Why, exactly, is Caitlyn Jenner attacking Dylan Mulvaney?

There's this:

I got there via "Caitlyn Jenner Piles on Trans TikToker, Calls Body Positive Video ‘Absurdity’/The anti-trans attacks against Mulvaney come days after her interview with President Biden surrounding transgender rights and policies" (Rolling Stone).

I've been avoiding the Mulvaney-at-the-White-House story. Not sure why. I'd already seen many Dylan Mulvaney videos on TikTok, including the one that reenacts the opening sequence of the old TV show "That Girl" (and the subsequent version of that where Marlo Thomas looks on and is (or acts) choked up about the tribute to her long-ago perky, girly youth).

But going to the White House... celebrities are always traipsing through the White House. I'm not jumping at every photo op, especially where it's one that right-wingers are squealing with mock horror about. But if Caitlyn Jenner is going to pile on, I'm afraid I need to stir into action.

So let's see how Rolling Stone explains the intra-trans discord:

Throughout her tenure, Blackburn has... been extremely vocal about her beliefs that trans women are not real women — attacking trans athletes like University of Pennsylvania athlete swimmer Lia Thomas for allegedly having an unfair advantage against her fellow competitors. But that doesn’t seem to bother the former athlete, as Jenner has continually reaffirmed that her identity as a trans woman doesn’t change her Republican-leaning belief system....
That's not very helpful.

Anyway, here's Mulvaney gushing about visiting the President:
@dylanmulvaney Day 222- talking to the president at the White House with @nowthis (interview goes live on Sunday Night!) #trans #whitehouse #nowthisnews ♬ Presidential Honors (Entrance of The President) - USMMA Band

Sorry professor, I wasn’t interested in this story either (another sideshow really), but Bruce/Caitlin Jenner commenting on it certainly isn’t going to change my disinterest.

Then again I don’t run a blog, so maybe this is a blogging necessity. IDK

Me? Nah. Still not interested in the circus sideshow.

Sure, celebrity men pretending to be girls traipse through all the time. Nothing special to see here.

"right-wingers are squealing with mock horror about."

Those right wingers, always squealing in mock horror. Deplorable, I tell you.

"Lia Thomas for allegedly having an unfair advantage against her fellow competitors."

Allegedly. No evidence of that though. Any allegations are mock horror, really.

I had no idea who Dylan Mulvaney was, so I watched enough of the video to understand the situation. Not my cup of tea as issues go, but I don't see what's wrong with it, at least from Caitlyn Jenner's perspective.

Does she take the position that a man isn't a woman until after the snip? That's defensible, but as line drawing goes, it seems like the wrong thing to fight over.

Iman said...

What a freak this Mulvaney is. It has to be a parody, his act is a demeaning put down of women per my wife, and I agree.

tim maguire said...

If I could edit my comment, I'd add that I don't buy the underlying story here--that people were staring at her because she has a bump instead of a camel toe. Bullshit. Nobody noticed. Nobody was staring. She noticed and thought she'd get a viral video out of it.

"Why, exactly, is Caitlyn Jenner attacking Dylan Mulvaney?"

Perhaps because Dylan Mulvaney is doing a bang-up job of highlighting just how ridiculous the whole trans thing has become. Sort of like how flamboyant gay men flouncing around in drag while reading hard-core illustrated queer propaganda to elementary school kids must (I assume) make conventional gay men uncomfortable.

(Or at least I hope it does.)

If we can't get past question #1 then today's woke left are themselves mentally ill.

Lou Reed, of "Walk on the Wild Side" and the Velvet Underground in the 1960s and 1970s, was an edgy and interesting left wing icon because he truly wasn't right in the head. He knew it. Everyone else knew it. He was certainly not treated well back in the day (per his homosexuality), but he was indeed not right in the head. Some people today are truly not right in the head. Who, exactly?

Why make disfiguring yourself trendy?? Wait until you are old enough to figure out who you are. I have no problem with a Caitlin Jenner. She is old enough to make a forever decision like that. I haven't followed closely but I think Jenner has held to a belief that 'trans' is a unique gender (or maybe genders ) which is in conflict with the usual 'transwomen are real women' formulation, thus the support for excluding trans from biologically-based divisions.

The New Soviet Democraticals have provided explicit answers to both of those questions and those answers are:

This is not complicated.

It's truly sickening that with everything happening in our country and throughout the world that this is how the President of the United States spends his time - being interviewed by a mentally ill cross-dresser.

Millions of Americans are going hungry because they can no longer afford to purchase food.

Millions of Americans are going broke because they can no longer afford the gasoline they need to get to work at jobs paying $7.75 an hour when inflation is approaching 10%.

We are on the brink of an actual nuclear war so Mr. Ten Percent For The Big Guy and his drug-addled son can skim off the top of Ukraine aid money that he's borrowing and leaving us with the bill.

And this is how he spends his time ... chatting it up with a garden-variety pervert.

Our society has lost its mind. We promote mental illness as normal. The victims are the Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2010) and Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2022) children.

Sick part is the biggest promoters of this madness are the public schools and the teachers unions. Let's not forget woke school boards. Kudos to the body mutilating surgical departments at Children's hospitals and The University of Wisconsin. All of this is disguised as some sort of inclusive altruism. It's actually madness.

Math and reading scores plummet. It was the Teachers Unions that promoted school closures. They've done the damage.

The three R's are going to shit, but a fourth grade boy can check out a book in his public school library on how to give another boy a blow job. Our educators have now created a system of negative return.

Joe Biden and the Democrats love it all.

Could it be because Caitlyn Jenner actually took some real chances by coming out as trans when & how she did? As opposed to Dylan "Barbie Pockets" Mulvaney, with their Menstrual Show mockery of "Girlhood" that includes prancing around like a dumb-bunny movie blonde of the 50s and tampon fetishizing. It's a schtick for Mulvaney and everyone with a brain knows it - which explains why Biden would give this person an audience. It's the difference between being a serious advocate trying to do what's best for everyone and a grasping TikTok fame whore who creates more animosity towards trans people than good. I am really well and truly sick of this Dylan Mulvaney, who has become unavoidably ubiquitous suddenly. The putrid cutesiness of "Girlhood" is just good old fashioned misogyny, wrapped up in bicycle pants and a bow. Uncle Miltie was less retrograde.

My take is that none of this is aimed at anyone who might be opposed to it. The people targeted are in need of a lot of reassurance, because they know this is going badly. There's a degree of "throwing your body on the gears" going on here that doesn't register at all with this POTUS, he's just doing what his people tell him will work.

That this will galvanize those who react instinctively and negatively isn't really in the mix. Does it indicate the degree to which these folks are in the bubble? No doubt. I sincerely hope this doesn't end badly for this young man. It will be hard when he's unable to sustain the illusion any more. The hunger for attention is strong, and the unwise will pay a heavy price. I'm not going to say he has it coming.

Steve Sailer (I know, a very disreputable guy) has the theory that these adult, alpha or power M->F transsexuals are a very different sort from the young, confused, less dominant beta M->F transwomen. Having a vagina is an expression of strength and dominance for them and they don't have much use for those in whom it can be seen as an expression of weakness and submissiveness. I don't know what Admiral Levine thinks about Dylan Mulvaney, but it looks like there's a similar dynamic in gay -- and indeed in straight -- circles.

"Because Dylan is making a mockery of what it is to be a woman."

Mulvaney is a successful entertainer. Care to guess the intent of the artist? It's not clear.

But mocking women is one of the things that entertainers do. Some of them do it by adopting the style and mannerisms of women. I remember, years ago Monty Python, Flip Wilson, Johnny Carson. I don't remember when Milton Berle did it but I've seen the video.

Women aren't sacrosanct, much as we love to rein you in with our foot stamping and "That's not funny."

You say "what it is to be a woman," but what is it? Sashaying? Crying? Being super-sweet and cheerful? It only reads as "woman" because there are some attributes that people associate with women. The solution is not to squelch entertainers but for us women to have more individualism and variety. It's not easy. I remember when "That Girl" was on TV and we young girls found ourselves talking like Marlo Thomas. Marlo Thomas or Elizabeth Montgomery. It was contagious. We ought to fight the contagion and be our true selves... not go after transwomen and others who take on a female stereotype.

Joe Smith said...

'Mulvaney is a successful entertainer. Care to guess the intent of the artist? It's not clear.'

The intent is clicks and $$, and at that she* is enormously successful.

I don't care what her intent is...it's demeaning and still you take it because you don't want to offend.

If I smeared shoe polish on my face, put on a fright wig, and walked around saying 'Here come da judge' I would (rightfully) get my ass kicked and get banned from every single social media platform.

She is mocking women. She is not a woman. She will never be a woman.

Don't be a doormat.

*I am respectfully using 'she' because I know a person who is transitioning, and they are very serious and sober about it. I don't agree with the reasons why, but have repsect for them as a person.

Dylan isn't claiming to be a Woman.

Dylan is claiming to be a Girl.

Dylan is explicit about this distinction as well.

This is 100% about grooming future sexual victims for obvious sexual predators like Joe Biden.

I do not give a crap about what people want to identify as and I don't care who you want to marry. But what Dylan is doing is not OK and crosses a line. And adding in the alliance with an obvious creep and child molester like Joe Biden is just disgusting.

It is like they are trying to be obvious about their grooming and embarrass their supporters as much as possible.

Ann Althouse said...

"Did any woman pattern herself after 'Geraldine'?"

Don't mix up my points. You know what I'm talking about: There is a tradition of mocking women, and if you want to establish a principle that women are not to be mocked, you're going to have to argue against tradition, freedom, and fun. Good luck. I dare you to do it, but I know you won't because you don't want to. That's why you rush to change the subject to the biological attributes of the performers. Your urge to change the subject is presumptively a concession of my point: It's fine to mock women.

Original Mike said...

Beth B said...

"Your urge to change the subject is presumptively a concession of my point: It's fine to mock women."

But hasn't the dynamic shifted somewhat? Would our society still accept a new Dame Edna who isn't one of RuPaul's drag queens? Is the Madea character looking more and more tired suddenly? Assuming we'd still allow politically incorrect John Cleese to lead a new Monty Python sketch, would it be embraced if he came out in a dress, screeching like a harridan today? Or would he run afoul of our cultural betters, not because he was mocking women but because the performance could be perceived as mocking trans-women or appropriating drag in general? How dare the old bigot?

It's all in who's doing it now, isn't it? Bravos all around to Eddie Izzard because he was first a transvestite comedian and now says he is trans. He can wear his breasts however he likes. But would Tim Allen or Kelsey Grammer get a pass if they did a revival of "Bosom Buddies" for network TV? Not likely.

I will not argue your point that our society thinks it's fine to mock women. I don't disagree. But I would add the caveat that it's now far more acceptable for some people to perform their little clown pageants about women than others. In fact, many refuse to even recognize it for the mockery it is but declare it to be noble. We've come a long way, baby...

Male entertainers in the past who played women - Milton Berle, Benny Hill, Monty Python, Flip Wilson, Dan Akyroyd as Julia Child, that Medea guy, the Portlandia guy, are all playing obvious character roles in stories. That’s very different than portraying yourself as a real woman/girl and acting like a stereotypical ditz. He is conveying the idea that women are superficial airheads. As a woman, I find him insulting. I admit that I am also a bit naturally disdainful of biological women who act like this. I often think, they, too, are putting on an act. If they aren’t, they’re to be pitied for whatever it is in their background that leads them to that kind of behavior.

Isn't there a difference between toleration and celebration? I think morbidly obese people have a hard time in life. There obesity, whatever its etiology, is a physical disability. The obese get mocked in high school and don't have a wealth of sexual partners to choose from. I don't know if their obesity is how God made them or if it comes from some kind of compulsion....I think the morbidly obese should be treated with dignity and tolerance. They have chosen a path that makes life difficult.... That said I don't think they should be invited to the White House solely to celebrate their obesity. The MSM should not be calling them brave pioneers who are exploring new worlds. If an obese person gets invited to the White House, they should not document themselves eating Boston Cream Pies and promising to gain another ten pounds prior to the visit.....I don't know any trans people, and it's not something that is any part of my make up. I do, however, know a fair number of fat people and every day in every way I am tempted to join their ranks. There's just so much good food available. Maybe the disapproval that fat people endure gives me the courage to pass by all those bakeries. Maybe a certain amount of disapproval might help the borderline to keep from undergoing some procedures that patently harmful.
