"The mugshot was completely unnecessary and vindictive, of course."

ADDED: Here's how The New York Times addresses the mugshot: "Trump’s mug shot is released, a first in his four criminal cases this year":
Mr. Trump’s mug shot photo shows a severe expression, contrary to what we have seen from a few other defendants, some of whom have smiled. Mr. Trump, during the photo shoot for his official White House photo shortly before he became president, scowled at the camera and told aides he thought he looked “like Churchill.”

The top-rated comment over there is: "Same look my 3-year old gave me when I said no more cookies." Lots of laughing at Trump, which I find very off-putting. I'm not a Trump supporter, but I think it's terrible that erstwhile liberals are cheering on the criminalization of politics.

So Trump is privileged above all other criminally charged and arrested folks in the state of Georgia? I don't think so.

Trump wanted the mug shot because he wanted to use it to rip off his followers again. Indeed his grifting world goes round and round and you know that it ain't never gonna stop.

Missing yet again in this arrest is support from Trump's immediate family - Melania and Barron, as well as the families of Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric. Trump's sickness gets worse as time passes.

Yes, Bruce. Trump self-listed at 6'3", 215 lbs.

Also listed at 6'3" 215 lbs. (during their active/playing days):
John Elway
Kirk Gibson
Braylon Edwards
Evander Holyfield
CJ Stroud
Bryce Barringer
Max Scherzer

I could go on and on. This was last night's all-American parlor game. Sports fans going through their favorite teams' rosters and looking up all the guys they remember as being around 6'3", 215.

The American nickname "Yankee" followed from British mockery of the country bumpkin colonials dressing up as "Yankee doodle dandies." Those who were mocked grabbed the nickname and it stuck. Trump's supporters are very likely to plaster this mugshot everywhere...posters...billboards...T-shirts...graffiti...for support and in mockery of Uncle Joe Biden (Stalin) and Chairman Mao.

The "Baby Trump" balloon of his presidency was intended to make him look silly, but it was actually a cute balloon if you didn't know the intent and backstory.

As always, I appreciate the sentiment, and as always, it's a little late. Those "liberals" haven't been liberal for a long time, they have been cheering the criminalization of politics for years, and they use their power to solidify their power. And as always, nothing will change as long as the nice women of America stand by and let them. Althouse herself possible excepted, my bet is that their aversion to uncouth Trump and his uncouth base, and their love of abortion on any demand at any time, will keep them in the Dem camp. More Americans want the terribleness.

I think you're being kind about it. They're cheering on Maoism. Which, to me is a not surprising result of years of the Left moving further and further Left. So much so that they've become todays Red Guards, with the national press leading the cheering of The State as it removes it's opposition-both large figures, such as Trump, but also smaller figures who dared to show opposition, such as small political figures in Michigan. The only thing missing is dragging neighbors out of their homes, putting dunce caps on them, and having hundreds scream and ridicule them. I look forward to my fitting.

There's a lot going on right now around this country. Much of it very dangerous. In fact, the most dangerous group in our country today is our own government. And I'm not sure the Left will recover from these last few years, IF power can be taken away from them in the next election. If not, it's been nice, people. See you in the next version.

I can add my son-in-law. He might report as 6’4” and 220 though. His playing weight his senior year in college was 305. With that weight, he was O Line, not Q Back. He worked hard the rest of his senior year to get his weight down, and was in the range of 240 by graduation, and has lost another 20-25 in the decade since then. The difference though is that he maintains it as hard muscle, which is denser than fat. The good news, for my daughter, is that he is the pack mule whenever they hike or camp.

Most guys, really most people it seems, who carry a little extra weight, seem to underreport their weight. I have been reporting as 5’11” and 200 lbs for several decades, even when my weight inched above 210. Now, in my early 70s, it is back down there, and I am working towards 190, maybe even 185. And then I will change it on my DL. On the flip side, my partner tells everyone that she is 130, but shows up at the doctor’s office - and on her DL, as 145.

The next large figure the New Soviet Democraticals need to remove is Elon, in addition to anyone anywhere that would dare to work with a Trump or other outsuder candidate.

Hence the Alice-in-Wonderland DOJ lawsuit against SpaceX for not hiring enough asylum seekers or refugees...even though ITAR rules prohibit the hiring of foreigners in particular space related companies. Of course the ITAR considerations allow the FISA-driven domestic surveillance and 2-hop rule for all communications to come into play...probably already is and the feds just need to backfill to cover for their earlier corrupt surveillance.

The corrupted Feds will use their bastadized FISA spying tactics to nail Elon on some sort of process crime or transgression which would solve 2 major problems for the New Soviet Democraticals and their GOPe lackeys:
- Provide an opening for the left to reassert control over Twitter
- Provide another opportunity for the left/dems/GOPe to slow down SpaceX progress to help their ChiCom paymasters and establishment Space Industrial Complex pals.

I've been fully accepting the conventional wisdom that Trump is the only Republican, possibly the only person on earth, who would lose to Biden despite this administration having been an unmitigated disaster in every possible way.
You know, basically the same conventional wisdom that said that Trump was the ideal opponent for Hilary Clinton, as his presence on the ballot would allow her to run up huge margins of victory and take the House and the Senate.
But I am now starting to think that the news media and the fringe activists of the Democratic party (but I repeat myself)--basically the people who spend their entire lives online--may have outsmarted themselves yet again.
Although I work in academia, I sometimes come into contact with normals, and even here in Massachusetts, I am getting the sense that normals are unhappy with the craziness of trying to put Trump in jail.
I think the obviously bogus "classified documents" thing* had a chance of working, in that it has all the characteristics of a trap set up by alphabet agencies and bureaucrats, and so is surface believable, as such well-crafted lies are. (*"obviously bogus" because EVERY story about classified documents is obviously bogus. It's a game of Calvinball that is intended--and works!--to empower bureaucrats to criminalize any high-level person they want to go after).
But this thing is Georgia not only seems ridiculous on its face: it is making even more people think that the election really was stolen. The rhetoric around the election was already squirrely, but now it really looks like they are trying to hide something.
And so I'm wondering: how many people who actually voted for Trump are going to refuse to vote for him this time? How many people who voted for Biden are going to be able to convince themselves that everything in the country is fine and a doddering dementia patient who can't walk up stairs is the right person to lead it? How many independents who thought they were voting for "normal" by voting for Biden, or who just stayed home because they didn't like Trump or didn't like Republican ideas in general are going to do the classic American thing and vote for the guy whom the System is trying to crush?
I would very much like to live in less "interesting" times.

Ummm...I'm referring in my comment above only to the burning of the Minneapolis Police Station, as referenced by Dave Begley. Be more attentive.

As for other violence that occurred during the protests of 2020--which, yes, were mostly peaceful--it appears there were some out-of-control protestors who committed acts of damage or arson, and I deplore such actions, as they are criminal acts, and also because it undermines or destroys the sincere motives and legitimacy of most of those out there protesting. However, I believe most of the incidents of that form that occurred was the work of police and/or other government agents provocateurs whose goals were to discredit the sincerity and legitimacy of Black Lives Matters protestors and to justify whatever arrests and/or assaults on peaceful protestors the police would presumably enact. As the MC5 sang in their song "back in 1970:

"The way they pull you over is suspicious
For something that just ain't your fault
If you complain they're gonna get vicious
Kick in your teeth and charge you with assault"

This is still a too-common police tactic even in many ordinary arrests, stops, and miscellaneous police/citizen interactions.

The left routinely mangles and confuses the meanings of words. The goal is to make it more difficult for people to communicate. People who are confused by the meaning of words are going to have trouble understanding others or making themselves understood. It's also a way to avoid accountability, when one can simply say "That's not what I meant" in response to a critique.

When you can call the sterilization of children "gender affirming care" with practically no pushback, you can get away with a lot of nasty shit.

I didn't vote for Ronnie Raygun because of his divorce and support for gun control, among other things.
Trump is not, and never has been a conservative in his life, given his support for gun control, Occupied Palestine, and so many other lefty causes. I reluctantly voted for him in 2016, but I voted for Biden in 2020, although I was seriously tempted to vote Constitutionalist.
While it will be up to juries to decide whether Donnie is guilty, I am amazed that he is not behind bars and forbidden to speak, write or communicate with others, given what he is currently credibly accused of. Anyone else would be. I would like to see him indicted for other crimes, and I think the Iranians have a good case for wanting him tried there.

@Althouse, your remarks imply that you regard this as a new phenomenon. As a (retired) Con Law Professor you should be aware of McDonnell b. United States. It was decided 9-0 against the Deep State but it cost popular Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell more than $27 million and a shot at the 2016 Republican nomination. And, I’m sorry, but I don’t recall you shedding a tear when criminalization of politics was used to knock Sarah Palin out of the governorship of Alaska.

In the runup to the 2020 South Carolina primary James (“The Talking Skull”) Carville was open about the need to grasp and hold power. Power to do what? Not to make life better for people who work for a living, that’s for certain.

And I can’t leave without asking, Althouse, whether you were one of those liberals who mouthed slogans like “the end justifies the means” and “by any means necessary.” You don’t like where that leads? Maybe you should have thought about that before.

hpudding said...

Lots of laughing at Trump, which I find very off-putting.

Awww. His delicate feelings really are very important to you, aren’t they?

I'm not a Trump supporter,

Then are you just a dictatorship supporter? You’ve not posted any analysis of the indictments - a luxury even his own lawyers aren’t afforded. They have to address the charges. That’s how rule of law works. It’s not an option for anyone indicted for a crime to just say “I’m too good for this. GIve me the respect that my never-ending narcissism demands.” Or, “I’m a president, isn’t that innocence enough?”

but I think it's terrible that erstwhile liberals are cheering on the criminalization of politics.

What’s worse is the politicization of crime. Many other politicians have been indicted for and convicted of crimes, including a Republican House Speaker - 3rd in line for the succession. This presumption that a president is too good for our laws is absolute BS nonsense. If you want an absolute monarchy in America that ship sailed 235 years ago.

You would have served him more good advising him on how to avoid breaking laws before he decided to break them. But he didn’t want that - having fired AGs until he finally found one that gave him the personal loyalty (not national or constitutional loyalty) he required. And then even that last AG felt he went too far. Trump wanted a Roy Cohn, though. Is that the kind of lawyer you think you could have been for him?

Indicting and prosecuting without fear or favor is the normalization of law, refusing to do so is simply the normalization of crime. Other countries gone through exactly the same milestones - countries much more stable than ours. Honestly this should have been done 50 years ago. Pardoning Nixon only convinced Republicans that criminal immunity for a president should be some kind of norm required for domestic tranquility, and now they’ve taken that to the logical conclusion of threatening violence when a criminal president is prosecuted. They took exactly the wrong lesson from Watergate, as did Trump himself. Nixon at least had the grace to not make a mockery of the accountability expected of him. Trump just turned everything into a fight. But pugnaciousness does not translate into winning, especially if like Trump one lacks all self-control.

Valuable lessons his followers will have to learn sooner or later.

I once got held overnight with some drunken friends a long, long time ago in Lexington, KY and we were all weighed and height taken as part of the process on entry into the jail even though no mugshot was taken.

Bribery, governmental corruption, insider trading, influence peddling, voter fraud, document theft, conspiracy and child abuse.

The reason charges aren’t brought isn’t to “respect” some political arrangement whereby presidents generally are allowed to be criminals. It’s probably because there aren’t any facts supporting such charges strong enough to secure convictions. And because Biden’s attitude (as with any normal president’s attitude) isn’t contemptuous of the law as Trump’s has been.

Case in point - document theft? As with Mike Pence any documents misplaced were returned immediately upon request by the archives agency, whereas Trump kept his for over a year in unsafe locations just so he could keep bragging about keeping them in his possession and showing them off to randos at his country club. If someone returns your property that’s different from someone who taunts you for over a year while holding it in their possession.

It’s like you have to teach basic decency to these Republicans.

As well as how to live in a fact-based world. Trump lost 60 suits he filed in relation to the 2020 election, including some where Giuliani had to admit in court that he had no actual evidence to present and had just made false claims for media consumption in the court of public opinion. His license is suspended and he’s on his way to trial. And Trump won’t reimburse him a dime for any time he’s put in pretending to do his undisciplined client any good. He’ll be thrown under the bus just like all the others.

Normal people learn from dealing with behavior like this. But the right-wing minions are so in need of a lord and deity to swear allegiance to that they just keep worshipping at the altar and kissing the feet of Tyrant Trump.

Losers, every last one of them. As I said if Nixon hadn’t been pardoned maybe they might have been persuaded to pursue a rational politics for all these decades instead of a war on America so disastrous that only a megalomaniac like Trump could convince them of their righteousness.

How fanciful and imaginative.

You know what happens when Republicans hold power? You get worldwide economic depressions as we can see from 1929 and 2008.

In 1929 this led to a rise of fascism in Europe, a world war that killed tens of millions of people, mass genocide and a strengthening of a Soviet empire as the only ally capable of helping to defeat all that.

You’d have to really make up quite a fiction about Australia to somehow compare with any of that.

In 2020 you get a president who was so stupid about planning pandemic responses that he stuck his thumb in his rear end while a million Americans died as he mused in front of the cameras about using disinfectants internally. He also wanted to destroy NATO.

Your politics are a bunch of BS. That’s why the country was founded by enlightened progressives and not a bunch of ostriches conservatively trying to import to America the same failed systems of feudalism, monarchy, theocracy and ethno-nationalism that didn’t work in Europe. Until Buckley, Reagan, Gingrich and Trump convinced people like you to give those things a try over here.

Delay got a campaign photo quality mugshot, outraging his Dem opponents, who wanted something like a chain gang photo. https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna9771955

I note that Tom lost his elected office after that sham of an indictment, way back in 2005. This Democratic Party tactic of smearing an opponent with multiple indictments, knowing that none are likely to stick, is going to be 19 years old next election day.

And more theocratic, ethnocentric, feudalistic and narcissistic.

hpudding said...

Well, they supported the continuation of slavery, so who knows. But that was a compromise reflecting sectional differences. And they at least supported (and implemented!) an eventual end to the slave trade, as opposed to today’s conservatives who would prop up any industry as long as it’s dirty, exploitative, immoral, and financially powerful enough.

In any event, their revolution reflected European Age of Enlightenment ideals - which you as a conservative are opposed to. Conservatives then as now instead support institutions - which meant theocracy, ethnocracy and absolutist governments such as monarchies or their equivalent today: Authoritarian cults of personality as reflected in the devotion you show Trump. And it really is devotion. Even Trump talks about the “love” shared between his narcissistic self and his empty vessel followers. There are some real psychological issues going on there.

1920s and modern progressives OTOH understand that being a loyal subject to a king or a wage slave to the corporations that have replaced the kingdoms of the past are equally undesirable. Conservatives have simply contented themselves to embrace the replacement of royal power with corporate power and to allow the exploitation of working Americans so that today’s aristocracy can retain the power held by previous centuries’ nobles and royal councils.

Reaganism has returned us to feudalism and ended the increasing prosperity shared by the working class and middle classes that FDR’s progressive policies created in the first place. You should be more up front about your party’s destruction of the middle class, an economic station for which conservatism has no place anyway.
