Wow
Our farm is up against an Eastern hill-of a substantial height. I have never seen the sun rise here- but In Wintertime, I can measure it’s progress as it creeps down the horse pasture to meet my aging gelding-waiting patiently for its warmth.

I appreciate your sunrise photos.
Thank you.

Yeah, it's gotten unnatural. Time to go back to rationality. I've already changed the bedroom clock.

I believe in the past Trafalgar has been pretty accurate.

The Southwest pilot announcement that had Althouse's panties in a bunch was not "Let's Go Brandon", but "Let's go Braves!" The original claim came from a leftwing AP reporter who then asked for them to open locked cockpit.

Fuck Joe Biden!

I think it's a stretch to call that a "study." It was a survey of college students' opinions, and then a bunch of handwringing by Peterson and Routledge as they try to brainstorm potential explanations. Of course, as a perennial pessimist myself, I take umbrage at their attempt to pathologize pessimism.

For what it's worth, I think the likeliest culprit is an ideology that Peterson and Routledge espouse--classical liberalism and its idolatry of the individual. The trend in the US for the last 40 years has been liberalization, economic and cultural, and the result has been a population of atomized, adrift individuals whose only value is what they can get for themselves in the labor market.

A couple of books were published in the early 1990s describing this dynamic--The McDonaldization of Society by George Ritzer and Jihad vs McWorld by Benjamin Barber. You could also go back another 150 years when a German political economist wrote: "Constant revolutionising of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones. All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind."

Speaking of songs, how can Kris Kristofferson have written both one of the worst songs in the world ('Bobby McGee') and one of the best songs in the world ('For the Good Times').

I won't link to the Janis Joplin abomination, but Ray Price does a masterful job here.

The orchestration is world-class...turn it waaaaay up!

Link to something that says that. I can only find a few partisan websites that say it "might" have been "Let's go Braves."

The airline apologized. The airline could easily have asked the pilot and other personnel on board what was said. If there was an innocent explanation, it would have known it on the first day and used it immediately to apologize.

Your statement doesn't add up. Seems like you're believing what you want to believe. Do you have anything you can link to?

It's funny the way some people view free human beings as "adrift." It was Mussolini who derided England as a "nation of shopkeepers" with no national purpose. You want to help working people? Cut down immigration, which will naturally force up wages and give people economic choices. You don't have to regiment them into battalions taking orders to give their lives meaning. But that's a step to far, because Republicans wanted the cheap labor and Democrats want their insuperable majority.

There are still a few holdover "cheap labor" Republicans, you see them here clutching their pearls about Trump every day, Democrats call them "useful idiots."

Whether or not the SW pilot said “Let’s go Brandon” or instead “Let’s go Braves,” he still offended. Because some people need to be offended —that’s where the power and money are now.

His real offense was in opening his mouth and veering off script. In future, “Let’s go!” without more will be sufficient as a Trumpist dog whistle to provoke and justify gales of outraged tears.

They apologized BEFORE they started their investigation. So actually your position doesn't seem to add up. You have no more proof of what happened, yet you did not

Go ahead and believe Southwest if you want to, they're the same airline that claimed they cancelled thousands of flights due to weather when it was because of staff not going to work to protest vax requirements. Without question or doubt their apology was a CYA action based on some crazy AP reporter, who as I said, insisted they open a locked cockpit to question the pilot. They assumed the facts, as did you.

I shouldn't have used the word "apologize" there. I meant: and used it immediately to end the controversy.

Yeah, I have no proof. Thanks for admitting you have none either. It's just an idea of what could have been said, just like the idea that someone else suggested he express encouragement for a little sick boy named Brandon who's on the plane and he had no idea of the other meaning. We can make shit up all day. Wake me up when you have actual info

Yeah, I shouldn't have either. They haven't really apologized. They stated their position and policy. But again, nothing they said ended the controversy. It's still out there. They simply stated their position, not the facts of the incident. They have said they will investigate. My bet is they will never announce the results.

Give me a break. You posted and commented as if it was confirmed fact. First.

"How can anyone qualified to be trusted with the lives of people who willingly strap themselves into seats inside an inescapable tube in the sky imagine that he can impose any sort of political statement on them, let alone a partisan taunt?

It's such a failure of judgment! It's one thing for ordinary citizens to think they're smart or cute or gutsy or whatever to say "Let's go Brandon," but do it on your own time, not to captive listeners who are dependent on you. What jackasses people have come to be!"

It's funny the way some people view outsourcing, deindustrialization, mass immigration, business-friendly work visas, and financialization. as "free human beings." Some of the earliest critiques of capitalism were made by people like Thomas Jefferson and the southern agrarians more broadly. Even their ideological opponents, like John Adam and James Madison, came to be extremely skeptical of capitalism as it developed in America. Jefferson was highly skeptical of wage labor being compatible with liberty. Thomas Paine addressed concerns about private property and wealth inequality in Agrarian Justice in 1797, more than 20 years before Karl Marx was even born.
