Here’s what the Ukrainian commentator wrote, using a translation app;

Russia went to Miss Universe in an empress costume (I don't understand how they were allowed to do that)

Even the crickets were silent

At least Russia's costume was not paid by American taxpayers. Ukrainians are frivolous big spenders with nazi genes.

Miss Congeniality (2000) was good, then in Miss Congeniality II she dropped the boyfriend that you bought it for, by phone in the first scene, and went on without him. A genre change from beauty contest to crime. I haven't found the movie for the other end of the call.

Blanchot wrote a couple of unrelated stories where the lead characters in each it turned out were communicating by phone with each other, just to ruin genre classifications.

I don't suppose these girls were on the phone.

The Ukrainian contestant should have dressed as Katniss Everdeen. Girl on fire……

I doubt the trained seals would have banged their flippers together like that if Miss Utah had come onstage in an angel costume.
Those wings are badass though. I wonder what they cost and who paid for them? The US taxpayers? And wouldn't that be a violation of the separation of church and state?

Can she fly?

I suppose it would be poor taste to go Kathy Griffin and come out holding a severed head. That's only appropriate when applied to Donald Trump. Still, it must be said that Miss Ukraine has a far better outfit than Miss Russia. She scores points on the outfit, but their looks are interchangeable. If Miss Venezuela wears a thong bikini, the prize should go to her. Let's not forget what this contest is all about.

And don't tell me Utah isn't in the Miss Universe Pageant. I know that.

I guess Trump unloaded the Miss Universe pageant, so we can talk about it again.

I read Russian and Polish well, so I could read all of the Ukrainian tweet except the last line.

I have not learned Ukrainian pronunciation, but I usually can figure out most Ukrainian printed writing.

Because of the English translation, I now know that one key word in the last line means "crickets", which makes sense to me now. Even with the English translation, though, I do not understand the very last word.

======

In Ukrainian, most words are similar to a Russian and/or a Polish word.

If I could read only Russian or only Polish (not both), then my understanding of the Ukrainian tweet would be very sketchy.

Sir Loin said...

I'm going with the Russian contestant and her velvet gown. With those wings, Miss Ukraine would knock over the bong, getting in and out of the car would be a hassle, and she couldn't buy clothes off the rack.

At first glance, I thought that's what it was.

I may be among the minority, but I preferred the Russian costume to the Ukrainian one. I like my angels to be more Biblical - all wheels and lots of eyes. If you're going to put army helmets on her wings, at least give her a flaming sword.

n.n said...

Is that a scalpel? The audacity of violence. Pretty girl.

My lady, the empress. Pretty girl.

So even Miss Russia is revanchist; looking back to the Czars for her dress. It is a subtle geopolitical statement. And it makes an otherwise fine dress ugly.

Miss U is women being women, not men pretending to be women.

And a lot fewer crotch shots.

And it's not targeted at minors as an "educational event".

Apparently, the costumes had to go thru a review. Ukraine was allowed to pageant their current predicament. Russia was allowed to relive their pageant past.

I guess...

In the 16C/17C, a section of Polish heavy cavalry, called "winged hussars," wore "wings" to battle. It was considered intimidating and the force was very effective for 200 years. In 1610 5,000 winged hussars defeated 35,000 Russians. Miss Ukraine's costume refers to this tradition. The costume differs in many respects from the traditional winged hussar costume but then Miss Russia does not really resemble the Russian emperor, Peter the Great. Nor does she resemble Putin. Although I think she's going to lose.

Somehow video footage from the era has been obtained.

It's not a casting couch. No friends with "benefits". No one is ordered to take a knee, beg, etc. The pageant is a celebration of the whole woman in all her splendid feminine fury.

fury (n.)

late 14c., "fierce passion," from Old French furie, fuire "rage, frenzy" (14c.), from Latin furia "violent passion, rage, madness," from or related to furere "to rage, be mad," which is of uncertain origin. "Many etymologies have been proposed, but none is clearly the best" [de Vaan]. Romans used Furiæ to translate Greek Erinyes, the collective name for the avenging deities sent from Tartarus to punish criminals (in later accounts three in number and female).

Ideally, more passion than other.

I see I forgot to mention that the winged hussars were part of the Polish-Lithuanian Confederation which included much of Ukraine.

I don't get the point of the costume phase of the competition. It has zero to do with the contestants. Not their looks, not their poise, not their style, not their talent, not their creativity. All curated. Don't get me started on the makeup. I want a contest where the contestants can't wear makeup and can only get their outfits from Target.

Yes, I still appreciate women. The beauty pageants I remember involved women in evening dresses. There was a fashion show element to the contest.

What I see today looks like a Marvel comic book! They even called the woman with wings...."Archangel".

The Facts of the Matter Are
Pretty Much, the ONLY women IN THE WORLD hotter than russian babes, are the Ukraine girls
THIS IS WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING FOR!

dbp said...

The Ukrainian costume was, a better costume. The Russian outfit made the contestant look very sexy and beautiful.

Russia wins this round.

The outfits were so different, I have no idea which woman was prettier. I'm sure they're both knock-outs though.

Not sure I understand the comment “…an inspiration to all” with a blue heart.

I’m pretty sure those wings (impressive, even at a Comic-Con) beat out every country, not just Russia.

@Lem, the translation I retrieved read “even the crickets did not shriek.” That has to be a literal translation of the words; I put it into more idiomatic English. Just as “Rodina” is usually translated as “Motherland” or “Mother Russia “ but “Rodina” is more like “land of my birth” (or so I was taught 60 years ago in college). I remember watching a German language movie where a character said something about potatoes in his ears, but the English subtitle said “Do you think I am deaf?”

@Meade,” thank you — I think.

That was my thought too, men are men, are we not?

"In Scotland, in 1862, Circassian chiefs arrived to advocate their cause against Russia and to persuade Britain to stop the actions of the Russian army at that time,[25] and upon the arrival of two Circassian leaders, Hadji Hayder Hassan and Kustan Ogli Ismael, the Dundee Advertiser reported that "the Chiefs are two remarkable looking men. Their imposing bearing, their romantic dress ... and their natural dignity of mien, stamp them as very superior ... Raven haired, black-bearded, broad-browed, with wide springing eyebrows of sooty black ... these bronzed and armed children of the mountains tend to put us out of love with our own specimens of men, and suggests thoughts not complementary to the types of manhood which, in this country, they are surrounded."

"An anthropological literary suggests that Circassians were best characterized by what was called "rosy pale" or "translucent white skin". While most Circassian tribes were famous for abundance of fair or dark blond and red hair combined with greyish-blue or green eyes,[12] many also had the pairing of very dark hair with very light complexions, a typical feature of Peoples of the Caucasus.[13] Many of the Circassian women in the Ottoman harem were described as having "green eyes and long, dark blond hair, pale skin of translucent white colour, thin waist, slender body structure, and very good-looking hands and feet".

The world has long been attracted to the people of the Caucasian mountains. They are commented on as the original and ideal race. They have, in the Harems, borne the Arab fathers children.

Dagistani, Caucasian, Ukrainian. All are similar. I bet Miss Russia is a decedent of Caucasians or the Kievian Rus.

But this never happened. We can't have racism.

Josephbleau said...

I have to put what I said in context. What are the two styles of women? Of course that is Betty and Veronica. We see the blonde Betty as the open curvy mildly fat individual. Veronica is slim yet rich, and dark.

We can classify women into Betty and Veronica with error.

Huh? As non-corporeal beings, angels do not have gender. Referring to angels as "he" is a reflection of proper grammar, not gender identity.

Since Miss Ukraine represents Saint Michael, does this mean that she will go medieval on Mooby's boardroom?

You should look up Miss Poland's costume from 2021. Wings like the legendary Polish Winged Hussar cavalry and a giant Polish flag.

https://newsbeezer.com/polandeng/polish-woman-at-the-miss-universe-pageant-in-the-wings-of-the-hussars/

The Polish cavalry, led by the Polish king Jan Sobieski, famously broke the Second Siege of Vienna on Sept 12, 1683.
