"There is an obvious case to be made against Trump being seen as a 2023 winner. On Jan. 1, he faced no criminal charges."

"Now he stands indicted in four cases on 91 charges. His attempts so far to evade a moment of truth — asserting his immunity, seeking to run out the clock and riling up his base with verbal attacks on prosecutors and judges — are far from guaranteed to succeed. Meanwhile, Trump is ratcheting up his incendiary rhetoric, lambasting opponents as 'vermin,' threatening to use the justice system to go after political foes and accusing unauthorized immigrants of 'poisoning the blood of our country.' But Trump emerges as a winner from the year simply because he is in a far stronger position at its close than he was at the start."

Writes Niall Stanage, in "The political winners and losers of 2023" (The Hill).
Back then, he seemed vulnerable even within the GOP after several of his key endorsees in the 2022 midterms were defeated. The DeSantis threat loomed large. But the Trump Teflon proved more resilient than his detractors expected. On Dec. 30, Trump was more than 50 points ahead of DeSantis in the national polling average.... [G]iven Biden’s low approval ratings, it would be reckless to bet against Trump taking back the White House.

As for the other "winners" — there are only Mike Johnson and Nikki Haley. Though there is a "mixed" category, Biden is relegated to "loser" — "If a Biden-Trump general election were held today, Biden would almost certainly be defeated...."

It hasn't worked for the Democrats to demonize Trump. Biden must try to win on his own merit, not Trump's lack of merit.

It seems like Biden's only merit is his unTrumpNess. I don't know if that's enough. Trump need only mention (1) Afghanistan and the resultant plight of women (2) Gaza and (3) Ukraine spending. I question if Trump has the self-control to stay on message.
And there's the possibility of using the economy as well.

Never fear. There are enough mouth breathers, bothy real and imagined, who are going to vote for Biden. After all. There are 23 million public sector workers in America. They are going to vote for Biden.
All our progressive citizens have done in their whole, "Get Trump!" fiasco is to show the rest of us what petty, small minded, anti-democratic people they really are. Just look at the contributions of our nearly intelligent, fecal brained, one snarky comment, usual suspects.

"Trump teflon"? If Democrats had restrained themselves and not brought any charges that wouldn't have been brought against a Democrat, Trump would have wilted, a has-been, a John the Baptist who was a little too weird, a little too disorganized, a little too ineffective. Instead, he's the favorite to get inaugurated next January. You bleeping bleeping self-satisfied, self-absorbed bubble dwellers.

I’m not sure that has ever worked for Joe.

If it did he would have been President long ago.

Biden's merits will come in the form of fawning and coordinated talking points and press releases... from the NBC-CIA Putin-would-be-proud press.

Biden's own merit? What a strange thing to say since Biden has never done anything meritorious for this country. Never.

OTH, if you mean how Biden has rewarded himself by exploiting for personal enrichment, now ya talkin'.

Let’s not forget the reason Joe was nominated in 2016 was because he was a white man, and the Dems feared people wouldn’t vote for a woman or POC in the middle of the Covid crisis.

His Presidency is largely based on his gender and skin tone.

Yes, they're starting to roll out the infernal media turdery. Last time, Joe's 'own merit' consisted of hiding in the basement, being supported by extremely careful camera coverage and short, tight scripts when he made appearances, because 'COVID', and of course the secret Plan B during the vote-counting process. Saying 'Joe's own merit' is like saying Neil Armstrong walked on the moon solely on his 'own merit'.

I'm almost over voting - and Trump. Both sides are led by friends of Zionism and that's a new line for me. I can't vote for Trump, until he says something definitive about Gaza, and - if he says the wrong thing - I'm done with him. If we're Nazis, now, I'm done with America, too.

The fact, they kept that "land without a people" lie going this long, is both embarrassing and damning.

threatening to use the justice system to go after political foes

We are always told Trump is threatening to do this despite the long history of Democrats doing this not just to Trump but other Republicans. Living in Texas, I can point out the prosecutions of Rick Perry, Tom Delay, and most recently Ken Paxton. That’s before we even discuss the heavy handed prosecutions related to January 6th as compared to the financial and political support given to 2020 rioters across the country by Democrat leaders. The article is just another one to stir up the progressive left into believing it is “the right” that is a threat to democracy.

Of course, the juxtaposition that Althouse highlights in the post title is glaring enough. How is it obvious that Trump is a winner if he started the year without charges and now is facing multiple charges in various jurisdiction? Trump certainly isn’t the winner for dragging out the charges when you consider it took three years since his presidency to bring them. That Biden is a loser has almost nothing to do with Trump, as most voters point to Biden’s poor decisions that led to horrendous actions, such as the costly withdrawal from Afghanistan or the growth of illegal immigration. After all, it is actually Biden’s DOJ that is actually going after Joe Biden’s foes while bending over to protect Hunter Biden despite clear evidence of crimes committed by him.

You don't get it professor and neither do the Democrats. Trump is running on Trump's lack of merit. His primary campaign spokespeople are all employed by the DNC.

She did make a lot of bank from a handful of donors despite having less than 1% chance of winning anything. True, the last half of my response demonstrates she was a never a winner, but this is the author of the op-Ed’s skewed logic, not reality. Niall’s a winner simply for getting someone to publish his nonsense. Heck of a gig if you can get it.

Bob McDonnell and Ted Stevens. In Stevens' case they literally hid exculpatory evidence. In both cases the prosecutions worked to hand a Senate seat to the Dems.

Have you ever listened to Neil Strange on the "The Stand" with Dunphy? He's a complete DNC hack. He spent all 4 years of the Trump presidency forecasting that Trump was finished due to "Russiagate" or the Ist Impeachment or the 2nd Impeachment. Or was a Nazi.

If you could boil down all the Liberal/left Inside-the-beltway convential wisdom and distill it, you get Strange. I honestly think he just sits in his office all day reading the NYT's and listening to NPR.

But that's what the Irish want, Leftwing propaganda about how great Biden and the Democrats are and how evil the Republicans are.

BTW, the current DNC/MSM propaganda line is a clever one, given how stupid the Republicans are. Biden and Democrats are trying to destroy the opposition through lawfare and bogus charges. But they don't defend their outrageous, bannana Republic behavior. Instead they attack the victim, Trump, for having the gall to run for POTUS with all these "Criminal" charges against him. And look how it works! You got DeSantis and Haley talking about "we need to move on from all this drama">

Democrats assume that Republican voters are as simple minded as Democrat voters.
The Russian collusion lie was built on the belief that if Trump voters found out Russians supported Trump, all those cold warriors would turn against him. Now Howard and friends think they can whisper in our ears that the DNC supports Trump and again Trump voters will drop their support for Trump. BTW is this the same DNC that’s behind all the lawfare against Trump?

I'm predicted a Trump victory Eva. You are projecting your own personal feelings and insecurities. My point is the Democrats keep feeding Trump oxygen by the endless persecuting and catastrophizing. Everyone knows that Trump' core base of support comes from weak obese overcompensating males and post menopausal housebound cat ladies are turned on by false bravado of the narcissistic bad boy stereotype.

The Democrats are just pumping Trump up with steroids, making him even more attractive to his people.

Per Neil "strange":

1) Biden DOJ using Lawfare against Trump and trying to jail him = Using the Non-partisan DOJ to show no one is above the Law.

2) Trump saying he will retaliate in 2025 = Evidence that Trump hates democracy and is a fascist.

Per "strange" the last we need is a President who will use the DOJ to go after his political opponents - why only dictators do that!

Trump already 'won' in the grand scheme -- he transcended the Earth and entered the realm of legends and Greek gods several years ago. He lives rent free in the heads of millions of people with TDS or general madness, and his ideas transformed the global political debate. Even Biden's mirror-image reactionary policies (e.g., open borders in response to Trump's "build the wall"), confirm Trump's higher status. Trump's main message was that the globalist post-WW2 world order had ended. That's it.

De facto Democratic slogans for 2020 and 2024:

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Pride goes before destruction.
"Let's redo the French Revolution. We miss guillotines."
