"When you look at what's happening, this is a persecution of a political opponent. This was never supposed to happen in America."

"This is the persecution of the person that's leading by very, very substantial numbers in the Republican primary and leading Biden by a lot. So if you can't beat him, you persecute them or you prosecute him. We can’t let this happen in America."

By the way, he's not leading Biden by a lot. The 2 are approximately tied. But maybe if you look at it state by state and consider the electoral votes, he's got a better shot. When he won in 2016, he lost the popular vote by nearly 3 million.

Suppose the President, rather than asking local prosecutors to investigate his potential rival, phoned another nation's leader and asked that prosecutors and investigators in THAT nation dug into alleged crimes. "Do me a favor..."

Would that be better or worse than the President calling the team into the Oval Office? "I'm giving you an order..."

Why not? What happens if we let it happen? What would America become. What should Americans do to prevent it?

I'm not hearing a lot of leadership from Donald Trump.

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and Paul Revere ... they didn't just issue statements on courthouse steps. They took to arms. They killed people. That's right ... George Washington crossed the Delaware on Christmas Eve and killed people. And as a result, he has the best monument in Washington DC. His face is on Mt. Rushmore.

LEAD, Donald.

Leading requires a call to action. What are we to do?

The Left’s spin is that Trump is running for President in order to stay out of prison. Fucking Dem liars. He announced well before he was indicted.

Factcheck Althouse!

Trump always exaggerates. Always. And Trump was doing worse against Hillary in 2015-2016. And he won. But that's the way the Democrats, GOPe, and MSM operate. Pick away at some minor exaggeration by Trump and ignore his larger point.

Notice the NYT's doesn't give us a "Democrats pounce" slant. Nor do they discuss in detail how norm busting and just plain crazy it is for Biden's DoJ to try to jail a former POTUS and probable opponent.

Nor do they talk about prosectuorial (sic) overreach. Nope, this indictment is treated as something normal and expected. And the only issue to the NYT's is: Did Trump commit the crime and who's winning the "legal horserace". Will Smith get his trial date? Will the judge rule in favor of Trump's lawyers request for this or that?

Nobody is outraged. No civil liberties are at stake. The trust of 70 million Trump voters in the Government isn't at stake. Nope, its perfectly acceptable for the President to use his DoJ to jail an ex-POTUS for speech crimes and contesting an election. Yeah, we do that every day in the good ol USA, donchaknow.

Is this really the takeaway here? If you ask me, using the power of the government to prosecute and attempt to imprison a political rival is the issue, not how accurate his representation of current polling is.

YMMV, I guess.

They keep wanting Donald Trump to go away but they keep building a podium and providing a lectern and microphone instead. I think the Trump haters are political masochists.

Trump gonna beat 571 felony counts, and get elected president for a 3rd time.

What a boss!

Dave Begley, he's been reported saying that since he was impeached. Keep up.

Maybe it's not necessary to ask for favors or give orders.

Donald Trump is a loser.
He failed to beat a doddering old fool who was relegated to his basement for the entire campaign.
He failed to repeal Obamacare.
He failed to make meaningful progress on the wall.
He failed to appoint many administration positions for months and over a year after he took office.
He failed to get rid of Christopher Wray.
He APPOINTED Christopher Wray.
He really could have negotiated the return of the documents which (unfairly) got him indicted. He was too dumb.
He failed to beat a 20 year old sexual assault charge leveled by a weirdo New York socialite.
He failed to back decent candidates for the 2022 election.
He backed the 1 guy in the state of Pennsylvania who could not beat a stroke victim.
He failed to get government spending even remotely under control.
He is a loser. His failures are of the kind that should concern Republicans and conservatives. Until they do, there is no shot that they can beat even slow Joe Biden. Imagine him having to go against anyone sentient and upright!

On the old side he appointed some good judges and his tax plan was less shitty than usual.

If he was any good at ALL he would beaten Biden so far beyond the margin of fraud there would be no issue. But he is a loser and he lost.

Even with every finger on every scale, 100% of the media and institutions against, including vast swathes of the GOP - and Trump is still winning. And the hot take is "he's not winning by much".

Please.

Was it "legal" for our first President, George Washington, to kill British soldiers? Was that legal? Or was it illegal at the time?

What about Thomas Jefferson? Wasn't he a "traitor" to his country when he signed the Declaration of Independence? When Paul Revere rode the countryside announcing "one if by land, two if by sea" wasn't he guilty of a conspiracy to commit murder?

Do you really want to watch your country be torn asunder?

Or will you fight?

They did.

Will you?

Tell me more about this country where they elect their president by popular vote -- it sounds foreign.

I have news for you. We don’t elect our presidents by popular vote and the reason it’s like that is because of the very situation we’re in. California and New York are 60+ Democrat and they have a huge percentage of the voters. The founders wanted to prevent the big urban states from controlling everything. 477 counties won by FJB and 2497 won by Trump.

Trump's first impeachment was about covering up Biden's and the Democrats' money making corruption in Ukraine. Trump threatened Nancy Pelosi's gold-mine of kickbacks, so that could not be tolerated. Biden confessed to the fulfillment of his bribe at the Council of Foreign Relations with his little story of firing the prosecutor. Good value for his and Hunter's combined $10,000,000 bribe.

That's if you can trust the polls. (Shrug.) I'm thinking that they'll change the numbers any way they think will bolster Biden - if they can come up with the appropriate fig leaves for cover.

That he's even leading (I think) means the numbers are so skewed Trumpward that the fig leaf couldn't be stretched to cover it. Otherwise, Biden would be in the lead. After all, he got (snicker) 81 million votes...

Kirk Parker said...

Althouse, please: you should know better that to say "he won the popular vote". There is, in fact, no such thing to be won.

It would be like saying "How could the Chiefs have won the Superbowl? The Eagles gained more yards!"

--- he's not leading Biden by a lot. The 2 are approximately tied.

Are Democrats getting exactly what they want? From PowerLine:

"The chief advantage of running against Trump is that the failures of the Biden administration, which are both legion and catastrophic, will be almost irrelevant, because Biden will not be the Democrats’ nominee. They will run a fresh face, most likely Gavin Newsom but perhaps someone else, against the retread Trump. The election, on that scenario, will be a referendum on Trump, and Trump will not come close. It will be a Democratic sweep, a remarkable achievement following one of the most pitiful administrations in American history.

"That, I think, is the Democrats’ plan. ... [T]hey didn’t take control over virtually every American institution by being stupid. When it comes to politics, they know what they are doing. And what they are doing is trying to make Donald Trump the Republicans’ sacrificial lamb in 2024. That said, I can’t explain why Republicans would want to go along with the Democrats’ plan."
