Joe Rogan: This podcast is "nothing that I've prepared for." It's become "some out-of-control juggernaut I barely have control of."

He never even had the idea of becoming this successful with the podcast. It started with him "just fucking around with my friends and having fun and talking, and then, when it became popular, other people wanted to come on," he says in this 10-minute message to the world.

He says he's going to "do my best, in the future, to balance things out."

"But my point of doing this is just to create interesting conversations.... So, if I've pissed you off, I'm sorry. If you enjoy the podcast, thank you... Thank you to all the supporters, and even thank you to the haters, because it's good to have some haters. It makes you reassess what you're doing and put things into perspective... Thank you and, uh, I'm going to do my best."

He says multiple times that he has no hard feelings against Neil Young, that he loves Neil Young. He tells a story of working as a security guard at an outdoor amphitheater when he was a teenager and quitting the night Neil Young played — not because he didn't like Neil Young but because people in the audience were making bonfires to keep warm and not taking kindly to the security guards who were required to put out the fires. Joe put a regular shirt over his security guard shirt and walked away.

***

Hey, Neil Young, go on Joe Rogan's podcast. He's offered you love. Return the gesture.

***

ADD: Rogan has offered Young a graceful way out of the hole he climbed down into and that only Joni Mitchell and Nils Lofgren jumped in after. It wasn't the lemmingfest he might have hoped for.

This is apt:

OR: Do you think Joe is trying to con us? Are you thinking all the thank yous and love and me and my friends were just fooling around are some kind of trick?

IN THE COMMENTS: Lucien says (correctly quoting Rogan, who I'm sure was doing it on purpose):

When Rogan says: "I love Joni Mitchell, I love her music, 'Chuck E.'s in Love' is a great song" I hope he's doing that on purpose.

Rogan is old school, like the talk show hosts from back in the days of free speech. Donahue had Milton Freidman and Ayn Rand. Oprah had on real white supremacists. They’d both be gone…

He'd never go on. The covidiots would cancel him for supporting heresy. Can't have independent thoughts, you know. Wouldn't be right and would likely kill a lot of people. At least that's what I'm told. Don't know how I survived without a mask and or lock down here in FL for the last 18 months. Just lucky I guess.

It won't happen. Progressives hold on to their hate. I lost many friends in the last couple of years, and it was their progressivism that wouldn't let them be friends with people who think differently then they do. There is too much hate inside of them. Trump broke them.

Joe Rogan is great because he plays the role of an average “Joe” trying to figure this mess of a world out. The left has, essentially, bullied into a position where he now appears to take positions from the right. It’s far less complicated than that. He’s simply trying to talk to folks to make some sense out of the world and very little that’s coming from the left makes sense to him. In that way, he’s reflecting the way most Americans feel. And, also in that way, he’s exposing the left to its own failure and that’s also exposing an immense authoritarian streak. In fact, it’s as if the American left has played “democracy” since the 1930 and is finally tired of waiting for authoritarian control.

Barry Manilow didn't get the joke either as I saw a tweet from him wondering why he was suddenly seeing tweets that he joined Young in leaving Spotify when he'd done nothing of the sort. That was funny, but also sad as he didn't realize that he was being insulted.

No way. In the early days he only had on his friends- the comics and the mma guys. He earned respect for the long form and the treatment if his guests- no being cut off by the host…and he does his homework. So, he caught on with the intellects with something to say and no place to say it..

It's become "some juggernaut I barely have control of"

I think that's what success feels like at a certain stage and it's a crucial stage where you can figure it out and adapt or you can retreat to your old comfort zone. Success doesn't mean suddenly you're on easy street. Usually just the opposite.

He says he's going to "do my best, in the future, to balance things out."

Why does Joe Rogan have to balance things out? The corporate media doesn't. The Woke don't. The authorities don't. The Pharma companies don't. Joe Rogan is balance to all those voices singing the same song. That's why he has success, IMO.
But okay. Joe has good intentions. I hope he doesn't mean that he'll just be more politically correct or try not to piss anyone off. The people who want to cancel him won't thank him for more "balance". They won't be satisfied by that. They don't want balance. To them this is weakness. It's blood in the water. Could you have avoided the noose in Salem by promising to balance witchcraft with more churchgoing?
The Corporate media sees Joe and other independent voices as a threat and they should. If they can get him to toe the line people will stop listening. But Joe can't say all that out loud without playing into the effort to make him seem like an Alex Jones.

As has been stated above, Joe Rogan is a man of the Left. Or the Center-Left. He didn't suddenly turn right. The Left not-so-suddenly got so far down field into crazy totalitarian Leftism- just itching to be more like Pol Pot than John F. Kennedy- that people like Joe Rogan, Bill Maher, Bari Weiss, lifelong Democrats all, suddenly sound Conservative to the far far lefties.

He's just trying to offer the information that the junior Pol Potters have worked so hard to keep off of Twitter, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, et. al. Joe is playing with a $100 million contract that he does not want to fuck up. Spotify is trying to balance all things going on. But everyone is getting stained with this bullshit.

I, personally, won't forget or forgive those who are so adamantly in favor of censorship, of denying the information because they'd rather back the Official Government Narrative.

They've fallen so far from the courageous young people they used to see themselves as, fighting The Man and The Power. They are now The Man. And The Man is not wearing any clothes. It will not be a good ending.

It's become "some juggernaut I barely have control of"

This is the difference between an organic bottom up movement and a corporate top down movement.

Trump feels the same way.

The truck protest in Canada is another example. There are no politicians that know how to get in front of that because it is antithetical to their very existence.

This is boiling up now. People want truth and they want freedom.

The masses are speaking and the aristocracy is trying to clamp down.

But the end is near.

Bob Boyd said...

I don't think Joe should try to get guests with opposing views on at the same time in an effort to appear balanced. That would be adopting the formula of all the other "news" shows where people just argue and yell pointlessly at one another. Nobody leans anything that way. It just spikes the audience's blood pressure, confirms them in their beliefs and makes them hate the other side. Personally, I find that format unwatchable.

Bob Boyd said...

I think it speaks very well about Joe Rogan that he is a liberal who conservatives love to listen to. It tells you that he already has a good sense of "balance".

We've heard criticism for years about our shallow, sound bite news media and how subjects are never covered in depth. Well podcasting is answering the desire of people to have more information and a deeper understanding.
Podcasting's popularity shows that the condescending stereotype of the shallow, uninterested, uncurious, happy to be ignorant American news consumer is bull. It's just that for a long time soundbite news was all that was available. Talk radio answered the demand, however imperfectly. Now it's podcasting.

Wow, as far as I'm concerned, Rogan's public statement was 9 minutes and 43 seconds of pure "winning". He sounded sincere, authentic and rational. Rogan did not set out to stir the pot. He just talked about current events. Near as I can tell from reporting(or rather what the reporting never says) All Rogan did was repeat the very early conversations ALL people had about what the virus protocols meant and what were we (govt)trying to accomplish.

All Rogan did was ask, "what science exactly are they (govt experts) basing their recommendations? He never started out calling them wrong, just asking how did they get there?

To answer his own question, he found interesting experts to interview and have them tell Rogan and his audience the controlling science, and how that squared with the CDC, etal.

And fun began. Notice everybody is slamming Rogan, I fail to find any person taking on the experts, Rogan gave an audience.

A quick example is masks. This subject has been in the conversation for? 30-40 years? We always saw pictures of the masses in Tokyo with lots of masked people. So we asked, why don't we see the same here in the US. We always had the same answers.
Masks are of questionable efficacy in the hands of the untrained especially for anything more than an hour or two. And then, slows the spread of viruses, only if worn by the infected. But in the end, you can't stop a virus.

So the people mad at Rogan, are mad at him, for asking the question asked by all of us. Not the answers being discussed.

As Nasty As They Wanna Be was cited as pornographic material and went on trial in the Spring of 1990 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. In response to this (and the Tipper Gore-led Parents Music Resource Center warning labels), Neil Young wrote a song titled "F*!#in' Up" - that's the official title. Once he was all about "Freedom."

There's no reason for Rogan to attack his liberal boomer musical friends. Except for CV-19 and a few other minor issues, they're on the same side. Young, Mitchell, etc were just indulging in the typical leftist "one strike and you're out, heretic" behavior.

But now that Spotify has stood firm, and the Leftist "party leaders" who put out the "party line" haven't jumped in, this will all blow over. The thought leaders made the decision NOT to destroy Rogan. If they'd put the word out, all the other lefty musicians would've bailed, and Rogan would've been cancelled. But the Big Boys didn't care. They like Rogan. So, he survived on Spotify.

And Big Tech didn't care either. If Google, Twitter, facebook, Apple decide to cancel Joe Rogan, it will be Goodby Joe. But he's safe. For Now.

The importance of this distinction is amplified many times by this: he is wildly popular among the under 35-40 crowd, like, unimaginably huge and powerful. Millions and millions of listeners, every show, way more than watch Fox News or CNN or anything like that. That battle for hearts and minds is over for that age cohort, and bitching about it is a waste of breath and pixels.

They have seen what honest inquiry looks like, they like it, they’re not giving it up, and it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference what Joni Mitchell says, because they don’t even know who she is!

Looks like the executives ARE trying to stop the controversy. Another nail in the free speech coffin. So, exactly what made Rogan so attractive to listeners, is now being tamped down by the corporate executives at Spotify. All these guys walk in lockstep. What a bunch of wusses!

As Rogan recently noted, what is conventional wisdom now would have gotten one banned a year ago.

Now, if the Duke and Duchess of Montecito announce they are leaving Spotify, well then that would be BIG news. But, this is their perfect out. Since they have NOTHING, why not use this Covid/Rogan controversy as a reason that they cannot be associated with Spotify?

Greg The Class Traitor: "So, Mark, you're saying you're so stupid you can't see a difference between "deciding what's appropriate to teach 8th graders" and "deciding what American adults will be allowed to listen to"?

That's really some major league stupid you've got going there"

It is impossible not to notice Dumb Lefty Mark is dumb....and a lefty.

That is some real good people sense from Rogan there. He senses that he is right now at his strongest because Spotify is baking him and the majority of people view Niel Young and Joni Mitchell's actions as an attack and bullying. Rogan doesn't play up the victim status but he doesn't swing back either because then people might start to feel he is the aggressor. Rogan has very good people sense. It would be a very useful skill in politics.

He should point to his aggressive interview with Candace Owens to get some Lib luvin' back.

John,
Which Doctor, Malone or McCullough would you like to correct?
I mean, maybe we could set something up for you.
Perhaps a three way.

So Bob, you are saying his haters are just like the majority of people who recently weighed in on Maus here?

No. I must have missed that conversation. What's a Maus? I remember talking about Katz.

My mind today, oddly, keeps comparing Joe Rogan and Walter Cronkite. I don't know why. Perhaps just reflecting on how wildly the landscape has changed in fifty years.

So, I noticed on Instapundit that SiriusXM created a Neil Young channel today. So I called them up and told them that since they were celebrating Neil Young's attempts at censorship, I was going to "censor" them and drop my subscription, while keeping the Spotify subscription

It took about 10 "no thank you"s, but I managed to get my account cancelled with SiriusXM.

As it cost about 3x as much as the Spotify subscription, it's a definite win for me

Joe is very gracious in that statement.

When Rogan says: " I love Joni Mitchell, I love her music, 'Chuck E.'s in Love is a great song'" I hope he's doing that on purpose.

Why? You hate Joni Mitchell?

Rogan was trying to be gracious and he made a mistake.

Joe Rogan has a great sense of humor and he can (and does) say a lot of shit about people, and rag on people, and make fun of people. But that video he did? That was (obviously) not making fun of anybody. He was being completely sincere in the video. That's the way I took it.

He added an edit to his Instagram clip.

Edit: I just realized “chuckie’s in love” is Ricky Lee Jones not Joni Mitchell. Doh!

It was an accident, not intentional. He is a spontaneous guy. Rogan doesn't plan or organize his show. I don't think he has editors. It's a live show. It's not super-polished. And his Instagram is even less so. So mistakes are going to happen.

How does Rogan explain his having Alex Jones on? Not once, not twice; but three (or more?!?) times.

He believe in having conversations with all sorts of people, across the political spectrum, and not shutting people up. He believes in free speech.

And unlike you, he doesn't pretend to be something he's not.

Back in my the 60s and 70s, AM radio disc jockeys would do publicity stunts. Mitchell, Rogan and Young are doing the same thing but updated.

That doesn't make sense, though. Why do a publicity stunt while simultaneously cutting off your distribution network? That would be stupid. If Young is doing this to sell records he's even dumber then his attempt to silence those right-wingers.

I wonder if Young even listens to the podcast. I can't imagine listening to a Joe Rogan podcast for three hours and then thinking, "I got to shut this down." My guess is that Young is operating in ignorance here, like Joni Mitchell.

But I definitely disagree that this is a publicity stunt. Spotify wouldn't like being the brunt of the joke. Rogan is clearly trying to put out a fire. And Mitchell and Young hurt their own business. To me this looks like an actual conflict that damages everybody involved (with the exception of Rogan, who will probably have more listeners because of this, not less).

I bet that Neil Young will be on Joe Rogan's show sometime this year.
