"Rumblings in town had suggested that Gal Gadot, the Israel-born star of Wonder Woman who served in the IDF years ago, was behind the event...."

"The proceedings — ahead of which attendees were required to sign an NDA promising not to record or recirculate the sensitive footage — kicked off with remarks from Rabbi Marvin Hier, the outgoing head of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Museum of Tolerance. After noting that it was the eve of the anniversary of Kristallnacht, Hier said that experts have estimated there should be 200 million Jews in the world today but 'there are only 14 million because we are the leftovers of pogroms,' like the one of Oct. 7. He labeled Hamas terrorists 'the Nazis of the 21st century.'... As was forewarned, the footage was gruesome.... For some, it was all too much — a number of attendees could be heard weeping, and some left the theater mid-film, unable to watch anymore. For others, it was not enough... several attendees marched out of the theater and shouted that viewers should not have been spared any of the atrocities that were committed...."

And, of course, I never thought we'd see another terrorist attack on Israel along the lines of the Holocaust.

We are in a bad, bad place as a country. This is a result of the Dems and their wide-open immigration and DEI.

I've written here before: Tribalism didn't work in Rwanda or the former Yugoslavia and it won't work here as long as the Dems are married to identity politics.

Good first step, Hollywood.

Now, American media should stop white-washing the horror of all forms of Islamic terrorism, which is what Hamas is just a small part of. Announce a time when the truth of Oct. 7 will appear on screen, raw and uncensored, so that parents of young kids can make sure they don't see this sort of nightmare material, but then show it all.

The college-educated dunces who chant "from the river to the sea" need to see the bloody fact of what they're advocating for, and the rest of us need to be reminded of the horrible ideology that lies at the heart of all this. Islam is not solely, or perhaps even mostly, a religion, peaceful or otherwise; it's a racist, violent and supremacist ideology that seeks conquest of the world. We can't resist it if we won't face its reality.

I doubt Gal Gadot coordinated this, simply because there are plenty in Hollywood with equal or greater motivation and capability to make this happen, such as Steven Spielberg to name just one. If she did set this up, and for any other, good for them. I am one that doesn’t feel compelled to see the details. Both sides have acknowledged the level of brutality visited on civilians on Oct. 7th. Anybody trying to claim it didn’t happen now is an idiotic partisan or absurd believer that such could never happen. It happened. Of that I’m sure. The only value, to me, is somehow divining from watching the raw footage what is appropriate retaliation, and I’m not interested in answering that question. I’m good with retaliation in general at this particular time. Yesterday’s comments by Hamas only make me more certain of all the above. They admit wanting this and now they got it.

*And btw the influencing will happen even without >50% of legislative power. Way less. Adverse consequences from having Muslims around begin at around 5%.

Check my math, please. From 10 million Jews (round figure) in the world in 1940, to 200 million now is a twenty-fold increase. What population in the world has increased twenty-fold since 1940, or any comparable span of time in modern history?

The pogroms were awful, but the numbers murdered almost seem quaint now, so they can't be a factor.

Instead of wishing there were more Jews, maybe it's better to have fewer Muslims.

If Israel finally lets photos and videos be seen, to counter the claims of people like him, well then they shouldn't do that because it's uncivilized.

"Hamas being the only ones not allowed to wallow in bloodlust and death" must be a typo because all we ever see from Hamas and their supporters is photos of dead and injured children and wailing mothers to score political points. And if they don't have current photos they'll show us ones from years ago or other places or even AI generated, although the last batch I saw had a kid with a hand with six fingers.

I'm sure that Hamas is delighted to wallow in blood and death. They even had professional photographers embedded with CNN to provide high quality images on 10/7.

Thank you for this blog post and the link to the news article, Professor Althouse. If you had not posted this, I would not have known about the showing of this film, or about the film's content. I am trying to understand everything about what has happened in Israel and Gaza on and since October 11th. Knowledge is power.
It is hard to learn about atrocities without getting overwhelmed and sick. I think we naturally see more details in the news about the suffering of Palestinians and destruction caused by the IDF in Gaza because the events are unfolding more slowly there in Gaza (day by day) than the rapid- fire events that occurred in Israel on October 7th.
I don't want or need to see the film footage described in the linked article because I was a teen in the U.S. during the Vietnam War, and I saw it all on my television evening after evening, and in weekly newsmagazines, and the newspaper. We saw suffering there never to be forgotten.
But I am glad that this film composite of the unforgivable attack in Israel by Hamas on October 7th was made and shown and viewed and reported. And thankful for this blog post noting it. I wanted to understand these things better, and now I do.

If 6 million Jews were killed in ww2 then if a generation is 30 years and each woman has 1.5 kids then a first approximation would be that the 6 million if they had lived 80 years ago would be 6000000 * 1.5^(80/30). Or 24 million more Jews today if there were no holocaust. If you go back to medieval times Jew killing pogroms the number would be very high even if a smaller number were killed. Depending on assumptions you would have to integrate over time for variable murder rates.

The question no one is asking is: Why did Hamas film their atrocities?

Although they were proud of their gruesome cruelty, that is not why they filmed them. The videos were to be used for recruitment. For making the statement to other muslims "We are killing the Jews, and you can too. Join us."

And the human tragedy is that marketing strategy would have worked.

That is why the films must NOT be made publicly available, as so many have demanded. You are projecting your revulsion onto your enemies, and you fail to understand how much muslims love snuff films.

No, they are apparently showing *something* to a select group. Not the rest of us, so we can make up our own minds about what's seen or what happened. This viewing is as valuable to me as those Mexican "aliens" they keep trotting out down south.

Here's a better summery: October 7 changed many conservatives - from people who vocally hated cancel culture to becoming our top enforcers of it - and they don't understand how their new-found hypocrisy looks to normal people. They remind me of black people, cheering Johnnie Cochran's win in the OJ trial, but without any historical foundation of wrongs to explain the new morality at work. When Palestinians show their dead, then it's just blatant politics and nothing to be upset about - no celebrities helping. Unlike this. Just like the phrase "human shields" means Israel's gonna have to go in there and just kill everybody. Of course they will. The Palestinians planned for two years, but Israel HAS to go in there NOW "before they regroup." Not saying that she did produce it, but that she has the experience to have participated in its production.

BTW, the “Wave” portion of the name is the English translation of her Hebrew name. Her father was 6th generation Sabra (Israeli born), and her mother from a Holocaust survivor family. The city that she was born in, was founded in 1878 on land purchased from two Christians, and approved by the Ottoman ruler, since it was such poor farm land. That changed, after they drained the swampland. Despite that history, it has repeatedly been attacked by Palestinian terrorists over the years, trying to “reclaim” territory that they never owned.

Josephbleau said...

Now all the West Point think tank profs that predicted that Hamas would bury the IDF in months of deadly urban warfare have realized that Hamas is actually pretty incompetent and are surprised at how much territory Israel has covered with low casualties in a few weeks. This reminds me when all the cool Hollywood actor studs went to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and were sure that the Battle Hardened Republican Guard was so awesome that they would kick the ass of the US Marines. These types of armies only can win against other home grown armies, Syria can beat ISIS, but not Turkey, etc.

The news blindly believes the 10,000 with 40% of them children Palestinian deaths but based on the hospital rocket deal, why should anyone believe them, inflating death is in self interest for Hamas. The reason the Jews are persecuted is that they are too resourceful. They work hard and prosper, leading to jealousy. Whether it’s the banking system of Germany, a village in Russia, Retail Sales in New York City, or a desert in the Middle East, they adapt and make it a better place. Like the Koreans in LA they make people hate them by rocking the boat and getting ahead. The answer is to imitate them by making hard work, family, and moral behavior an element of your culture. But that statement is not what anyone is willing to hear.

Crack, how do "normal" people respond to a terrorist attack on an unsuspecting civilian population? I would say many respond with outrage, and minimal tolerance for equivocation. Personally, I see your line of thinking as revisiting the arguments of the defense at the Nuremberg trials, namely that something like the Dresden bombing was the moral equivalent of the death camps. No one was in the mood for that shit in 1946, but the moral clarity of that time has dimmed. As for me, I am more street in these situations. Don't start none, won't be none. Or FAFO. It's FO time for Hamas.

Pogroms were happening 200 years and more before the Nazis, Mike. I allowed for an early start, but even so, the pogroms were not primarily about killing Jews, but terrorizing, raping, and looting them. They were not a Final Solution.

The Jewish populations of central and eastern Europe and the Russian Empire grew roughly at the rate of the surrounding majorities from 1800 or so--if there is evidence that the pogroms had a significant effect on growth (besides encouraging emigration) I haven't seen it.

Moral relativism is never a good look.

Consider any number of Cancel Culture examples — almost universally, they were for saying things that are factually true, or disagreeing with woke shibboleths.

That is leagues away from, say, Rashida Tlaib. Or anyone who celebrates, or advocates, mass terroristic murder in pursuit of Islam's vile goal of eliminating Jews.

Bad choice of words, maybe. Everyone responds to violence differently. Especially if you've experienced it vs. mediated violence. Some people see violence on TV and they get all worked up. People with violent histories might see violence on TV and it's just violence on TV. We don't get worked up. We wait for more information. We don't decide the whole world has to change now. I personally have not joined a single protest. I have not put up a single poster or tore one down. I have not demanded anyone shut up, nor have I tried to promote a speaker from one side over the other. That's how I think an American should respond to an attack on any foreign country. They're our allies, not our friends.

"I would say many respond with outrage, and minimal tolerance for equivocation."

I might act that way for our country, but Israel spies on us like everyone else - and Benjamin Netanyahu brags about manipulating us after he propped-up Hamas financially - so I'd check that level of devotion.

"Personally, I see your line of thinking as revisiting the arguments of the defense at the Nuremberg trials, namely that something like the Dresden bombing was the moral equivalent of the death camps."

No. World War II was very very clear about who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. The bad guys were the Nazis who attacked their neighbors without warning, in the name of living space, and called human beings "animals" and "savages." Today, the Zionists who attacked their neighbors without warning, in the name of living space, and call human beings "animals" and "savages" are being portrayed as the good guys. That - and the fact they're literally slaughtering people who had nothing to do with it by the hundreds as I type this - tends to muddy a clear picture, somewhat.

"No one was in the mood for that shit in 1946, but the moral clarity of that time has dimmed."

That, and the fact the Zionists bombed the King David hotel in 1946, while everyone was pretending to get all morally huffy in Germany. That was an act of terrorism by the Zionists. Where is your outrage? What had anyone done to deserve that? Don't you think bombing a place shows a propensity for violence? Don't you think bombing a place speaks to who threw the first blow? Don't you think bombing a place would be considered the beginning of a conflict? It worked for us with Fort Sumter.

"As for me, I am more street in these situations. Don't start none, won't be none."

Well, then - if what I just showed you about the King David hotel is true - then you should be "down for whatever" when it comes to tripping up Israel.

"Or FAFO. It's FO time for Hamas."

There's that mud being thrown on a clear picture again.

That was 77 years ago.

At the time:

The Jewish political leadership publicly condemned the attack. The Jewish Agency expressed "their feelings of horror at the base and unparalleled act perpetrated today by a gang of criminals".[29] The Jewish National Council denounced the bombing.[12] According to The Jerusalem Post, "although the Hagana had sanctioned the King David bombing, world-wide condemnation caused the organization to distance itself from the attack."[11] David Ben-Gurion deemed the Irgun "the enemy of the Jewish people" after the attack.[30] Hatsofeh, a Jewish newspaper in Palestine, labelled the Irgun perpetrators "fascists".[31]
