I have given up on her for years but she does have a point. Trump could not take DeSantis path on Covid because of Kushner. It was all about the next election.

Yeah, because all the other Republicans have done such a bang up job. I am GLAD we have the Abraham Accords. I am GLAD Trump kept us from starting new wars. I am GLAD the Republicans are showing their cards. I know who NOT to listen to lecture us anymore. Shut up and go away Ann...nobody cares what you think.

An excerpt from the Wikipedia article about Gary Cohn:

Under the Trump administration, Cohn was cited by the press as a supporter of globalism, and was given nicknames such as "Globalist Gary" and "Carbon Tax Cohn". Along with Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, and Dina Powell, they were referred to by opponents as the "Wall Street-wing" of the Trump administration. He was stated as being at odds with the populist faction that was led by Steve Bannon, when Bannon was White House Chief Strategist.

Cohn led the Trump administration's efforts to pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. In a 2019 article in The Wall Street Journal, Cohn pointed to an increase of $6,000 in real disposable personal income per household, as well as the creation of seven million jobs, as evidence of the success of tax reform.

Cohn reportedly considered resigning from the National Economic Council after the 2017 Charlottesville rally and criticized the Trump administration's response to the rally, stating "I believe this administration can and must do better in consistently and unequivocally condemning," white supremacists.

In August 2020, Jim Sciutto published a book called The Madman Theory in which Cohn said in response to Donald Trump saying that there were very good people on both sides of the protests which included white supremacists, "Citizens standing up for equality and freedom can never be equated with white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the KKK."

On March 6, 2018, Cohn announced his intention to resign; the announcement followed Trump's proposal to impose import tariffs on steel and aluminum, and Trump's cancellation of a meeting with end-users of steel and aluminum that Cohn had arranged in an attempt to dissuade the president from the planned tariffs.

He was replaced by Larry Kudlow on April 2.

Bob Woodward's 2018 book, Fear: Trump in the White House relates two instances in which Cohn removed draft letters from President Trump's desk, so that the President would not see them. One of the letters would have canceled a key trade agreement with South Korea, and the other would have withdrawn the US unilaterally from the NAFTA trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.

The post is silly. Unfortunately, Coulter, like Trump, is past her "use by" date.

Paul Ryan was the impediment to Trump's effective use of Congress. Despite being surrounded by backstabbers his results argue that there was nothing wrong with his domestic or foreign policy.

The $2 billion claim is right out of the DNC playbook. Has anyone ever seen proof of this?

I can understand her anger, but the fact is that Trump wasn't handed the Senate and the House, the Senate and House Republicans were handed control of Congress. If you want to blame the lack of any action from that control, you have to blame the right people.

This attacking of Trump is actually deeply counter-productive- as much so as Trump's flailing about after Tuesday night. I think, if DeSantis runs, he will defeat Trump easily in the primaries, and the battle won't weaken DeSantis- the most brutal primary fight I have witnessed in my lifetime was the Democratic primary season of 2008, and Obama came out of that stronger than before it started. Fire hardens the fighter.

I do think the Republican base voters are ready to move on, and we need to let Trump come to realize this truth at the ballot box come Winter of next year. What you absolutely don't want is for Trump to run as a third party candidate in 2024, which becomes more and more likely given the present environment.

Here is my point- Trump isn't damaging the Republican Party right now. His attacks on DeSantis aren't damaging DeSantis. For everyone of you demanding Trump shut up and go away, you are doing exactly what the Democrats in the media want you to do. The best we can do for ourselves and Trump is probably to just ignore him for a while.

Personnel is policy. As with Wray at the FBI. Even with his managerial cluelessness, Trump still got a lot done. But apart from SCOTUS, none of it lasts, or was designed to last.

Anyone going after Trump right now is trying to help the democrats. You already went down this path in the 2012 Republican primary.

You are all bashing Trump and then you get mad when he fires back.

You need to look in the mirror. You are the people smearing a Republican.

You have been smearing republicans the whole time. You are the people that attacked the Tea Party. You are the people that cheered the IRS attacks on the Tea Party. You have been calling Republicans Un-electable. You are the ones that pull support from Republican candidates. You are the people that are attacking Tsibaka. You are the people that are supporting mail in voting.

Trump's admin did a lot, but also missed on a lot that could have been accomplished, even with the Democrats' opposition. He made mistakes due to his personality that ended up hurting the GOP and the country. And, right or wrong, too many people will either not vote for him, or will vote against him, because of who he is. For the good of the country, he needs to accept that, and his supporters need to accept that, or the Repubs will lose in 2024.

And, yes, Trump chose poorly on personnel- I wrote, I think, on Althouse's blog the day of the inauguration that his first executive order at 12:01 p.m. January 20, 2017 should be that every single Obama political appointee still on the job is immediately fired and escorted out of the office. And Trump compounded the problem by appointed people like Jeff Sessions and Christopher Wray among others along the way. Lots of poor choices.

Bob Boyd said...

Trump's personnel decisions were his weakest area.

Look what they did to some of his good picks, though, like Mike Flynn.
Also, in the swamp, it's very difficult to know who you can trust.

It's tough to attract good people when they know they're going to have to endure merciless character assassination from not only the media and the opposition, but from their own party. When they know their families and even their children will be socially ostracized and labeled for life.

And if they are effective at their job, even worse will follow, perhaps including becoming a target of a federal criminal investigation designed to ruin them financially. When they know their families and even their children will be socially ostracized and labeled for life. When they will be blacklisted for future professional opportunities after they leave office.
And in the end, it will be thankless.

Joe Smith said...

'Personnel is policy.'

Depends.

If you can keep your employees in line then it's your policy being implemented, as it should be.

If you put in weak people like Sessions who won't do their job or your bidding, then everything goes off the rails.

The key is knowing whether someone will run through a brick wall for you, or whether they're more interested in getting invited to the right parties or writing a book...

With this and the MSNBC article, the theme of the day may be the hidden similarities between people who think they are deadly enemies. MSNBC bashes Trump for being a vulgarian and his supporters for being yokels, while they are vulgarians and yokels themselves. Bardella thinks his political views allow him to make comments that he would attack other men for making. He unwittingly outs himself as another porn-obsessed misogynist. Coulter hates Trump, but they're both egotists and unguided missiles, much more alike than different.

Coulter gets some satisfaction by going over the top, by losing control. So does Trump. It wasn't enough to come up with a reasoned criticism of environmental fanaticism. Ann had to say, "God said, ‘Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It’s yours.’" It was a joke, she said later, but like Trump's many jokes, people take it literally. Coulter and Trump are both comic exaggerators whose imagination and lack of impulse control gets them in trouble.

Coulter thought it was all going to be easy for Trump. She blames him for not quickly solving problems that have been around for years. Ann Coulter was bound to turn on just about any president she supported, and to do so in a spectacular way. Perhaps she also recognizes that writers can only take praise so far, while revilement is a bottomless well.

Trump's personnel choices, good or bad, were constrained by the DC Blob's dislike of the foreign object and need to eject it.

Career Blobists don't spring to attention for anyone, especially not that guy, and most of them are D's anyway and spend most of their time advancing D goals.

Barr proved to be a Blobist ultimately, by making it his priority to minimize the damage to the Blob rather than dig deeper. As a made man with the CIA-FBI he fulfilled his real mission while appearing to have corrected an injustice.

If Trump is still at large in '24 the only thing different will be his thirst for personal vengeance and the Blob's intensified hatred.

Not a promising scenario.

Kushner created a company to handle 2b Saudi money that was earmarked for investment in Israeli business. Happened after the AA and there was some dissension as to who should handle the money, but the Prince insisted Kushner should. Kushner's firm has gotten an additional 1b from other ME countries not signed onto the AA. AA countries don't need the intermediary and are making direct investments in the "Silicon Valley of the MidEast". I have no follow up on how well the fund is performing it's stated function. The only thing surprising is that you would think a one-sided self-reported "poll" (LOL) at Powerlineblog is somehow dispositive of anything, especially the base of the republican party.

Something tells me powerline readers, of which I am one, is not exactly representative of what a future working class/middle class and very diverse populist majority party base thinks/believes/wants.

But then again, I get it. The GOPe-ers don't want anything to do with those icky and deplorable working class/middle class lowbrow types. You can probably smell them when they shop at Walmart....not that you might ever deign to walk into one.

McConnell is still quite proud of his role in using govt to attack and destroy the tea party movement and now this entire charade around Trump is designed to completely kill off the MAGA movement....all so "respectable" republicans can once again enjoy themselves at upper crust swanky cocktail parties without having to answer any difficult questions from their societal "betters" while reaching for the cocktail sauce for their jumbo shrimp.

Yes indeed, its time to get "back to business" and further empowering the DOJ/FBI/National Security State to teach those deplorables some lessons and let us not ever forget the legislative priorities of the incoming, and seemingly permanent, "republican" minority:
- Funding Ukraine
- Shipping more jobs/industries overseas and pocketing the kickbacks
- Increasing immigration (H1B's and illegals) so that the Chamber of Commerce will once again allow republican leaders to worship at their feet....as the CoC funds more democraticals
- Ensuring Big Tech and the Big Tech/Govt alliance remains untouchable (McCarthy's specialty)
- Tax cuts for large corporations
- And so much more!!

We are indeed fortunate, nay blessed, to have such a GOPe leadership.

A lot of people seem to approach presidential politics as though the first question is along the lines of "who do I like most?" or "whose policies come closest to mirroring my own?"

I think the first question (but not the only question) should be "is there a reasonable likelihood that this individual can win more than 270 electoral votes?"

However much you love love love Mr. Trump, the fact that last week's election results demonstrate his unelectability should cause you to look elsewhere for 2024. So he got Trump to run and get elected president, and then Kushner did the Abraham Accords. Not too shabby, if you ask me.

That the Saudis thought his investment firm worth a fling of a couple billion isn't surprising. They Saudis are trying to become financially diversified, and a billion here, a billion there, is happening repeatedly as they seek security and growth for their riches if or when the oil money stops flowing. Eventually the Saudis will want to buy stuff from Israel themselves. Who better to have as a supporter than the guy who got several countries to start doing business with the Jewish state?

What exactly was wrong with what I wrote? That Congress didn't have to have Trump tell it what to do- all it had to do was to set policies by passing the bills the voters demanded in electing them and Trump to office in 2016. Sure, they needed Trump's signature on those bills, but here is the thing- they never passed anything after the tax cuts. They sat on their fucking hands for 2 years, and then got crushed at the ballot box for doing so. Two fucking years doing nothing to pass the legislation we the voters expected them to pass.

You watch what happens if the Democrats get to 51 Senators in the new Congress and keep the House after counting votes for the next 3 weeks in California. The Democrat will pass the bills their supporters wanted passed, and they won't need Joe Manchin any longer.

Blame Trump for the correct things that he had control of- he didn't have control of the legislative agenda from January 2017 until January 2019. The only thing we got out of control of Congress was the three SCOTUS justices- a success that will now be undone as the Democrats pack the court and the Senate.

Or is she, like Lizzie Cheney, upset at the end of the US involvement in forever wars?

Trump’s negatives are obvious and I cannot support him in 2024. But he realized two things. First, that while the Chamber of Commerce and the country club Republicans demanded an outsized role in setting party policy, they tended to give their financial support to the Democrats. Second, that working class men and women felt disenfranchised in a Democrat Psrty that cared more about college kids and corporate bosses than about them. Trump often said what was necessary to present a united front in the heat of a campaign. This is not a revelation, nor should it surprise anyone.

And I dont have any problem with anyone saying they prefer a new standard bearer going forward. Thats what primaries are all about.

But right now there is no one on the GOP side, including DeSantis, that has indicated they are going to adopt a stronger economic nationalist position and really take on the ChiComs and the completely corrupted national security state and Davos crew outlook.

In fact, DeSantis' biggest backers are the most vocal proponents of those very things and DeSabtis said nothing about the Mar A Lago raid...and just wait until Garland/Biden/McConnell (yes, McConnell will give the greenlight) puts Trump in handcuffs and drags him before a Soviet DC "jury". DeSantis wont say boo about that either I'll wager.

Everyone is saying DeSantis will give us Trumpian policies without Trumpian drawbacks/weaknesses/downside.

Which Republicans most underperformed?

ANSWER: Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania and Herschel Walker in Georgia -- two nominees hand-picked by Trump.

The first horror of a long Tuesday night came soon after the polls closed in Pennsylvania, with the GOP gubernatorial nominee, Mastriano, getting clobbered. Some of the tipoffs that Mastriano might not have been the strongest candidate for the GOP were:

-- A week before the primary, he spoke at a QAnon rally, featuring a film claiming 9/11 was an inside job and that John F. Kennedy Jr. was assassinated because he “knew too much.”

-- He called abortion the “No. 1 issue” and promised to ban all abortions with no exceptions even for rape, incest or the life of the mother. He also said women who violated the ban should be charged with murder."

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

More reasons why Trump is a loser:

"In Georgia, we got both types of Trump’s electoral wizardry: the bad and the horrendously bad. First, after narrowly losing the state in 2020, he went on a jihad against the Republican governor, Brian Kemp, and secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger.

Still enraged with Kemp, he recruited and funded a primary opponent to the popular governor. Luckily, Trump’s designated candidate, former Sen. David Perdue, was available, having lost his own reelection to the Senate entirely because of Trump.

In case you’ve forgotten, Trump held rallies in Georgia leading up to the runoff between Perdue and Raphael Warnock, denouncing the popular Republican governor and telling people not to bother voting because the system was rigged. Warnock won and Perdue was unemployed, so Trump got him to run against Kemp.

Trump so hated Kemp that he finally dipped into his $100 million political PAC to fund something other than his own businesses and rallies, giving a half-million dollars to Perdue.

Primary election results: Kemp trounced Perdue 74% to 22%."

That is some serious F-uped ego trip. Trump will flush US down the crapper for his own ego.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

more on the mighty super-smartz Captain Trumpie!

"On Tuesday night, Kemp and Raffensperger each won their elections by about 8 points. It’s reasonable to conclude that any other Republican would have beaten Warnock by the same healthy margin. Same state, same election, same political party.

Instead, the Georgia Senate race ended up being the most expensive in the country -- money that Republicans really could have used in other races. Walker, as of this writing, appears to be headed for a runoff. Trump is on track to screw that one up too, by announcing that he’s running for president, so Trump can make it all about himself again."

When the Republican governor of the second-largest state wins his reelection by 55% and the Republican governor of the third-largest state wins by 60%, the GOP doesn’t need another one of its moronic “autopsies” of the party, promising to be just like the Democrats. The only thing we need now is an autopsy of Trump.

The GOP teamed up with the Democrats and media to destroy Trump. Now they are blaming him for THEIR failures. The mid-term results are not the fault of Trump. This is all on the GOP leadership. The voters made their selections in the primaries. It matters not whether Trump endorsed them or not. It was then the GOP's responsibility to support those candidates. They refused to do so and in some cases actively worked against them. They joined with the media in vilifying Herschel Walker and only now, when it's too late, are they giving him any support. There is no way he will win the run-off. Fulton County, Georgia cheat-machine will not allow it.

McConnell poured money into Alaska to support Murkowski instead of putting money into the Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Colorado, New York, or Pennsylvania senate races. His actions in the mid-terms may have just destroyed the GOP's chances for the Presidency in 2024. Conservatives are tired of voting and then having the GOP tell us "We didn't like your selection, so we will not put any support in that race". Conservatives are tired of watching the democrats use fraud in counting the ballots while the GOP leadership sits back and watches. (And yes, they was just as much fraud in this election as there was in 2020).

No. They can't blame Trump for their failures.

Birx even admitted she lied to Trump and the people about the vaccine.

And of course, the biggest thing was the Obama administration, DOJ, FBI, and CIA working with Hillary Clinton to damage his presidency with the Russian collusion criminal conspiracy. All without repercussion.

After working to destroy Trump, the media, Democrats, and republicans are blaming him for the GOP's failures. It's much like a spouse-abuser blaming their victim for running into their fist.

If you want to support members of Congress who vote to impeach - on the most dubious of charges - a past-President of his/her own party? That's on you.

Not me. Not Trump.
Not on anybody who's paying attention to what's going on.

Fat tub of Goo probably isn't your best starting point.

Two? Don't base your arguments against Trump on Washington state politics unless you've actually worked 'em.

Well, she has more than 2 million followers on Twitter, so there must be lot of people who care what she thinks. How many followers do you have, wendybar?

None, because I don't need followers and am not on any social media. I don't even have a cell phone. But I have heard and seen Ann Coulter dump on every single person she has ever endorsed, so there is that. If people are dumb enough to follow her, that's on THEM.

Bender: "So, now that the Senate is lost, and 218 GOP seats in the House are looking increasingly elusive, are you all looking forward to Tuesday when Trump announces that he's running for president again? Are you excited to hear him say, "Follow me to victory! Are you tired of winning yet?"'

Show me the viable republican candidate who supports the economic nationalist policies that Trump fought for as President including direct economic engagement against the ChiComs, is willing to truly take on the entrenched establishment/deep state, calls out Biden/Garland for their weaponization of the entire federal bureaucracy against political opponents, calls for reshoring US businesses that are critical to our national security, energy independence, changing our military force focus to a potential ChiCom engagement instead of the Middle East/Eastern Europe Forever Grift Wars, complete the wall and get after the cartels and ChiCom fentanol you get the drift.

Go ahead Bender. Name them...and yes, I'm including DeSantis in my "hasn't done it at all" column.

You could almost say that the "more" DeSantis DOESN'T talk about those things, the more DeSantis emphasizes the culture war issues....which his funders don't much care for anyway.

But then again, you appear to be a defender of and supporter of the McFailures/Romney-clones running the party who in the last 2 years alone gave the republicans the following (democratical) wins:
- A Gun control bill(!)
- Biden's "infrastructure" bill
- Classic republican DC-beltway "failure theatre" in caving to Biden/Schumer on reconciliation (but you and I both know it wasn't a failure, it was what McConnell wanted)
- Sending Lindsay Graham out in September, gee that was curious timing wasn't it, to call for Federal legislation on abortion....right after the conservatives won a generational war to get the issue returned to the states (do you really think this wasn't done at the behest of McConnell to have the democraticals another weapon to purposely lose the Senate?)
- Funding democraticals (don't tell me Murkowski isn't one) with GOP money to attack republicans

I could go on, but you get the drift. Yes indeed, if only we get rid of Trump we can have "Trump's policies without the Trump problems!!".

Except no one out there is pushing for "Trump policies without the Trump problems". Including DeSantis who is being heavily funded and supported by ALL the folks who opposed Trump economic polices.

You want me to consider an alternative to Trump that can better fight for those policies I support?

Show me one.

Trump did what I thought he was going to do early on. While he did some good things around the margins - he ultimately aided the left's power to take more power.

If you cannot grasp that people hate this man - and why? I cannot help you. Enjoy the suck.

I notice Drago that in all of that long screed, you don't answer "yes."

By the way, about this Romney thing, I looked back at posts in 2011-12. Didn't see any comments from Achilles and you didn't jump out either. But if you look, you'll see Bender was repeatedly and constantly and heatedly urging people not to nominate Romney (so was Crack, but only a few others), that he was (and is) a complete weasel, that he was a disaster and a drag on the party -- and I was attacked for it. With arguments very similar to yours here now, that Romney was great and a leader, etc. "He's a successful businessman! He saved the Olympics!"

Save us your whining now.

Bender: "I notice Drago that in all of that long screed, you don't answer "yes.""

I am neutral on every potential candidate for 2024. If Trump declares then I know what he represents and I'll compare and contrast him against any others that declare as well.

What I know right now is what I wrote in my "long screed".

I noticed in your short screed that you failed to answer my question: which other candidate represents someone who will fight for those policies that Trump has pushed and can give us those without the Trump downside?

So go ahead: name someone and then tell my why you trust them to "deliver Trump policies without the Trump baggage".

Since no one has done that yet despite much urging, I'm going to assume there isn't anyone worth mentioning.

I certainly grasp that you hate Trump.

But that doesn't convince me that any other candidate can defeat Trump in a 2024 primary, and you've certainly provided no evidence on that front either. But then, you spend most of your time NOT knowing things.

It's kind of like your "super power".

Drago said...

Bender: "Save us your whining now."

No, I don't believe I will cease saying negative things about Romney now. Despite how much you might like for me to do just that.

After 7 years of russia collusion and about 30 other debunked democratical/deep stater lies, I'm going to need to see some documentary proof of your latest smear.

Naturally, your link to the NYT, the biggest pusher of debunked hoaxes for decades all the way back to Walter Duranty and his Soviet-Suckiness, forgive me if I don't take your accusations at face value.

Now, what we DO have is the documentary evidence of the complete weaponization of the federal bureaucracy against political enemies by the New Soviet Democraticals going all the way back to the Tea Party being targeted by the IRS up to today with Team Dem going after parents at school boards.

Nice try though.

It's a real sign of insecurity and general weakness that you keep using the royal "we" in a vain attempt to add some degree of legitimacy to your observations.

Have you always done that in life? Have you never ventured out on your own?

A good time to start would be right now.

Oddly enough, I am fond of a politician who fought for most of the things I believe in.

Which explains your support for the McFailures of the republican party. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
