My hypothesis: The Bidens deliberately froze Kamala Harris's political career.

I'm reading this CNN article — "Exasperation and dysfunction: Inside Kamala Harris' frustrating start as vice president" — and reading between the lines.

Read it yourself. It's very long. Too long to excerpt adequately. But let me know what you think. My hypothesis is based, first, on a belief that Jill Biden hated the way Harris treated her husband in that first debate. Let me cherry pick from the CNN article and quote just the things that reinforce my suspicion that the Bidens want to disable Harris:
Many in the vice president's circle fume that she's not being adequately prepared or positioned, and instead is being sidelined. The vice president herself has told several confidants she feels constrained in what she's able to do politically. And those around her remain wary of even hinting at future political ambitions, with Biden's team highly attuned to signs of disloyalty, particularly from the vice president....
She could be just a year away from launching a presidential campaign of her own, given doubts throughout the political world that Biden will actually go through with a reelection bid in 2024, something he's pledged to do publicly and privately....

She can't start running unless and until he says he won't run. She can't compete with him.

Harris is struggling with a rocky relationship with some parts of the White House, while long-time supporters feel abandoned and see no coherent public sense of what she's done or been trying to do as vice president.... Defenders and people who care for Harris are getting frantic. When they're annoyed, some pass around a recent Onion story mocking her lack of more substantive work, one with the headline, "White House Urges Kamala Harris To Sit At Computer All Day In Case Emails Come Through."...

She's perceived to be in such a weak position that top Democrats in and outside of Washington have begun to speculate privately, asking each other why the White House has allowed her to become so hobbled in the public consciousness, at least as they see it....

My hypothesis is that the Bidens want her not just hobbled but utterly deactivated.

A few more things:

When Biden picked Harris as his running mate, he was essentially anointing her as the future of the Democratic Party. Now many of those close to her feel like he's shirking his political duties to promote her, and essentially setting her up to fail. Her fans are panicked, watching her poll numbers sink even lower than Biden's, worrying that even the base Democratic vote is starting to give up on her....
Suspicion has sprouted out of the bitterness. Last month, White House aides leapt to the defense of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who was being hammered with outrage by Fox News host Tucker Carlson and like-minded online pundits for taking paternity leave after the adoption of his twins in September. Harris loyalists tell CNN they see in that yet another example of an unfair standard at play, wondering why she didn't get similar cover any of the times she's been attacked by the right....
Buttigieg... is a likely challenger for the next open Democratic presidential nomination, whether that comes in 2024 or 2028....
Several Biden campaign aides spoke of putting "a blanket" around Harris after she was picked as the running mate last year, and advised against bringing on staff from her presidential campaign, though the final decisions around hires and structure were left at her discretion. That's left her with just a handful of current aides who knew her before she was vice president-elect, and they don't know her well....
In and around Harris' circle, they speculate that there must be someone getting in her way.
Some think it's the President himself leaving her out in the cold, prioritizing his own agenda. Some blame specific West Wing aides whom they feel sure are out to undercut her...

I think there's a lot of merit to your old assessment that Harris is the choice of Democratic insiders and the Biden candidacy was intended to be no more than a vehicle to get her into the White House after the primary electorate rejected her. Everything was going according to plan until Team Biden, which may be led by Jill Biden, decided they liked being the ones in power and were in no hurry to give it up.

It's an age-old corruption story. The patsy decided to stop being a patsy and screwed up the careful plans of the people holding the levers behind the curtain. A bit like the old Kevin Kline movie Dave.

Harris has always been a non-starter with no political future outside of California. This was tested and proven in her Primary failure. So why do people care so much about her? Is it just racism and sexism driving her...to be the first in her cohort?

What is all this blathering? No one likes her; no one black or white liked her in the primary. He picked her because she checked the right boxes. He doesn't need her now. She certainly doesn't need him any more - no one does. The rest of us don't need either of them.

That makes perfect sense. If you have a President this close to the 25th Amendment threshold (if not outright over it), you don't want a viable alternative waiting in the wings. They are freezing her out so that no one gets the crazy idea of replacing Biden with her. The people advising/controlling Biden like their influence/power to give it up to someone the see as a diversity hire.

Given how fast her 2020 campaign imploded, I have a hard time seeing her even being considered a 2024 possibility if Biden hadn't made her VP. And "everybody knows" that that decision wasn't driven by anyone thinking she'd make a good 2024 Presidential candidate, but because she brought ovaries and melanin to the Biden/[Whomever] ticket.

Harris's core problem isn't anything Biden or his aides are doing. It's that she's never been a good candidate for President.

The top of the entire Democrat party is a pack of corrupt ladder-climbing insiders and outsiders who want to be insiders - it's a shit show. A grand manipulation.

Both parties could save themselves, and the nation - if we could all agree to ditch the insiders.
The insiders cannot be trusted.

Wouldn't it be nice to have candidates on both sides - who were respected and they actually had a platform to express their ideas... and honest debate platforms with honest people debating?

Kamala was an ass on the stage. That she is our VP is a joke. Biden and his family are corrupt - made wealthy by insider deals. And the FBI and the media and big corrupt tech cover it all up.

again - the democrats are a shit show. Untangling it is useless. It needs to be trashed.

Tina Trent said...

Her fans could fit in a phone booth. I don't doubt Jill Biden is out for her, but she and Jill and the DNC have colluded to present Joe Biden as a competent person.

Harris was notoriously unpopular in California. Her book, Right on Crime, is a dishonest snoozer even by the standards of politician prose.

The article, however, actuallly focused on accusations of racism by the Harris camp against both Biden and Buttgeig. Harris, it is claimed, is being given too much hard stuff to do, while Mayor Pete is being coddled.

That's likely true. Gay dads rank higher than women, even half-black women, in the palace of misogyny that is the DNC. But instead of whining, Harris could raise her profile by simply telling the truth about Biden's mental state and doing her damn job. Nobody is making her just answer emails.

Probably Harris's trouble is that she doesn't know who to sleep with.

I suppose Ann's hypothesis deserves a Snopes-style 'somewhat true' but the fact-checking should reveal some truth and context. To state: 'The Biden's deliberately froze Kamala Harris's political carer' assigns an intent and gravitas inappropriate to the actors in the Administration- a ragtag collection of career leftie deep-staters, race hustlers and other political hangers on running the Executive Branch via a dementia-addled President, punching miles above their weight class. They are successfully implementing many of their unpopular policies with the historically bad polling results expected from implementing unpopular polices. They are in a bind. Go back to blaming Trump or find someone else to blame?

For the first 6 months of Biden's term, the media and party RELIGIOUSLY referred to the "Biden-Harris" administration. They saw her as taking over in 4 years or less. If that tagline is gone, then the long knives had their way and that goal is also gone.

The insiders making these decisions are, after all, the very same people who went after Trump with psychopathic glee throughout his term. The left always breaks down when internal ambitions and visions diverge. Change? Yes, but how much change and in which directions? Well, maybe some on the left need to be canceled too?

I smell the moderates regaining their footing in the absence Trump, and are now striking back against the socialist and racial justice wing. AOC and "the Squad" stand to be sidelined for obvious reasons too. Many Republican wins have proven that race isn't the strong driving political force that some want it to be.

My hypothesis: The Bidens deliberately froze Kamala Harris's political career."

This has been a common theme amongst some political chattering classes.

The idea being Biden's Earpiece admin is a throwaway opportunity where the obama-ites who actually run things thru Klain could execute those policies that obama was too hesitant to push thru initially and then lost the opportunity when the R's retook congress.

Biden's Earpiece, in fact, could be pushed even farther left and faster than an obama admin. Kamala was just thrown in to take some of the arrows and mollify the far left base (via identity politics alone) and since she really is the worst political candidate at the national level since....Hillary, she too is expendable as she would never be acceptable to enough of the country to win even tainted elections.

Butti-judge-judge is clearly the heir apparent and some have surmised that the adoptions to normalize his status with his husband along with his midwest white bread looks makes him the best possible option for the follow on phase of what the obama-ites have in store for us and thus his extended paternity leave is designed to keep him distant from all of these inevitable Cloward-Piven actions and give him deniability. 3 months of paternity leave....by the Transportation Secretary....at the height of the biggest purposefully created supply chain crisis in our history? How obvious is that?

If all this is true, and we won't know for some time yet one way or the other, that would explain Team Kamala beginning to lash out publicly to try and box Biden's Earpiece in and to make it impossible to jettison Kamala before Biden's Earpiece moves on out to pasture and they move Butti-judge-judge in as her replacement and then his replacement.

Since Mayor Pete is not technically a woman, it left Joe few options. Kampala it was.

She can start running anytime she wants - but she'll have to resign as VP first. It's both a vote of no-confidence in him, and will cause an unknown amount of political damage as he selects a replacement. For which VP pick has this ever been true? VPs are chosen for many reasons; few of them have ever gone on to be the future of their party. Tim Kaine was the VP pick for 2017, did anyone ever say he was being anointed as the future of the party?

Joe Biden certainly represents the past of the Democratic Party. That's why he was chosen as VP in 2008.

I think your hypothesis is a fair reading of the situation. Except for the fact that Harris's political career was effectively frozen already. Which may not be a huge strike against your hypothesis, but it's worth noting. She had very, very low polling numbers in her presidential run, even in California, and is very unlikable.

They pulled her out of the senate, so that goes to your hypothesis. Honestly, I think it just reflects how little foresight and governing interest this administration has, and how they were filling slots based on identity politics. That's the only thing that mattered. That Harris is unlikable is something they found out after they brought her on board and that she couldn't live up to whatever was put on her plate is her failing (but that's not surprising to any who knew here before).

Harris, of course, is likely a narcissist who always diverts blame. So are the Bidens, but they're in control (supposedly).

Reminds me a lot of McCain and Palin, McCain chose her for the symbolism, but his team didn't actually like her after the choice, and when things fell apart they all jumped to blame her because McCain still ran the gravy train. Much the same way, there's no benefit to hardly anyone to support Harris now.

A few thoughts in response to your hypothesis:

1. Robert Heinlein: "Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence."

Kamala is an inept politician who didn't make it to the Iowa caucuses. She is not likeable and her ability to engage in a discussion of policy is just as bad as Dopey Joe. She had staffers leaving her campaign in droves. She was a terrible choice.

2. Biden put her on the ticket as assassination/25th Amendment removal insurance.

3. Biden promised a female running mate and was pressured to make that a POC. We should be glad he didn't pick Joy Reid.

4. Biden's personnel choices are terrible. Biden's entire team is composed of numbskulls. Blinken? Austin? Yellen (a revelation in office, I might add)? Sullivan? Dopey Joe is having trouble deciding to re-nominate Powell. What rock did he find Omarova under? Harris is at par for a Biden pick.

5. Cat fight! You don't really think this is about Dr. Jill do you? Give Kamala some agency. She is fully capable of driving herself into a dead end.

My name goes here. said...

Prediction number 1: If Harris is elevated to the big chair because Biden is 25th amended out, or because Biden (or more likely his handlers) decide that he is really not up for the job her administration will do so poorly she will receive credible Democrat primary challengers.

Prediction number 2: if Harris is running in the Democrat primary for president in 2024, she loses to another Democrat candidate.

Big Mike said...

@Althouse, I read that article last night, and I think you are dead wrong. I think Kamala Harris really is being shunted to the rear, but it's because she has been given opportunities to show what she can do and has failed miserably.

There's an old saying, the we each have only one chance to make a good first impression. Kamala's chance came when Biden overturned Trump's policies with respect to border control (in retrospect, and make that Trump's wise policies) and the result was something that even today, ten months later, is called "the border crisis." It's even been called that by far left-of-center news media. Biden decided to punt the problem in Kamala's direction and with much fanfare he put her in charge. I imagine that he thought she'd do the standard politician's "listening tour" shtick and visit parts of the border, including a few centers where migrants were housed, do a few photo ops with ragged migrants where she could ooze sympathy by the bucketful, meet with (carefully selected) CBP agents to "listen," and meet with some migrant advocates. Then return home and stand behind and to Biden's right while he announces programs and policies that might not accomplish anything, but which gives the impression that the Biden administration is going to "do something."

Given an opportunity to excel, Kamala just sat on her hands and did nothing. Zip. Nada. Which let to Lester Holt's famous interview where he presses her about the border. "We've been to the border," she asserts. "But you haven't been to the border," he responds. "And I haven't been to Europe, either," she giggles testily. I mean Lester Effing Holt is not precisely a member of the far right. At that point I could picture Joe and his advisors just sadly shaking their heads at his VP's lack of political instincts, lack of readiness for the job and overall lack of gravitas.

Biden has since given her other opportunities, and she has botched them, too. Add to that her staff turmoil, well documented in your beloved Washington Post and elsewhere, senior people on her staff resigning rather than work for her one more day, and off course Joe and his people are freezing her out and relegating to the background, useful only to be the 51st vote in the Senate. How many times can she embarrass the administration before they give up on her? Apparently the limit has already passed. She might run in 2024? In her dreams.

And now, Althouse, I have to ask. Is there no place in your feminist viewpoint where a woman turns out to not be up to her job? No woman is ever simply incompetent? Maybe you need to think about it.

jaydub said...

Biden picked her because she was a POC, but didn't realize she was also a POS. Now he does, or more likely, whoever calls the shots in the administration does. Okay, Slow Joe saddled himself with an annoying woman who slept her way to the state AG and the senate, who couldn't even get 10% of the vote in the California primary, who dropped out before Iowa, who as VP has zero accomplishments as well as congressional levels of approval/disapproval, who still has room to cackle her way lower in the opinion of the American public, but it's supposed to be surprising that she hasn't been given another high profile assignment to ignore like she did her assignment on the border? Even CNN can't put lipstick on that kind of pig. Let's go Brandon!

I am not sure how “freezing out Kamala” matters here. If Joe Biden dies or becomes incapacitated ala Woodrow Wilson circa his 1919 stroke, she becomes President per the 25th Amendment. And if she becomes president before the 2024 election, whoever in the West Wing that is “freezing her out” will find themselves on the outside of the White House looking in. Kamala may be complaining about having nothing to do or being shut out of being a voice in decisions being crafted for Biden, but I would also bet that she is making a list of names for revenge since the odds don’t look good that Biden will be able to finish out his term.

The “chain of evidence” leading to the “crime” — KH [Kamala Harris] as VP:

Obama and James Clyburn to failing primary candidate Joe Biden:

“Joe, we can get you the nomination …. but… you gotta pick a black chick for your running mate.”

JB: “Ok, my colleague mainstream African-Americans who are articulate and bright and clean and are nice-looking guys — well at least you Barack. Whatever, but however, the pickings are rather slim.”

BO, JC: “Yeah, you’re right for a change, Joe. Looks like it’s going to be Willie’s ex-squeeze, Kamela Harris. Look at it as impeachment insurance.”

JB: “Ok, Pamela, it is. Where is she from?”

Harris never took more than 5% of any primary in Democrat only primaries. It’s not just that Republicans and independents don’t like her. Democrat voters don’t like her. They never did. She would never be elected president in any properly conducted election. Even coming in as VP of the last administration. The Dems tried HARD to push her. The first six months all the media used Biden-Harris administration constantly. They even “accidentally” would say Harris-Biden occasionally and then “correct” themselves with titters. I had never seen that done before and knew they were setting Joe up to be replaced before his term was up. I am so glad the media’s agitprop didn’t seem to work on even low info voters.

Our host "has a suspicion that the Bidens want to disable Harris".

Sleepy Joe and "Doctor Jill" really don't have to do anything do "disable Harris". Kamala can do that all on her own--n.b. she withdrew from the 2020 primaries without submitting herself to a single election. Let Kamala be Kamala and all will be well--at least in the sense of having her not be an obstacle to Sleepy Joe's 2024 bid.

That said the word "well" is also a key. Joe may well have gone on to his reward in the hereafter by 2024--age has a way of doing that. And even if Joe is still stumbling around in 2025, he will probably be doing so in an Alzheimer's home rather than the White House.

OK, I got through 2/3rds of it. It reminded me of my poly sci courses in college, where there's public politics (optics, speeches, theater) and the nitty-gritty deal-making and arm-twisting that comes from knowing people, their weaknesses, and cutting bargains.

Kamala Harris fails at both. Her public persona is terrible and her interpersonal skills worse. So of course it's everyone else's fault and where it's not that it's the racism baked into America.

The article itself is a fascinating mix of tattling, posturing, balloon-floating (Supreme Court justice Harris?), and narrative-defending.

I'm sorry, what was the question again? What should Harris do? Well, advice is useless. People's personalities are baked-in. Only the people who actively think about alternatives would go through with them, and Harris shows no signs of changing. It's like those stink pieces about Hillary's faults as a campaigner. That turd won't shine.

Given her personality defects, the best she can do is not fall over the furniture and bribe a staffer to slip a lot of Metamucal into Joe's coffee.

And is that why the legacy media democratical cheerleaders pressure results in an immediate, within 12 hours, joint appearance by Biden's Earpiece and The Cackle?

I don't buy the "intentionally freezing her career" theory. If the WH honestly thought she could be of some material help in running the government or improving the administration's public standing, they wouldn't cast her aside in this way. It's only because they honestly thing she's useless that they're treating her as such. And if she were a genuinely talented politician, she would find a way to make a contribution that would earn the public's respect. The fact that her cronies are planting stories like this, whining about how the WH isn't handing her softball assignments to make her look good, shows that the WH is right in assessing her limitations.

Illegal Immigration is one of the top 5 issues according to Americans. VP Harris was put in charge of solving the crisis. She could at least try? Maybe visit the border and talk to people there? South Texas used to be a lock for Democrats, but now it is flipping Republican, because Democrats don't seem to care about issues along the border despite, as I repeat, being one of the top 5 issues in the US. It would be a top 3 behind the economy and Covid, but poor government leadership pushed Illegal Immigration to fourth. (source)

That makes sense. Harris was politically dead in the water, going nowhere fast, up until the moment that Joe Biden picked her for VP candidate. Now he feels this need to destroy her?

Look, whatever is going on, it is because Joe Biden did his usual thing and totally effed up. Biden had to go and shoot off his mouth about picking a woman of color for VP. And when he then saw that she was the best of a sorry lot, he was already committed.

While I believe this is certainly correct, it's crazy for an American president in general and especially this one. If Biden dies in office, as is very likely, Harris will be the one to take over. What are the alternatives? Nancy Pelosi? Pete Buttgag, whose credibility is so bludgeoned blacks will abandon him en masse? Other mediocrities that I can't imagine ascending to the Oval Office even with cabal backing?

We are currently so deep in terminal convergence that a Trump Restoration is an incredibly soft option for the Biden junta. OR, they can keep up the facade- after the midterms whoever takes over the government may have the whole Biden team executed outright, and move on to the Obama cabal depending on how well they do.

Lest we forget, Biden got backed into a corner by the huge progressive majority to choose a female minority candidate as his VP. He would have been better off to have picked a moderate like Amy Klobuchar.

As for the speculation that Dr. Jill pulled the plug on Kamala, the real fact is that Harris didn't understand that wearing a mask and winning an election isn't enough. She should have jumped in to get the new administration going but she simply didn't know how to do anything except open mouth, insert foot.

Jill Biden had enough to do keeping the dog bites down and Joe awake.

When Biden picked Harris as his running mate, he was essentially anointing her as the future of the Democratic Party.

The last few presidents have had either good relations with their VP or at least pretended that it was so. But that was not often the case historically.

FDR loathed Truman, thinking him the tool of a corrupt state machine. The Kennedy boys loathed Johnson, and he reciprocated the loathing to the point that Jackie thought to the end of her days that Johnson may have played a part in JFK's assassination. Lincoln had no use for his Johnson VP either.

The list can go on & on. We just may be returning to historical normal in American presidential politics, except in an age of blabbering 365x24 social media.

Biden is stuck with Harris no matter what happens, which means the US is between a rock and a hard place if she ascends to the presidency since she appears to be incompetent as veep. In theory, Biden picked her as the “best” person to be his veep. Interesting, since most Americans, including Democrats (at least before the primaries) figured out that she probably wasn’t qualified to be Town Crier. So who foisted her on to Biden? It doesn’t matter now but it is curious because Biden and his staff are sure keeping her out of the proceedings. And they (and we) are stuck with her. There are only two ways to legally remove her - either by impeachment, which ain’t gonna happen as she hasn’t done anything egregious and anyway the Dems in Congress will close ranks to protect one of their own despite her being an anchor on the administration and in the next election (especially if she is president by then) or resignation, which also ain’t gonna happen since she knows she is a heartbeat away from the top position in the free world which is looking like a real possibility at this time. I read somewhere that Biden’s advisors are trying to figure out how to use the 25th Amendment to remove Harris. That amendment only mentions what can be done about an incapacitated president and not the veep.

Maybe in this case, as in many others, the best explanation is the one that is the most simple. If so, Biden and his team are not paying any attention to Harris and her unpopularity solely because they are overwhelmed with another, more severe problem, Joe's own declining popularity. Ironically, if Harris and her team keep complaining to the press and others about Biden's slights, Biden will lose even more support from the minorities and woke voters who supposedly adore Harris.

Rosalyn C. said...

Of all the possibilities I think the most likely is that Harris is being deactivated because she is being too aggressive about moving into the White House. As commenter Gabriel pointed out, no VP has ever been "groomed" to become President. Stacey Abrams was unseemly about running for VP, and Harris is doing the same in running for President; really audacious considering Biden is still in his first year.

Many people right after the election victory, including Doug Emhoff, Harris's husband, were excitedly celebrating her ascension to the presidency as if it is a foregone conclusion. (I looked for that video but could not find anything still online.) I found the assumption shocking but lots of people were thinking that way. I believe that Ann was predicting that Biden would only last a month and would certainly not serve out his entire term. I disagreed and see the Bidens' rejection of Harris's ambition as a definitive statement of their intent to stay the full four years. They are sending Harris a message of "not so fast" and "mind your manners."

Harris ignores the obvious warning and doubles down, makes her dissatisfaction public. She really believes she is owed the presidency and thinks she can pressure Biden to make it happen. (How dumb can you get?) The more Harris pushes the more he will resist. I don't think Biden gives a sh*t anymore what anyone thinks; literally, he can fart in public whenever he wants. He's not going to be pushed out.

No one but Harris's inner circle, namely her sister and husband, believe anyone is owed the Presidency.

The Bidens haven't shown any competency at anything since the election. There is no reason to believe they are thinking of anything beyond their own survival here. Harris couldn't even convince a microscopic percentage of her own party (even Mayor Pete did better than her) she should be President, let alone the rest of the voting public. So no, they aren't trying to toughen her up for anything.

What they are doing (as I've stated before) is making sure no one tries to pull the trigger on the 25th Amendment. Much as Obama picked Slow Joe as assassination insurance (who would be stupid enough to try to kill Obama if it meant Biden would be President?), Biden is using Heels Up Harris as "incapacitation" insurance. The worse they can make her look, the harder it becomes for official Washington to consider replacing him.

The thing is I think shes pliable enough to do whatever the powers that be demand of her. As long as she gets the office.

I've long thought that Biden's campaign was expected to lose. There would be a blue wave which gained the Dems seats in the House, gained them the Senate, but Trump would narrowly win reelection. With that in mind, I think Harris was picked because she, like Biden, was expected to do the least damage down ballot for Dems, and because a loss would limit her future political ambitions for a good 8-12 years.

In some ways that would have been the ideal situation for the Dems: they could spend four years investigating Trump and anyone around him, fundraising off of it, while basically neutering him of any power. Trump and Trumpism would have been seen as political poison by the GOP. The steal occurred not as some long planned operation, but a desperate attempt to salvage something when they realized on election night that not only was Trump blowing through the numbers he needed for reelection, but that he was likely to drag the GOP into control of the House. That would have been a disaster that Dem leadership would have been unlikely to survive.

There is just no there there. She has never had a difficult moment in her life. No pressures or formative experiences except for her utterly failed primary campaign.

It has nothing to do with how Joe Biden treated her. She is terrible at being a leader. She has failed her way up because she is black and female and at least not morbidly obese.

Biden wasn't given many responsibilities as vice president, either. Obama did very little for him and he had no chance in 2016.

The VP is an elected official and does not serve the President. The office is constitutionally very limited and the President is not required to give the VP anything to do.

Harris could leverage the fact that Biden is so damn old into more power for herself if she were smart. She's not very smart.

She should be grateful she has a low profile while Biden's approval ratings are plummeting below 40%. Why would she want to be associated with that?

What's she going to do when she is the White House? Who's going to protect her then? Why does she require protection? Because she's a woman? I don't remember Dick Cheney crying about the attacks on him. He seemed to enjoy it.

There is crying that VP Biden didn't get attacked all the time the way Harris is. Even if true, Biden was not an obvious heir to Obama the way Harris is. Obama wasn't 78. Of course Harris is given more attention. That's why she took the job.

Harris should not be president. She's too weak to handle it. If she can't handle the heat she's getting now, she's going to collapse when she is president.

NotWhoIUsedtoBe said...

My final take is that Biden is rationally giving her nothing to do because she will screw up. She's not competent.

"They're consistently sending her out there on losing issues in the wrong situations for her skill set," said a former high-level Harris aide.

What bullshit. This is a nice way to say she can't handle any assignment she's been given.

Was Harris's career really going anywhere? Many politicians attract attention when they declare their candidacy, and then quickly fizzle out. That's how it was with Harris.

If Kamala is frozen out, it's in part her own fault. She needed to grab the opportunities and responsibilities she wanted and make use of them, and she didn't. In part, it's how things are today. The president isn't making policy now. It's foolish to think the VP would get to.

I'm skeptical about "impeachment insurance" theories. There aren't that many good VP prospects to begin with, and Biden painted himself into a corner by promising to pick a woman and needing to appoint an African-American. Vice presidents have always been mediocre nonentities, so special theories really aren't needed to account for their ineptitude.

Yes, she can.

She's the elected VP of the US. Biden* can refuse to give her extra duties, but other than via impeachment no one can boot her out of the office or take away her platform.

Her problem is that she's such a pathetic candidate that she had to drop out of hte Democrat Presidential Primary before the first voting, because no one liked her.

The Biden team picked her because she is black, female, and an incompetent non-entity who's no threat to Joe's team.

They gave her the border issue to be "hers". She could have gone down there and sucked up to the open borders crowd by welcoming all the illegals. She didn't. She could have gone down there and sucked up to the moderates by actually trying to do something to stop all teh illegals. She didn't.

Something a lot of people here aren't considering: the effect of the 50 - 50 Senate.

If Harris were to resign as VP, the GOP in teh Senate could block any replacement. That would keep the Dems from being able to get a majority in the Senate (no more VP tie-breaking vote).

So they can't get rid of her

But if Biden gets 25th'd out, then Harris becomes President, losing her VP tie-breaking vote. Again: complete stall on Dem agenda in the Senate.

So the Dems can't get rid of either Joe or Kamala before the Nov 2022 election, unless something else breaks the 50 - 50 tie (either way. A GOP with 51 seats in the Senate would be willing to let VP be replaced, because Doing so wouldn't remove their majority).

If the Dems get hammered in 2022, then VP Harris could most certainly start campaigning for President in 2023. If the Biden* team objects, then she can start talking about his mental incompetence.

But if she started campaigning against him now, and then the Dems get hammered in 2022, other Dems would blame her for the loss, and she'd be total toast.

So, expect whining, but that's it, for the next year

That's...a joke, right?

She's not "young." She's not ancient, either. She's middle-aged.

She's not visibly "black." I mean, you can tell her ancestors weren't from Finland, but she doesn't particularly look like they were Subsaharan African. She looks like an OC Housewife who spent too long in the tanning bed. First three times I saw her, I wondered if she didn't have Native American blood, y'know, like Elizabeth Warren doesn't.

I presume she's "clean," whatever that means. Unless it means devoid of scandals, in which case she obviously isn't.

"Bright?" The banjo-playing kid from Deliverance outshines her.

"Articulate?" More so than my 13-year-old son; less-so than my 16-year-old daughter.

"Infectious laugh?" Only if one has the misfortune to witness that cackle in person, with inadequate social distancing, and she's shedding viruses.

"Great smile?" Actually...her smile is reasonably symmetrical and proportionate. So, not bad on the smile. "Great" is exaggeration.

"When she comes out as gay she will be unstoppable."

Of the women I've known who were into that, I don't think a single one of them would be into THAT. But, I grant there will be more people who'll vote for her because she likes mutually-masturbating other chicks, than people who'll avoid voting for her for the same reason. So, it'd probably net her some votes in the end.

I've tried to be judicious here, and give you credit where it seemed you were on to something.

But for most of what you said...well, if you're not joking, you weren't "on to something"; you were merely "on something."

Mr Wibble said...

Harris' problem is that she's too stupid to see how to attack into the ambush. If the Biden WH wants to screw her over, then fight back by openly going against them. She's presiding over a 50/50 Senate, which gives her a huge amount of leverage.

For example: she should have been at the border every week, meeting with governors, speaking with BP and other groups, etc. Openly defy the open borders folks in the administration, call for much more aggressive enforcement. Then, with the BBB bill basically dead, cut a deal with Manchin, Sinema, and more "moderate" GOP types for funding a border wall, construction of refugee camps, stay in Mexico policy codified and enhanced, etc., all in exchange for things like increased visas, a path to citizenship for dreamers, etc. Yeah, she'll piss off the hard-left base, but walking out with Senate GOP and Dems backing her and handing a the leadership a fully-fleshed out bill that has GOP support would win her points with Middle America, and could be crafted to appeal to blue-collar voters.

Ditto the energy crisis: there are plenty of progressive policies which she could get the GOP to sign on to in exchange for locking in approvals for oil and gas exploration and refinement here in the US, at least for say 15 years. And the beneficiaries would be the kind of blue-collar workers whom she could use as a power base.

Biden was a useless appendage for eight years and it suited him right down to the ground. He and Hunter could amass great fortunes peddling influence even though he neither had to accomplish anything or suffer any accountability. Sez Joe, if Harris doesn't like similar treatment, she can lump it. If she has to wait until she's 78 to be president so be it. Other people have had to.

to be fair, it is kind of a relief to know that both the President and Vice President are just puppets. I was kind of worried about them, thinking maybe they were just as nasty as they seemed to be, but it turns out they are just scared little puppets.
Poor Obama had just enough of a weird ability to sound like he was not a puppet to make me wonder (I was wrong, he always was a puppet, starting with his burnt-out stoner days), and the Republican presidents who ran for office when I was 36 or older (in other words, the ones who ran for office because I didn't) were all, except for Trump, terribly like puppets.
Reagan was about as good a president as we could have had, back in the day, but he was usually going though the motions as a puppet too, fortunately not all day long, but most of the day.

Politics is a lot like real life.

If I remember correctly, the reports were that Kamala was not the first pick for VP and Biden (or whoever is pulling his strings) did not want to pick her, but due to his various blurted out promises they were basically forced to pick her. So, yeah, why would they go out of their way to prop up someone they didn't want in the first place? It has been pretty obvious so far that they have been trying to sabotage her, putting her in charge of hopeless tasks and/or tasks they want her to fail. Given Kamala appears to have no actual leadership skills other than internal politicking and sexual favors, any task given to her is hopeless and she has not disappointed.

As noted Harris has no allies and has apparently made no friends in DC. But the shot caller here is obviously Fake Doctor First Lady Jill. She limits his appearances and tells him he’ll be in trouble if he’s caught talking to journ-0-lists.

I kind of agree that Kamala is being frozen out and that the big chiller is Dr. Jill Biden. Her job, as she sees it, is to keep Biden in, and she is competent at this. She is attaching "opportunities" to Biden's competitors the way the Mafia attaches cement blocks to people they're tired of - Kamala got the border; Pete got the supply chain. The suggestion is that people get assignments from the White House but no help. Even so, it's very strange how neither one has made the slightest pretense that they are competently handling a major crisis. This may be the signature tune of this administration: no malarkey, just raw, straight-up incompetence. Why is it like this? My idea at present is that becoming President and moving to the White House accelerated Biden's mental decline - he might have been OK as President if he was as he was during the race but now a disastrous collapse is occurring. The usual political ploys are going on - who's in and who's out - but with that is something no one knows how to handle. DC is terrified. And when it comes out the American people won't even care because what Biden is becoming is what they think DC is anyhow.

Seems more plausible than the Biden as evil genius playing eleven dimensional chess in support of Harris take:

Do I mean to suggest that Biden’s White House encouraged, maybe even proposed, CNN’s nasty take? Yes! But why? The answer seems to be: If Biden declines to run again, and Harris declares her candidacy in 2023 or even 2024, it will be very hard to stop her without being accused of racism and/or sexism and/or disloyalty. Biden himself will be put on the spot — endorse or not endorse? The time to short-circuit Harris is now, before she begins her run. Signal that you’re giving potential opponents time and political space to build up their reps and their networks.

This is what the Biden team, worried that Harris will be a loser, seems to be diligently doing.

I suppose that's obvious.

Openly defy the open borders folks in the administration

everyone (except Mr Wibble,) seems to forget that
a) the VP is not In the administration
b) the VP is not In the Executive Branch
c) the VP reports, to NO ONE
d) the only option (other than assassination) for stopping a VP, is
...i) impeachment
..ii) removal from office (which takes SIXTY SEVEN senate votes)

of course; Normally, a VP has NO actual power. Her only power is BREAKING TIES IN THE SENATE
oh look!
Think Joe Manchin has power? Not without the VP, he don't

Let's look at the last several big hitters provided to us by the Democrat Party:
John Kerry - Looooong term Senator from Mass. List his major legislative accomplishments. As SOS. It is to laugh. I'll wait.

Hilary Clinton - Her accomplishments were questioned during her run for POTUS. We got 1) a resume of offices held and 2) the actual "accomplishment" of flying an ungodly number of miles as SOS.

Joe Biden - He claimed some legislative action. Like being tough on black criminals. These accomplishments are now considered negatives. What's on his, "I did this" list that he's still proud of?

Kamela - Similar to Biden she has some accomplishments as AG that are now being hidden away. What has she done that is note worthy today.

Governors? Including the "I was robbed" non-Governor of Georgia? Bhwahahahaha

Such are the fruits of identity politics.
