Gospace said...: There's a book- The Two Parent Privilege - that's apparently controversial. I haven't read it- but a line from one review has me asking a question- this the line- "The gist of the book is that kids are undeniably better off with two parents for reasons that are financial (two incomes are better than one) and personal (two parents have more time to devote to bringing up children than one)..."

Two incomes? We have 5 successful children, all doing financially better then we were at their ages. On one income. If both parents are working- they do do not have more time to devote to bringing up children then one. They may have more resources- depending on how much they're putting out for childcare.

Living for more then 25 years now in a small town with the largest graduating class from HS being around 100, I've been able to know about all the children who graduated 1st and 2nd in their class. And each of them has come from a two parent family - parents on marriage #1 and only- with mom being a full time housewife and mother. I'm fairly certain if you went into large suburban high schools you'd find pretty much the same thing. Inner city schools are a whole other thing- but for specialty schools like Bronx HS of Science or Brooklyn Tech, where you'd likely see the same thing.

Now I have seen kids from two working parent households where the children were successful and went on to college and are doing as well or better then their parents. They were in the top of their class also, but not at the apex. And the ones at bottom? From single parent female headed households, and those at the very bottom, with siblings from different fathers. Or should I say sperm donors?

But what works and has worked is always controversial. The relationship between stable two parent families consisting of one man and one woman and children's success has been known for centuries in the Western world. Two parent families consisting of two same sex parents? Well, lack of success for the children brought up that way was predicted- and if you look honestly at the the so far few children who've grown up in such families- there's a crapload of problems. Possibly worse outcomes then middle to upper class single mother households with one or two children from the same father.

Phonics? Controversial. But it works if you want readers

Times table memorization? Controversial. But it works if you want people to understand numbers.

Seems to me that in any field except athletics, what works is rejected by the elite. In athletics if something new doesn't work, it is very soon rejected. If it does work- it rapidly is adopted by all. I have to wonder why that philosophy isn't adopted in all other endeavors.; 9/28/23, 11:27 PM

"PHOENIX (AP) — Entrances to national parks will be blocked and thousands of park rangers will be furloughed if Congress doesn’t reach a budget agreement this weekend, the Department of Interior said Friday.

The stance is a reversal from five years ago when the Trump administration kept some iconic parks open in a move that has been lambasted as illegal by the Government Accountability Office, the congressional watchdog.

This time around, the majority of more than 420 national park units will be off-limits to the public, Interior officials said. The governors of Arizona and Utah vowed to keep some of the most iconic parks open with state funding, including Grand Canyon and Zion.

Whether tourists can access other national parks will depend on size, location and other factors. Generally, if a site is closed or locked during non-business hours it will remain that way, Interior officials said. Places like the National Mall will stay open, but there are no guarantees that restrooms or trash will be maintained."

"First son Hunter Biden received two wire transfers from Chinese nationals worth a total of $260,000 months after dad Joe began his 2020 presidential campaign — and with the elder Biden’s Delaware home listed as the beneficiary address, a key House Republican said Tuesday.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) revealed financial records that his panel subpoenaed turned up the transfers in July and August 2019.

“Bank records don’t lie but President Joe Biden does. In 2020, Joe Biden told Americans that his family never received money from China,” Comer said in a statement.

“We’ve already proved that to be a lie earlier this year, and now we know that two wires originating from Beijing listed Joe Biden’s Wilmington home as the beneficiary address when he was running for president.”

Hunter Biden is known to have spent time living in father Joe’s Wilmington home following his 2017 divorce from wife Kathleen Buhle, even falsely claiming he owned the property on a July 2018 background check form as part of a rental application.

Hunter also listed his dad’s house as the billing address for his personal credit card and Apple account in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

However, both the first son’s memoir and proposed guilty plea agreement placed him in California with his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, in the summer of 2019.

The two payments revealed Tuesday are linked to BHR Partners, a venture between Hunter Biden’s Rosemont Seneca and Bohai Capital, a Chinese investment firm.

The first payment of $10,000 came from a person identified as Ms. Wang Xin on July 26, 2019. The second took place about a week later on Aug. 2, 2019, for $250,000 from Li Xiang Sheng, who goes by Jonathan Li."
