"After spending the summer pounding Republican opponent Lee Zeldin as an anti-abortion, Donald Trump acolyte, Hochul is finding out..."

"... what other Democrats across the nation are also learning: Crime and the economy are crowding out abortion rights and the former president’s troubles as top of mind issues for voters. The New York governor is responding with a last-minute shift in approach just weeks ahead of the election by promoting her efforts to create jobs and fight crime. 'You deserve to feel safe,' Hochul says in a new TV ad released Saturday as part of a $1 million-plus buy in New York City. 'And as your governor, I won’t stop working until you do.'"

From "Hochul pivots in New York as GOP challenger rises on crime, economic message/New polls this week showed the race tightening — maybe to low single digits, uncomfortably close for Democrats after two decades of statewide dominance in New York" (Politico).

"You deserve to feel safe... I won’t stop working until you do" — Shouldn't it be "You deserve to be safe... I won’t stop working until you are"? I know politics is just about how we feel, but if you want people to feel safe, you've got to convince them that they are safe, and giving it away that you are just going after their feelings gives the brain a bit of a chance to notice that this is nothing but an effort at emotional manipulation.

Here's that last-minute-desperate shift ad:

I made a new tag for Lee Zeldin. I will disclose that that represents a bet that he will win. I don't like tag proliferation, but I also don't like needing to go back and add tags to old posts.

Not really, no. Certainly not for Dems. Feelings about Donald Trump and systemic racism and climate change swamp any rational thought.

"I know politics is just about how we feel"

Correct. Especially for people who don't hold any definite beliefs. People who vote mainly based on how they feel about a person.

"but if you want people to feel safe, you've got to convince them that they are safe."

In fact, most white and Asian people outside big Dem cities are pretty safe. But even people who are safe may want government to deliver law and order.

Democrat voters might just be smart enough to realize that federal legislation about abortion won't pass the recent Dobbs ruling. Congress had 50 years to legislate Roe, and didn't. The issue, used solely to energize the base of each party for 50 years at the federal level, now gets resolved by state legislatures.

Hochul is stuck being appraised on her actual job performance. She might still win, but it will be a Pyrrhic victory as far as the issue of abortion goes.

Slow learners. Youngkin showed the way 12 months ago. Democrats, living in their self constructed silo, never saw it.

Someone (maybe here) pointed out parents are showing a ?35% polling preference to Republican vs Democrat.

Crime, inflation, school choice. All things parents have at the top of their daily concerns. Democrats ignore or deflect the concern of parents.

Abortion, which they will get a chance to vote on every two years. But all these other things???Dems are ignoring.

They did?

I don’t remember any mass defunding of the police taking place. But since you bring it up, how would you characterize the use of their funding? Are they making as good a use of it as the mental and social institutions that the right successfully demanded to DEFUND?

In any event, don’t feel so bad. The right demanded to ARM THE MASS SHOOTERS and thanks to massive funding by the only recently bankrupted NRA, the FedSoc, and two stolen Supreme Court nominations, they’ve gotten their wish.

The right has armed the mass shooters, proliferated guns into the hands of every psychopath and invented an individual second amendment right to apply to every felon, convict and lunatic.

But that’s how it goes. You can’t deny rights to lunatics and criminals if your GQP Troll Party USA is literally chock full of them.

Everytime the The Five shed light on the rising crime rate and the Soros DA's insane policies, Jaun would dutifully declare there was NO increase in crime. Just crime as usual. I am still sticking to my prediction- the Democrats win the Senate seats in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and retain all their present seats. They will win all the governorships they hold today, pick up Arizona and Georgia, and Ron DeSantis and Marco Rubio will taken down in a month of vote counting in the big blue counties under court order and enforced by the FBI and federal marshals. If the senate races are close (under 3%) in Ohio and Iowa, they will count votes in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Des Moine until they win those seats, too. It's as if Republicans believe Democrats have bad policies, and Democrats believe Republicans are bad people.

Temujin said...

That caught in my brain as well. "You deserve to feel safe."

And that pretty much characterizes how people on the left are motivated. They are moved by what they feel, more than what they see or actually experience. More than data, more than facts, how things make you feel is how they rate their priorities. This is an example of feelings over action. Are you better off feeling safe or being safe? There is an obvious answer.

The disconnect comes when the left rates their priorities by how it makes them feel and project that onto the greater society. But what happens when the greater society does not feel the same way about, oh...drag queen story hours? And wonder why it's even being discussed when they're reading about someone getting pushed in front of a subway train and being told it doesn't happen very often, so don't worry?

This is why the left from Biden to Yellen to Hochul to Newsom to Brooks cannot understand anything about the pulse of America and the people doing the hard work every day, and Donald Trump, much to their dismay, can.

@hpudding: Well forced gestation and forced birth is pretty criminal. And only someone who never talked to a woman or burns with absolute hatred toward them would detach forced gestation and forced births from economic deprivation.

It is true beyond debate that you eventually will die either by some form of homicide, or natural cause. There is no other option. And until your death, during your entire life from conception, that has been irrevocably true.

So, to put a precise label on it, abortion is a form of homicide. Which, when premeditated, is *always* criminal. Yet, for some reason, what would be first degree murder in any other circumstance, gets a bye if it happens during pregnancy.

Of course, the counter to that is that women cannot enjoy the autonomy men posses without access to abortion. Except there is a fatal flaw hiding there. Women do not enjoy autonomy as a class, but rather individually.

At the individual level there are all manner of situations that entail great personal sacrifices in both time and money. A spouse suffers a debilitating stroke, and lingers for years. An adult child with severe depression. Similar examples severely compromising individual autonomy could fill entire comment boxes without taxing the imagination.

For each of those examples, though, homicide to regain autonomy is punished. Yet murdering an unborn baby isn't.

Perhaps you could explain that?

hpudding is having a bad day/week/month.

Recall he/she/xe spent the early summer months pinging off the usual democratical/legacy media fake polls which "showed" (LOL) the republicans collapsing, falling far behind the New Soviet Democraticals, etc.

This happens every single election cycle. But only every single election cycle.

This effort is always designed to pump up democratical enthusiasm to increase donations to democraticals and attempt to demoralize republicans.

The good news, as always, for the democraticals is how many GOPe-ers are always at the ready to assist the democraticals in their efforts. McConnell is doing his part for Team Dem, as was (they don't seem to be doing it quite so much at the moment) the old McCainiac Machine Ducey-ites in Arizona, the typical Bushy/Romney types across the board, Lindsay Graham, the Raffensberger crew in GA, etc.

However, by the Fall the fake pollsters on the left, which includes the Fox News polling outfit run by a lifelong democratical, know they have to begin to reflect some degree of reality, so little by little, their push polls and horrific poll-reading/not-polling-analysis "results" are manipulated to begin to show races tightening and, eventually, in a down democratical year like this one, show "surprising" republican strength.

hpudding's problem (at least one of them): he/she/xe actually BELIEVED the inevitable and repeated polling lies and he/she/xe based alot of his/her/xer's commentary at Althouse on those fake polls. So now that reality has hit him/her/xer in the head like a sack of taters, hpudding is flailing and, in my opinion, simply phoning in his/her/xer's weak missives.

I am still sticking to my prediction- the Democrats win the Senate seats in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and retain all their present seats.

Dems are not going to pick up any GOP Senate seats.
They're going to lose AZ, NV and GA. They may lose NH, CO, and / or WA

They will win all the governorships they hold today, pick up Arizona and Georgia, and Ron DeSantis and Marco Rubio will taken down in a month of vote counting in the big blue counties under court order and enforced by the FBI and federal marshals

They will not pick up any GOP governorships. They will lose WI, will probably lose OR and PA, and may lose MI and MN.

If the Dems try the steal you mention they will be firebombed, truck bombed, and sniped until the steal attempts end.

If the senate races are close (under 3%) in Ohio and Iowa, they will count votes in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Des Moine until they win those seats, too

Neither of these will be within 8%

The Democrats are playing for keeps now- the Rubicon was crossed in 2020.

We're playing for keeps, too. 2020 taught us that either we dont' allow the fraud, or we get screwed.

Jan 6 2021 taught us there's absolutely no point in peaceful protest. There's no reason to leave the guns at home, or worry about following the law. All there is is winning or losing.

And the Biden* Admin has taught us that we can't afford to lose.

400 million+ firearms in private hands. FI the Dems want to play Julius Caesar this year, there's plenty of us who are more than willing to play Crassus

I live in New York. I must say that the first time I saw an anti-Zeldin attack ad, I thought it was a pro -Zeldin ad. “He stood with trump. He supported the 2d amendment. He opposed all the stuff Biden had done.”

Abortion rights vs. crime and the economy… Hmmm. Well forced gestation and forced birth is pretty criminal. And only someone who never talked to a woman or burns with absolute hatred toward them would detach forced gestation and forced births from economic deprivation.

If they kept their legs closed and stopped having unprotected sex, they wouldn't have to worry about it. Nobody forced them to have sex. (usually. Of the hundreds of thousands of abortions daily, most are not from rape, but from people too lazy to use birth control) It is criminal to murder innocent babies because you are lazy.

New York State was practically a prison camp during COVID so don’t overlook Hochul’s full throated support of those policies and the news coming out about the effects of the lockdowns. Vermont was locked down for a couple of months and returned to normal pretty quickly and our Republican governor looks to be re-elected by ten points, crossing to New York was like going to another country, an Iron Curtain country.

Soros funding of D.A. races was supposed to have an outsized impact, and it did.

There are literally hundreds of thousands New Yorkers who might have voted for Zeldin now living here in Florida and neighboring states. I doubt there are enough rational voters left in NY to elect a Republican.

Kathy Hochul's inner circle in Albany includes Brad Hoylman, head of State Senate Judy, who has sponsored a bill to grease the parole of every single offender over 55 who has served 15 years by granting them repeat parole hearings before the state's perversely anti-incarceration parole board, essentially gaming parole to destroy victims and free the worst of the worst.

Two consequences: every surviving victim or family member must now re-live their trauma regularly by appearing to testify under hostile conditions every other year. Their lives, and any hard-fought closure, are over.

Serial killers, serial rapists, cannibals, child rapists, cop-killers, murderers, torture-killers -- nobody is exempt from potential release. Imagine how much power this gives, not just to the bloodiest sociopaths but to criminal syndicates on the outside who can intimidate survivors into not testifying.

Screw that lying slag. For justice's sake.

This is a Working Families Party bill. Take a good look at how many purportedly moderate Democrats are WFP members. Including Schumer and AOC. The Democrats have been entirely taken over by sadistic, anti-social nutcases. Women and children and, frankly, minorities hit hardest. Not a punchline anymore.

You'd be surprised by how many men there are who raped or played with or ate their victims post-mortem who will now eventually wear down the survivors and be set free. Fox Butterfield, who never met a violent felon he didn't worship, must be feeling tingling up both legs.

People who merely walked thru an open Capitol door are in prison without trial.

Democrats across the US are releasing hard core murderers - and these murderers are committing more murder.

Vote Democrat - Inga.

people too lazy to use birth control

Ok, I was in high school pre-AIDS-going-mainstream, but here is what I heard more than once back then: "I'm afraid I might be pregnant." "Geez, didn't he use a condom?" "He won't use one - he says it doesn't feel as good." "And you can't - ?" "No, I can't get the Pill, my parents would kill me."

If this still happens, I'm going to say that "lazy" isn't always the right adjective. The high school girl who can't figure out how to get the Pill or another very reliable form of contraception for herself, and who knows on some level that the guy she loves, or thinks she loves, will not stick around if she doesn't put out but also doesn't want to be troubled with wearing that raincoat, is not being "lazy" - she's being afraid of being left. It's still a terrible excuse.

Plus voters are starting to realize that trump isn’t nearly as disruptive as the democrat when in charge. Wars, halting energy production, rampant inflation, tremendous deficit spending, a covid emergency STILL ( yet no masks on Biden ), grooming children, inciting racial hatred, tagging parents as domestic terrorists, knocking down doors at 6:00am to arrest 80 year olds and fathers in front of children, their retirements down by almost 40%, political prisoners.

Ann, have you felt that Biden has been a calming POTUS?

And that is in only two years.

"Don't tell me what you feel, tell me what you think."

ha ha ha

The answer to that is, "I think you're an asshole."

The whole courtroom cracks up. The judge has to hammer his gavel. And then you say...

"Sorry, judge, I was just answering his question. He wanted to know my thoughts."

Bored prisoners have plenty of time to plan revenge on those who testified against them. Most do not blame their lawbreaking for incarceration, they blame the witness, or the cops.

I know politics is just about how we feel, but if you want people to feel safe, you've got to convince them that they are safe, and giving it away that you are just going after their feelings gives the brain a bit of a chance to notice that this is nothing but an effort at emotional manipulation.

I always had the feeling (can't prove it) that Stephen Breyer was a high-performing sociopath. What gave me that feeling was his opinion in Stenberg v. Carhart. It's entirely possible to write about partial-birth abortion and late-term abortion without upsetting people. You just say that "liberty" shit. It's a woman's right to choose!

You can read O'Connor's opinion or Ginsburg's opinion to see how a couple of women handled a tough case for the pro-choice side.

Breyer was simply incapable of doing that. His opinion got right down into the nitty-gritty of decapitation and dismemberment. Reading that damn thing made me a pro-lifer, no ifs, no ands, no buts.

It can be that feelings can get in your way if you're a doctor. It's no good operating on people if you start feeling stuff. "Oh, gosh, I hope I don't kill Bob, this is so important." So if you are on the sociopathic spectrum, I would encourage you to go to medical school and learn surgery, where your non-feelings will be a positive boon.

That becomes a problem, however, if our medical and legal authorities toss out the Hippocratic Oath and start decapitating babies and castrating little boys. You don't realize you're doing anything wrong, because you didn't get much of that human empathy, and all the other thinkers around you are also deranged sociopaths.

When the feelers in a society realize what you're up, you're in deep shit. That's why high-performing sociopaths typically learn to lie, lie, lie. For some reason, Justice Breyer decided he was going to be honest about what he was talking about. And that honesty, that fact-based opinion, is what me the pro-lifer I am today.

I have commonly said, “okay, that’s how you feel. Now tell me what you think”.

The distinction became clear when people would say “do you feel safer today than on 9/11?” as a knock on Bush. My response was how I felt on or before 9/11 wasn’t important. I felt perfectly safe going to my job at the Trade Center that day. I wasn’t.

Yep, it's called "rape".

So you agree that when the state forces a woman to carry a pregnancy to term it’s violating her in the way a rape would? I agree. Doubly so when the pregnancy was itself the result of a rape. Like that 10-year old that Ohio would have forced to birth a rapist’s fetus.

And then there’s Skipper, who mistakenly believes that methods of death are “options,” that it’s not murder to refuse to use one’s body to keep anyone needing their kidney, blood, or bone marrow to stay alive but somehow is if the body part needed is a uterus and if that entity is a fetus rather than an actual legal person. Even though refusing to sustain a fetus has never been prosecuted as murder, just as refusing to use one’s blood, bone marrow or other body parts to sustain a donor recipient has never been prosecuted as murder, either.
