"An 'insurrection,' as the dictionary will tell you, is a violent uprising against a government or other established authority."

"Unlike the violent riots that swept the country in the summer of 2020—riots that caused some $2 billion in property damage and claimed more than 20 lives—the January 6 protest at the Capitol lasted a few hours, caused minimal damage, and the only person directly killed was an unarmed female Trump supporter who was shot by a Capitol Hill Police officer. It was, as Tucker Carlson said shortly after the event, a political protest that 'got out of hand.'"

Writes Roger Kimball in "The January 6 Insurrection Hoax" (Real Clear Politics).

When I see "uprising," I think of this:

Sometimes people want to be thought of as insurrectionists. Sometimes the political protesters that got out of hand want the bigger concept to apply to them. They use it to brag about the scope and significance of what they accomplished.

It goes both ways, this spin. But it's funny to me to see leftists using "insurrection" against the protesters they hate when they — some of them — used the same notion to vaunt their 2011 takeover of the Wisconsin Capitol.

And don't forget Occupy Wall Street.

Am I failing to distinguish "insurrection" and "uprising"? I've dabbled in researching the difference if any. I think the 2 words mean the same thing, though "insurrection" might have somewhat more of a connotation of armed rebellion. I don't think any of the things discussed above were armed rebellion. So I'd just use the word "uprising" and use it consistently to refer to the takeover of the Wisconsin Capitol and the takeover of the U.S. Capitol. If you don't want to use that word for both things, just don't use it for either. Or be exposed as a propagandist.

Good choice.

But you left out the left wing protestor "uprisings" against the Kvanaugh nomination (invasion of the Senate Hart building), and teh one two weeks ago about "climate change", oh, sorry, "climate crisis!11!". The one where they invaded some Federal offices

Those words are fluid enough that you can paint your opponents however you like. If they're on the side you don't like it's probably an insurrection, because that sounds more scary.

It is amusing how the most heavily armed population on earth showed up without their guns, and, at the urging of FBI stogies, broke in to the Capitol building to mostly wander around and take selfies.

Certainly not an insurgency, and not really much of an uprising. A protest turned into a riot, yes. Though clearly they'd have treated better if they were trying to burn down a Federal Courthouse in Oregon.

Have to remember that “Insurrection” is lefty projection in more than one way. Trump was already referring to the blue states’ election fraud as insurrection, in terms of the Insurrection Act, which allows federal intervention when civil rights are being denied. The lefties needed to drown that out right quick, in their typical “I know you are, but what am I?” style.

Many of the riots last year do not fit the definition of insurrection, as they were not directed against the government. However, any that targeted police stations do, as well as the Portland riots at the federal courthouse, and Seattle's Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.

The word riot is perfectly suitable to describe all these events: If they were genuine uprisings or insurrections, participants would have remembered to bring their guns.

January 6 may meet some dictionary definition of "insurrection" but that term seems to be more associated with rebellion and seeking to overturn the government and create a new one, rather than simply doing violence against government. Certainly, the media seems to be inferring that Jan 6 was a rebellion, rather than just a violent protest.

My understanding of the motivations of the 1/6 crowd was that they were not seeking to overturn the government but rather to have the elected officials in the Capitol enforce the Constitution and apply it according to the protesters' (incorrect) interpretation.

It was a protest that morphed into a riot not unlike the BLM protests/riots last summer. Given the leniency (or outright praise) in which those rioters were given by authorities, it wasn't entirely unreasonable for the Jan 6 crowd to think laws against rioting really don't apply anymore.

Readering said...

Out here in LA I have always resisted calling the Rodney King verdict rioting an uprising.

What makes a freighted term appropriate for January 6 is that there was a political aim of stopping the formal certification by the House of the presidential election result and the inauguration of Biden that month. Hardly a hoax.

I like the idea of imagining what commenters are about to say, nailing it down myself (so you don't talk down to me and act like I didn't think of that), and have that as a basic standard that you want to top.

I wasn't going to necessarily equate insurrection with uprising, much less demand that others see them as the exact same or tell them what words they can or cannot use.

The proper word here isn't "uprising" -- it is "projection." It is accusing others of exactly the thing that you are guilty of, and in when done in politics, followed by attacking them for it, e.g. reading a Pelosi quote and dragging Trump into it while telling others not to drag Trump into it. Some of it is blind narcissism, some of it is intentional political tactic.

BLM occupied a burned-down Burger King and murdered three people, the last a seven year old girl, as Mayor Keisha Bottoms specifically made the police stand down — for weeks — as Bottoms and City Councilwoman Joyce Shepherd pretended to be “negotiating” with the armed men shooting at passers-by on public roads.

Then Bottoms actually got good national press (idiots) for throwing the councilwoman under the bus after the child was killed, when it was ultimately her decision to keep the police from shutting down the armed rioters — just as she failed to secure the area surrounding our state Capitol during our last session as rioters pulled people off the streets and beat them into intensive care; prevented people from entering the building to exercise their political and First Amendment rights, and destroyed (again) businesses and hotel fronts around downtown and the infamous Underground Atlanta, which has been a cesspool of taxpayer-funded violence and looting on and off for decades.

That’s insurrection. In fact, that’s several insurrections plus a basket of violent riots. Hilariously though, the looters did destroy the original CNN sign.

Governments resort to a variety of measures to maintain legitimacy.

The governments that block audits, resist transparency, count millions of "mail in ballots" days after an election is over, and get caught filling out ballots for nursing home occupants generally have issues with legitimacy.

That is the #1 hashtag on twitter right now.

Letter from Washington Post Executive Editor Sally Buzbee about The Post’s Jan. 6 investigation
Received Sunday, 11:45 p.m. EDT

"...Throughout much of this year, a team of 75 Washington Post journalists has been working to produce a definitive account of Jan. 6 — its causes, its costs and its aftermath. The result of that investigation, a three-part series being published today, makes clear that the violence that day was neither a spontaneous act nor an isolated event."

The Attack: Before, During and After with key findings
Before the attack: Red Flags
During the attack: Bloodshed
After the attack: Contagion
Former president Donald Trump’s response to the findings

'...“The Attack: Before, During and After” lays out in striking detail the red flags that went unheeded in advance of Jan. 6, the consequences of Trump’s inaction as his supporters laid siege to the Capitol and the continuing threats to American democracy...'

The Post began this project in late spring, after efforts in Congress to create a bipartisan panel to examine the Jan. 6 attack collapsed. We launched more than 25 reporters from across the newsroom to examine different aspects of what led to the Capitol siege and its implications. Our photo, video, audio and design teams spent months mapping out a gripping presentation for the project.

"...The Post is proud to publish this revelatory project examining the Capitol attack and what it means for the future of our nation."

Not surprising at all that the Washington Post decided to RELEASE this massive but clearly biased and incomplete report for political reasons JUST BEFORE The November 2 gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey...instead of waiting for the results of the House select committee investigation into the January 6 assault on the Capitol.

Will it sway the election results? WaPo evidently hopes so.

Both actions committed by Capital police before any breach.

The Washington Post? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

If I recall, Ann studied history. There is an analog to January 6 (Epiphany by the way), and it comes from, of all people, Hitler.

"On February 27, 1933, the German parliament (Reichstag) building burned down. The Nazi leadership and its coalition partners used the fire to claim that Communists were planning a violent uprising. They claimed that emergency legislation was needed to prevent this. The resulting act, commonly known as the Reichstag Fire Decree, abolished a number of constitutional protections and paved the way for Nazi dictatorship."

"Implemented one day after the fire, the decree suspended the right to assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and other constitutional protections, including all restraints on police investigations. It remained in effect until Nazi Germany was defeated in May 1945. The decree permitted the regime to arrest and incarcerate political opponents without specific charge, to dissolve political organizations, and to confiscate private property."

Only children and naïve adults believe it was an "insurrection."

Many people, Maxine Waters among them, called and still call the 1992 Rodney King riots an "insurrection." GHW Bush even invoked the Insurrection Act. The 1965 riots have been called the Watts Rebellion or Watts Uprising. Eisenhower and Kennedy used the Insurrection Act to deal with desegregation disturbances and Johnson used it to deal with urban riots. I'd call these events "riots" or "disturbances," not "insurrections" or "uprisings." I'd say much the same thing about January 6th, though maybe "chaos" or "messiness" or "unpleasantness" might be more appropriate.

I'm reminded of the fine word "insurgent." Going back to LaFollette and further back, being an insurgent wasn't a bad thing to be. Then came the unpleasantness in the Middle East and nobody wants to be an insurgent anymore. "Insurgent," "insurrection" and "uprising" are all related words whose roots mean more or less the same thing.

The obvious example: "mostly peaceful protesters" as arsonists vs. "insurrectionists" taking selfies

Even numbers are now in service to political ideology. See "$3.5 trillion = zero".

By all means continue your debate, but please understand that if tomorrow the state requires the definitions to invert, today's definition will be irrelevant, and quite possible criminal.

The right fully understands the left. The left totally misunderstands the right.

In other blogs one of the big misunderstandings the left has is violence, use thereof. The left dials it up and down to achieve what they want. Riots in Portland, Kenosha, D.C., and other cities that can dial up and down and turn off and on- because it's all centrally planned by Democrat operatives. The right, the actual right, not the people living in compounds with insane ideas, don't have a violence dial. It's on or it's off. Once it turns on, it won't be off, anywhere, until they win or are slaughtered.

January 6 was a government operation with the key elements being refusal by Pelosi and Congressional police for more security, the use of many government provocateurs (we still don’t know the total but key among them are the leader and a top lieutenant of Other Keepers who have yet to be indicted for what they did), the removal of barriers around the capital by people dressed in black who have yet to be identified, the stand down of Capitol police and their role as tourist guides to those entering the Capitol, the spring-loaded insurrection narrative, the refusal to acknowledge that the death of the Capitol policeman was unrelated to Jan 6 (yet he was honored by his coffin being placed in the Capitol), the refusal of the show trial Jan 6 commission to subpoena the Speaker and Capitol police, etc. Add to that the un-Constitutional retention of no-threat of flight indicted citizens for months without bail. If this country valued law and order it would launch a commission to investigate the prime movers of Jan 6. But Democrats control the government on this and view this a simply the 3rd major conspiracy to prevent Trump from having power (Russian collusion, Ukraine phone call), not to mention multiple minor operations (disrespecting military in Normandy, etc.).

PJ said...

The principal reason the word “insurrection” has been so insistently applied to the events of January 6 is not that anyone has analyzed, or even cares about, the dictionary definition. It is because the word appears in the Fourteenth Amendment as a disqualification to hold office, and a lot of people who have the power to choose how issues are framed for purposes of public debate intensely wish to see a certain (now former) office-holder disqualified. They use whatever word they need to use.

Dr Weevil said...

Sprezzatura's remarks need some editing: "Seems important to notice that the takeover of the US capitol was directed at [restoring] the democratic transition of power re our country." The election was quite obviously and blatantly stolen. Trump won if you count the votes that were counted while poll-watchers from both sides were present, which are the only ones that can or should be counted. That is, Trump won. He only "lost" because five states sent their Republican poll-watchers home, lying to them that they were going home themselves, went back in and counted all night, and somehow (we all know how) the percentage of Biden votes was much higher when Republicans weren't watching than when they were, just enough higher to make Biden the "winner" of those states. We have Democratic "vote-counters" on film pulling boxes of ballots the Republican vote-counters didn't know about out from under tables and counting some of them three times.

The best clue that Democrats and the press know the election was stolen is the lack of follow-up books and articles telling us in detail how Biden won, as we have always had before, starting with T. H. White's "Making of the President 1960/64/68,etc." series. We still don't know who ordered the polls closed in those five states. Was it planned in advance, or did someone somewhere come up with the idea election night and call those five states. Who ordered it? The only reason we don't know is because Democrats, the press, and never-Trump 'Republicans' don't want us to know, because they all know the election was stolen, and they like that it was stolen.

The "mob" was trying rather ineptly to "overturn" the election only because the official election results were upside down, so overturning them was the only just and moral thing to do. When your kayak flips over, you can "overturn" it - turn it right side up - or drown. When an election is stolen, you have an obligation to overturn the fraudulent results and restore the correct ones.

Many people were injured, including 138 police officers. Four officers who responded to the attack died by suicide within seven months.

General Mike Flynn had his career ruined and was bankrupted as part of a political vendetta. Meanwhile James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Lisa Page, John Brennan, Peter Strzok, and all the rest of the crew at the FBI, the CIA, and other intel agencies suffered nothing. When it came to light that an FBI lawyer altered an email in order to help get a FISA warrant—in other words, that he doctored evidence to spy on a political opponent, which is a felony—he got probation. Andrew McCabe, meanwhile, a former FBI deputy director, just got his pension restored notwithstanding the fact that an Inspector General’s report concluded that he lied multiple times under oath.

The recent news that Special Counsel John Durham has indicted Michael Sussman, a lawyer who covertly worked for the Clinton campaign and lied to the FBI, is welcome news. Granted, it is too early to say where Durham’s investigation will ultimately go, but Sussman’s indictment seems like small beer given the rampant higher-level corruption that saturated the Russia Collusion hoax."

"Which brings me back to Ashli Babbitt, the long-serving Air Force vet who was shot and killed by a nervous Capitol Hill Police officer. Babbitt was a useful prop when the media was in overdrive describing the January 6 events as an “armed insurrection” in which wild supporters of Donald Trump, supposedly at his instigation, attacked the Capitol with the intention of overturning the 2020 election.

According to that narrative, five people, including Babbitt, died in the skirmish. Moreover, it was said, Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick was bludgeoned to death by a raging Trump supporter wielding a fire extinguisher. That gem of a story about the fire extinguisher, reported in our former paper of record, The New York Times, was instantly picked up by other media outlets and spread like a Chinese virus.

Of course, it is absolutely critical to the Democratic Party narrative that the January 6 incident be made to seem as violent and crazed as possible. Hence the crazed comparisons to 9/11, Pearl Harbor, and the Civil War. Only thus can pro-Trump Americans be excluded from “our democracy” by being branded as “domestic extremists” if not, indeed, “domestic terrorists.”

The Sixth Amendment of the Constitution accords American citizens the right to a speedy trial. But most of the political prisoners of January 6—many of whom have been kept in solitary confinement—are still waiting to be brought to trial. And although the media was full of predictions that they would be found guilty of criminal sedition, none has. "

"The indisputable fact about January 6 is that although five people died at or near the Capitol on that day or soon thereafter, none of these deaths was brought about by the protesters. The shot fired Capitol Police Officer Michael Byrd that hit Ashli Babbitt in the neck and killed her was the only shot fired at the Capitol that day. No guns were recovered from the Capitol on January 6. Zero.

"The liberal commentator Glenn Greenwald further diminished the “armed insurrection” meme in an important column last February titled “The False and Exaggerated Claims Still Being Spread About the Capitol Riot.” The title says it all. Kevin Greeson, Greenwald notes, was killed not by the protesters but died of a heart attack outside the Capitol. Benjamin Philips, the founder of a pro-Trump website called Trumparoo, died of a stroke that day. Rosanne Boyland, another Trump supporter, was reported by The New York Times to have been inadvertently “killed in a crush of fellow rioters during their attempt to fight through a police line.” But later video shows that, far from that, the police pushed protesters on top of Boyland and would not allow fellow protesters to pull her out.

Four of the five who died, then, were pro-Trump protesters. And the fifth? Well, that was Officer Sicknick—also a Trump supporter, as it turned out—who, contrary to the false report from The New York Times that went viral, went home, told his family he felt fine, but died a day later from, as The Washington Post eventually and grudgingly reported, “natural causes.” No fire extinguishers were involved in his demise."

this is the truth. The media lie LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE - THEY ARE LYING LIARS WHO LIE.

"The January 6 insurrection hoax prompts lots of questions.

Why, for example, did the government mobilize 26,000 federal troops from all across the country to surround “the people’s house” following January 6? Why were those troops subjected to loyalty tests, with those discovered to be Trump supporters sent packing?

Why is there some 14,000 hours of video footage of the event on January 6 that the government refuses to release? What are they afraid of letting the public see? More scenes of security guards actually opening doors and politely ushering in protestors? More pictures of FBI informants (read: “fomenters”) covertly salted among the crowd?

My own view is that turning Washington into an armed camp was mostly theater. There was no threat that the Washington police could not have handled. But it was also a show of force and an act of intimidation. The message was: “We’re in charge now, rubes, and don’t you forget it.” "

"Joseph Hackett, you see, is a 51-year-old Trump supporter and member of an organization called the “Oath Keepers,” a group whose members have pledged to “defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.” The FBI does not like the Oath Keepers. They arrested its leader in January and have picked up many other members in the months since. Hackett came from his home in Florida to join the Trump January 6 rally. According to court documents, he entered the Capitol at 2:45 that afternoon and left some nine minutes later, at 2:54. The next day, he went home. On May 28, he was apprehended by the FBI and indicted on a long list of charges, including conspiracy, obstruction of an official proceeding, destruction of government property, and illegally entering a restricted building.

As far as I have been able to determine, no evidence of Hackett destroying property has come to light. According to his wife, it is not even clear that he entered the Capitol. But he certainly was in the environs. He was a member of the Oath Keepers. He was a supporter of Donald Trump. Therefore, he must be neutralized.

Joseph Hackett is only one of hundreds of citizens who have been branded as “domestic terrorists” trying to “overthrow the government” and who are now languishing, in appalling conditions, jailed as political prisoners of an angry state apparat."

That’s one melancholy lesson of the January 6 insurrection hoax: that America is fast mutating from a republic, in which individual liberty is paramount, into an oligarchy, in which conformity will be increasingly demanded and enforced.

I don't care what the words are, as long as the nation can express its revulsion for what the 1/6 rioters did. And the vile illegality of their actions. And the stupidity of their cause. They are mostly going to jail; with federal crimes, mostly felonies, on their records; their work/retirement lives overturned; largely shamed in public.

I don't need to spend much time mulling over the usage of "insurrection." But I will definitely continue to use it, because to me it's the very best shorthand for the event.

Out here in LA I have always resisted calling the Rodney King verdict rioting an uprising.

What makes a freighted term appropriate for January 6 is that there was a political aim of stopping the formal certification by the House of the presidential election result and the inauguration of Biden that month. Hardly a hoax.

Every single left wing riot has the political aim of stopping some event they don't want to have happen. One that would go through if the normal political order wasn't overthrown.

So even if your description of 1/6 was entirely correct, in still would not meaningfully distinguish 1/6 from the BLM riots (directed at ending the enforcement of neutral laws via violence), the anti-Kavanaugh invasion of teh Senate hart building (attempting to block the confirmation of a SCOTUS member who was expected to change the direction of SCOTUS), or any of a hundred other left wing assaults on democracy.

the only person directly killed was an unarmed female Trump supporter who was shot by a Capitol Hill Police officer

Not true.

A woman was thrown from the steps (outside), beaten with batons, then dragged into the Capitol. Death ruled "accidental overdose" hours later.

A man, again outside, had a flash bang land at his feet, suffered a subsequent heart attack. Ruled "natural causes" hours later.

Both actions committed by Capital police before any breach.

You're welcome/

You will use it because its the democratical narrative/talking point, and you never deviate from the democratical narrative/talking points.

Ever.

For any reason.

Pitch perfect alignment with the left/far left for about 6 years now, after you decided you had worked hard enough to establish your "Jen Rubin-like" "conservative" "street cred"!......(Spoiler: Not)

Why is everyone here, starting with our esteemed former law professor and including at least one lawyer talking about the "dictionary definition" of the word "insurrection"?

Insurrection is a federal crime. The US Code has the legal definition of what it means.

The dictionary definition is irrelevant. One can't be convicted on that basis. One can only be convicted based on the definition in the USC.

So far nobody has even been charged, much less convicted, of insurrection. (Unless it has happened in the past week or two and I missed it)

They are mostly going to jail; with federal crimes, mostly felonies, on their records; their work/retirement lives overturned; largely shamed in public.

And yet, that's not what seems to be happening. They are being kept in jail, in solitary confinement, not charged with crimes, political prisoners. Who has been charged with a felony? I am sure that if your side creates enough political prisoners, Republicans will sheepishly return to the fold of the NeoCons who send their sons to combat in wasteful wars and Chamber of Commerce types who sell out their jobs and undercut their wages.

That ship has sailed. You hate Trump because he ripped the cover off of the con that the Republicans had been putting on voters for decades.

That being said, there are some people there who should be charged with felonies, a couple dozen at most, based on the video. The rest are no different than the people who tried to shut down the process for confirming Kavanaugh. How many of them are rotting in jail awaiting trial?

"one was shot by Capitol Police while ignoring orders not to enter Pelosi's headquarters"

The Capitol Building is not "Pelosi's headquarters". She isn't a queen and that isn't her palace. It's not even the just the place the House of Representatives meets, it's also the home of the Senate.

That doesn't mean the misguided folks who entered on January 6th weren't trespassing. They certainly were, which is why they were charged with that. Not sedition, or insurrection, or treason, but trespassing.
