He tells a story of working as a security guard at an outdoor amphitheater when he was a teenager and quitting the night Neil Young played — not because he didn't like Neil Young but because people in the audience were making bonfires to keep warm and not taking kindly to the security guards who were required to put out the fires. Joe put a regular shirt over his security guard shirt and walked away.

I don't think Joe should try to get guests with opposing views on at the same time in an effort to appear balanced. I think it speaks very well about Joe Rogan that he is a liberal who conservatives love to listen to. It tells you that he already has a good sense of "balance".
We've heard criticism for years about our shallow, sound bite news media and how subjects are never covered in depth. Well podcasting is answering the desire of people to have more information and a deeper understanding.
Podcasting's popularity shows that the condescending stereotype of the shallow, uninterested, uncurious, happy to be ignorant American news consumer is bull. It's just that for a long time soundbite news was all that was available. Talk radio answered the demand, however imperfectly. Now it's podcasting.
Wow, as far as I'm concerned, Rogan's public statement was 9 minutes and 43 seconds of pure "winning". He sounded sincere, authentic and rational. He explained that he's just a guy with the gift of entertaining gab who's curious about all sorts of things. I did appreciate his singing the Neil Young lyric "keep on rockin' in the free world" ...duh, that says it all.

Rogan did not set out to stir the pot. He just talked about current events. Near as I can tell from reporting(or rather what the reporting never says) All Rogan did was repeat the very early conversations ALL people had about what the virus protocols meant and what were we (govt)trying to accomplish.
All Rogan did was ask, "what science exactly are they (govt experts) basing their recommendations? He never started out calling them wrong, just asking how did they get there?
To answer his own question, he found interesting experts to interview and have them tell Rogan and his audience the controlling science, and how that squared with the CDC, etal.
And fun began. Notice everybody is slamming Rogan, I fail to find any person taking on the experts, Rogan gave an audience.
A quick example is masks. This subject has been in the conversation for? 30-40 years? We always saw pictures of the masses in Tokyo with lots of masked people. So we asked, why don't we see the same here in the US. We always had the same answers.
Masks are of questionable efficacy in the hands of the untrained especially for anything more than an hour or two. And then, slows the spread of viruses, only if worn by the infected. But in the end, you can't stop a virus.
So the people mad at Rogan, are mad at him, for asking the question asked by all of us. Not the answers being discussed.
Joe is just being himself. That's why he's so successful. Remember, he's a liberal progressive pothead who likes to drink whiskey, workout, fight and hunt.

I think it's safe to say most people can't stand Alex Jones. For whatever reason.
When Rogan had Jones on his podcast, most people tuned in to watch the train wreck. Half hour into it, twitter was afire "You gotta watch this! Funny as hell!" Afterwards I didn't see a single person that didn't echo the sentiment "That was the most entertaining 3 hours I've ever seen". I didn't see many that said they changed their views of Alex Jones. Just that it was highly entertaining. That's what Rogan is about, and why he's so popular.
And yes, that was the first Rogan podcast Spotify deleted from the archive. 42 deleted podcasts to date.

As others have already noted, Rogan is just a guy asking good questions of interesting guests and trying to figure out what’s going on. He has no agenda, and those who accuse him of it are admitting they know nothing about Rogan without realizing it.
The importance of this distinction is amplified many times by this: he is wildly popular among the under 35-40 crowd, like, unimaginably huge and powerful. Millions and millions of listeners, every show, way more than watch Fox News or CNN or anything like that. That battle for hearts and minds is over for that age cohort, and bitching about it is a waste of breath and pixels.

Listen more carefully. Rogan wasn’t offering it as an excuse for anything. He was suggesting that spontaneity is one of the reasons his podcasts appeal to and interest his listeners. What’s your excuse for getting that wrong?

Looks like the executives ARE trying to stop the controversy. Another nail in the free speech coffin. So, exactly what made Rogan so attractive to listeners, is now being tamped down by the corporate executives at Spotify. All these guys walk in lockstep. What a bunch of wusses!

Now, if the Duke and Duchess of Montecito announce they are leaving Spotify, well then that would be BIG news. But, this is their perfect out. Since they have NOTHING, why not use this Covid/Rogan controversy as a reason that they cannot be associated with Spotify?

That is some real good people sense from Rogan there. He senses that he is right now at his strongest because Spotify is baking him and the majority of people view Niel Young and Joni Mitchell's actions as an attack and bullying. Rogan doesn't play up the victim status but he doesn't swing back either because then people might start to feel he is the aggressor. Rogan has very good people sense. It would be a very useful skill in politics.
He should point to his aggressive interview with Candace Owens to get some Lib luvin' back.

My mind today, oddly, keeps comparing Joe Rogan and Walter Cronkite. I don't know why. Perhaps just reflecting on how wildly the landscape has changed in fifty years.
So, I noticed on Instapundit that SiriusXM created a Neil Young channel today. So I called them up and told them that since they were celebrating Neil Young's attempts at censorship, I was going to "censor" them and drop my subscription, while keeping the Spotify subscription
It took about 10 "no thank you"s, but I managed to get my account cancelled with SiriusXM.
As it cost about 3x as much as the Spotify subscription, it's a definite win for me

When Rogan says: " I love Joni Mitchell, I love her music, 'Chuck E.'s in Love is a great song'" I hope he's doing that on purpose.

Rogan was trying to be gracious and he made a mistake.
Joe Rogan has a great sense of humor and he can (and does) say a lot of shit about people, and rag on people, and make fun of people. But that video he did? That was (obviously) not making fun of anybody. He was being completely sincere in the video. That's the way I took it.

Edit: I just realized “chuckie’s in love” is Ricky Lee Jones not Joni Mitchell. Doh!
It was an accident, not intentional. He is a spontaneous guy. Rogan doesn't plan or organize his show. I don't think he has editors. It's a live show. It's not super-polished. And his Instagram is even less so. So mistakes are going to happen.
How does Rogan explain his having Alex Jones on? Not once, not twice; but three (or more?!?) times.
He believe in having conversations with all sorts of people, across the political spectrum, and not shutting people up. He believes in free speech.
And unlike you, he doesn't pretend to be something he's not.
Back in my the 60s and 70s, AM radio disc jockeys would do publicity stunts. Mitchell, Rogan and Young are doing the same thing but updated.
That doesn't make sense, though. Why do a publicity stunt while simultaneously cutting off your distribution network? That would be stupid. If Young is doing this to sell records he's even dumber then his attempt to silence those right-wingers.
I wonder if Young even listens to the podcast. I can't imagine listening to a Joe Rogan podcast for three hours and then thinking, "I got to shut this down." My guess is that Young is operating in ignorance here, like Joni Mitchell.
But I definitely disagree that this is a publicity stunt. Spotify wouldn't like being the brunt of the joke. Rogan is clearly trying to put out a fire. And Mitchell and Young hurt their own business. To me this looks like an actual conflict that damages everybody involved (with the exception of Rogan, who will probably have more listeners because of this, not less).
I bet that Neil Young will be on Joe Rogan's show sometime this year.
