for adult men. Every warlord needs 47 virgin wives.

I don't know whether it's considered a rule or a guideline, but somewhere in the WaPo's 'how-to-write an article for this paper' summary it must say that whatever bad happens wherever in the world, it MUST be ascribed in some way to CLIMATE CHANGE.

"Afghani men selling their pre-school age daughters to wealthier pedophiles than themselves -- CLIMATE CHANGE!"

Got it. Has it occurred to them that this reflexive tic might actually enhance skepticism about CLIMATE CHANGE? Probably not. Of course, they don't actually know anyone who's the least bit skeptical about . . . you-know-what.

Twenty years and we couldn’t civilize that damned place. My sense is that sometime before the ten year mark we stopped bothering to try.

Say, you don't suppose every word of that is a lie, do you? Would the NYT print a lie? If it fit?

JAORE said...

Yeah, if due to CLIMATE CHANGE (hallowed be thy name) there is a drought in Nevada you can bet we'll see selling kidneys and four year old girls straight away.

Yep, yep. That climate change is a bad dude. Badder than Corn Pop.

If you're just going to bang out inane inanities inanely, (with two fingers, no doubt) why even bother?

Just wait. If the right in our country ever gets the power to really do and go as far as they'd like, we'll soon be asking if mandated clitorectomies will be covered by the major health insurance profiteers.

Kirk Parker said...

Rusty,

Yeah, invading worked so will the first time around.

And Big Mike, what on earth makes you think 20 years would be sufficient? Or 200?

Robert Cook said...

"Twenty years and we couldn’t civilize that damned place. My sense is that sometime before the ten year mark we stopped bothering to try."

Why would you think we were there to "civilize them?" That was never our purpose. We really didn't have any rational purpose, but, as usual, the War Dept. is convinced we have to always be occupying and/or bombing* far off lands in order to ensure everyone sees we have the biggest dick (and are the biggest dicks) in the world, and we are not to be fucked with. We will fuck with others at our pleasure...until we leave, having accomplished nothing but death and carnage.

But, hell, why not? We never learn.

Cookie thinks: "Just wait. If the right in our country ever gets the power to really do and go as far as they'd like, we'll soon be asking if mandated clitorectomies will be covered by the major health insurance profiteers."

I think it's mostly the lefty blue states which are mandating insurance coverage for the modern version of the clitorectomy, aka "bottom surgery". Take some mixed-up teens (and what teens aren't, to some degree), mix in some TikTok/LGBTQ++Pride/sex hormone treatments, and encourage the kids to destroy their sexual and reproductive futures, what could possibly go wrong?

While the rest of the world begins to close down this absurd and destructive trans-medical quackery, the Biden regime does its best to enable the butchers of WPATH to have their way with the kiddies. Gross!

And back to the subject of third-world shithole countries like Afghanistan: how absurd was it for the US embassy to run the LGBTQ++ Pride flag up its flagpole in Kabul, as if we had some special knowledge of sexual deviation to teach to the benighted peasants who invented Bacha Bazi?

Tina Trent said...

Robert Cook: I know a few guys who served there. The goal was to keep the warlords from taking over the refugee camps. It was horrifying, but they were there for a good purpose. Sincerely, can you understand our goal and their sacrifice?

Tina Trent said...

And, Robert, once relative order was restored in those camps, we gave refugee status to their most vulneable members. Unfortunately we had to negotiate and allow warlords in too to save the vulnerable.

How do I know this? World Relief, early '90's. What the hell were you doing but whining?

Sure seems like there is more evidence for that.

Robert, I passed the first anti-FGM state bill in the United States.
