"Mr. Zelensky invokes Martin Luther King Jr. in saying 'I have a dream," and then saying 'I have a need' to protect the sky, as he presses Congress for a no-fly zone."

The NYT is live-chatting Zelensky's address to Congress, which is in progress now.

"President Zelensky is layering in American touchstones in his address: Mount Rushmore to discuss shared values, Pearl Harbor and 9/11 to recall shared threats."

UPDATE: He asks us to watch a video. The video evokes great empathy. It's hard for me to imagine anyone watching and not weeping. After the video, Zelensky speaks in English. I transcribed this line: "I see no sense in life if it cannot stop the deaths."

A no-fly zone would require US fighters to shoot down Russian jets. We’re afraid to route Polish (and German?) MiG-29s through this country on their way to Ukraine, lest Washington, New York, and a bunch of other US cities disappear in nuclear fireballs. No, I don’t think so.

Ship Stinger missiles to Ukraine, ship them Patriot missiles, ship them 40mm guns, but don’t bother sending US fighter pilots unless you really do want a nuclear ballistic missile exchange between the US and Russia.

Meanwhile, President Biden plans to block fireworks over Mount Rushmore on July 4th for the second year in a row, denigrating the shared values of most Americans?

Biden administration blocks July 4 fireworks at Mount Rushmore for second year in a row

The Biden administration is preventing South Dakota from putting on a fireworks display at Mount Rushmore for the second year in a row, in a decision harshly criticized by Republican Gov. Kristi Noem.

In a March 14 letter, the National Park Service informed the South Dakota Department of Tourism that a request for a permit to put on the fireworks display was denied. "After careful consideration, the NPS has determined that we are unable to grant your request for this permit to hold a special event with fireworks at the Memorial," the letter stated.

I am not listening. I like Zelensky -- but all the foot-stomping for war, count me out. Z will have to deal unless he wants his country totally destroyed. NATO and Biden will do little to change that fate. They misled Ukraine into this and will not get them out of it, no-fly zone or not. Meanwhile, we play kissy face with the genocidal goons of Iran with the help of RUSSIA! And China will be happy to take all that Russian oil once they build the needed infrastructure -- along with the forests and resources of Russia's vast landmass. How can anyone take this sideshow seriously?

I watched our President Joe try to give a speech yesterday. It is so painful just to watch him stumble, get his thoughts mixed up, forget who is around him, not know his own cabinet members, and flail with words, while the entirety of our government, media, academia, tech giants all continue to hold his hand and prop him (and Kamala) up. He is incapable of leading a child to the bathroom, let alone lead the nation- or the world- in anything. And frankly, when he was a young Senator, he could hold a thought better, but his thoughts were bullshit then, too. He has never been a leader. He used to be a loud talker. That's all.

I feel horribly for Zelenskyy that he has to beg this failing man, and his less than mediocre team, for help. I do not want us sending any of our people to fight. But Zelenskyy is correct: If President Biden is supposedly the leader of the US, then he has to be the leader for peace. He/we have to be that. To stand down to Russia is to allow death and murder- as we did in Aleppo. We cannot stop it worldwide. But sometimes we do get that chance to step up.

We are at the point where we have to figure out every possible way to get arms, jets, and ammunition to the Ukrainians, to allow them to defend themselves, and the West. If the US continues to 'lead from behind', as Obama taught his team to do, history will reflect this is the time when the US chose to abdicate it's role as leaders of the free world. It is not a role we love to play, but it is our place in history. We are the ones. If not us, then who?

Among the nations of the West, there has to be a way to get these supplies to the Ukrainians, to allow them to do the dirty work. Like Joe Biden, Putin's Russia is failing as well. They are short men and supplies. As this drags out, Putin will either have to back off and negotiate a peace, or do something the world will recoil at. At that time, if we had done nothing, what will we tell each other?

And as the Chinese watch how the West reacts, what will they learn as they stare out at Taiwan?

We in the US have the worst leaders I've ever seen in my lifetime. Right now. Almost all of them, from Congress to our Executive branch. I don't feel good about anything they do when they get together. But sitting back now and watching cannot be acceptable. I don't know how we would rationalize the results.

Elections do have consequences, don't they?

And, relative to my comment at 8:30, keep in mind that before the invasion I had advocated for placing F-15 and F-22 fighters in NATO allies that border on Ukraine (also ground attack aircraft like F-15Es and A-10s). It’s one thing to to threaten “you start something, there’s going to be something” and quite another to jump into the middle of a gunfight.

Biden considers giving devastating Switchblade tank-killing 'kamikaze' drones to Ukrainians as part of new $1BN arms package he will unveil today as Zelensky prepares to plead with Congress at 9am TODAY for more weapons to defend his country

"...The most powerful of the two Switchblades, the Switchblade 600, weighs 50lbs and can hover over a target for 40 minutes before darting down at speeds of 115mph, piercing armor and destroying a tank.

The lighter Switchblade 300 is intended to kill people in the open and passengers in a vehicle.

It weighs only 5.5lbs but can travel for six miles, hover for 15 minutes, and then dive down to a target at 100mph.

Both Switchblades are designed to be easily portable, fitting into a rucksack and fired from a tube set up in 10 minutes. They were chosen for their ease-of-use, and because prospective operators require comparatively little training before use.

They are also intended to be cost-efficient; a Switchblade 300 costs $6,000, versus a $150,000-a-time Hellfire missile, fired from a conventional Predator or Reaper drone.

An additional advantage of the Switchblade, AeroVironment say, is that the strike can be aborted seconds before the target is hit - unlike a Hellfire drone. Hellfires have infamously hit targets which later turned out to be innocent civilians.

The idea of sending Switchblades to Ukraine was first reported by NBC News."

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10617887/Biden-considering-supplying-Ukraine-easy-use-Switchblade-KAMIKAZE-DRONES.html

Obviously, the leak of this information to NBC News definitely shouldn't have happened until the Switchblades were safely in the hands of the Ukrainians.

Unless, of course, it was a political virtue-signaling leak to convey the idea that Biden isn't entirely comatose yet.

Zelensky is now a historical figure, and that is no small thing for any professional entertainer. I would like to propose that Zelensky will continue to ask for that which we will never give him while we send him everything short of that. The Ukrainians are familiar enough with their position of alienation of affection from all parties involved by now to play the game with a high degree of sophistication The hinge is that we do not know if they can kill Russian air fire from the ground effectively enough to survive.

We say that we do not provide real time targeting info from NATO but that's a hard thing to prove or disprove. I am sure that NATO will continue to fight this "special operation" to the last Ukrainian. May God's grace cover all involved.

So the thinking is that a nuclear armed country absolutely will use nukes in offensive attacks against US cities, when faced with conventional forces stopping their invasion of a third country, despite the horrible logic of MAD? So we cannot fight, at all, ever, to stop such an invasion by a nuclear armed country.

And simultaneously, we must allow Iran's doomsday cultists, who have already spent decades terrorizing and warring against their neighbors directly and via proxies, to have nuclear armed ballistic missiles because stopping conventionally-armed Iran from producing nukes and ballistic missiles is costly and risky.

My cognitive dissonance meter is overloaded.

What pray tell does any of this have to do with the security of the USA? From 1790-1992 the Ukraine was ruled by Moscow and nobody gave a damn. Now, the Ukraine is worth WW III. Tommorrow Ukraine could win, or Russia could win, and it won't make a damn bit of difference to the defense/interests of the USA. In fact, this intervention is making us poorer.

This creep zelensky needs to negotiate a peace with Putin, instead of getting his people killed and trying to start WW III.

Even if I was a Putin hater or loved the Ukraine, I would want this war to end. And then have endless low level death and destruction for years. To hell with that.

My issue is our half-in is destruction of the Russian economy and arming of Ukraine as a direct response to Russia attacking Ukraine. That is, we are using our might to directly harm Russia in response to their war. So we are in fact participating in a war and we have chosen a side. But we are artificially declaring that we aren't really at war with Russia cause, like, none of our soldiers are the ones dying. By that same mentality, sending a hunter-killer drone swarm into Ukraine to wipe out Russian military would also not be us at war with Russia.

P.s. Obama in 2009 stood beside then Russian President and re-affirmed our commitment to Ukrainian security protection in exchange for their de-nuclearization. While our current Pres was VP. Just saying....do we stand by our words or not?

Not wanting this to escalate into WWIII is not the same thing as taking Putin's side. Putin is a thug who I hope will be ousted by the oligarchy that supported him. The longer the Ukrainians can hold out, the more likely that will happen. So I am routing for the Ukrainians on this one, even if it makes Biden look good.

That being said, a shooting war between nuclear powers is an insane idea. You don't have to want to suck Vlad's dick to understand that. The losing side in that kind of fight has an enormous incentive to go nuclear to prevent defeat. It starts with tactical nuclear weapons (battle field nukes) and ends with ICBMs. It's not complicated.
