Recording mp3s of Fleming's Bond novels off of a YouTube playlist, The Spy Who Loved Me is read by a woman. That isn't going to work. It almost always matters which you are.

Here's a really well-written column by Wisconsin reporter and writer (and Althouse favorite) Bill Leuders:

The Danger of Trump's Bogus "Summary of Election Fraud."

It is a deliciously brutal takedown of all of Trump's big lies rolled up into this one disgraceful "summary." A sample:

When I heard last week that Trump had ushered in the new year by releasing a 32-page report titled “Summary of Election Fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election in the Swing States,” I thought it might be something that I could make fun of. It seemed ripe with comic potential. Here are the report’s opening lines: “It has often been repeated there is ‘no evidence’ of fraud in the 2020 Election. In actuality, there is no evidence Joe Biden won.”

But as I read deeper into the report, I had a different reaction. Far from being a laughing matter, this is perhaps the most diabolical document that I have ever seen. It is breathtaking in its denialism, fervent in its commitment to the Big Lie, and masterfully alchemistic in its attempt to turn accusation into evidence. Trump’s lies about the 2020 election, which he insistently repeats at every opportunity, have never been more compellingly rendered. It’s so slick that you don’t have to be stupid to be taken in, although it helps.

It's a beautiful column.

@rhhardin, IIRC The Spy Who Loved Me was written from the point of view of a woman.

According to Biden, I can buy a nice house at a discount from Black family due to Racism, and turn around and sell it for a nice profit because I’m white.

It has snod on the peaks around the Phoenix area. Very pretty, but I'm not going out to play in it. Still can't fathom how much the poor heat pump has had to work. I don't own enough clothing to go biking in this weather. We are preserving body heat for the next few days.

The 5th Series of FX's "Fargo," another black comedy produced by the Coen Brothers, will end next week but I would guess that MAGAts have not been watching because of the swats at Trump over the first episodes. The stuff really hit the fan in Episode 9.

After the tables turned on Sheriff Tillman, he messages a plea to his patriots: “After they murder me, they’re coming for you next,” which has the ring of Trumpian victimization to it. And they will dutifully follow him off the cliff.

The Trump-era commentary continues through Odin Little, the father of wife Karen Tillman, and a local militia leader who clarified the meaning of the term “witch hunt” for the sheriff: “You know what a ‘witch hunt’ is, right? Not witches hunting men, but men killing women to keep them in line.”

When called, Sheriff Roy's "Patriots" rush out to the Tillman ranch and we watch them set up defenses to fight off the FBI and many Swat Teams, while the infamous background music, "Y.M.C.A.," sung by the Village People is played, just as it is at all Trump rallies.

Back in Minnesota, heroine Dot's mother-in-law Lorraine goes nuclear when she learns that Danish, her lawyer, went missing from the Tillman Ranch. She orders her new head of security, Indira, to call in a favor from none other than President Donald Trump, whom she calls "the orange idiot."

“What’s the point of a billionaire if I can’t have somebody killed?” Lorraine laments.

The administration of Mayor Adams initiated the transfer of close to 2,000 migrants on Tuesday from their current shelter at Floyd Bennett Field to James Madison High School in Midwood, Southern Brooklyn, in response to predictions of severe weather.

This move resulted in many migrants waiting in the rain for school buses for transportation.

According to Mayor Adams, these migrants will be housed at the high school. Consequently, students of James Madison High School are now scheduled to have their classes online.

“Reporters caught on hot mic appearing to joke about an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The reporters were gathering to get a shot of Trump as he was set to appear at the federal courthouse for his criminal immunity appeal.

Reporter 1: "You know what the worst part is? Even if he has his window open and he’s hanging out of it he will be on the other side of the street."

Reporter 2: "If he’s driving, we’ve got a good shot."

Reporter 1: "Yeah, if he’s driving with the front window open?"

Reporter 2: "Yeah, or if it’s a convertible?"

Reporter 1: "Yeah. I wasn’t thinking about that."

Reporter 2: "Yeah. Like if he just pulls up..."

Reporter 1: "Like JFK?"

Reporter 1: "Maybe someone, just like they told JFK. You know what you should do? You should take a convertible! It’s so nice out!"”

The Spy Who Loved Me is a bodice ripper and Fleming’s most popular novel of among women and maybe least popular among men. He disowned it due to fan backlash and in the movie rights he said that they could use the title only, not the plot. Maybe writing for women was too easy.

The Spy Who Loved Me is the ninth novel and tenth book in Ian Fleming's James Bond series, first published by Jonathan Cape on 16 April 1962. It is the shortest and most sexually explicit of Fleming's novels, as well as a clear departure from previous Bond novels in that the story is told in the first person by a young Canadian woman, Viv Michel. Bond himself does not appear until two-thirds of the way through the book

Boeing sold the division that makes fuselages (Wichita, KS) to Spirit Aerospace about 20 years ago. Fuselages are kind of an important component of airplanes, but to Boeing management, it made far more financial sense to sell off that division, than retain it and retain control of the manufacturing process.

Now, whistle blowers are alleging that Spirit is falsifying production and quality records. Just little things, like part certifications, tool calibration and quality control records. Tool calibration for tightening bolts to required torque values so fuselage plugs don't blow out at altitude isn't important to the corporate drones. What's important is DIE values and the lowest production costs possible.

When Boeing bought McDonald Douglas in the 1990s, Phil Cond[u]it gave the St. Louis executives a sweetheart deal. These St. Louis executives ended up running the company and the spinoff of the Wichita KS commercial division was a direct result. We Classical Boeing employees often said that McD bought Boeing with Boeing's money.

I'm replacing our heat-pump water heater because the compressor or the circuit card that controls the compressor is malfunctioning. The WH is only a 1-1/2 years old. I had to go Ferguson's in Bellevue to buy a new W/H which will be delivered tomorrow. The plumber will come out next Wednesday to swap out the W/H. I have to return the malfunctioning W/H to Ferguson's to get credit for it. It'll fit into the back of my RAV4, so I don't have to pay for a pickup by Ferguson's.

I wish I'd opted for a propane W/H instead of this heat-pump W/H. The more complex a product, the bigger the chance of failure.

Old and slow said...

Even propane and natural gas water heaters have become much more complicated and prone to failure these days. Once you start using computerized electronic controls, there is so much more that can go wrong. It used to be that gas water heaters really only failed when the tank corroded through. Otherwise, the worst that could happen was a failed thermocouple. Now the "safety" features are what kill them. I just spent many thousands of dollars on new commercial gas water heaters, and I KNOW they won't last nearly as long as the units they are replacing did.
