"It was on a trip to Lebanon in 2018 to visit his father that Hadi changed from a popular, loving son to a moody introvert...."

"'The first hour he gets there he called me, he wanted to come back. He stayed for approximately 28 days but the trip did not go well with his father, he felt very alone.... I was expecting him to come back motivated, to complete school, to get his degree and a job. But instead he locked himself in the basement. He had changed a lot, he didn't say anything to me or his sisters for months. I couldn't tell you much about his life after that because he has isolated me since 2018. If I approach him sometimes he says hi, sometimes he just ignores me and walks away. He sleeps during the day and wakes and eats during the night. He lives in the basement. He cooks his own food...."

"'One time he argued with me asking why I encouraged him to get an education instead of focusing on religion. He was angry that I did not introduce him to Islam from a young age.... I'm Lebanese but I've been here for 26 years. I'm living a simple life as a single mom, trying to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table for my kids. I don't care about politics, I'm not religious. I was born a Muslim and that's it basically. I didn't push my kids into religion or force anything on my son. I don't know anyone in Iran, all my family are here.... I have not watched the video of what happened, I don't want to.... The FBI gave me a document to sign saying they had taken his computer, his PlayStation, some books, some other items including knives and a sharpener. I feel sorry for Mr. Rushdie. I hope he recovers but there's nothing much I can say or do because this wasn't my act.'"

If your son is an adult — and 24 is 6 years into adulthood — don't let him live in your basement if he's hostile to you and not communicating with you, just shunning you. ESPECIALLY if he turned from a nice person into a glum asshole after spending a month in Lebanon.

How do you evict a terrorist? "Take your suicide vest and get out of my basement!"

What do you expect? The ENTIRE COUNTRY of Lebanon used to be majority Christian. Of course the Iranians in Lebanon (what are they doing in Lebanon?) are going to radicalize the kid. The Islamists have turned the whole country into a radical Muslim hell-hole.

Hadi Matar is 24 now, so he was about 20 in 2018, when he went to Lebanon.

When I was about 20, I became a Tolstoyan, a radical Christian pacifist. I applied for conscientious-objector status when I registered for the draft. I became a pre-med major, because I intended to become a doctor in Africa, like Albert Schweitzer.

That Tolstoyan period of my life lasted about two years.

I remember the moment when I snapped out of it. I was watching the Dragnet television show, and Joe Friday was lecturing a couple of young criminal punks -- and I realized that I agreed completely with his lecture.

Soon I dropped all my pre-med classes, changed my major to Slavic languages, and eventually joined the US Air Force.

So, I think of being 20-years-old as being in an unstable, impressionable age.

My first instinct is to suspect he was raped. A character turn that abrupt is not just moodiness or a religious indoctrination. Those things are the effect.

This is a good hypothesis.

Still, the motive remains a mystery.

I gotta say, I also think Kate has a good hypothesis. The abrupt mood and character change indicates something more than a few religious classes. Although, the evidence my own eyes over the years tells me that Islamic religious classes are different than those I used to take. Still...

Ann- I think first generation immigrant parents and children from many cultures live together for a long time. Until the child gets married. They just don't send them out. It's a culture thing. Family takes care of family. It's not like here where we tolerate our family. Although our Gen Zs are also living in many a basement. But it's not because of family fondness.

Mike Sylwester, you've lived an interesting life. Not for nothing, but though, as you point out, 20 is an unstable, impressionable age, you would still be allowed and encouraged to change your gender if you so desired at that age. Or much younger. Because nothing says progressive like having body parts removed.

She let the problem solve itself. He's not living with her anymore and she doesn't have to bear any weight for having kicked him out (if she had, and then he'd done this, people would blame her--though not rightfully so).

Sounds like she's very much washing her hands of his decisions and is moving on, not defending him or taking any responsibility or guilt.

TIL one can be radicalized in a month.

What did four years of Trump do to the left?

Liz Cheney knows what it did to the right.

Enough about Howard, what are your opinions on Hadi?

I see an attempt to garner sympathy for Hadar for the sentencing.
