"How quickly Democrats absorb Tuesday’s results and begin to respond will determine how well they can hold down expected losses in the coming midterms."

".... Democrats would be foolhardy to underestimate what happened Tuesday. To lose a state like Virginia, which has been trending Democratic for a decade, and to struggle so much in New Jersey suggests that, unless things change, only the bluest of states or districts are likely to be safe in 2022.... It wasn’t just Virginia or New Jersey that suggested Democrats will need to regroup. In races across the country, there were signs that voters see the party as having moved too far to the left, even as its progressive wing has been flexing its muscles. In Virginia, the exit polls showed that a majority of voters said the party is too liberal. New Yorkers elected Democrat Eric Adams as their new mayor after a campaign in which he made public safety a prime issue and presented himself as more centrist than liberal. In Minneapolis, voters overwhelmingly defeated a referendum to dismantle the police department a year after the Black Lives Matter movement had elevated the issue of police reform to the front of the progressive agenda. In Buffalo, Mayor Byron Brown, who lost the primary to socialist India Walton, appeared to have been reelected as a write-in candidate...."

Writes Dan Balz in "A sobering reality hits Democrats after Tuesday’s elections losses" (WaPo).

We'll see if Democrats quickly reset after this kick in the head.

ADDED: Here's my post from last June when India Walton won the Democratic Party primary in Buffalo:
"Mommy!! I won!!! Mommy, I'm the mayor of Buffalo!!! Well, not until January, but yeah. Like, yes. Yes, mom."... The NYT article points out that Walton will be "the first socialist mayor of a major American city since 1960, when Frank P. Zeidler stepped down as Milwaukee’s mayor."

It was assumed she automatically win in the general election. Didn't happen: "Byron Brown claims victory in Buffalo mayor's race; write-in ballots swamp India Walton" (Buffalo News):

"At the very beginning, they said we can’t win, that it was impossible to win as a write-in,” the mayor shouted to cheering supporters. "But you know, you can never count a Buffalonian out."

The few sensible Democrats left have to decide if Bernie is the way to go. The LA Times is sticking with Bernie but that, of course, is California. Joe Scarborough gets it but how many sane Democrats are left ?

They won't. The new Democrats are Marxists, and Marxism is the religion of the state.

They are true believers...

Senators Manchin and Sinema were surely put forward as moderate trial balloons by party leadership, as the party sought to walk back from anti-Trump knee-jerk extremism without angering the hard left. The senators tag-teamed to offer new reasons to not act, and hung tough until the election. I now expect the Democratic party to split into its slightly-left-of-center dominant traditions and a mostly powerless far left wing.

Maxine Waters was called "Mad Maxine" for decades. She was long politically impotent and ignored. AOC and Jayapal may well become the next generation of the same.

Is it too late for Democrats to get Trump back on Twitter and Facebook?

The progressive arm of the DNC will not re-set. They are ideologues and will do anything in their power to gain control of this country. But, fortunately they have “woken” a sleeping giant. The silent majority is back… all Americans who believe in law and order, equality for all, no special treatment for a small number of radicals who want to shove their agenda down our throats, smaller govt. which means no more big social programs for their base, an energy independent country, no more begging OPEC and Russia for oil, close the border to illegals who are flooding into our country, ie, back to the Trump policies that were in place before the new resident in the White House erased all the progress that was made in four years of Trump. To all Democrats who do not believe in America first, get the hell out of our way. The democrats made a huge mistake putting up a pretend president and thinking that the American people would buy into this farce.

Temujin said...

Quick answer: Nope. None of them, including and especially their cheerleaders in the corporate media get it yet. They didn't get why Trump got elected. They still don't. They don't get the pulse of the average American tax paying voter. Why would they? They've never spoken to one. Never took a trip to a medium sized town in Pennsylvania, or Michigan, or Nebraska. Again- why would they? They've been told those people don't count. Their culture, traditions, and opinions don't count.

No- I don't see Dems getting it at all. By tonight you'll see the talking heads 'splaining why progressives should be even more aggressive.

As they say in the South: Bless their hearts.

If Progressives act as Progressives do, their conclusion will be that they're not left-wing enough and need to push harder on all their most radical positions. Think bolder, spend more, scream louder, alienate more. Centrist Democrats will refuse to go along.

Here's where party discipline comes in. Can Pelosi and Schumer put the screws to the AOC and Omar gangs, or are they too old, too sidelined?

It won't be pretty and it's unlikely to be sorted out by the mid-terms.

Oh Yea said...

They absorbed it, specifically the Progressives but not the way some would think. The Progressive message this morning is that the reason the Democrats lost is because the Progressive agenda has not passed in the BBB bill. They are going to double down on getting their agenda through this year even at the cost of any and all moderates because they know there is no way it will be passed after the next election. With only a one vote majority in the senate and only a few seats in the house they know there is now way they will hold control let alone not being devastated.

In another thread Freder opined that yesterday's GOP wins were no biggie.

So.. can he explain how a black GOP candidate won in Buffalo as ** a write-in ** against a socialist?

And why a Latino Republican won a seat in the Texas legislature in a district that went +14 for Biden in 2020?

And how a GOP woman won as City Attorney in....Seattle?

Keep whistling past those graveyards, Freder!

As best I can tell from Democrat Twitter, the lesson of the election is that Virginians elected a black female immigrant as Lt. Governor because they're a bunch of racist, sexist xenophobes.

Also note that the antifa stalinist bloc of Seattle is in shambles in the mayoral and DA races. The previous CHAZ-loving councilmembers are fighting for their political lives as well. Even racist nutcase Kshama Sawant has been slated to be recalled by her own ward. And her crowning capital gains extortion scheme she championed for the state has been handed a big FU by voters.

A political earthquake occurred last night. Coast to coast. Democrats’ policies were crushed. What’s CNN discussing this morning?...

Crushed?! Really? The Republican won in Virginia, and New Jersey is currently too close to call. Minneapolis' plan to "defund" the police (which is how the opposition dishonestly portrayed the measure) was soundly defeated, but did anyone actually expect it to pass?

The Democrats will not adjust. But that isn't the problem.

Now it is the GOPe that will start thinking they won.

Most of these republicans are just going to assume control of the grift train and start paying off their cronies.

They don't get it.

The only ones who get what this is about are Trump and his allies. This is a battle against the leviathan and it doesn't matter who is in charge of it. The entire DC establishment needs to go.

Democrats put on a fine showing considering their weaknesses. The soul-searching needs to be on the Republican side. To win by only 1% in an almost ideal environment? The center and right needs to figure out why so many citizens hate America and do something about it. Youngkin should have blown out this race by at least 30% or more.

Ummm... It was a black former DEMOCRAT mayor who lost in the primary to an avowed socialist who won the write-in.

The few Republicans in Buffalo teamed up with the remaining less insane Democrats to defeat the socialist.

In Minneapolis, voters overwhelmingly defeated a referendum to dismantle the police department a year after the Black Lives Matter movement had elevated the issue of police reform to the front of the progressive agenda.

Imagine a powerful, corporate-backed right-wing group with tens of millions of dollars and unmatched influence dragging the Republican party to the right, and the party suffering huge because of it. Imagine the focus that group would get, along with lectures about extremism and predictions of its demise.

Now, consider Black Lives Matter. Was any single group more responsible for dragging the Democrats to the far left?

Ann... they ain't ever gonna learn. I lay you odds at Mid-term they will lose both houses but a HUGE amount. Might even see a 2/3 majority if Biden keeps pissing off people.

Cause if the Republicans can get 2/3 majority in at least the Senate, and control the house, they can IMPEACH BIDEN quite successfully.. as in conviction. Then turn their attention to Hyena Harris.

They lost every state wide office in Virginia, came close to losing the Governorship in New Jersey, lost the Mayorship in Buffalo, and the District Attorney's office in Seattle. All of those are blue areas. But yeah, it's the Republicans who need to soul search. A quote from the movie 300 seems appropriate: "Pray they're that stupid, pray we're that lucky."

Well, at least India Walton can console herself that she's the first! black female socialist to lose the Buffalo mayoral race to a write-in candidate.

“But I think that there’s something else that's happening. I think the Democrats are coming across in ways that we don’t recognize, that are annoying and offensive and seem out of touch in ways that I don’t think show up in our feeds when we're looking at our kind of echo chamber. And I think that this is a message here."

lane ranger said...

I think that any Democratic "reset" will be along the lines of asking anew their usual question, which is not "what do the voters want", but instead "how much socialism can we get away with?". They will conclude, as they always do, that it is only a messaging problem.

Lurker21 said...

The unnuanced, unsubtle morning radio guy is talking about New Jersey being stolen.

I don't know if it's true or not, but if that talk comes up after every close election there's a "Chicken Little" effect that makes it harder and harder to take seriously.

Maybe, instead of abolishing the filibuster, we should make it universal, and not elect anyone who doesn't get over 60% of the vote.

I don't know how that would work in practice -- or if it would work in practice -- but such petty concerns have never stopped politicians before.

Lurker21 said...

Buffalo politics, and New York state politics, have yielded some strange bedfellows because of all the minor parties. Brown lost the last Democratic primary, but in past elections he was able to win not only the Democrat and the Working Families Party endorsements, but also those of the Independence and even the Conservative Party. Last time he also won the endorsement of the Women's Equality Party, which ironically was founded by Andrew Cuomo.
