It looks like Althouse has very nearly found the magic spot that aligns the Sun, the State House dome, and the lens with the winter solstice.

Who is the best Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol" films? For my money, George C. Scott killed in the 1984 version.

What did Potter do with the $8K?

I'm riffing on an occasional column series by George Hesselberg (Madisonians will recognize the name), called Dr. Know-It-All:

“Dr. Know-It-All, the guy who put 'practice' into 'practitioner,' (and we know that only perfect practice makes perfect), is back from a siesta in warmer climes, Des Moines, that is, to answer rhetorical questions to the best of his awesome perspicacity.

Dear Dr. KIA: We were told some months ago that all we needed to do was “flatten the curve” by self-isolating, mask wearing, physical distancing (ain't nothing 'social' about it) and getting vaccinated. But the bug is still spreading, mutating and even people who have gotten the shot are still catching the bug and spreading it. How come?

Dr. KIA: I don't know.

Dear Dr. KIA: I keep hearing that our mayor and city council are doing their darndest to combat racism and recidivism in our public schools in this town. So how is it that school kids, on campus and off, are getting into huge fights, stealing cars, and so on? Weren't the people we elected supposed to do something about all this?

Dr. KIA: I don't know.

Hey Doc KIA: I signed up for that fancy healthcare.gov website a few years back because it was the thing to do if I wanted to keep my doctor. About a year and a half ago, I went with Medicare because I turned 65, because it was the thing to do. So why do I still get reminders from that fancy dancy website that I need to sign up for new coverage through healthcare.gov?

Dr. KIA: I don't know. Maybe call the toll free number?"

I knew these would be amazing photos today when I saw the sun rising over Lake Michigan when walking the pups this morning. Great cloud formations and colors. I pointed them out but the pups didn't care.

Alastair Sim, 1951. Hands down.

Those pix make me envious--of the setting and the talent. Sometimes I just stare.

Mr. Potter had a yuge coke and hookers habit, but that was in the days of the Code and only implied in the movie.

No vote on Scrooge. I'm such a Scrooge I don't like ACC, or much of Dickens. There are no holiday movie traditions in my family, not even A Christmas Story now that most of the real fans are gone.

We had a late Native American Summer here for the last two days. For the first time in weeks I had a light sweat and the dog's tongue was lolling out after our midday mile walk.

The tornadoes will freshen things up by morning, say the experts.

Albert Finney in "Scrooge". Runner-up, Jim Backus doing Mr. Magoo in "Magoo's Christmas Carol" (DePathe-Freleng?)

Original Mike: I’m with y’a on Alastair sim. I watch that one whenever it’s broadcast. Mr Magoo also lays claim to the deepest recesses of my Christmases past.

This is correct.

I saw the play last night.

It was very woke. Scrooge was black, as was Fred, Tiny Tim, etc.

The music was good, but the dialog was all yelling.

It was a constant yelling of the lines. No subtlety, no finesse.

I get it, Scrooge was an asshole. But my ears couldn't take it.

I still see stories suggesting that Darryl Brooks (who accompanied the out-of-control SUV in the Waukesha parade massacre) was a black nationalist acting on convictions. So I just want to point out that the SUV (and Darryl Brooks) began their day by visiting Brooks former girl friend - the one whom the red SUV (and Brooks) ran over a few weeks before. The SUV (and Darryl Brooks) broke her ankle and she called the police and got him put away. But John Soros-Chisholm DA released him and so the SUV and Darryl Brooks went to see this unfortunate woman again - perhaps to offer marriage, perhaps to suggest she drop the charges against him. In calls from jail to her he had covered both these topics but there was more to say. And then she called the police again and Darryl Brooks rushed off, turned into and drove through the parade. Now to me, the SUV-and-Darryl's treatment of this unfortunate woman on that day isn't how you start a black nationalist propaganda action.
And as we know the SUV had no plan of escape after running over children and grandmothers but simply parked itself a few blocks away where it was immediately found by the police. And Darryl Brooks had no plan either except to call Uber since the SUV had parked itself and he was also immediately found.
Does this sound like a plan coming together?
No, this was a Milwaukee guy - a pure product of the schools, the welfare system and the criminal justice system. Look at how he acted. And the SUV was just as bad. How right BLM was to call for reform. But now, a reform that consists in putting a dangerous SUV back on the streets because root causes have made the SUV dangerous isn't going to reform our town and its SUVs much better than the unreformed root causes. And the same for the people.

This. A million times this.

The answer is so unquestionably "Alastair Sim" that the proper way to ask the question is "Who was the second-best Ebenezer Scrooge after Alastair Sim"

BTW, I just read A Christmas Carol. The Alastair Sim version is extremely faithful to the book. Pretty much word for word. Probably one of the reasons the movie works so well.

Steel cut oats cook great in a rice cooker. Prep time under a minute push the button, breakfast ready when you get out of the shower. Slice in a banana and pour on some maple syrup. I think I am going to call it "bachelor chow."

Jim Backus was the best Scrooge. He was the category killer in that role.

Certainly true in Pottersville! Violet says (when picked up in a raid); "I know Potter!
I'm not sure about in boring old Bedford Falls.
George Baily seemed to have taken All the life out of that town.
If you compare Pottersville to Bedford Falls; you can clearly see which one America wanted
It's the one we have!

Admit it, Clarence–Bedford Falls is better off without George Bailey.

The thing that really sends Bailey reeling is the image of his Building and Loan replaced by a "Jitterbug" club, which I imagine is 1940s burlesque spot. Bailey's modest family business (which really fucked over the entire town of Bedford Falls in the other dimension of the film) has transformed into a glamorous, sexually-liberated fun-zone. Violet, the film's most sexually-liberated character, apparently performs there. Good for Violet. She deserved better than these squares.

Alistair Sim was the classic version our parents wanted us to watch, but it was nice when our teachers arranged a trip to the movie theater to see Albert Finney's version. Jollier and not so dark. That year or thereabouts, they had us watch George C. Scott in "Jane Eyre" on TV. That's the classic version of that story for me.

Raining heavily here now.
