"Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., in 1970, he was the only son of Arnett Simmons and Joe Barker. Barker left, leaving Simmons — a teenager — to raise her child alone in Yonkers. She struggled with how to raise a Black son amid the poverty of the School Street projects, and subjected him to outrageous abuse. In a 2019 interview with GQ, Simmons recounted being beaten so badly by Arnett that she knocked his teeth out; he was 6 years old. The mistreatment cloaked his life in almost total, grinding fear.... The abuse begot criminal and antisocial behavior — Simmons once stabbed another kid in the face with a pencil — which in turn triggered more abuse. One summer, trying to discipline Simmons, Arnett locked him in his bedroom for months. He was allowed to leave only for bathroom breaks. In 1983, Arnett effectively severed their relationship when she took him to the Children’s Village group home on the pretense that they were just visiting. It was a trick: She left him there. 'Right then and there... I learned to just put away, conceal, bury whatever bothered me. End of story. I think another side of me was born right there, that enabled me to protect myself.'"

really sad
The abuse begot criminal and antisocial behavior
That's the incorrect "blank slate" answer, but variance in criminality is mostly genetic - he inherited his mother's (and father's?) propensity for abuse and violence.
In my, admittedly limited, experience listening to rap music, I've come away with the impression than seething with anger and expressing said anger is not much of a problem for these guys. Also, it seems that his anger should be directed at his utterly worthless parents. It is a sad story all around.
" She struggled with how to raise a Black son amid the poverty of the School Street projects,"
" She struggled with how to raise a son." is the sentence, the rest is propaganda.
"Along with the rapper's 15 children.... The decision to take him off life support lies with Arnett."
If it's genetic like Fredandethelstein claims, than blacks need help to overcome their extra obstacles. It also is prima facie evidence of White Privilege. No one chooses the circumstances of their birth, therefore those less fortunate due to no fault of their own deserve more compassion and help from the richest country in the entire history of the world.
Instead you people want to shit on them at every opportunity to artificially inflate your low self esteem. Science explains that you act with cruelty because you are at the bottom level of White Privilege. Likely genetic Scotch Irish white trash lacking Scandinavian heritage no doubt.

So, what would you do, Moneybags? Let's take Bill Gates. What should Bill Gates do to eliminate the benefits of his white privilege, not in Africa, but right here in the USA. You have a lot of good ideas, right? What are they? What should Bill Gates be made to do, Genius?
From Wikipedia:
DMX was the father of 15 children from 9 different women...
DMX earned $2.3 million from his songs between 2010 and 2015...
DMX was in jail 30 times for various offenses, including robbery, assault, carjacking, animal cruelty, reckless driving, driving under the influence, unlicensed driving, drug possession, probation violation, failure to pay child support, pretending to be a federal agent, and tax evasion.
This guy was a social deviant who did OK financially from the freedom afforded him in our great country. I'd say he exploited his hard upbringing, but then according to Howard, I'm just white trash.
I don't know what Howard thinks he himself is.
"[T]he pain that Black men rarely get to air" would appear, on this narrative, to be mostly caused by other Black people.
@Howard: Instead you people want to shit on them at every opportunity to artificially inflate your low self esteem.
If there are that many shittings upon, perhaps you could provide some direct examples.
George Floyd couldn't be reached for comment, Skipper.
Mom made me do it.
LOL.
Bud: I know a life of crime has led me to this sorry fate, and yet, I blame society. Society made me what I am.
Otto Maddox: That's bullshit. You're a white suburban punk just like me.
Bud: Yeah, but it still hurts.
We only get half the story. WHat was he doing that led his mother to this harsh disclipline and finally to get rid of him?
'She struggled with how to raise a Black son amid the poverty of the School Street projects, and subjected him to outrageous abuse.'
And just think how tough it would have been were he a white kid.
His mother was a horrible human being, and his father wasn't around.
The 'black community' needs to spend almost all of their efforts on getting parents married before kids are born.
And the other effort should be keeping them married.
Those two things would erase most of the poverty and disfunction.
That, and stop voting for democrats...
Wasn't that a 1957 movie? "I'm depraved on account I'm deprived!" (Officer Krumpke).
The remake: I'm accountable for the choices I make?
"We only get half the story. WHat was he doing that led his mother to this harsh disclipline and finally to get rid of him?"
Harsh discipline? It was abuse and torture. There is no misbehavior a child can do that warrants such treatment and eventually abandonment.
"the kind of pain Black men rarely get to air in public"
Even more rare is publicly airing the kind of pain inflicted by Black men.
The story goes to offensive lengths to minimize his mother's responsibility. Absolutely, his father was a terrible human being for abandoning him, and sure, racism in society would have made the burden harder, but obviously, the vast majority of single Black mothers raise their kids without resorting to that kind of abuse. Presumably she'd been an abuse victim as a child herself, though, too.
Simmons' black father left him because of white privilege. Simmons' mother beat him because of white privilege. He can't air his pain in public because of white privilege.
If there were no white privilege, Simmons would he happy and alive.
Yeah, that's the ticket.
@Howard: George Floyd couldn't be reached for comment, Skipper.
In other words, you got nuffin.
Figures.
That's right Joe Smith. The Black community needs to bootstrap themselves out of slavery, Jim Crow, lynching, segregation and the ghetto.
Skip thinks the BLM response to Floyd was "nothing".
My heart breaks for all children subjected to abuse and abandonment. I wish I could mother them all.
What a really sad, horrifying story. Unfortunately, it's not unique. And certainly not unique to Blacks.
Howard the Troll's recent blivot...
"Science explains that you act with cruelty because you are at the bottom level of White Privilege. Likely genetic Scotch Irish white trash lacking Scandinavian heritage no doubt."
But White Trash lives also matter!
"Show off your white trash pride with this Old Glory design printed on a high-quality 100% cotton, crew neck, classic fitted, short sleeve adult t-shirt."

His net worth at death was reported to be negative 1 million dollars. Those 15 sprog and other assorted hangers-on didn't win the ghetto lottery this time.
Guy was lucky to make it to 50. Join NA and go to church, even of you don't 100% believe, and stay off the drugs.
And for the rest of us: it's not about Blacks or Whites. It's about humans. Not seeing that is part of the problem.
