"You cannot forget that the same people that attacked Israel are right now pouring at levels that nobody can believe into our beautiful U.S.A. through our totally open border."

Said Donald Trump, quoted in "For Republicans, All Roads Lead to the U.S.-Mexico Border/G.O.P. lawmakers and candidates regularly invoke record-high border crossings to address a range of issues, including crime and jobs" (NYT).

It doesn't appeal to me, this merging of the illegal immigration issue with the Hamas massacre and its aftermath, but perhaps you're enthused about Republicans leveraging their old issue on this new tragedy.

Should Republicans merge the immigration issue with the issue of Israel?

Whether it appeals to you or not does not change the fact that foreign nationals from all kinds of countries with governments unfriendly to the US, or foreign nationals who are on lists the federal government has compiled of people it does not want in the US, are semi-consistently (at least) caught trying to cross the border under this administration. Which begs the question of how many are not being caught.

Before I worry about someone "leveraging" this . . . It seems to me the more urgent question would be: "Is it true?"

If so - and there is some reason to think it is given recent stories on the number of bad actors captured at the border - then surely whether it helps or hurts a group politically is the last thing we should be concerned with.

"It doesn't appeal to me"

A data point the GOP should take into account.

But if in the real world many nefarious actors wish us ill, and we know next to nothing about the mass of invaders, why isn't it simple prudence to link terror and the invasion?

Leland said...

I could have voted "Yes", but I selected "Depends". What Trump was paraphrased as noting wasn't the Israel issue, but the issue of those behind attacking Israel. Trump is right that those behind the attacks are also attempting to smuggle terrorists across our undefended southern border. Here is CBS News both admitting that there is an increase in people entering our country across the border that are also being tracked on a terrorist watch list, while also pretending that being on the watch list doesn't mean Hamas (except that CBS doesn't really know): https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-mexico-border-terrorists/

Should we really be relying on "don't really know"? Regardless of CBS trying to wash away the concern to protect Biden, the fact is the watch list would prevent these people from entering our country through normal immigration means. They wouldn't be allowed to fly into or within the US. But over 160 just walked across the border, because they could. And those are the ones that were caught, because not all of them are caught.

Shouldn't we be concerned with a major spike in this activity in the last two years? Shouldn't we believe the threat coming from Hamas and Iran that there should be worldwide "day of Jihad". After all, they called for a day of protest yesterday, and we had an assault on the US Capitol building and US embassies in the Middle East. Maybe we should take them seriously, because they don't care what our poll results are on whether to merge them or not.

Yes - some are now being shipped out of border state to blue states. (Why not? - Blue states and cities are openly "sanctuary")

It is not accurate to say terrorists are pouring in. We do not know that. We DO know that the possibility of terrorists coming in with the other illegals is more than a possibility - it is a probability. of course they would!

But Trump takes an issue and turns in into his poorly phrased crapola - which is evermore a gift to the left.

I don't read that as a merger of the US border with policy toward Isreal.

It's presenting a yardstick about the potential danger posed by the people being allowed to enter the country unfettered from across the globe.

The only direct link to US-Israeli policy is that group of the people so allowed in can then use terrorist tactics to punish the US for pro-Israel policies, as just one of many other groups being allowed to enter with other hostile loyalties.

Bruce Hayden said...

I think that you are trying to close your eyes about what is going on, on our southern border. Trump has a much better track record about this sort of thing than does, say, your NYT. While plenty of women and children are crossing the border illegally, the bulk appear to be military aged males. Some, maybe much, of that may be men leaving home to search for opportunities abroad. This has traditionally been true for many Hispanics. But what about all the Middle Easterners entering our country illegally? Plus reports of military parts (e.g. mortar parts and AK autosears) being intercepted along that border. Should we be worried?

I understand why many of your regular sources don’t want anyone looking at the connections here - it would further question the FJB Administration’s wide open border policy. Maybe Trump is being played here. Always a possibility. But a lot of people are really worried right now about everything falling apart at the same time, with your Dems seemingly cheering it all on.

When Trump says "the same people", does he mean some of the actual individuals who were in Israel last week are crossing our borders this week?
Or does he mean, there are some dangerous people crossing our border into our country, which they hate, and they have very bad intentions? I interpret his statement as the latter.

The former seems unlikely this soon, but it's almost certain to happen eventually as Hamas perpetrators flee Gaza and Israeli revenge.
The latter is undeniably true. Trump is conflating the issues, but he's not wrong about the danger. Israel let their guard down.

I'm guessing what you object to is Trump seemingly tarring the immigrants crossing the US border with the same brush as the Hamas attackers. Maybe that's rooted in your own bigotry against us Deplorables. Let me speak for my fellow toothless morons. We don't think all the border crossers are Muslim terrorists. There's a straw man running around out here who does, but he never comes to our meetings.

The media is trying to "pre-bunk" this issue for the sake of party politics, but the danger is obvious to any thinking person. The attacks in Israel have put that danger in the spotlight, not the Republicans and not Trump.

Examples include open borders in the U.S., massive Third World immigration into Europe, carbon caps for the U.S. without any expectation of commensurate limits on China or India, and dignifying Palestinian ambitions to take over Israel. It's all based on the stupid notion that the U.S., Europe, and Israel are hogging up the world's wealth and the time has come to share it.

"It doesn't appeal to me, this merging of the illegal immigration issue with the Hamas massacre and its aftermath"

This is actually two sides of the same issue. The problem with illegal immigration isn't just the sheer numbers of illegals just walking across our southern border, it's the fact that none of them are being really vetted. The whole point of having an immigration system is to know exactly who is entering the country, and limiting legal entrance to those foreigners who are likely to contribute to society.

If 4 million illegals from all over the world enter the U.S. in a year, and one in ten thousand of them is a sub-human head chopper then you've essentially allowed four-hundred 9-11 hijackers free reign in this country to plan and commit whatever atrocities their sick, twisted minds can come up with.

If that's not a legitimate issue for voters to think about then what is?

I don't care if it "appeals" to you. Have you ever set aside exculpatory "neutrality" for facts?

Facts are facts, ugly and prickly.

Look up the statistics of country origin and specific cases. It's hardly difficult. At the age of 22, working in the refugee services industry, I quickly realized that the vast majority of refugees, plus legal and illegal immigrants, pouring into this country were the very people exploiting their own countries -- warlords, drugpins, pimps, redundant Brahmin younger siblings -- or due to other criminal conduct, not wanted in their homelands. They're the ones who control both the refugee camps and ca-ching foreign college admissions, in the former take advantage of them, steal the aid money and decide which of their relatives are at the front of the line to get on the plane first to get here and start exploiting our social service net to start transferring their operations here -- on our dime. Or, in the latter, if wealthy and legal, use OPT status to circumvent usual immigration standards and take jobs from Americans because they're wealthy enough (they are) to spend 36 months taking unpaid jobs in tech and medicine and then they get full citizenship and displace the middle-class Americans being squeezed out of professional STEM jobs. You never faced these pressures, trust me. You had tenure by then. Jesus fucking wept, come on. It's not Masterpiece Theater. It's fucking reality.

Maybe if the border states started regularly busing a few thousand migrants directly to Madison you'd become more enthused, much like Eric Adams and Kathy Hochul have as regards NYC. Even if there are no potential terrorists among the several millions migrants who have already entered the country (a statistical impossibility in itself) no one knows the end effect on the US of this unprecedented, uncontrolled migration of unskilled, young adult single men from the third world. Perhaps we could get the perspective of Sweden, Belgium and France regarding how the uncontrolled Middle Eastern and North African influx of unskilled, young adult single men has worked out for them. This is not just a terrorism issue, it's also an assimilation issue and a gang problem as European countries have found out. Go to Malmo, Charleroi or the suburbs of Paris if you need to experience it for yourself, but leave the rest of us out of that particular experience. That's what Trump was implying, albeit in his normally inelegant way. Long after Gaza has cooled off and got back to whatever passes for normalcy in the Middle East, the US is still going to be dealing with the fallout from our current open borders.

Dilettantes who so casually risk the societies and cultures that were developed by their forebears over a few hundred years deserve the likely end result of this uncontrolled experiment in population exchange; however, they have no right to subject their fellow citizens to such an experiment or to the potential chaos such an exchange brings with it. That is why we have always had controlled immigration rather than facilitating a deluge of people with no history or appreciation of living in a free society. The US cannot continue as a "melting pot" if we add wholesale quantities of ingredients which cannot be quickly "melted," and that's the situation on the Southern border.

"Complete bullshit," says Robert Cook. I'm surprised at his vituperative denial of the Biden administration's CBP and ICE announcements of these people being caught trying to illegally enter the country.

Jamie said...

It irritates me, and more importantly it's destabilizing, that all the enforceable obligation is on one side. I can't think of a way to do it, but meaningful cultural assimilation ought to be a requirement of every immigrant (and illegal immigrants ought to be deported unless they have a legitimate asylum claim, meaning that their lives are in danger in their home country because of who and/or what they are, not just that they're poor).

I don't mean people have to give up their own culture. I do mean that when their cultural practices and beliefs run afoul of US law, US law wins.

Unfortunately, as I said, I don't know how to require this or enforce it. I don't know if legal immigrants are presently required to make any statement to this effect now, unlike newly minted citizens who, at least in theory, do have to swear fealty to the Constitution and the laws of the US.

Terrorists used paragliders to overcome the rather considerable barriers to entry offered by Israel's fortifications at the Gaza/Israel border. Paragliders seem to have worked, much to the delight of the enormous "hate-Jews" element of the political left.

But the sad fact is that all they would need to cross the US border with Mexico, with malice aforethought, is a pair of flip-flops, or at most, boots. They can walk in, sometimes without challenge, and if challenged, worst case is they get deported.

We know that there are plenty of Islamists who hate the US even more than they hate the Israelis, whom they just slaughtered in the most barbaric and disgusting fashion. Israel is the little Satan, to them, and we are the Great Satan. Surely attacking the Great Satan, raping, burning alive, skewering babies, all that must be quite appealing to these crazies.

Is it ridiculous, indeed mockable, to consider (1) that hatred of the US, plus (2) that proven willingness to act with utter barbarity, plus (3) the wide-open state of our border, to warrant a security concern?

I don't think it's ridiculous at all, but apparently others do.

CBS says not to worry because most Muslim terrorists come in from Canada. Thanks Justin!

What I notice is 79% agree with Trump.

As usual, the detractor agree, but want their bad news delivered in a more palatable morsel.

It liking the present you open, but take off points for the bow.

The important thing is, everybody understands exactly what he is saying.

It appeals to me.

In a dangerous world, letting our border go undefended is a really, really stupid policy.

Aside from all of the other plain and obvious reasons why it is just a really stupid policy.

But it's apparently wrong to state the obvious. Because one might be perceived as being insufficiently compassionate or something.

Time to wake up!

Exactly. You should be welcoming these "migrants", say all the sufficiently compassionate progressives. Who are currently attempting to stem the flow of said migrants into their sanctuary cities. Where "Hate Has No Home" and "All Are Welcome", if the window signs are to be believed.

Bunkypotatohead said...

When the next 9/11 occurs a substantial number of US citizens are not going to give a shit. Especially if it occurs in NYC or some other sanctuary city.
And I don't think their precious "migrants" will give one either.

Maybe if Greg Abbott sent a few busloads of recent arrivals to Madison, WI the issue of who is on those buses and why are they here might get your attention.

People cant handle the truth. Its all about the framing. How it looks. Thats what is important. Not the knife slitting your throat and your tongue being pulled through the gaping hole.

Modern day human sacrifice. But the good kind.

Although Rand never wrote or said the exact words attributed to her, their sources probably lie in the passages from her nonfiction writing.

Let's see how this post ages.

The level of "dumb" expressed here is astronomical. The raw fact is that there have been ongoing efforts by all the anti-American players to get their people onto US soil, and this "opening of the borders" was neither accidental or unintentional with regard to letting them in.

Same-same with running down the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. You dumbfucks elected a bought-and-paid-for legit Manchurian Candidate, and have been crowing about what a great president he is since day one. When the final results of what you've done become clear, I really hope you're all among the victims. Because, there will be plenty of those.

Only a fucking idiot could look at this situation and only worry about Donald Trump making a political point. The raw fact is, our security has been compromised and our government turned against us, while you fucking idiots applauded it all.

May you all receive the results personally, and in the worst possible way. I don't know when it's going to start, or how, but something very bad has been enabled by all this crap. Too many pieces like the run-down state of the SPR, the bloated spending leaving us unable to pay our bills, and all the rest of this crap that's been going on are not "coincidental". It won't be "bad luck" when this all eventuates, but y'all will claim it as such.

Just like the warnings you all were given about how the Clinton administration was destroying the counter-terrorism programs, the payoff will come. We sat there and watched all the prep work being done under Clinton, and it came through with flying colors on 9/11.

I honestly just don't care, any more. I've played Cassandra and gotten her reward too many damn times, and I really long for the clownshow to be over with, and for all you half-wits who applauded this crap to pay the price.

Which you will.

It doesn't appeal to me, this merging of the illegal immigration issue with the Hamas massacre and its aftermath

@Althouse, would it appeal more if terrorists picked Madison as a nice, soft target for rape and murder?

I'm assuming that nobody in pretty little college towns spent yesterday sweeping up broken Jalisco bottles and Taki chip bags that had been pelted at their now tilting-again mailbox and littered their road entrance, again, with broken glass, for no reason, again,, then had to deal with illegals with guns sneaking into the back woods to shoot deer illegally and with no license, as said home owning taxpayers tried to exercise their dogs on their own damn land -- beloved dogs who could easily have been shot.

Again.

I'm guessing people living in cunning little leftist college towns have never done a deep dive into their former employer's surplus cash made off foreign students from despotic families from despotic nations that garner their plush retirement coffers. Wasn't there a quite cutting short story by a famous and otherwise leftist short story writer about this in the 90's? Hint: the co-ed's throat gets slit; the Islamic student makes himself a pot of tea, and all his campus foreign student pals commiserate about the woes of dating mouthy but easy American female bitches. Based on a real story. Hate crime laws didn't apply because it was just killing a woman -- and an American.

I'm guessing nobody living in cute little suburban places where they have the luxury to agonize about bagging leaves understands the carnage perpetrated by the presence of millions of illegals who can't drive and have no insurance, and leave (as it were), for just one example, an 18-year old college girl strapped to a wheelchair for life screaming obscenities while trying to masturbate incessantly because some work van filled with illegals ploughed into her car, grated her frontal lobe like parmesan, and then melted from the scene -- the police left with no leads, and the family impoverished and of course utterly destroyed by the consequences?

Maybe people with foreign-mobbed-up pensions can afford the astronomical uninsured motorist insurance rates that result from endless incidents like this, but others can't.

I hate the phrase "critical thinking," but it's a fer piece better than the phrase "playing online flaneur with the destruction of other people's lives from an abstract and intellectually incurious distance."

Again somebody making an assertion of fact without support.
The people who go into the desert to clean up, mostly volunteers, have found Korans. Islamic newspapers and books written in arabic. We know that people from the middle east have entered our country illegally. The question is; What is their intent?

It's Trump's obligation to defend and verify his claim that he purports is "fact." That's how reality works.

No. no. no. YOU asserted that the statement was "bullshit". It isn't up to Trump to defend your words. You defend your words. How do you know that no middle eastern men are crossing our southern boarder? THAT is how realty works.

"NEW: Internal CBP data provided & confirmed by CBP sources reveals thousands of “special interest aliens” from mostly Middle Eastern countries have been apprehended by Border Patrol while crossing into U.S. illegally over last 2 years.
