I can’t stand Elon Musk but that is not relevant to your thuggish tweet. The only thing Congress “must” do when it comes to speech by private citizens is leave us the fuck alone. https://t.co/7XuDLCb5mm

The embedded tweet invites us to click "Read the full conversation on Twitter." But in case you're old fashioned and enjoy the reading here on a real blog, I'll tell you that Patterico amplifies his insight with this:
"The only thing Twitter “must” do in response to your thuggish tweet is whatever Twitter feels like doing. The thing Twitter *should* do is to tell you, Senator Edward Markey, to go fuck yourself."
What a dipshit tyrant Ed Markey is! He set a deadline and he wanted a letter and, failing that, he's threatening to use government power to retaliate.
And note that word "safety." That's the newfangled alternative to freedom.
I'm considering following/monitoring Ed "Safety" Markey just to be... safe:

Ed Markey is pushing a bill to codify Net Neutrality, the rationale being that internet providers might block unfavored users.
I saw the dipshit tyrants at the orpheum in ‘84…
Whole thing sums up the Left v. the Right problem.
The federal and state constitutions are intended to LIMIT government. This is what bothers the Left. They want more government (explaining why they hold up China as a model) so that the people can be restricted. We by contrast want the government restricted.
Rage against the machine, Althouse!
The Massachusetts coalition has hot nothing on their appendix of a neighbor Rhode Island what with that Whitehead guy that wanted to jail climate scientists for wrongthink. The Massholes are happy to jawbone for their people then slither away so long as the graft is still flowing.
Rep Lynch is the worst one. He used to get his hair cut same time as me. That man’s a walking grease stain.

All authoritarian leftist Democratics like Markey - should go F themselves
"Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
NPR tried to make the case for safety over liberty, back in 2015:
Ben Franklin's Famous 'Liberty, Safety' Quote Lost Its Context In 21st Century
They try, really hard, to place the quote in the immediate context of a taxation dispute. I remain unconvinced. It clearly has a broader application.
The whole "safety" thing is bullshit. In real life, if something is unsafe you avoid it, or exercise proper precautions. Elon should just put big "trigger warnings" throughout the site. Make the children happy!
Masked up outdoors says it all.
Rephrase this as an "Autocratic old-money politician's thuggish tweet."
The left today combines a naive, anarachic, and dependent group of 'free stuff for everyone' utopians (e.g., AOC, Bernie Sanders, Senator Warren) with oligarchic overlords who pull the strings. The utopians don't know or admit that they are being manipulated.
In building on FDR's legacy: the wealthy establishment bribes voters with enough giveaways (aka a chicken in every pot) to gain votes, and then propagandizes, bullies, and spends to preserve their hegemony. Yes I mean you Senator Markey, Speaker Pelosi, Senator Feinstein, Senator Schumer, Statist "Republican" Senator McConnell, Failed Presidential Candidate Michael Bloomberg, the wooden marionette formerly holding Joe Biden's living brain, and many more.
The Democrats are scared to death that they will no longer be able together the fbi to stop citizens from expressing their opinions. The advantage democrats got from donations by fraudsters is also at risk. Everything they have worked so hard for is falling apart.
Senator Markey wants Twitter-using citizens to be safe from links to articles about Hunter Biden's laptop, from links to Babylon Bee jokes, and from links to comments that say "Learn to code."
You think he's being stupid and thuggish. This is a guy who has a picture of himself wearing a mask, with "Climate Activism" and "Green New Deal" signs on his Twitter page.
Who gets reelected with over 60 percent of the vote.
Stupid and thuggish is very popular.
For sure, but don't leave out the people of Massachusetts who voted for him (66% of them in the 2020 election).
Ed Markey is so popular his fellow Mass residents have named two towns after him!

Another AA post that our resident Leftists avoid like the plague.
Or maybe they can explain to us why Markey's stance is defensible.
The Democrats are making a thing out of FDR’s “Four Freedoms” - Free Speech, Freedom of Religion, Free from Fear, and Freedom from Want. They apparently think freedom from fear Trumps freedom of speech.
Patterico also said this in response to the same Ed Markey tweet:
You sound like a dumbass Republican. What are you, Ted Cruz? Josh Hawley? Seriously, fuck off
Ed Markey was featured in Spy Magazine's 1989 story "Mr. Stupid goes to Washington." He was number 3 on the list, just ahead of Sen. Al D'Amato. Quote from a Massachusetts political operative: If you stopped 2,000 people on Capitol Hill and asked them about Eddie, you wouldn't find one who didn't think he was a jerk.
Ah patrick you didnt realize that markey cowrote section 230 whose abuse turned thd world into minitrue which allowed brett kimberlin to assault you an officer of the law
Good for Patterico on calling out Senator Markey, but Patterico prefaces his tweet by virtue signaling that he can't stand Elon Musk. My guess one reason he can't stand Musk is because Musk reinstated Trump and Patterico is fine with censorship as long as it's done under the fig leaf of Twitter being a private company.
Patterico seems to be in the same camp as David French and Jonah Goldberg.
I hope Musk releases the entire record of requests for removal of tweets made to Twitter by the media and by the government.
Did the good Senator stamp his well-shod foot and pout furiously when Elon failed to reply to his little ultimatum?
Ann calls him a “dipshit tyrant.” That’s a start, but let’s not think that belittling him will make him stop. The greatest evils are authored by moral midgets like him, claiming to “care” for our “safety.”
Do we not pipe water to New England states? None of these men look like they've had a shower in years. What is that?
"User safety"
that's a hell of a thing

don't worry!
done by professionals!
completely safe
but watch out for that DIY phenomenon
anything is dangerous if it's done by amateurs or children or Republicans or billionaires
I mean, talking and communication
whoa
that's a mine field
do you have a license for that?
it's very dangerous
you could be exposed to ideas that wreck your life
idea exposure!
idea exposure!
what if it's Russian?
Holy shit!
foreign ideas, infiltrating us, getting into our minds
what if it's Abba music?
ear worms, you ever try to get rid of ear worms?

Ed Markey Walks Into a Public Library
Holy shit! Russian books. You've got Russian books in your library.
From Russia!
Who authorized all these Russian books?
Who bought them?
Who paid for them?
Listen to me, you stupid librarian
This is a certified letter
Certified by me, Ed Markey
I want a list of all your Russian books
Especially the Russian books produced in the Putin era
and I want this list on my desk by 3:00 p.m. Tuesday
and you better meet my deadline
or I'm going to Twitter
Young minds are a terrible thing to poison with Russian disinformation!

They named Stoneham after Dukakis.
Are these kinds of threats coming from an authoritarian Democrat surprising? This is what they do, and this is what their supporters want them to do.
Geez...to think...this is what Massachusetts gives to the nation.
Markey is just another lifer Senator heaped on us from the State of Massachusetts, who does nothing if not destroy the strengths of this country. Like so many on the Left, he deliberately misuses words to change their actual meaning, and thus give them new meaning to intensify his power (or the State's power). In this case, taking the phrase 'user safety' and making it their own. Making it so it has nothing at all to do with user safety, but has everything to do with Democratic control of social media.
The Democrats, for a few years now, have enjoyed ownership of both our language and the media with which to amplify the language, without pushback. Suddenly, they've lost control of one thing. One solid, but small thing in comparison to the entirety of the media they control. And they are panicking about letting loose the language, letting other ideas spill into the common areas of life. It gets harder to control the people when they are allowed to have other thoughts.
Edward Markey is a United States Senator, and this is what he stands for, and how he uses his position. The other Senator from that state is Elizabeth Warren, who frankly, is an even worse abuser of language and power. It could be argued that in our beginning as a country, Massachusetts was the seed place of our ideas of freedom. At the very least, the fighter at the front of those ideas. It has long ago left those ideas behind, as represented by who they send to Congress today.
This is what Patterico voted for.
"Who gets reelected with over 60 percent of the vote. Stupid and thuggish is very popular."
Intelligent people have long, long since abandoned Massachusetts. It is impossible to live with these people. Markey (who doesn't even live in Massachusetts either, by the way) is exactly the type of person that stays in Massachusetts.

Ed Markey Listens to Rap Music for the First Time
Do I pat the black people on the head for their amazing rhythm and courage?
Or do I yell at them for their misogyny?
And the N word! Oh my goodness. Multiple N words. Trigger, trigger, trigger, and trigger.
Holy shit, what if he's white?
How do we know if he's Black?
He could sound Black and be white. And even if he's black, he might not be Black black. Might be Kanye black. We ought to call a subcommittee.
Hey, hey, hey. I got it, I got it. What if we replace the N word with the word "trigger" in the song? Holy fuck I'm a genius. We keep the tempo of the song -- we all love the tempo, nothing wrong with the rhythm, you just keep rhyming and griming, kind of hard to rhyme on the fly, I can't dunk either, you keep doing what you do, rappers. All we're doing is a little word substitution. To protect the kids, you know? Cause it's expensive trying to authenticate your shit. I mean, look at that Wollumbin nightmare. Damn authentic people with their damn authentic misogyny. What the fuck rhymes with Wollumbin? Nothing. But trigger definitely rhymes with the N word, if I said the N word. And it's a helpful lesson for everyone! Take it from me, Ed Markey. Let's get that subcommittee rolling on this. We're meeting up on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. And you Republicans better meet my deadline! Or else!
Free speech IS dangerous... to people like Markey with dreams of power.
Safetyism is the most pernicious tyranny, always exercised to “protect” us from threats largely encouraged by the same people who purport to protect us.
Elon should charge users 8 bucks a pop to tell Senators to go fuck themselves. 💵💰💹
It was once said of Ed Markey (by Billy Bulger, I believe):
"To a battle of wits......he comes unarmed"
It's all about control with these Progs.
He should be governor so the voters who continue to elect him would see him up close and personal.
Hey Mahkey, we got a town named after ya - it’s called Mahblehead.
"It could be argued that in our beginning as a country, Massachusetts was the seed place of our ideas of freedom. At the very least, the fighter at the front of those ideas."
Since the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were both written by Virginians, Jefferson and Madison respectively, the Commonwealth thinks its seed bed was pretty fertile.
Why must anyone simply respond to a Senator?
Besides “safety” the way the Left attacks Twitter is it tells advertisers that associating with Twitter Is bad for their brand.
Being in favor of freedom is bad; according to the Left.
We need a new Committee on Public Safety and we can put Markey in charge.
Does Markey even know what’s in the Constitution?
Markey is a liberal, which means he is a communist.
Communists have never done anything to improve the state of man.
'And the N word! Oh my goodness. Multiple N words. Trigger, trigger, trigger, and trigger.'
So he can't spell either?

Ah, socialism of the German pattern, the Zwangswirtschaft [compulsory economy] of the Nazis.
===============
"The Dictatorial, Anti-Democratic and Socialist Character of Interventionism
"Many advocates of interventionism are bewildered when one tells them that in recommending interventionism they themselves are fostering anti-democratic and dictatorial tendencies and the establishment of totalitarian socialism. They protest that they are sincere believers and opposed to tyranny and socialism. What they aim at is only the improvement of the conditions of the poor. They say that they are driven by considerations of social justice, and favour a fairer distribution of income precisely because they are intent upon preserving capitalism and its political corollary or superstructure, viz., democratic government.
"What these people fail to realize is that the various measures they suggest are not capable of bringing about the beneficial results aimed at. On the contrary they produce a state of affairs which from the point of view of their advocates is worse than the previous state which they were designed to alter. If the government, faced with this failure of its first intervention, is not prepared to undo its interference with the market and to return to a free economy, it must add to its first measure more and more regulations and restrictions. Proceeding step by step on this way it finally reaches a point in which all economic freedom of individuals has disappeared. Then socialism of the German pattern, the Zwangswirtschaft of the Nazis, emerges."
von Mises, Ludwig (1947). Planned Chaos
Well, aside from boomers, seems the entire USA population is too stupid to personally decide for themselves what is dis-information, propaganda and unsafe gossip. Need govt assistance.
Nice to imagine MSM forced to report the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth or risk incarceration. Maybe Trump could start promising to make it mandatory if elected.
"user safety" hahahaha yes. We must not allow any disagreement with bedlamites and wokesters and those calling for white men to be executed. No sir. Cannot hurt their feelings. Cannot question trans surgery for pre-teens or the efficacy of masks or covid shots. Nope.
Why doesn't Markey just form a committee. He could call it "The Committee for Public Safety".
I love Markey's Orwellian Commie lingo. His "safety" means Censorship. Hey, he's not shutting up people he dislikes, he's protecting people for "Safety". After all, we can't let "Dangerous" people who disagree with Markey writing stuff on the internet.
Markey is a Democrat from Massachutes, so he can do or say anything and his Democrat robot base will re-elect him. I doubt any of them care about the 1st Admendment, just that he spreads the graft around and supports the Democrat Party.
While he can't shoot someone on 5th Avenue and get re-elected, he could leave a woman to drown after drunkenly driving off a bridge and stay in Congress.
Apparently the Senator wrote because he was pissed that someone set up a fake blue check Markey twitter account in the immediate wake of Musk's new $8 policy. And still passed when Musk revoked the policy, but did not tell him in a letter. Isn't this what members of Congress do for a living on both sides of the aisle?

Correct. Big brother will keep you safe. So, how many female voters, particularly single female voters, prefer freedom over "safety"?

#1 Steven Symms of Idaho
#2 Gordon Humphrey of New Hampshire
All of Spy Magazine is now available online for free at Google Books. I loved the magazine when it came out. Yes, it was political with a predictable political spin -- Symms and Humphrey were Republicans -- but politics wasn't their whole reason for being. Trump was one of their favorite targets (the others were Abe Rosenthal and Bret Easton Ellis), but not for political reasons. You could sense (or should sense) that the Spy crew were a bit clownish themselves, going over the top with their satire. Their attacks didn't seem as real or as venomous as attacks are now, and you could suppose that the people they ridiculed might not always deserve it. Ed Markey probably did.
Spy and David Letterman were two big reasons critics viewed the Nineties as an Age of Irony that they thought would come to an end with 9/11. That didn't happen. The head of Raytheon was Charles Francis Adams IV, of the famous Boston family. His successor, Thomas L. Phillips, was the father of Spy's founding publisher. I saw a little sic transit gloria mundi for the American empire in that, and Lloyd Austin isn't great evidence to the contrary.
Oooh, a 2-minute hate we can all support!

Not to say it isn't thuggish, but senators writing letters to private businesses and demanding they respond is pretty normal -- he's on the Subcommittee on Communication, Media, and Broadband and the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, so him sending letters to Twitter demanding information doesn't strike me as at all out of the ordinary. Even if it's not a congressional subpoena, companies often cooperate with these sorts of informal requests, even if dumb, just to avoid provoking legislative retaliation. I mean, that's the thuggishness, I suppose, but that thuggishness is just the background thuggishness implicit in any act or request by any government official. Where they have discretion -- and legislators, unlike executive branch bureaucrats, really ought to have wide discretion -- that's just an inevitable side effect.

Great check. I used to read Spy regularly back in the day. Didn't understand half of it because of the heavy NYC orientation. Though I had only a vague idea of who he was at the time, the two things that have stuck with me were the references to the "short-fingered vulgarian" trump and the cover with the cute young thing (maybe wearing a Santa Claus hat) holding a little dog, with the caption "Buy this magazine or we'll kill this dog."
I'm a pack rat and should still have all those copies, but they dropped out at some point.

Markey's only been a senator for less than 10 years. But, even though it was "invented" here, gerrymandering hasn't been much of an issue in Mass. for a long time. Used to be a pubbie or two out west. And occasional rumblings about one from the south shore/cape, when there's not some idiot Kennedy running. But nothing comes of it.

==================================================================================
But Markey does rob people! He is a US Senator who believes he knows better on what to do with our money than we do. Hell, he voted to hire all those new IRS agents to shake down taxpayers just trying to get by. So, a mask is appropriate in Markey’s case…
Some crossed wires in the 2020 senatorial primary. Young terror AOC was all-in for boring old White guy Ed Markey who was pushing her Green New Deal. Antediluvian Pelosi talked up young Congressman Joseph Kennedy the nth. No fan of Kennedys, I did hope young JPK would bump off the pretentious old fart. He didn't. Kennedy led early on in the polls but gave people no reason to vote for him other than his being a Kennedy. It's understandable that the tail end of the dynasty would be incompetent, but Markey was hardly more competent himself.
This man is an enemy of humanity. I worked very hard to teach my children that hatred for people like him was important and praiseworthy.
My insult suggestion would be Senator Malarky.
Every time Joe Biden says Malarky, Markey has a spasm.
Markey (panic whisper): "Why does that fucker from Delaware want to get rid of me?"
Aide (whisper): "I think he said 'malarky."
Markey (panic whisper): "He said my name. I heard it. When people say my name, I hear my name."
Aide (whisper): "He hates malarky."
Markey (panic whisper): "I don't give a shit if he hates malarky, why does he hate me? I'll destroy him."
Aide (whisper): "Malarky sounds like Markey but he didn't say Senator so it's probably not you."
Markey (panic whisper): "You think it's another Malarky? Like my cousin? Oh shit, do you think he knows my cousin?"
Aide (whisper): "I think he said Malarky, not Markey."
Markey (panic whisper): "Well, he's full of shit, whatever he said. My state is way bigger than his state."
Aide (whisper): "Yes sir."
Markey (whisper): "Delaware can suck it."
Aide (whisper): "Okay."
I'll take the whims of clever billionaires over the whims preening political hacks every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
"And note that word "safety." That's the newfangled alternative to freedom."
It's always been used as an alternative to freedom.
Markey has always been a fuck wad.
I can't stand Musk but...
LOL! Typical Patterico conman line. Pretending to be some sort of "conservative" or "Moderate" while ALWAYS helping the Liberal/left win.
He lost out on a lot of "reasonable conservative" -gigs, even the Dispatch and Bulwark didn't want him. And that's a low bar. Maybe he didn't know the right people. But keep on punching guy. That combo of fake conservativism, classical liberalism, and barely hidden support for the Progressive Establishment will get you a job somewhere!
Hell's he probably next in line for Red State job, after Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.
