"The protests started small, outside the Tehran hospital where a 22-year old Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini died last week after being detained by the 'morality police'..."

"... for an untold violation of the country’s harsh strictures on women’s dress. By Tuesday, the protests were racing across the country, in a burst of grief, anger and defiance. Many were led by women, who burned their headscarves, cut their hair and chanted, 'Death to the dictator.' The ferocity of the protests is fueled by outrage over many things at once: the allegations that Amini was beaten in custody before she collapsed and fell into a coma; the priorities of Iran’s government, led by ultraconservative President Ebrahim Raisi, who has strictly enforced dress codes and empowered the hated morality police at a time of widespread economic suffering... Many of the protests have been concentrated in the west, the poor, predominantly Kurdish region Amini’s family hails from. The Kurds — who speak their own language, have a distinct cultural identity and are mostly Sunni Muslims in a majority-Shiite country — have complained for decades of neglect by the central government.... In a video from Kerman, in southeastern Iran, a young woman sitting on a utility box, surrounded by a cheering crowd, is seen removing her headscarf and cutting off her own hair. 'An Iranian will die but will not accept oppression,' the crowd chants...."

Just as Biden's handlers plan to give the Iran government billions. Obama missed a chance to help the Iranian people and now Biden will follow.

Ultraconservative. President Raisi should be grateful. At least WaPo hasn't labeled him ultra-MAGA, else Mr. Biden would be trying to kill him under the wheels of an SUV rather than bribe him with a planeload of cash.

that last part doesn't seem quite right. It seems they've been pretty accepting of oppression for the last few decades.

"ultraconservative"

Wrong word use.

The correct term would be Islamist or Islamic fundamentalism.

But the Left can never admit that Islam is the most retrograde force in the world today. As Ilhan Omar said, "Some people did some thing."

Interesting fact -

In the Ayatollah's interpretation of Islam, a man who goes all the way through sex reassignment surgery is legally and culturally a woman, and should be socially accepted as such. No such provision exists for female phalloplasty (aka 'the elephant'). Furthermore, during the transition from man to 'woman' the subject is technically in severe violation of Islamic law and could be subject to stoning at any moment, for which a local imam's injunction is required.

I mention this because I was about to comment that maybe Iranian women could just 'identify as male', but after looking it up realized that there's inequality in Iran's transgenderism laws.

There's three words I never thought I'd say together, 'Iran's transgenderism laws'. Looney.

Robert Marshall said...

By all means, Brandon, let's make nice with this lovely regime. I wouldn't count on getting very far with the Mullahs, on your transgender rights push, however.

Looks like Biden's allies are having some problems repressing their own people.

Biden is doing his best to shore up the power of the Iranian Regime.

No opportunities here to expand freedom in the world.

Because the Biden Regime and the people that support it are happy to see political dissidents jailed and beaten.

There will be no support for these women from the United States while the current regime is in power.

Thank the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we are not Mohammedans. And thank Him too that on May 14, 1948 a nation was born in a day because Harry Truman loved the Jews when no one else in DC did.

I will never understand how Iran got so fucked up for so long.

I've known many Iranians from the time of the Shah.

They are really smart people as a whole...

From the WaPo excerpt published here it seems it's the fault of the poor, ignorant Sunny Muslims who don't believe in the uplifting rhetoric of the Shia sect. BTW, this is the government Brandon wants to shower with billions of dollars while removing all sanctions.

I read this story and thought, "Save for a few minor details, isn't this what is going to happen here in America soon?" The minor details being brave young women daring to say "I am a woman, and I'm proud of it, and in fact I believe in Jesus!" and daring the far leftist bully brigades that now infest our government to arrest and beat her to death?

AS Joe Biden and company have made abundantly clear, they fully intend to be as repressive as the Iranians are.

So kudos to those brave Iranians trying to stand up against oppressive dictatorship, and may we also have that same spirit here in America--it will be needed in the next few years, for sure.

If they want their protests to get them somewhere, they have to time it better. Stop speaking out when there's a Democrat in the White House. Bush, yes. Obama, no. Trump, yes. Biden, no.

They'll never win their freedom this way.

"My Fatherland or My Head Scarf, A Play About a Girl Who Burns Her Head Scarf" was featured in Orhan Pamuk's Snow. I remembered it as a pro-headscarf slogan, "Not Without My Headscarf." That may be in the novel too. I suppose things ended up better for Pamuk's fictional heroine than they do for headscarf burners in Iran.

Maybe the Biden Administration can support some referenda for the Kurds to secede and form their own country, like in Kosovo.

You're a democratical. What you really mean, and what you democraticals have done, is deliver much "more cash to them".

Lots and lots of cash.

And the Iranian regime doesn't even bother thanking you and Team Dem.

---The ferocity of the protests is fueled by outrage over many things at once

The significant cheating in the last election;
the calls for assassinations of members of one opposition party, and the several attempts at them, including at least one successful murder;
the widespread censorship and persecution of those who express criticism of policies, or other dissent;
the "show trials" of protestors, and their heavy-handed jail terms;
the blocking of careers for those not in sync with the nation's administration;
the confiscation of weapons from ordinary citizens to prevent revolt;
the mandate for taking experimental medicines as "guinea pigs," despite dangerous side effects.

Yes, the Pelosi-Biden regime is keeping up with the Ayatollah quite nicely.

Obama's unilateral override of claims against the regime and funding of World War Springs ("second Iraq war"), which, despite bureaucratic protests, journolistic braying, and congressional sabotage, was summarily quashed by Trump and Putin in its formative years.

Let us bear witness to the hypocrisy of the left.
Remember the "Green Revolution"? The Iranian government was killing protestors in the streets.
Neda Agha Soltan was coming home from her piano lesson when she was shot in the throat by a government sniper. President Obama made a reference to the Green Movement in a speech. A year later. Where were you then Obama worshipers?
About as sincere as a dose of clap.

My daughter and son-in-law took us to a hip middle eastern restaurant in Atlanta this weekend. One of the signature cocktails was "Long Live the Shah." Most of the staff appeared to be gay. Makes sense.
We had a great time and the food was really good. The cocktail was sort of a meh Old Fashioned, though.

That isn't true.

The "Big Guy" is getting his 10%. And so are the corrupt cronies in DC.

Inga is just a stupid pawn like the rest of the Democrat and GOPe voters.

There are still Bush/Romney supporters here who think they are smarter than Inga.

How many members of the "morality police" did they hunt down and beat to death? 0?

That's not a fierce protest.

I seriously doubt that. But...why would we? It's not our place to help overthrow governments of other nations. Which is not to say that we haven't been involved in doing so. (We helped overthrow the elected Iranian government in the 1950s that allowed the Shah to take power.) We never do it for the "good of the people," but only for the advantages that accrue to the US.

Because they're a State sponsor of international terrorism, directed at the US and at US allies.

The only Americans who wouldn't support supporting the Iranians trying to overthrow that government, and Americans who hate America.

Which explains why Cook, Obama, and Biden are all against helping
