The Russian lunar lander has "ceased its existence as a result of a collision with the lunar surface."
According to according to Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, quoted in "Russia’s Lunar Lander Crashes Into the Moon/The robotic Luna-25 spacecraft appeared to have 'ceased its existence' after a failed orbital adjustment, the space agency Roscosmos said" (NYT).

Did they steal a copy of the software from NASA’s 1999 Mars Climate Observer, which is believed to have crashed due to part of its software assuming metric units but other parts of the code assuming imperial units?

The crash is just a cover story. Luna 25 has actually defected to Ukraine and is being repurposed as an attack drone
Too bad. Hate to see anyone fail in space, but if anyone has to, I prefer it to be Russia, China or Boeing.

The lander ceased its existence, but a scrapyard of slightly damaged spare lander parts has suddenly appeared near the lunar South Pole. Parts is parts, as the saying goes. Keep it in mind if you ever get stranded like Matt Damon on Mars.
…a collision with the surface… So it remains to be seen if the surface decided to intervene by rising up to meet the Lander, or did the Russian craft fail??? An investigation must be launched to determine how this “collision” occurred!
I assume "ceased its existence" is the usual term of art in Russian, for this kind of event, and that its cromulence has been replaced by an exotic flavor in translation.
Probably some stupid math or data entry error. That's why you shouldn't rush these expensive projects. (And triple check all the software.) Remember when that Mars lander crashed because somebody entered some data as "feet" instead of "meters?"
A Ukrainian I follow on Twitter pointed out something so amazing I had to confirm it on Wikipedia. This was Luna 25, and it failed even to land. IF you're wondering about the previous 24 Lunas, Luna 24 landed on the moon and returned with 6 ounces of soil samples . . . in 1976! Lunas 16 and 20 had already done the same.

And precisely what technology, manufacturing and production strategy and project objectives are being offered up by the non-Spacex space program usual suspects?

Regolith braking is always effective in removing excess velocity, but it tends to be rough on the hardware. Not recommended.

That was Lockheed’s screwup. NASA failed to catch Lockheed mistake. It was a subtle mistake, on the order of 1 part per million, but that was enough.
America, China, Israel, and now Russia have joined the elite class of mission: impossible... aborted.

Meanwhile, the ChiComs are attempting to "create" (wink wink) their "own" "Starship-ski" knockoff.
So again, the US govt "space"/permanent cost over-runs jobs programs were no better than the russkis...they just had more cash to burn and still needed a wildcard to pull their bacon out of the fire.

Oh, come on. It's easier than ever today to Photoshop a lander into some legit photos of the moon surface. You can tell 'cause the lander looks exactly like the lander on display at the National Air and Space Museum in DC.
And they did the same thing but in reverse to edit out images of the secret alien and Nazi moon bases.
If my irritation is showing, its because the US wasted 20 years with the help of members from both parties and our self-styled self-anointed "elites", to sell out US strategic objectives and advantage for graft and political payoffs.
And thats another reason they despise Musk. His vision, drive and practical capabilities in application exposed the entire sordid industry.
The Russkies had better buy some better rockets from SpaceX.

SpaceX is basically a tech company at the forefront of what they do.. They exploded many rockets before they got their reusable ones to work and now they have had more than 110 successful launches. The idea of a reusable rocket wasn't even in NASA's head. They are incredibly innovative and failures are a way for them to learn.
Now regarding this first complete Starship system test, some obvious conclusions:
> It cleared the pad. A major concern was failure at launch that could have severely damaged the launch and retrieval system. That would have been a major and very expensive setback.
> 28 of the 33 engines were still in operation at the end of the boost phase. This very efficient full flow engine design has never been successfully used in a rocket launch (except in earlier SoaceX testing) much less 28 of 33 working correctly. If you watch the launch video you can see anomalous sparks in the exhaust plume. I would guess that was an engine failure. The important point is the redundancy in engines allowed the system to launch and fly, and the instrumentation aboard the rocket will tell SpaceX what they need to fix next.
Bottom line, no one has ever done what we saw when Starship was tested. No one, much less a private company, has put in place the technical skills, production capability and stable funding to rapidly progress through the development steps of anything like the Starship system -- 100 tons to orbit with a completely reusable system with rapid turn around.
Musk and the SpaceX team he has put together are nothing less than historic pioneers. And the naysayers are just going to have to learn to deal with the new realities they are creating.
If only NASA hadn't wasted so much treasure on the space shuttle program and instead explored lobbing stuff into high earth orbit. Like say a permanenet space station as a waypoint and storage for personnel and fuel and supplies for missions to the moon or Mars, say.....
