**NYT Connections Spoiler**
It's weird, in the word game connections, when there are 8 words remaining, it is possible to deduce the correct grouping before perceiving the connection. Is it just that the connection is perceived subconsciously? In this case, it seems unlikely, but not impossible.
It's happened more than once, but today's was (not necessarily in this order):
Curl family lock flying
ringlet tress flea media
Somehow, I just knew, or confidently felt that 4 of those words belonged together, and when taken together, none of them belonged with any of the other 4. I'm not sure why, but it seemed obvious. Also, the other 4 didn't give me the same feeling of belonging together.
To strengthen the case against subconscious perception, I'm confident that I had no idea what a tress was. And even though I've heard the word ringlet before, I don't recall ever hearing it used in the context in which it was connected to the others.
Earlier in the game, I think I had a similar feeling about three of the words. The forth (lock) didn't fall into place until later.
Realizing what had just happened made me think that there was some kind of processing going on similar to what an LLM does.

I am starting to wonder whether the reason that the “intelligence community” was so paranoid about Trump being secretly controlled by Putin is because, as Wikileaks showed, we financed Navalny to disrupt Russian elections and hopefully become their president and sell out the Russian Federation like our boy Yeltsin did.

Their every accusation is a confession. They would never admit to their real reason, would they. This is maybe the basis of their absurd claim that they are “protecting democracy.” Of course Biden’s corruption is an attractive quality to to them, because it makes him easily controlled.

I stopped talking to her about it and we rarely see each other so too bad for me ( She’s awesome). Well times change and she told me last night that I nailed everything about the virus itself and the response. She says that what happened with the government was something she never thought possible and has destroyed her faith in the country. I don’t know how many national-class collegiate basketball coaches would risk their lives by breaking into a burning building with children trapped inside, but that’s what Lefty Driesell did one night back in 1973. Wikipedia summarizes the incdent pretty well:

On July 12, 1973, Driesell saved the lives of at least ten children from several burning buildings. He and two other men were surf fishing around midnight in Bethany Beach, Delaware when he saw flames coming from a seashore resort. Driesell broke down a door and rescued several children from the fire that eventually destroyed four townhouses. An eyewitness, Prince George's County circuit court Judge Samuel Meloy, said, "Let's face it, Driesell was a hero. There were no injuries and it was a miracle because firemen didn't come for at least 30 minutes."

It was typical of Lefty that he would downplay his accomplishment. Just fortunate to be in the right place to do something, or words to that effect. RIP Lefty Driesell.

The exterior of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City is seen in a nighttime file photo. The cathedral faces controversy for hosting a funeral Feb. 15, 2024, for trans activist and atheist Cecilia Gentili, who died Feb. 6 at age 52. (OSV News photo/Gregory A. Shemitz)
(OSV News) — Two days after St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City was filled with mourners for an irreverent “homecoming” funeral for a prominent activist who identified as transgender, the cathedral’s rector acknowledged that many people “have let us know they share our outrage over the scandalous behavior” that took place at the service.

Father Enrique Salvo said in a Feb. 17 statement that at New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan’s “directive, we have offered an appropriate Mass of Reparation.”

“The Cathedral only knew that family and friends were requesting a funeral Mass for a Catholic, and had no idea our welcome and prayer would be degraded in such a sacrilegious and deceptive way,” Father Salvo said.

Hundreds were on hand Feb. 15 to commemorate actress and author Cecilia Gentili, an Argentine native who had battled sexual abuse from age six and trafficking, as well as homelessness, heroin addiction and incarceration. The 52-year-old died Feb. 6 of unnamed causes at the Brooklyn, New York, home Gentili shared with partner Peter Scotto.

Gentili was the founder and principal consultant of Trans Equity Consulting and an advocate for the decriminalization of sex work.

Ceyenne Doroshow — founder and director of GLITS Inc. (Gays and Lesbians Living in a Transgender Society), organized the funeral. She told The New York Times that she approached St. Patrick’s since “it is an icon, just like (Gentili).”

Doroshow also told the newspaper that she had not advised pastoral staff that Gentili identified as transgender, saying, “I kind of kept it under wraps.”

The New York Times noted that “Mass cards and a picture near the altar showed a haloed Ms. Gentili surrounded by the Spanish words for ‘transvestite,’ ‘whore,’ ‘blessed’ and ‘mother’ above the text of Psalm 25.” Many mourners, the newspaper said, sported attire that included “glittery miniskirts and halter tops, fishnet stockings, sumptuous fur stoles and at least one boa sewed from what appeared to be $100 bills.”

“That such a scandal occurred at ‘America’s Parish Church’ makes it worse,” Father Salvo said in his statement. “That it took place as Lent was beginning, the annual forty-day struggle with the forces of sin and darkness, is a potent reminder of how much we need the prayer, reparation, repentance, grace, and mercy to which this holy season invites us.”

Father Salvo’s statement was released by Joseph Zwilling, director of communications for the Archdiocese of New York, who told OSV News Feb. 16 that “the cathedral is a functioning church that celebrates Mass, baptisms, weddings and funerals. And if somebody calls and … they’re trying to arrange a funeral for a Catholic, one assumes they are a Catholic. If the church can accommodate them, they try to do so.”

“We don’t conduct background checks on people who come to us looking to have a funeral,” said Zwilling, who said he had not been present at the cathedral during the ceremony.

According to a November 2023 interview, Gentili, a self-professed atheist, had been “reexamining (a) relationship with religion for a long time,” and had come “from a family of so many different faiths” that prevented Gentili from feeling “attached to any of them.”

Of course she did, her hubby's bacon comes from a pyramid-scheme company. Not only is she stupid, she's stupidly dishonest. She squashed the investigation to protect hubby's law business. Of course, she should have gone ahead with the investigation so hubby could have billed more hours to Herbalife, but I imagine pillow talk would have pretty constrained: "Sorry, dear, I can't talk about that. Attorney-client protection."

Multi-level marketing companies are more interested in pushing their distributors to purchase product than selling product to the public at large. IMO Lefty taking the fall for Len Bias, was totally unfair. For those unaware, Len Bias was a fabulous collegiate basketball player at the University of Maryland in the 1980s. He finished his four year career as a consensus first team All-American, and he was drafted second overall by the Celtics in 1986. He celebrated by trying cocaine — apparently for the first time because his first snort was also his last and he died of heart failure. At that point Bias was not still a member of the University of Maryland basketball team, so how Lefty was supposed to control his personal behavior is beyond me. Much was made of the fact that Bias hadn’t completed the number of credit hours to earn his degree. These days top collegiate programs arrange for their athletes to get bullshit degrees via no-show classes, but back then (and for many decades before) “scholar athletes” were more on their own.

Just another case of blaming a whitey for what a black person did.

It doesn't make me happy, Howard, to see the death and destruction that I warned against, coming to pass. What I wanted, and have advocated for, was a neutral Ukraine, a peaceful and non-aligned "borderland," if you will, between NATO and Russia.

One thing though about the fall of Avdeyevka, like Bakhmut, and Solodar, and Melitipol before it, is that you never saw them coming if you solely relied our lying media, which simply repeats Kiev's propaganda, and if you listen to media outlets that include Russian sources, you are far less often surprised by what happens. It's been obvious that Avdeyevka was about to fall for many many weeks, and that it was expected to fall sometime in March. Nobody expected the complete collapse of Ukrainian defenses, and the rout that just happened, though. Although I am sure that your news source assured you that there was an orderly retreat as Ukrainian commanders cooly assessed the situation, when really it was more like the road to Basra, because they held on in a hopeless cause far too long. Kiev had been using Avdeyevka to shell civilians in Donetsk City for almost a decade though, so bringing an end to that is a good thing, I guess.

But I am sure all of this death makes you happy, Howard, because it would be cruel to expect Ukrainians to live in a country organized along the lines of Canada, where some of their citizens could manage their affairs in their own language, and to be non-aligned, which was on offer in the peace deal that the US killed that Ukraine and Russia agreed to almost two years and hundreds of thousands of dead and maimed ago.

The US, since the fall of the USSR, has had a policy of endless war. 9-11 ramped it up another notch, but it was already happening. It is not treasonous to think that a geo-strategy that is based on a logic that the wars can never end until the US has complete world domination, is doomed to failure, and that we should find some other way, like getting along with our rivals.

tim in vermont said...

Talks are ongoing with Ukraine about what is needed to end the war, confirms Norway's Foreign Minister.

"- I don't think Ukraine will lose. But not losing is not the same as full victory,"

Well, Howard, I have to admit that this headline did cheer me up a little bit. You may not know this, since you only read Western media, but Avdeyevka was the last major city fortified by NATO since the Maidan coup that remained, and that if Ukraine does not sue for peace soon, Odessa will come up on the list of target cities, and what remains of Ukraine will be limited to the traditional territory of the Ukrainian nation, which has always been landlocked, since Russia will not want to live with constant attacks on its fleet from the bitter clingers.

My dad fought in WWII, and he told me that the generals wanted to join with the nazis, once Hitler was gone, and attack the USSR. He was right. During the war my dad was on Field Marshal Montgomery's personal transportation staff, and was in close contact with him most days for a couple of years, we have an autographed picture of him and my dad, but he may have inferred his point of view from other sources. Anyway, he would not have been shocked to learn that we are using "not sees" to fight a war with Russia.

Russian shill 'tim in vermont' demonstrates his shillery (rhymes with Hillary) by calling Avdiivka 'Avdeyevka'. The town is not only in Ukraine, it was 5/8 Ukrainian at the last census and only 1/3 Russian. Calling it by a Russian name is therefore something only a Putinite troll would do. It was not a Russian town in any way that counts to a decent person, any more than it became a German town when Hitler's troops passed through.

Saying there was a "complete collapse of Ukrainian defenses" and a "rout" and that it looked like "the road to Basra", is again demonstrably false Russian propaganda: bluntly, a lie. There was in fact "an orderly retreat as Ukrainian commanders cool[l]y assessed the situation". How do I know this? Because the Russians are showing off the six prisoners they captured, who are seen (a) with their hands tied and (b) dead of gunshot wounds. In other words, they only captured six, and murdered them after they had surrendered and were safely restrained. Yet another in the long list of Russian war crimes in Ukraine. And an army of 15,000 that loses 6 men while retreating has obviously not been "routed".

Those who follow Russian channels have noted that (a) the victorious Russians were stopped cold by unexpectedly heavy fire in the next town a mile or so west of Avdiivka, and (b) some Russian channels are grousing about the enormous losses they took in capturing the town, openly saying it was not worth the cost just to straighten out the front lines a bit (see here for instance). They admit to 16,000 - more than Russia lost in Afghanistan in ten years - and 300 armored vehicles. Those who have been counting up the losses say that actual losses were at least twice that, probably three times. Note: there are websites that catalogue every single vehicle lost on both sides, with exact location and date and pictures. With satellite photos it's easier than ever to judge who is winning and who is losing. Someone else calculated that the Russians lost one soldier killed for every square meter of Avdiivka captured. It was a lot more like The Somme than the road to Basra.

Those who follow Ukrainian Twitter know that they only retreated because a severe shortage of artillery and anti-aircraft ammunition made it impossible to stay. Once again, Biden and Jake Sullivan and a lot of Congressmen in both parties seem to be doing their best to prevent Ukrainian victory. They're still likely to be disappointed.

I am normally not keen about posting long-ish videos, and about having a mini-run of Tucker Carlson interviews, but one he had last week was very important yet it seems oddly not much noticed by the commentariat despite getting nearly 30 million views on Twitter.

Tucker spoke to former State Department officer Mike Benz,1 who is arguably the top US expert on the workings of the censorship state to go public about the scope and workings of the censorship regime. He also helpfully describes the trajectory that led the US blob to go from seeing the Internet as its friend, particularly for helping facilitate regime changes, to its enemy by allowing non-mainstream views like support of Brexit to drive events. He also describes some major initiatives, like trying to thwart criticism of mail-in ballots.

Benz’s overview very much dovetails with the work of Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger. Wherever you reside on the political spectrum, this Tucker interview is worth a drive-time listen with a cup of coffee (because yes, Ann, it's coming to blogger): https://rumble.com/v4dtxtu-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-governments-mass-censorship-campaign.html
