Senator Markey's thuggish tweet.

The embedded tweet invites us to click "Read the full conversation on Twitter." But in case you're old fashioned and enjoy the reading here on a real blog, I'll tell you that Patterico amplifies his insight with this:

"The only thing Twitter “must” do in response to your thuggish tweet is whatever Twitter feels like doing. The thing Twitter *should* do is to tell you, Senator Edward Markey, to go fuck yourself."

What a dipshit tyrant Ed Markey is! He set a deadline and he wanted a letter and, failing that, he's threatening to use government power to retaliate.

And note that word "safety."  That's the newfangled alternative to freedom.

I'm considering following/monitoring Ed "Safety" Markey just to be... safe:

Whole thing sums up the Left v. the Right problem.

The federal and state constitutions are intended to LIMIT government. This is what bothers the Left. They want more government (explaining why they hold up China as a model) so that the people can be restricted. We by contrast want the government restricted.

They try, really hard, to place the quote in the immediate context of a taxation dispute. I remain unconvinced. It clearly has a broader application.

Rephrase this as an "Autocratic old-money politician's thuggish tweet."

The left today combines a naive, anarachic, and dependent group of 'free stuff for everyone' utopians (e.g., AOC, Bernie Sanders, Senator Warren) with oligarchic overlords who pull the strings. The utopians don't know or admit that they are being manipulated.

In building on FDR's legacy: the wealthy establishment bribes voters with enough giveaways (aka a chicken in every pot) to gain votes, and then propagandizes, bullies, and spends to preserve their hegemony. Yes I mean you Senator Markey, Speaker Pelosi, Senator Feinstein, Senator Schumer, Statist "Republican" Senator McConnell, Failed Presidential Candidate Michael Bloomberg, the wooden marionette formerly holding Joe Biden's living brain, and many more.

Good for Patterico on calling out Senator Markey, but Patterico prefaces his tweet by virtue signaling that he can't stand Elon Musk. My guess one reason he can't stand Musk is because Musk reinstated Trump and Patterico is fine with censorship as long as it's done under the fig leaf of Twitter being a private company.
Patterico seems to be in the same camp as David French and Jonah Goldberg.

I hope Musk releases the entire record of requests for removal of tweets made to Twitter by the media and by the government.

Temujin said...

Markey is just another lifer Senator heaped on us from the State of Massachusetts, who does nothing if not destroy the strengths of this country. Like so many on the Left, he deliberately misuses words to change their actual meaning, and thus give them new meaning to intensify his power (or the State's power). In this case, taking the phrase 'user safety' and making it their own. Making it so it has nothing at all to do with user safety, but has everything to do with Democratic control of social media.

The Democrats, for a few years now, have enjoyed ownership of both our language and the media with which to amplify the language, without pushback. Suddenly, they've lost control of one thing. One solid, but small thing in comparison to the entirety of the media they control. And they are panicking about letting loose the language, letting other ideas spill into the common areas of life. It gets harder to control the people when they are allowed to have other thoughts.

Edward Markey is a United States Senator, and this is what he stands for, and how he uses his position. The other Senator from that state is Elizabeth Warren, who frankly, is an even worse abuser of language and power. It could be argued that in our beginning as a country, Massachusetts was the seed place of our ideas of freedom. At the very least, the fighter at the front of those ideas. It has long ago left those ideas behind, as represented by who they send to Congress today.

Ed Markey Listens to Rap Music for the First Time

Do I pat the black people on the head for their amazing rhythm and courage?

Or do I yell at them for their misogyny?

And the N word! Oh my goodness. Multiple N words. Trigger, trigger, trigger, and trigger.

Holy shit, what if he's white?

How do we know if he's Black?

He could sound Black and be white. And even if he's black, he might not be Black black. Might be Kanye black. We ought to call a subcommittee.

Hey, hey, hey. I got it, I got it. What if we replace the N word with the word "trigger" in the song? Holy fuck I'm a genius. We keep the tempo of the song -- we all love the tempo, nothing wrong with the rhythm, you just keep rhyming and griming, kind of hard to rhyme on the fly, I can't dunk either, you keep doing what you do, rappers. All we're doing is a little word substitution. To protect the kids, you know? Cause it's expensive trying to authenticate your shit. I mean, look at that Wollumbin nightmare. Damn authentic people with their damn authentic misogyny. What the fuck rhymes with Wollumbin? Nothing. But trigger definitely rhymes with the N word, if I said the N word. And it's a helpful lesson for everyone! Take it from me, Ed Markey. Let's get that subcommittee rolling on this. We're meeting up on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. And you Republicans better meet my deadline! Or else!

Ah, socialism of the German pattern, the Zwangswirtschaft [compulsory economy] of the Nazis.
===============

"The Dictatorial, Anti-Democratic and Socialist Character of Interventionism

"Many advocates of interventionism are bewildered when one tells them that in recommending interventionism they themselves are fostering anti-democratic and dictatorial tendencies and the establishment of totalitarian socialism. They protest that they are sincere believers and opposed to tyranny and socialism. What they aim at is only the improvement of the conditions of the poor. They say that they are driven by considerations of social justice, and favour a fairer distribution of income precisely because they are intent upon preserving capitalism and its political corollary or superstructure, viz., democratic government.

"What these people fail to realize is that the various measures they suggest are not capable of bringing about the beneficial results aimed at. On the contrary they produce a state of affairs which from the point of view of their advocates is worse than the previous state which they were designed to alter. If the government, faced with this failure of its first intervention, is not prepared to undo its interference with the market and to return to a free economy, it must add to its first measure more and more regulations and restrictions. Proceeding step by step on this way it finally reaches a point in which all economic freedom of individuals has disappeared. Then socialism of the German pattern, the Zwangswirtschaft of the Nazis, emerges."

#1 Steven Symms of Idaho
#2 Gordon Humphrey of New Hampshire

All of Spy Magazine is now available online for free at Google Books. I loved the magazine when it came out. Yes, it was political with a predictable political spin -- Symms and Humphrey were Republicans -- but politics wasn't their whole reason for being. Trump was one of their favorite targets (the others were Abe Rosenthal and Bret Easton Ellis), but not for political reasons. You could sense (or should sense) that the Spy crew were a bit clownish themselves, going over the top with their satire. Their attacks didn't seem as real or as venomous as attacks are now, and you could suppose that the people they ridiculed might not always deserve it. Ed Markey probably did.

Spy and David Letterman were two big reasons critics viewed the Nineties as an Age of Irony that they thought would come to an end with 9/11. That didn't happen. The head of Raytheon was Charles Francis Adams IV, of the famous Boston family. His successor, Thomas L. Phillips, was the father of Spy's founding publisher. I saw a little sic transit gloria mundi for the American empire in that, and Lloyd Austin isn't great evidence to the contrary.

Not to say it isn't thuggish, but senators writing letters to private businesses and demanding they respond is pretty normal -- he's on the Subcommittee on Communication, Media, and Broadband and the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, so him sending letters to Twitter demanding information doesn't strike me as at all out of the ordinary. Even if it's not a congressional subpoena, companies often cooperate with these sorts of informal requests, even if dumb, just to avoid provoking legislative retaliation. I mean, that's the thuggishness, I suppose, but that thuggishness is just the background thuggishness implicit in any act or request by any government official. Where they have discretion -- and legislators, unlike executive branch bureaucrats, really ought to have wide discretion -- that's just an inevitable side effect.

Great check. I used to read Spy regularly back in the day. Didn't understand half of it because of the heavy NYC orientation. Though I had only a vague idea of who he was at the time, the two things that have stuck with me were the references to the "short-fingered vulgarian" trump and the cover with the cute young thing (maybe wearing a Santa Claus hat) holding a little dog, with the caption "Buy this magazine or we'll kill this dog."
