What a fuckup Ukraine has turned out to be. If only somebody could have seen it coming! Who would have thought that the Russians would fight so hard over keeping NATO out of land a couple of hundred miles from Moscow! Really? Why doesn't Putin trust us? NATO is a "peaceful" alliance, what we did in Syria, Libya, Yugoslavia, Iraq.. well those were just one-off aberrations! NATO is all about peace. Remember when Khadaffy got anally raped with an AK-47, thanks to us! But he was a terrible person! Not like Putin, no, nobody thinks that Putin is a terrible person! He's just paranoid!
Remember when we put nuclear missiles in Turkey, and then Russia responded by putting missiles in Cuba? Then we promised Russia that we would remove the missiles from Turkey if they took theirs out of Cuba, and a grand bargain, and quite an obvious grand bargain was struck. Then as soon as the threat of Cuban missiles was over, the US simply went back on its word, and we put the nuclear missiles right back in Turkey? Why doesn't Russia trust us?
In some ways, I'm finding XTwitter to be a lot like what The Drudge Report used to be, though I can't take any post at face value without some kind of verification.
Tim in VT: Putin pulls the trigger on wars against the Ukraine. Two wars were started by the Russians in the past decade. Putin does what he does because he can but certainly not because Ukraine borders Mother Russia.
The war resulted in Finland entering NATO adding 1271 miles of common border and Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Poland already had touching borders.
As for removing old-fashioned Jupiter Rockets from Turkey, we then substituted some nuclear subs in the Mediterranian equipped with missles armed with atomic tips. The Russin deal didn't cover subs - just Jupiters. As for the Cuban Missle Crisis, I had just went on active duty with Travel Orders to an AFB in Florida but the orders were canceled.
A tip for those of you on a laptop with Windows 11. If you use the Edge browser, their imbedded AI called Copilot is now the GPT 4 Turbo version, which is the most advanced and up to date large language model publicly available, and it's free (as opposed to using Open AI's commercial version). Totally amazing. I use it as my personal consultant on any subject. It's like being wired into the totality of human knowledge.
Ruy Teixeira's Liberal Patriot SubStack posted an excellent guest analysis of how our two parties find themselves in flux. The work is much broader than the title suggests. The nut 'graph (to me)
With respect to values, knowledge professionals skew culturally and symbolically “left” but favor free markets. As statistician Andrew Gelman showed, elites in the Republican Party tend to be significantly more liberal culturally and symbolically than the rest of the GOP yet more dogmatic about free markets. Meanwhile, Democratic-aligned elites tend to be significantly more “left” on cultural and symbolic issues than most Democrats but tend to be much warmer on markets. The primary difference between Democratic and Republican elites seems to lie in how they rank free markets relative to cultural liberalism: those who prioritize the former have tended to align with the Republicans, while those who prioritize the latter have consistently aligned with the Democrats. To the extent that highly-educated people support left-aligned economic policies, they tend to prioritize redistribution in the form of taxes and transfers whereas most other voters prefer predistribution—higher pay, better benefits, and more robust job protections so less needs to be reallocated in the first place (typically at the expense of some market freedom).
While there is the usual "Orange Man Bad/Crazy Republicans" throat-clearing, it is minimal.
The piece generally the supports the conclusions that many commenters here have drawn. The GOPe is becoming more and more out of step with actual GOP voters, and it's going to get worse as culturally conservative and economically liberal (vis free markets) non-white working class voters are driven out of the Democrat Party.

It appears from the News barrages that many younger people accepted the narrative of Israeli as oppressor against Palestinian Arabs as oppressed. This narrative is based on the events of the last 75 years (since creation of the state of Israel in 1948) and completely ignores any previous history of Jewish and Arab peoples.
If we expand this myopic outlook by 2000 years going back to Roman invasion of Judea, we’ll find that Jewish people were the oppressed ones everywhere in the world while Muslim Arabs were dominant in all the lands of Islam since 6th century.
Jews suffered horribly in the Christian world. There was a promise of better life for Jewish people in Europe with advance of Enlightenment but that was followed by Holocaust and industrial scale slaughter of millions of them.
Life was relatively better for Jews in Moslem world, but they certainly were oppressed there as well.
Emerging from the Holocaust catastrophe after WW2, Jewish people were desperately looking to establish a sanctuary state for themselves. There was absolutely no place for them in Europe, but it was just possible to create a state in their ancient homeland in old Canaan. To achieve that they had to fight the resistance of native Arab people that lived on that land since ancient times. Arabs felt in no way responsible for what happened to Jews in the Christian world and they had no desire to become subjects of Jewish state. The ensuing fighting was absolutely nasty and Jews committed acts of atrocities of their own. About a million of Arabs were expelled from their old homes and lived as refugees ever since.
These actions of Israel are not defensible, but I think they are understandable in the whole historical prospective. Ironically they are entirely understandable according to the basic principles of “liberation theology” so often used to justify the Palestinian resistance to Israeli rule.
"To the extent that highly-educated people support left-aligned economic policies, they tend to prioritize redistribution in the form of taxes and transfers whereas most other voters prefer predistribution—higher pay, better benefits, and more robust job protections so less needs to be reallocated in the first place"
Leftists prefer the former because they believe that Smart People can run society by flipping switches (read: manipulating the general population) to get everything running smoothly (read: the way they think it should be run). And they believe they are the Smart People. Those on the right are more inclined to let individuals make their own choices rather than depend on Smart People to know things they cannot possibly know.
"Ironically they are entirely understandable according to the basic principles of “liberation theology” so often used to justify the Palestinian resistance to Israeli rule."
How many Holocaust movies had we seen, before Oct 7, for anybody to say we don't appreciate the historical moment of Israel's birth? Yurp still doesn't explain how it became Palestine's problem - to the point of branding them animals to kill.
On July 22, 1946, Jewish extremists blew up a wing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, killing 90 people.
The problems of Palestine continue and the recent bombing of the King David Hotel resulted in 65 deaths, 58 missing and 50 others injured. The hotel housed the British Army headquarters and the Palestine Government Offices.
"Well, since you claim to understand the plight on both sides, any ideas how to resolve this conflict?"
Telling the truth is always a good starting point for easing tensions. All this killing is just trying to cover up the evidence that this is an old white colonial project gone wrong, that never should've been imposed on the Palestinians, because American and European antisemitism was NOT their doing or their problem. Once that fact is acknowledged, the road to peace comes into view.
The fact so many Zionists are so willing to kill, NOT to do that, shows the extent of their cynicism, deceit and malevolence.
