"The New York Times is looking to add to its list of 132 Pulitzer Prizes — by far the most of any news organization — when the 2022 recipients for journalism are announced on Monday. Yet the war in Ukraine..."

"... has renewed questions of whether the Times should return a Pulitzer awarded 90 years ago for work by Walter Duranty, its charismatic chief correspondent in the Soviet Union. 'He is the personification of evil in journalism," says Oksana Piaseckyj, a Ukrainian-American activist who came to the U.S. as a child refugee in 1950. She is among the advocates for the return of the award. 'We think he was like the originator of fake news.'"

NPR reports.

Interesting that NPR would cover this angle. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for NYT to cough up that trinket. And, really, isn't it more useful right where it is: representing many decades of uninterrupted dishonesty and suppression of truth? Not just that, but a knowingly futile suppression; a proven public lie; an open and obvious collusion among the givers and the receivers of the award that tells the world, "We know that only fools would believe us, and we don't care."

You know it's old hat when NPR gets around to mentioning it. But what's 90 years among friends?

Althouse probably finds it terribly au courant, though. Challenging criticism. Like her complaints about punctuation.

Forget Duranty, how about the awards they won for the thoroughly discredited Russia, Russia, Russia bullshit.

There is no chance that the NYT surrenders their trinket (great description). They would be forced to account for their award-winning and astonishingly shoddy reporting of the Trump Russia hoax.

The Duranty Pulitzer is outrageous and always has been. Why it wasn't returned long ago says quite a lot, actually.

Wasn’t it a Pulitzer that they got for perpetuating the RussiaGate hoax?

A Pulitzer Prize has been a mark of dishonor for some time, I'm sure the NY Times deserves another. The Daily Mail is the best American newspaper.

Duranty. Holomodor. Refuse to correct facts.

Win it hands down.

“ It can be fraught, she says, to start reassessing past judgments through the lens of the present.” Says Anne Applebaum of the Pulitzer committee. I suppose we are wrong to judge Jefferson Davis through the lens of the present. Bring back all the statues, and the ill-treated Chamberlains rock.

Another Pulitzer? You mean, like this?

Well, yeah, the Times really f*cked up in publishing Duranty's lies, but they ought to get some credit for their courageous coverage of Hunter Biden's laptop, right? Right?

If Walter Duranty was the originator of Fake News does that mean he, or his estate, is owed royalty payments?

Asking as an accountant.

How about the ghost of kiev or snake island that was real right?

By his refusal to restore American energy independence, Biden and his Greenie friends are precipitating another terrible famine. Next fall, when the problem is clear, will be too late to start up oil nd gas production. They are needed now, this summer, to plant, cultivate and harvest the abundant crops which machines make possible and which the world depends on. Perhaps the NYT is hoping for a Pulitzer for the way it will cover the famine. But the story this time is not the famine as it unfolds next fall, the story is Biden refusing to avert the famine right now.

If they don't give back Walter Duranty's Pulitzer, they can at least tear down his statue.

how is this Duranty prize any different from the 2018 prize Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and its connections to the Trump campaign?

or, how about their 2021 prize for covid ??

They got one for their reporting on the fake Russian Collusion. It was fake. They should return it. Pulitzers are as useless as Nobel peace prizes are now. Anybody can get one if they are on the right side of the wrong side of history.

Duranty is most definitely not the origin of "fake news." If we are only including newspapers and the like, then the fabricating of news, whether to fit an agenda, general naivete, sensationalism, and/or laziness, goes back to the earliest examples. Duranty is one of the worst examples in history, a genuinely evil act. That said, at this point the NYT is such an obvious partisan news source, spewing fake news and bad reporting on a daily basis without apology, that his prize does not really make them seem any worse anymore.

Not that the Pulitzer Prize cares. It is a captured institution. It exists merely to laud their clients, no matter what they do. Quite a few prizes and awards these days are so corrupted as to be meaningless.

The Pulitzer is about as meaningful as the Nobel Peace Prize, i.e., not very.

If the Duranty award is finally returned, could Ukraine claim it as a wsr prize?
