So renegade Cochise County has certified election results (which favored GOP!) under court ordered deadline, and Kari Lake and her lawyers have been sanctioned by a federal judge for a frivolous lawsuit against Maricopa County pre-dating the election. On to Georgia!

OK, I was reading a book today that I don't recommend to anybody, but that I am reading for a personal project, The Prairie, by Cooper, and if anybody gets through this excerpt, I am pretty sure they won't read the book, but it reminded me so much of the excerpt from Moby Dick about eating the whale blubber.

Two men were intently occupied in a swale that lay along the borders of a little run, just out of cannon-shot from the encampment, discussing the merits of a savoury bison’s hump, that had been prepared for their palates with the utmost attention to the particular merits of that description of food. The choice morsel had been judiciously separated from the adjoining and less worthy parts of the beast, and, enveloped in the hairy coating provided by nature, it had duly undergone the heat of the customary subterraneous oven, and was now laid before its proprietors in all the culinary glory of the prairies. So far as richness, delicacy, and wildness of flavour, and substantial nourishment were concerned, the viand might well have claimed a decided superiority over the meretricious cookery and laboured compounds of the most renowned artist; though the service of the dainty was certainly achieved in a manner far from artificial. It would appear that the two fortunate mortals, to whose happy lot it fell to enjoy a meal in which health and appetite lent so keen a relish to the exquisite food of the American deserts, were far from being insensible of the advantage they possessed.

I have to hand the win to Melville, in this case.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, the leader of the strike on Pearl Harbor remarked that the sunrise reminded him of ther national flag. It must have looked a lot like the upper picture. He thought if it as a good omen, and it was, for that air strike. For the war as a whole, not so much.

Or maybe that first picture is supposed to more resemble the Arizona state flag.

I came back to my computer and thought, wow, Althouse has had a busy day today. Then I realized that I'd left it on the Lee Siegel tag page and there were 18 years worth of interesting posts.

Wasn't Guillermo del Toro a recent topic? I was rewatching Nightmare Alley the other night (I wasn't completely sure it was by him until I checked). I wanted to see if there was something in it that I missed. But no, it was as awful and forgettable as it was the first time. It has a dark, beautiful film noir look, but it rambles and never gets around to an actual story. Still, no puppets and no children tortured to death, so that makes it one of his more appealing films.

Democratic Arizona Secretary of State and Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs’ top deputy threatened the Mohave County Board of Supervisors with prosecution if it didn’t certify her election results before a Monday deadline, according to emails and documents reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Arizona State Elections Director Kori Lorick wrote several letters and emails to members of the board, warning them of criminal charges if the refused to certify the results in time.

LOL, what does a certification mean if it doesn't involve due diligence to ensure that the vote was accurate and fair? Nothing, I guess. In an honest election, Hobbs would have recused herself rather than pulling this kind of banana republic tactic. Instead she ran an incredibly flawed election, where thousands of voters were disenfranchised on Election Day by very convenient errors that were easily avoided with a little testing. Then she threatens arrest and imprisonment for anybody who questions it.

The Ye thread is getting bulky, so I'll drag a strand up here.

I was talking to an ex-colleague and friend, a military historian, the other night and the Nuremberg Trials came up. He had not realized that few victims testified-- the great bulk of the evidence was from the documentary records of the perps.

In addition, none of the accused tried denying all the shit that was done: that came later, and from different quarters in a different context. The Nazis in the dock blamed each other and YKW, and were always only following orders . . .

When Harry met Sally is out on Netflix. Haven’t seen it in years. If anything, it’s gotten better with age…everyone involved in it at the peak of their powers, from the adorable Meg Ryan to the peerless Billy Crystal, smokin Carrie Fisher. The soundtrack made harry connick jr The Next Big Thing. And Nora Ephron, what a classic, old Hollywood style tight Ben Hecht-like writer. A talent like hers has not been seen since. Like Leo Tolstoy, there is some autobiographical aspect in the main characters of either sex. Not many women can write a decent male character. The only other one that springs to mind is Jane Austen, Edith Wharton.. But Ephron’s harry is a gem, written with authentic affection for The Way Men Are. And does she nail it. Lovely to see it again, shame Hollywood is incapable of it now.

The Ukraine war is so hard to follow. Ukraine keeps operational silence and the Russians lie. So I can only guess at what's happening but seems to me that right at this moment the rucial battle of the war is on: namely whether the Russian people or the Ukrainian people will break first. The Russians have had a sort of deal with their monster government that if they are non-political and don't criticize the government, then the government will leave them alone. But the mobilization is breaking that deal. Making all allowances for propaganda it really does seem that the Russians are hurling the mobilized, the mobiks, who are untrained, poorly armed men into combat and that the Ukrainians are shooting the mobiks down in huge numbers. Mobiks are sons and husbands and they are phoning home with reports on dire conditions or still worse, they are not phoning home which, in the day of the cell phone, suggests disaster. And what will happen when the real cold comes and the mobilized don't have winter clothing and their families find this out? Silence isn't protecting any more; silence is enabling the government to force a loved one into becoming a freezing mobik in the Ukraine. Meanwhile the Russians are bombing infrastructure to make Ukrainian civilians as miserable as Russian mobiks. Who will break first?

Mobiks' Song
If you're going to the Ukraine war
Be sure to wave a white flag in the air;
In field of wheat and sunflower
They grow some warriors there.

If you're going to the Ukraine war
Be sure to wave a white flag in the air.
All across that nation, there's a single sensation -
Freedom in motion, freedom's emotion.

If you're going to the Ukraine war
Be sure to wave a white flag in the air.
In fields of wheat and sunflower,
Mobiks sleep forever there.

If you're going to the Ukraine war
Be sure to wave a white flag in the air.

(Fits the tune of San Francisco [Be sure to wear flowers in your hair] another anti-war song.)

There's a Youtube series where young people listen to songs from the past for the first time. It was very interesting to hear them trying to work out Hotel California by the Eagles and American Pie by Don McLean on hearing them for the first time. But the best one was the Rob Squad - two young people - hearing Imagine by John Lennon for the first time. They wanted it posted everywhere and to be listened to by everyone. It brought back the time so, in memory of that, here's the link to Imagine heard by twenty-somethings for the first time in 2021.

The 11th Circuit has vacated Aileen Cannon’s order enjoining the government from investigating Donald Trump, remanding it with an order to dismiss the suit. Warrants authorize the seizure of personal property as a general rule and there is no special legal standing for ex-presidents.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, the Federal DC Grand Jury judge investigating Jan 6 has ordered Trump lawyers Pat Cipollone and Patrick Philbin to return for additional questioning and has rejected all kinds of Trump privilege claims.

Awesome, thanks for sharing that.

Godard was a Commie but even Godard had respect for movie producers (a.k.a. the money men).

The Sex Pistols once mocked the fuck out of a record company.

E.M.I.

That impressed the shit out of a lot of music people! Even more than mocking the queen.

But emotional artists need smart (calm and cautious) money people to look after them. Not rob them blind! But to support the art.

Here's my review of Wall Street, Oliver Stone's attempt to attack capitalism.

#3162 Wall Street (1987)

It’s like a socialist version of Dracula, with Michael Douglas as the bloodsucker. Actually, he’s an investment banker. But he brags about what a vampire he is. “I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal.” He gives a speech about greed that’s rather like a vampire giving a pep talk to the villagers about lust. “The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed is good. Greed is right. Greed works.”

Charlie Sheen is Jonathan Harker, or maybe Mina. He goes into the skyscraper castle to work for the beast, but he gets bitten himself. And now he’s given into his dark side. Martin Sheen is aghast. Oh no, my son has developed a taste for material wealth! So he’s like Van Helsing. Wants to put a stake in the vampire’s heart. He’s a union guy. You know he’s carrying a moldy copy of Das Kapital around with him. “Create, instead of living off the buying and selling of others.” So I guess that means you ought to go to art school instead of business school.

I don’t think I’d want to be Oliver Stone’s agent. He’d always be yelling at me. “Create! Instead of living off the buying and selling of others!”

“But Oliver, if I don’t help get your art out into the marketplace, then nobody knows who you are. You’re just another poor anonymous starving artist living in a cave in some grotto in Paris. So I feel like I earn my 10%.”

“Vampire!”

boom! nailed it

love that movie

got to give credit also to the male director (Rob Reiner) and stand-up comic Billy Crystal (who, I suspect, did a lot of improv).

The only way I can write female characters is by stealing from people in my life. That's how you do it, I think.

Instead of imagining a male from scratch (ugh) a female writer should take a real male from her life (or past) and disguise the heck out of him. (Ephron definitely does that).

From Dave Blaska's blog (on the sidebar):

"Released on no bail

A 29-year-old man was shot Tuesday 11-29-33 in broad daylight in downtown Madison. Police are searching for a 40-year-old man that they consider “armed and dangerous” as the primary suspect. Madison Police have further stated the suspect has no known address in Madison. That much has been reported and covered in our local media and the suspect’s identity is now known.

What is being left unsaid is that that suspect, Lamar A. Jefferson, was in custody literally the day before the shooting and released with no bail. In other words, our Dane County Court System released a man who is now “armed and dangerous” back into our community where he allegedly shot a man a day later and is now on the run.

The Republican Party of Dane County calls on our local leaders, especially District Attorney Ismael Ozanne to provide answers.

More on gadfly's victory lap:

President Trump’s lawyers have been: (1) blocked from receiving a non-redacted search warrant; (2) denied access to the underlying probable cause affidavit used to predicate the search warrant, and (3) denied the full contents of the documents that were seized as part of the warrant (they are not allowed to see). Yet somewhere in this convoluted mess, we are supposed to believe a 4th amendment violation doesn’t exist.

‘wildswan’ erupted with sudden hate for ‘mobiks’ and poisoned the discourse somewhat. But if ‘mobiks’ are poorly trained and equipped Russian soldiers sent to slaughter, why the contempt and derision? Is it not enough to pity them?

I think the answer is that ‘wildswan’ simply regurgitates Ukrainian propaganda. That is where pejorative ‘mobik’ term comes from. Certainly Russians don’t use it. Naturally, it is vital for Ukranians to demoralize new Russian reinforcement troops. To demoralize the enemy most effectively, show both scorn and pity. Best way, make a song of it. Propaganda 101.

Fair question. Without knowing the behavior leading up to his arrest, I think it's just a Class B misdemeanor, but if something else was going on or if he had a history, there may have been a reason that bail was warranted.
