It's approaching 80 degrees in Washington DC today (but dropping to 50 tomorrow). Wild how different the winter can be.

Is that a work truck or do you actually plan to go camping?

I never watch cable news, or any TV news outside of Bloomberg, but the IRL people I know who do watch it, left and right, are baying for WW3.

We both went for the easy joke...but still a classic : )

LOL. We got old but that joke never will.

So - what's the truck for?

Ready for chasing waterfalls.

From IMBD (I am big deal): Plot— Photographer/ blogger Ann travels to a remote lodge to find mythical waterfalls and falls for handsome (in her opinion) guide/commenter Meade. They adventure to find the mystic waterfalls of northern Wisconsin and discover their true feelings.

Nice truck.

I adore my pickup and what it allows me to do. Not sure how much longer the green fascists will allow me to keep it.

Curious George said...

"Nice truck."

X2 Same model as mine, just newer. I like the Super Cab except when grocery shopping and then wanting to put the groceries in the back seat. If there is a car next to you the rear door blocks you from access to the cart.

Meade said...

Yeah. For chasing waterfalls, singletrack, hot springs and starry nights

I have a big bank of man points. I can afford the hit.

cryptic. Is this a good time of year in WI for waterfall hunting?

Meanwhile - here in CO..

1000 homes lost...
XCEL DOESN'T CARE HOW MUCH IT COSTS TO REBUILD YOUR HOME Because they are standing in the way of allowing victims of the Marshall Fire to rebuild under the old building codes that cost way less. This story lays out how Xcel, who has every incentive to want everything in your house "electric" so they get ALL of your energy money, is refusing to let Superior give those folks a pass. Instead they want them to build homes without any natural gas lines for cooking or heating. How government is allowing themselves to be pushed around by Xcel is really interesting, and I sure hope the people of Superior and Louisville let those elected officials know how they feel in the next election cycle. By the way, the incentives that Xcel says will cover the costs of the upgrades (they won't) aren't even guaranteed."

Original Mike has so many man points that he can afford to miss every free throw and still finish sole conference champion with a #1 seed in the tourney.

Alright you two. A nice new truck to drive to Omaha for the visit of a lifetime!

We have something here in Wisconsin called "waterfall season." See "12 Wisconsin waterfalls to explore in the spring." Based on this winter's snowfall, an especially nice waterfall season is predicted.

Nice transport! I trust it's more comfortable than the TT, at least for sleeping!

Maybe a supper club or two also? Is it heated, not counting body heat?

…Don’t go chasing waterfalls
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to
I know that you’re gonna have it your way or nothing at all
But I think you’re moving too fast

(Not the same as what you plan on doing)

Russia looks to be about to (tomorrow) nationalize all its leased airplanes, so that the lease companies can't repossess them. About 500 out of their 900 airliners.

That's bad for the leasing companies and insurance companies, but if this is the new reality the costs to the airlines for leasing and insurance will skyrocket owing to sovereign risk introduced, which means ticket prices go up yet more. By a lot.

There had been an international agreement about the ability to repossess aircraft, standardized all over the world, that made the whole business model possible. Now gone.

Another gentlemen's agreement that everything functioned with. Congress has been abrogating them for years now, so this is just the latest.

Meade and Original Mike:

There are all sorts of waterfalls along the Niobrara River. You see them from the river but the largest and best is Smith Falls which is now a state park. You can access Smith Falls from the land and road on the canyon.

Yes.

It also has fans (for summer).

I wasn't happy to see the snow. But I know it's dry here in southern WI, so I'm happy for the moisture.

I have a similar camper.
To carry our bikes, I got
a receiver hitch bike rack.

If hooked up directly, it blocks the door.

So I bought a receiver hitch extender
(~$15 at Walmart) that moves the carrier
back far enough to open the door.

I also asked a steel fabricator to make
a 1 foot square grate that also fits into
the receiver. It makes a nice step for getting
into the camper.

As an aside, the hitch extender (for the rack)
sleeves into the step.

My bike rack rocks back and forth when in place.
So I added a couple of 1" angle iron braces to stabilize it.

Smith Falls is 70 feet high. You got that in Wisconsin?

And there is also the Norden Chute where I could have been killed. No lie.

Big Manitou Falls is 165 feet. Very nice.

I met up w/a life long friend and we tootled along the dirt roads looking at (mostly)dormant farms and the “sugar to shit” homes along the way. The Kingdom isn’t as tar paper/plastic wrap happy as i remembered it to be. We would like to travel to all 251 towns in VT. Our back yard is our magic carpet to try out navigational skills. The Atlas I used seemed backwards to me- turning it upside down worked until it didn’t lol. We saw some country- (literally!) and I was home in time for chores.

Good company rocks- and married good company- rocks even more… have a safe and blessed adventure. We’re hitting the road!! I hope you’ll still take sunrise pictures. I’m excited!

I’ll just say- a GMC would have a smoother ride. The body of our Sierra wouldn’t pass inspection after she turned 11. The motor was great- 170,000miles. That’s a lot for us, believe me!!

Meade said...

Can’t wait.
We’re in the camper right now, top popped up, reading our phones, after skiing all around Lord Nelson State Park. Owls are hooting, geese honking. Feels like 23 F outside. Warm in here. Toasty warm cuddled up next to Woman.

I spent the first months with my truck sitting in the back; designing, building, and installing shelves for my outings. Neighbors thought I was weird (they weren't wrong).

Make sure you find room for a small telescope.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

I didn't realize until recently, that you can see Andromeda galaxy, our closest galaxy neighbor, with a naked eye. (moonless conditions in winter for best results)

That's a goal now.

Original Mike said...

Cheese - Winter isn't important but the moon below the horizon is. Schedule your attempts when Andromeda is at an altitude of 45-degrees above the horizon or greater (60-degrees is better). Most important of all are dark skies so get out into the country, though once you learn to identify M31 it's surprising how much light pollution you can tolerate. The biggest obstacle is usually understanding what you're looking at. Observing with an experienced friend will assure success in short order, though it may be more fun to do it without help; that will take patience.

I have had a goal for several years now of observing nearby M33 (the Triangulum Galaxy) with the naked eye. It's just at the edge of detection. I have pretty much assured myself that it is not possible (at least with my eyes) in the Midwest with our humidity and low elevation. All the personal accounts I've heard of success have in common that the observer was a few thousand feet above sea level. I keep trying.

We have a 2013 Pleasure Way Excel, 20.5' Class B motor home built on a 2012 Ford E350 Chassis. I put a 2" hitch on the front for the bikes. Today I almost finished replacing the 100 AmpHr Battery with a US made 270 AmpHr LiPO Battle Born battery. We'll be sure to wave at you if we pass each other on the back roads.

Looks really economical compared to the motorhome land yachts I see on the road and in camper parks down here (FL panhandle) for the snowbird season.

Original Mike said...

Forgot perhaps the most important thing when trying a naked eye observation of Andromeda; dark adapted eyes. Averted vision can help if it's on the edge of detection but under good conditions it's easily seen with direct vision (i.e. looking directly at it).
