"Sam, born during a Texas covid surge in July, 2020, is typical of what some experts are calling an 'immunity gap.'"

"He was cared for at home by his father for his first eighteen months, so he avoided the usual viral infections of infancy. When he started day care this year, his immune system was fairly naïve to infections, except for those covered by his vaccines. So, like many kids his age... he is getting all of them now. Before covid, the cohort of kids under age one would be exposed for the first time each winter. This year, a much larger cohort of kids—not just kids in the first winter of life but also older toddlers like Sam—are getting their first infections. For the millions of children whose important kid work—learning, development, and play—is being interrupted by back-to-back infections, the medical response feels terrifically inadequate...."

The saddest thing that has happened in the last two years is what was done to children for the comfort and self-preservation of adults. And much of it was nothing more than politics and career protection.

The push for child mRNA shots is an entirely different level of screwed up. What type of adults make kids suffer for their own self-preservation? Who uses a kid as a medical guinea pig?

That is now our country and society. Nobody is more guilty of pushing this abuse and neglect than the liberal education establishment.

Wow no shit. Shame no one predicted this starting in March 2020. Maybe some of you can remember. Maybe it'll stir your memory if I share the phrases 'freedumb,' 'covidiots,' 'grandma killers,' 'science deniers.'

We were right, you were wrong, and I personally will never ever forgive you for the harm your stupidity, arrogance and spite caused for everyone else.

Also, a larger cohort of young parents who are not used to having sick kids. The outpatient offices are getting pummeled, too, with visits and phone calls.

So a political response to a medical issue yields less than desirable outcomes?

Who could have seen *that* coming?

The higher flu and cold rates are also causing shortages of pediatric medicines- amoxicillin for ear infections and Tamils for the flu.

My kids are 10 and 7, and our family (not just kids but parents too) has run the gauntlet of illnesses over the past six weeks. COVID, flu, and various unspecified viral infections. Happily none have been too serious. Interestingly, the one with COVID did not pass it to any of the rest of us.

This simply cannot be. Saint Anthony would have warned us!

A couple months ago, when certain anti-establishment voices were blaming the rise in pediatric hospitalizations on the public health leaders and the American academy of pediatrics because of their pro-lockdown stance, arguing precisely the above point about immunity, the response from the media was an all-out gaslighting. Article after article interviewing “experts” saying there’s no such thing as immunity gap, it’s a conspiracy theory, etc, etc. now that it’s undeniable, reality once again catches up to conspiracy. Glad to see the New Yorker cover it.

Bottom line, as my blog’s motto so eloquently puts it: AAP delenda est.

When I was a kid, mother's would organize measles, and pox parties. The message was "Get over it kid".

Michael K said...

The masking and isolation of children will leave scars for years. Maybe into adulthood.

There was a reason that mothers took toddlers to "chickenpox parties." My wife had chicken pox at age 16 and nearly died. Aside from these immediate consequences, we don't know what the long term effects might be.

Anyone who has seen the grainy videos of Dr. George Carlin's Olde Time Traveling Medicine Show on strengthening your immune system would be unsurprised by this development.

Ignorance can be cured, but in the case of progressives stupid is forever.

The rise--and subsequent fall of polio in the USA from say 1910 to the early 1950s and the arrival of successful polio vaccines offers a lesson.

The "bad kind" of polio---paralysis, the need for an iron lung, and such is in some ways a disease of cleanliness. The polio virus exists in the gut of nearly everyone. Until water and sewer sanitation systems improved in cities most children had a mild attack of polio while they were five years old--or younger. But if one hadn't had such an attack until they reached pubescence or young adulthood then the onset of poliomyelitis had severe consequences. FDR was a young adult when polio attacked him--and his legs were paralyzed.
After 1910 or so mothers were terrified when the summer came and their children wanted to go to community swimming pools--a likely place for infection. I knew two men who had contracted polio while attending college football games in the early 1950s.

Now I'm not against public sanitation--but actions, events, and lockdowns have multiple unintended (I'm being charitable here to the power made progressive elites of the country) consequences. I agree with Michael K that the masking and isolation of children will leave scars for years.

How does isolating kids and thereby blocking natural immunity differ from pediatric anti-vaxxing?

The effects of Covid cruelty will linger. Policy was always disproportionate, as was pointed in 2020. Authoritarian prog control was medically pointless and unjust from the start. The mark of prog hegemony is that no one will be held accountable.

Thank God for Elon Musk. He is bravely calling out Fauci’s funding of “Gain of Function” research for EXACTLY what it is. Bio-weapon development.

It’s mad scientist bullshit. The ethical question regarding it is not “can we” but “should we”. No, you shouldn’t. But Fauci did. And then lied, and lied, and lied…

What is the benefit to mankind to take a dangerous virus that cannot naturally transfer from and animal species to humans and make it transferable? Anybody? Bueller???

The CDC and the Democrats will never admit that this is just one of the kind of trade-off that the extended lockdowns predictably have. (Like 2 years of remote schooling for inner city kids.) We don't even know how much long-term damage to immune systems of infants from the extended isolation in the first 3 years of their lives has had. But it's all good as afar as the Big Pharma and Big Healthcare is concerned. Vaccinations for every season forever. I'm sure anyone predicting this on Twitter or Facebook in 2020 would've been banned.

Self-preservation. Self-affirmation. Levine, for one.

Measles parties are probably a bad idea. Measles is a very very bad disease. Probably chickenpox parties. Chickenpox is generally a benign disease for young people.

There was a reason that mothers took toddlers to "chickenpox parties."

The young cohorts were infected, developed a mild disease, and recovered quickly with durable and robust immunity. Something similar was observed with polio.

Isolation at any age causes reduced immunity. 6 months of isolation can reduce immune system response by 50%. We need to be constantly exposed to the various things floating around the human community to keep our immune systems strong.

Re masks-
I remain convinced that re-breathing viruses and bacteria that all of us exhale is a very very bad idea. To the extent that a mask works, it traps microorganisms that otherwise would drift down to the ground and become nonviable. Inhaling them on the next breath gives them a new chance to infect the mask wearer. We developed the cough and sneeze response for a reason. It's common sense not to cough or sneeze such that the products can be inhaled by another person, but other than that, it's best to get that bad stuff away.
The only reason that we survive is that the mask does not work and most of the exhaled bad bugs are not trapped.
That means that the masks don't prevent infections, but they are still effective in limiting communication and retarding growth and development in children.

The ripples from the lockdown will go on for a long time.

Not just the mandates. The non-sterilizing treatments are known to produce antigenic tolerance. The people who acquired natural immunity should be safe. The vaccinated are probably not. The vulnerable will be exposed on a forward-looking basis without knowledge.
