The photo is from yesterday's sunrise run. It was very windy today — too windy for it to be safe out around the trees.

There is a gale warning for Lake Michigan. We had a bit of snow overnight, seems too early for this weather.

It’s a beautiful path.

I was in Portland yesterday, and I watched the police block many of the hi-way bridges crossing the Willamette. It snarled traffic. The police were also manning barricades in the city.

The net gain from this endeavor????

A photo-op with a young woman at a Baskin-Robbins in downtown Portland. Biden enjoyed his ice cream, and yammered on about a great economy.

I think he was supposed to endorse Tina Kotex for Senator, but they never seemed to be in the same space at the same time.

I don't want to open or re-open any of the discussions that happened in other posts. But the comments on the post (something like) "Why was there such a month to month swing in independent women voters from Dem to Rep?" had a lot of thoughtful comments. Obviously there is not just one single explanation, so that makes it easier to suggest a new reason (or discuss an already proposed reason). But if you want to know why I read the althouse blog, go and read that comment stream. In the Washington Post (on almost any vaguely political article you would get only two comments: (1) Orange Man Bad (2) People who disagree with OMB are Russians. Those comments are so predictable, and so dull, that they are not worth reading. Thank you Althouse and Althouse readers/commenter.

Not easy to have a nice conversation about politics with leftist family members, so I don't. But I have imaginary ones. For example, the idea of a Trump cult of personality. Do they think I would vote for Trump if he and his ilk brought 40 year high inflation, explosion in crime, politicization of DOJ, severe govt over-reach, declining standards and schools, open border, supply disasters, incompetent for. policy, crashing markets, and greatest risk of nuclear war in 60 years. Trump is an asshole. I only voted for him because he managed a decent economy and foreign policy. I'm really, really angry politically - more so than at any time in my life - and I hope others are as well. Maybe there will be violence.

If you know based on a study of anthropology that all humans can trace their genealogy back to an "African Eve" (who was African), how are you supposed to know that although you are an "American of African descent" you are not an "African American"?

I didn't get the whole pumpkin spice thing. I tried a pumpkin spice yoghurt last year. It was awful. But I had a pumpkin spice Caesar salad today and it was pretty good. The secret was putting the pumpkin spice in the sprinkles, not in the dressing. Pumpkin spice, as I am sure everyone else in the country knew before me, contains no pumpkin. The spices do all the work and somehow the pumpkin gets all the credit (sort of like Caesar getting credit for the salad?).

The Mayor of Kingstown looks very good so far. Take a "fixer" drama like Ray Donovan and add a prison town setting, and you have something that feels a little more original than the usual cable product. The protagonist's mother, though, is a college history professor who seems to get her ideas from Howard Zinn, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and CRT. Her lecturettes fill out the series, but also make me wonder how this country is going to stay together if it hates itself so much.

If you want to know why our resident far left troll gadfly has recently cranked up the lies about Trump and russki money laundering its because gadfly is desperately attempting to deflect from this:

Leaked emails reveal Hunter Biden's real estate company received a $40 MILLION investment from Russian oligarch Yelena Baturina, the billionaire widow of corrupt Moscow mayor, who also paid president's son $3.5million consulting fee

That really does explain it all.

"'Trans Buddies' Now Assigned to Monitor Doctors for Transphobia" (Via Small Dead Animals blog)

"Vanderbilt’s Pediatric Transgender Clinic practices The Science© by providing “evidence-based, personalized gender-affirming care for transgender and gender-diverse children and adolescents” — a fancy, rambling way to say “transing children.” And now it’s upped its game by inserting “Trans Buddies” into the doctor’s office."

The Trans Buddy Program’s mission statement reads:

“The Trans Buddy Program’s goal is to increase access to care and improve healthcare outcomes for transgender people by providing emotional support to transgender patients during healthcare visits. We emphasize a patient-centered approach, with the goal of empowering the patient to make informed healthcare decisions. Trans Buddy recognizes the importance of intersectionality to our direct care practice, and we therefore aim to work with people of all identities with compassion and respect.”

Now I've heard it all, a compassionate mutilation.

Science without ethics. How much death and destruction has it caused?

Did you know what Rudolf Hess said? He said that Nazism was nothing but applied biology. Of course, much of American chattel slavery was grounded in the similar quasi-scientific idea that blacks were subhuman. Then we had a long discussion this morning about an entire medical profession seriously maintaining that pre-natal babies are not living human beings. And how many boys are now being destroyed with chemical and surgical castration, while girls are being made infertile with puberty suppressants and "top surgery," while the psyche of both effs them up so much that regardless of how much "gender affirming," they are highly suicidal.

Anyway, today's news brings a story that those beagle puppy mills that I thought were just greedy unethical breeders were actually producing puppies specifically for animal research. The kind of tortuous experiments that Fauci denied being involved with.

Next there is this --
"Boston University researchers claim to have developed new, more lethal COVID strain in lab"
https://www.fox5dc.com/news/boston-university-researchers-claim-to-have-developed-new-more-lethal-covid-strain-in-lab
Researchers at Boston University say they have developed a new COVID strain that has an 80% kill rate following a series of similar experiments first thought to have started the global pandemic that began in China....

It's stunning. Just stunning.

I know I don't always make the best use of my time. It's been a lifelong effort to do better; and at intervals I've noticed improvement, though never enough to rest from trying. Absolute perfection, that impossible spectre, is not the goal.

There's a true paradox I keep running up against, in that idleness is sometimes the best use of time. Couple that with the conundrum of self-deception, and the complications multiply fast.

I have done managerial work on complex jobs, responsible for keeping a great many hands on task and on time. Awareness of my own defalcations has probably gentled my approach to those working under me. This has been a good thing, I believe, irrespective of results; and in fact, wonder of wonders, the results were good too.

This in answer to Althouse's question of a couple days ago -- late not owing to procrastination, but because it led me to reflect.

In a Wall Street Journal review of more than 7,000 text messages between FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, the newspaper found “no evidence of a conspiracy against Mr. Trump.” The controversial texts that express a “distaste for Mr. Trump” only constitute a “fraction” of the conversations, the paper reported. Rather, the majority of the texts represent “day-to-day workplace trials” at the FBI and how they both struggled to navigate their personal and professional lives amid news-making events within and around the agency.

The only disgrace was the illegal publishing of selected Strzok/Page texts by the DOJ and the politicized firing of an extremely competent FBI agent. The Justice Department's inspector general has criticized Strzok and Page for creating the appearance of impropriety through the texts. But the DOJ IG report said it found no evidence of political bias.

So there is a lawsuit hanging out there against the DOJ that a Federal judge has refused to dismiss.

Because the US deserves the benefit of the doubt. You can't watch it in isolation either, watch it in context of the George Floyd (Sacred Martyr) riots that came later, and J6. Think about how the German Nazis used the Reichstag Fire to solidify power and control of the media and turned Germany's prosecuting arm into the Gestapo. Remember that, for all its problems, Germany was a liberal democracy when Hitler came along.

There was a two way roadblock here too, on a bridge right near the border, which never happens. Probably rumors that somebody was interfering with inbound illegal aliens by committing the hate crime of calling Border Patrol.

There have never been "daily" TikTok posts. I do TikTok posts when I happen to have saved some links. 2 things must happen: 1. I spent some time on TT, and 2. I saw at least a handful of videos I thought would be fun to share.

I have not formed an antagonism to TikTok based on statements about its being more risky to us than other apps/websites. It's solely about whether I'm looking at it and seeing things I want to share.

100 million Americans look at TikTok. It's the most popular app in the world. Technical problems about it are not going to be my marotte.

In reference to Virgil Hits comment last night in speaking to liberal family members, over the last year I have learned who to avoid and do so industriously. But, when forced to defend being a Republican, instead of mentioning Trump I ask one question - is there anyone in the US doing better than they were 4 years ago? Anyone safer , more prosperous or better educated? I stick to that question and make them answer it. They eventually mention COVID and I remind them that COVID ended over a year ago. If COVID was the cause, things should be getting better. They are getting worse. Why is that?

The conversation ends there without even mentioning Trump.

I've been reading PT Deutermann's books. They are novels, some about WWII and some about Washington DC. He spent 26 years in the Navy and his father was a vice-admiral in WWII. He is the one who introduced me to "Civil Serpents." He spent years in the Pentagon and should know whereof he speaks.
