A very special selection of TikTok videos for you today. Let me know what you like.

1. Bob Dylan sings "Happy Birthday" to Brian Wilson! (Wilson turns 80 today. Dylan preceded him in octogenarianism by 1 year, so he knows whereof he sings. Perhaps I should also mention that Paul McCartney turned 80 two days ago. Let us marvel at the greatness of octogenarian men! Thanks for hanging on all these years, o, fabulous heroes!)

2. Pieface. Not a pie in the face. A pie face.

3. One lady crosses the street in the flood, so shouldn't the second lady?

4. How you pass someone on a hiking trail compared to how your dad does.

5. "If European Americans were the cultural other: Performative Holiday Merch Edition."

6. The Italian husband is told "Use your noodle."

7. The way Mike Wallace spoke to Maria Callas in 1974.

8. Do you mean to tell me there are people who use washcloths?

9. The way department stores talk to each other.

All of us octogenarians know greatness but some of us just have never been heard of on social media sites.

Most of us worry about the septuagenarians following behind who are great only in their own minds - yes, I am talking about Sleepy Joe and TFG who contemplate a second term in '24.

The one that kept my interest until the end was the flood. The first lady barely made it, and she never would have had she waited a moment longer. The bigger, unanswered question, who was in the better location? Initially, I would have thought crossing the road was better, but not by the end of it, at least standing where they were.

The flood is absolutely terrifying - how on earth did the first woman make it across?

I had to click on Brian Wilson's page and see all the other great musicians wishing him a happy birthday. "Brian Wilson, Inventor of California" might be a bit of an exaggeration, but "Refiner of California" wouldn't be far from the truth, at least for some definitions of California. I listened to all 80 songs on the new Beach Boys Sounds of Summer compilation set the other day. There was a big chunk of the stuff in the latter part of the 80 songs that was technically by The Beach Boys but didn't really sound like The Beach Boys, but I guess it's true that any musical act that survives for decades is going to go off track occasionally. Not every album is going to be Pet Sounds.

I live by a creek that often rises into a raging flood when it rains because the street storm drains empty into it. One time a couple of guys tried crossing one of the footbridges during such a rain.

The emergency crews pulled them out about a half-mile downstream. One alive, the other not.

OMG, the pie face was great and the department store sketch was awesome.

I use a washcloth. Now I don't use it all over my body but I use it on my face, back, and feet. I don't get why that's gross. If it gets dirty, you throw it in the wash.

Mike Wallace's questioning of Maria Callas was not probing. It was rude....When she lost her voice, it was probably more of a psychic blow than when Dylan lost his. I don't even know that if, in fact, Dylan can be said to have lost his voice.....It's kind of depressing to think of Dylan as an octogenarian. I remember a cartoon where Charley Brown was depressed to learn that Dylan had turned thirty.

The flood was scary. So too in its own way was the Performative European-American Holiday Merch sketch. I really don't feel like watching anymore after that.

I liked Mike Wallace using his toxic paternalism trying to bully the man-eater but she remained toadally unfazed.

Lesson is:

Never try to cross moving water.

holy moly that's frightening. I watched a few times. The first lady to cross is really lucky. the mud river got really nasty right after she got over
... if you watch again, watch the building next to the pink building surrounded by flood. It's collapsing.

I hope they survived.

The Italian husband is such a charmer. What a cute smile!

The floodwater is amazing. Good thing the second woman stayed put. The background 'oohs' and 'ahhs' provided some levity.
I have a particular fondness for No. 4 as that is a close relative and his father to a T.

Pie face, Italian husband (always a winner), and Department stores. Good picks!

Italian husband's wife: "Use your noodle. What do you think it was?" Hahahaha

"cultural other" is such nonsense

I'm in love with the Italian husband.
Flood was terrifying.
Mike Wallace is a jerk.
I agree about washcloths even though my husband uses one. I use a shower sponge!
Cultural other lady is repulsive.
Pie face is excellent.

PS We do need a TikTok tag! How else can I find the spicy hat again?

I watched them all &the only one I really liked was Bob Dylan.
(&confession: I don’t even like Bob Dylan!!!)(imsorryimsorryimsorry!!!)

If one doesn’t used a washcloth, what does one use? Those scruchy thingies?

What spicy hat?

I added the tag.

I'm disappointed that no one especially liked the "cultural other" sketch. I assume you get it, that she's turning the tables on how white people treat black people. I thought that was done with a lot of observation and precision. She's making fun of white people who patronize black people. Every item corresponds to something white people do toward black people — such as lumping all of Africa together.

I liked the sly humor of pitching the holiday to celebrate European Americans. It was definitely insulting to choose the sheep as the mascot and blather on about how "discoveries" are so important to the European American community. I found the whole bit enjoyable. I smiled at the Seinfeld-esque query about what's up with the washcloth?

tim maguire said...

Loved the pie face. Agree with the towel guy--there are washcloths in my shower, somebody's using them, but not me. I never understood why someone would do that.

The flood was scary, and it's not all clear in the video that the woman who made it across is any better off than the people who waited too long and lost the opportunity.

Dept store was hilarious. A very LA sketch.

J L Oliver said...

Washcloths are polarizing, but this guy looks like he has never gotten dirty enough to us one.

I skipped it because the description reminded me of the "I gave 5 cultures an orange"-type bits and they didn't interest me so much (except for oatmeal, that one did, so I guess I just undermined myself, but that was my thinking, there's no going back).

In response to your comment, I watched it and thought it was really well done. Especially the sheep as the European-American Freedom Day mascot. She's not just commenting on white people--she's commenting on African Americans too--they're behind as many of the things she's complaining about as white people are.

Wash cloths exfoliate better than soapy hands.

What spicy hat??? Ann, best TikTok ever! The Renaissance painting with the guys talking "isn't that your hat he's wearing?" ending with "this is the f'ing worst day of my life."

Oh thank heavens! I found it!

Cultural Other video falls flat because it's not a "freedom day" as much as a national birth day. They're doing apples to oranges. Besides, much of what they're trying to flip on us - marketing gimmicks and a general lack of knowledge about the holiday - already exists for the July 4th Holiday. So it's just a big meh.

Flood was my favorite today, and I hope the second lady made the right choice. She definitely would be swept away by that quickly rising flood, but I saw the building behind her getting torn up and hope that wasn't what happened to her building.

Leslie Graves said...

That flood was viscerally terrifying. (I could say the same about the Mike Wallace bit.)

Pie Face looked scary when it was baked; also, I disagreed with the mouth treatment.

i laughed during Euro-american Holiday Marketing meeting when the turbaned lady says skeptically 'Sounds made-up'. Which I admit I often think when 'Happy Kwanza' is going on.

Let us marvel at the greatness of octogenarian men!

Make that former greatness.... from time well before they were octogenarians.

I know some school girl crushes never die, but oooofff.

I saw a recent video of Sir Paul singing to a crowd. He turned around and gave an azz shake to the crowd. It was pathetic. So was his singing.

My wife went to a Dylan concert a couple of years ago. She pronounced it the worst concert she's ever seen.
