More news from Maui. The people who survived the fire did so by driving around a police barricade that blocked the only safe road out of town. If you took the attitude that the barricade had to be there for a reason and turned back towards town, odds were that you burned to death.

Neptune’s clouds have disappeared, and scientists think they know why

The ice giant’s ghostly, cirrus-like clouds largely disappeared four years ago. Today, just a patch hovers over the planet’s south pole.

Thanks to an analysis of nearly three decades’ worth of Neptune observations captured by three space telescopes, scientists have determined the ice giant’s diminished clouds may indicate that shifts in their abundance are in sync with the solar cycle, according to a recent study published in the journal Icarus.

“These remarkable data give us the strongest evidence yet that Neptune’s cloud cover correlates with the Sun’s cycle,” said senior study author Imke de Pater, professor emeritus of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, in a news release. “Our findings support the theory that the Sun’s (ultraviolet) rays, when strong enough, may be triggering a photochemical reaction that produces Neptune’s clouds.”

For a minute there, I was afraid the cause was SUVs. Bullet dodged.

I do wonder though- if the sun can affect a planet as far away as Neptune in such fashion, has anyone considered what the effects might be here on Earth? You know, what with all the concern about Global Warming/Boiling in the news lately? Seems like somebody might have thought to look.

SpaceX must always be concerned about ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) with their rocket work. Only U.S. Persons (citizens and Green Card holders) are allowed to work on ITAR programs. Their technology could be illegally exported if they hired a refugee/asylumee who did not have a Green Card. Big fines and prison time for disclosing it to a non-U.S. person.

I worked at Boeing Defense for 35-years. ITAR was always on our minds and we were very careful about protecting our work from non-U.S. persons.

The DOJ is a rogue agency, out to do the Biden Crime Family's dirty work.

There's a theory called the Winter Gatekeeper hypothesis that says the solar activity can affect the pressure in the stratosphere, which regulates how much heat is transferred from the tropics to the poles. When the Sun is inactive, the pressure decreases and allows more heat transfer and the planet cools. When the Sun is active, the pressure increases and throttles the heat transfer, so the planet warms.

So much lefty totalitarian laughter over the years...and always towards the same goals with the same tactics and the same orwellian rhetoric.

I'm tryna work this out.

a) Fani Willis would be a dumb fucking whore, except that she lacks the characteristics necessary to successfully practice an honorable trade like giving blow-jobs to strangers.

b) Nonetheless, if DFW Willis decided that Althouse' blogging during the 20XX election constituted interference in the election affairs of the sovereign state of Willisiana, she could issue a demand that Althouse, a citizen of the State of Wisconsin, and a figure of national prominence, present herself to the Willis, at the Willis' sovereign convenience, to answer for such crimes as the Willis deems her to have committed. The effusions of the Willis are legally considered to be the "lawful actions" of a State, which must, according to the Constitution, be respected by other States.

c) In short, the Willis thing can impose any penalty it deems fit, including death, upon any person subject to the jurisdiction of any of the fifty States. Probably also the territories.

How is this not the occasion of civil war? This is proscription. This is Bill of Attainder. I doubt that the Willis is familiar with those terms, or with any other terms with more than two syllables. If the inhabitants of Willisiana have chosen to subject themselves to this dim, savage monster, I suppose that is arguably their right, and their just reward. But a compact that requires us to submit to this criminal idiot is null and void on its face. If the Constitution is such a compact ...

2023 Wretched Writers Contest:

As Snow White met with her new, cheaper, replacement dwarfs for the first time, shaking hands in turn with the likes of Sweaty, Greasy, and Flabby, aptly named identical twins Grabby and Gropy, and proud owner-of-a-joy-buzzer Scabby, she found herself wondering if the savings would prove to be worth it, and she was about to learn why the others were so afraid of the seventh new dwarf, the oddly named Uzi.

Officer Meyer Briggs burst into the bedroom and saw Professor Rorschach standing over the body of his mother, bloody knife in hand, "I swear it’s not what it looks like!" Rorschach exclaimed.

The second she stepped into my office I knew she was Trubble, Sarah Trubble. She was wearing a name tag and I’m a detective.

Not in the contest as yet:

“The sky above Rice Street was the color of Windows 11 right before it locked up. “It’s not like I have Executive Privilege,” Trump heard someone say as his Secret Service agents shouldered their way through the common rabble and the municipal Deep State wannabes processing them, “It’s more like when my lawyer says STFU I actually listen to her!” It was a shitlib voice and a shitlib joke. Rice Street was a jail for amateur criminals and working class suckers, Democrats all of them. You could be held there for a week and never hear two words from your public defender.”

Jamie said...

Yikes, that mugshot would scare babies, make them cry and give young children nightmares.

Do you ordinarily entertain your grandchildren with picture books of mugshots? Interesting choice.

But more to the point - let's review the reason for a mugshot. Wikipedia says its original purpose was "to allow law enforcement to have a photographic record of an arrested individual to allow for identification by victims, the public and investigators." Is there any version of the universe in which Trump's is not just about the most recognizable face?

So we'll have to move on to Willis's apparent purpose: to attempt to shame a man she seems to hate personally, while also gaining cred personally among her Democrat peers. It certainly bolsters the impression that these prosecutions are not motivated by dedication to the rule of law.

Exactly what face would you have made, Inga, if a prosecutor had decided to use you in this way?

And by the way - why is it so hard for your side to see that threatening a political opponent and his legal advocates with jail time for trying to pursue a robust investigation into election integrity - when so many signs pointed to problems therein - is not a great way to convince people that it was "the purest, cleanest election in history"?

Yes, I saw that article about the disappearance of Neptune's clouds too and had the same reaction. You would think that "the science" could put 2 and 2 together and draw a logical conclusion here regarding the probable effect of such increased activity of the sun on Earth, wouldn't you? Apparently not when "the scientists" are of the political or social type and believe that SUVs and cow farts have more impact on our climate than the sun.

I found out a bit more about the prolife trial going on in DC.
This particular prolife witness was planned and led by a group called Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU). Its leaders are queer or trans. They come out of the movement called Red Rose which is mainly Catholic but they felt that the Catholics weren't in touch with the present generation, didn't understand social media, used Facebook instead of Instagram - but above all, they thought that the Catholics framed their message incorrectly. These progressives were convinced that the left would become prolife if it understood that the unborn were being marginalized, excluded, othered and victimized to a greater extent than any other group. The unborn, they knew, are said to be blobs of jelly, not human, not persons, subject to death at the whim of another person. Who is more victimized than that? The PAAU leaders were sure that when progressives realized that the most vulnerable were the unborn they would rise up and support anti-abortion. (Hence the name of the group: Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising)
The PAAU plan was to go to the Washington Surgi-Clinic which does late-term abortions in quantity in DC and there challenge the evil in the center of its kingdom like Prigozhin marching on Moscow to try to get better leadership for the Ukraine war.
The result was that, for the first time in years FACE Act (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act) charges were brought. These charges are felonies and the defendants can be sentenced to as much as eleven years in prison.
The defendants felt they had evolved a way in which to witness on behalf of the unborn child within the clinics without creating any of the elements of a FACE charge. It is called a Red Rose Action. Essentially, they would find an open or, at least, unlocked door and walk into the clinic waiting room. There they would witness on behalf of the unborn children in that room, all scheduled to die that day, until the police came and hauled them away. They did not block doors, they went in an open door and witnessed. The action does not have the elements of FACE crime because it does not include chaining doors shut or or blocking doors with their bodies as was the case during Operation Rescue in the Nineties.
The WaPo has been attending the trial and, of course, has written up the action of the day as if the PAUU-led action using the Red Rose mode of witness was the same as an Operation Rescue action.
The jury is packed with abortion supporters who have promised to be impartial.
The Judge was the first chief judge on the FISA court and established the precedents by which invasion of e-mails and other social media without search warrants is acceptable in the law if the meta-data is not left on the media after collection. We now know the meta data is saved and the user can be unmasked at the request of just about any elite Dem. But though ready to sanction this kind of access, the Judge is plainly opposed to the Red Rose witness inside late term abortion clinics. She has rejected most of the defense motions and she accused a nun who made the sign of the cross in the courtroom of witness intimidation.
The jury probably will not engage in impartial assessment of the evidence until Monday.
Of course, this is the kind of trial Donald Trump will get in DC. His jury will be filled with Dem donors, Dem Congressional staffers and Dem campaign workers who have all promised to be impartial. The Judge will regard the Constitution as an outmoded, racist piece of white paper. The WaPo will attend like eager dogs being exercised and will excrete opinion as news. A change of venue is in order.
