"Why Are Moms Like Me Being Called Domestic Terrorists?"

Asks Maud Maron (at Common Sense with Bari Weiss).

I am a mother of four, a criminal defense attorney and a lifelong liberal who is deeply concerned about the direction of New York City’s public schools. I’ve been outspoken about my views, along with an untold number of frustrated parents. For that, the FBI is considering using the PATRIOT Act against me....

The FBI is responding to the National School Boards Association, which pointed to troubles like:

... prank calls; a single individual in Ohio yelling a “Nazi salute in protest of masking requirements”; another individual in Washington State whose disorderly conduct prompted the board to call a recess; “spreading misinformation” online, and disorderly conduct arrests.

Maron has herself served on a school board (in Manhattan):

I chaired many school board meetings attended by hundreds of parents often voicing contentious opinions around the highly charged topics of admissions and curriculum. Ultimately, I became the board chair. As a school board chair, I was harassed, bullied, smeared and subjected to online campaigns demanding my resignation. Activists who disagreed with me regularly showed up at my school board meetings.... Yet never in my wildest dreams would I ever have considered their activism to be something best handled by the FBI....

Maron also takes on the contention that Critical Race Theory is not being taught in schools, which was part of the NSBA’s complaint. They used the standard talking point that CRT is "a complex law school and graduate school subject well beyond the scope of a K-12 class." I like Maron's retort:

Are you kidding me? I read the classic Critical Race Theory textbook in law school. I would much prefer to have my children read that impenetrable tome than be subjected to the ideological grooming that takes place in their classrooms — a phenomenon that I and parents across the country witnessed over Zoom this past year-and-a-half.

Why should our children — in class, in front of their peers — be required to discuss their sexual orientation? Give their pronouns? Renounce their “privilege”? Plumbing children for this kind of personal information is grotesque and inappropriate, and it has everything to do with the worldview of Critical Race Theory...

[F]ew elected officials have publicly aligned themselves with parents — rich and poor and of every color — who are outraged that their children are being denied a decent education by ideological zealots. There will be no waivers for these moms and dads. These people — who dare to question the conventional wisdom, who are not so quick to submit to the powers that be — have no friends in high places. Instead, they are being treated as possible criminals....

There is a reason corrupt people gravitate towards government. There are reasons shitty people support corrupt regimes like this.

The Biden Regime is making every effort to educate everyone on just how terrible people who gravitate towards government power are.

Because the marxists/LLR's need to ramp up persecution of domestic political enemies to
- Hide the incompetence of Biden's Earpiece's marxist/LLR policies
- Facilitate crackdowns on speech of opposing political views thru their fascist alliance with Big Tech and make permanent the use of anti-terrorist laws against those opposing the democraticals for any reason
- Create new "Two Minutes of Hate" targets for the democraticals Woke Mob/antifa/LLR allies
- Ensure ever greater funding transfers to Woke/Mob/LLR "insiders" who profit from such anti-American CRT programs, with the LLR's beloved Merrick Garland's immediate family at the top of that list

Merritt Garland's son-in-law owns the company that publishes and distributes the CRT and Equity material to schools. A 30% rise in the murder rate is bad but doesn't effect him or cost his family any money so it's just a Republican Pounce topic. This education issue, however, has the potential to hurt his daughter's family income.

Where does the writer get the idea that she is a target of an FBI investigation? This sounds like the usual right wing media hysteria. Is there a single case anywhere in America where someone has been targeted in an FBI investigation for simply making a social, political or legal point in front of or to a school board?

Which brings us to “Critical Race Theory.” Which the writer seems to concede isn’t actually being taught in her local schools. This must thrill Chris Rufo, the self-made national ringmaster of the anti-CRT circus. He wanted to take the basic definition of CRT out of any specific text or teaching, and transform it into a catchphrase that can be weaponized whenever any racial justice notion arises in any educational setting.

This blog post is one of the very best examples of that, that I have seen in quite a while.

The writer had some college/graduate level experience with at least one actual CRT text, and admits that that wasn’t being used in a K-12 school. It was some other vaguely offensive things having to do with racial equity discussions. She might just have some valid complaints in that regard. I don’t have a lot of understanding why any schools would feel the need to do any instruction at all, of the kind that she describes.

But she has blown her credibility by reverting to these stupid FNC/Rufo/Trump memes relating to “Critical Race Theory” and the FBI.

For example, our own pro-marxist LLR Chuck who posts one marxist/dem lie right after another, and does so happily.

For instance, LLR Chuck claims there is no inflation at the moment, no American hostages in Afghanistan, no antifa (its just a "theory"), the economy is booming, no supply chain issues, etc.

As you can see, there really isn't a single topic or policy for which LLR Chuck is not willing to tee up whatever the latest talking points are, regardless of the actual facts.

By itself, this terroristic and tyrannical threat is reason enough to impeach or fire everyone involved, strip them of their pensions, put them on trial for official oppression under color of law, and lock them up for a decade or more. Our noble ancestors would have tarred and feathered and whipped the King’s men for this, if not hanged them outright.

My kids are long since grown but I am inclined to go down to my local school board meeting and make a noisy nuisance of myself just on principle. I am Spartacus!

Interestingly, I'm seeing here in Northern Virginia that this is causing moderates to back off on the support of Terry McAuliffe. He should have cruised to victory, but I'm hearing more and more that people will not support him because of the school issues. Accordingly, TMc is amping up the ads tying Youngkin to Trump. And these are somewhat effective - but some have indicated they will vote for Princess Blanding, even though she is even farther to the left than Terry. Still, we need someway to send a message to the Biden administration and the Democratic party that you can not and should not punish dissent.

This was a terrible tactical error.

Hey Howard, the FBI’s official website announced it — you can find Harland’s directive at justice.gov; Time magazine reported it, and Merrill Garland goes into extensive detail about his plans in the New York Times.

Use Khan online to teach your kids math; use OLD versions of the Norton Anthologies to teach them reading and writing. Do make them read books. It actually helps the eye muscles. There are tons of wonderful materials online. Make a collective school with neighbors teaching what they know.

Many hands make work light. I learned far more out of school than in it. And it will keep your own minds nimble! Win win. In Atlanta I knew some folks who homeschooled and sought out a few deprived kids to join the group. It was lovely for everyone. And in Florida, we took turns doing wheelchair aerobics with elderly folks (lift ‘em if you got them, one lady liked to yell) for sociology and gym. We wrote their oral histories and helped them move their bodies. There is learning everywhere. Hell, I’d tutor any kid who showed up at my door, and I’m constantly giving books away. Retired school teachers are a treasure. Ditto nuns.

This seems deliberately obtuse. The way to chill speech instantly everywhere is to issue a memo such as Garland’s, asserting Federal jurisdiction and Federal interest in local governance of schools. The likely process for getting the FBI to open a file (secretly) on anyone foolish enough to ever again ask a question of their school board regarding CRT and gender dysphoria, will be for the school board to send an email to the local police station (cc: nearest FBI office) alleging that they feel threatened by the subject matter of the question; or the words in which it was expressed; or the persistence with which it was posed; or because it’s Wednesday. That secret snitch process will lead to a request by the police and/or FBI for a “friendly interview” —and anyone foolish enough to consent to it, without a good criminal lawyer present, is fair game for an exemplary persecution.

Simple. Terrifyingly so.

Krumhorn,

My husband (a long-suffering public school teacher in OR) has to teach, in two days' time, a one-day course called something like "Growing Your Brain." It has a bunch of PowerPoint slides (what course today doesn't?), and one bunch is about nature vs. nurture. The correct view -- according to the rubric -- is of course that nurture is everything and nature nothing. There's no evidence presented for this, and indeed all the actual evidence says that nature and nurture both matter. But he's required to present the view encapsulated in this ridiculous PowerPoint presentation. (Which, after that point, goes into discussions of the solar system, with a hilarious patch saying "omit this slide," over and over again. But not before I saw the item that "Jupiter is the largest object in the Solar System," which would seem to omit, er, one considerable object :-) )

These people are, well, pretty stupid. It hurts to see them when so many of the actual students are brilliant. They aren't actually going to believe my husband if he says there's no nature, only nurture, and he will feel like a miserable liar if he's made to say it. But none of that matters. At all.

May I suggest that we stop using the term CRT?

Clintonian liars like Terry McAuliffe are trying to confuse people by saying "CRT" isn't being taught because it may not specifically be the racist bullshit from Ibrahim Kendi. In other words, they are playing the definition game.

What parents are objecting to is the "Anti-Whiteness" bullshit. Marxists are again manipulating racial conflict to promote anti-capitalism and a top down controlled (by the intellectual elites) society.

Althouse posters who support the McAuliffe position seem to be easily and willingly fooled.

As soon as I saw the usual deep state worshippers like Andy McCarthy praise Garland and swear up and down the DOJ would be safe in his hands I immediately knew Garland would take us right over the "Muh Norms" (The call of the wild "NeverTrumper") parapet and into Stasi-canyon.

And that Garland would do it every bit as joyfully as LLR Chuck represents the interests of the far left at Althouse blog.

Where does she get the idea? Ah Chuckles, often wrong, but never in doubt.

Read the danged letter from the National School Board Association--see what Merrick Garland and his DIJ have announced.

I've appeared before the local school board on behalf of parents at my kid's elementary school--protesting the reassignment of a popular principal. I've sat in numerous school board meetings over the last 30 years where parents or teachers or "concerned citizens" of various stripes have challenged actions by the Board. There's often more heat than light in those challenges--but it's part of a long understood process. And it sure isn't or wasn't "domestic terrorism". People, understandably, get hot when their kid's welfare is concerned. But it's not "terrorism".

Maron provides a list of offences she claims is representative of the worst actions attributed by the NSBA to the alleged “domestic terrorists”. Here they are again, and, although I’m not a lawyer, I’ll insert some comments.

prank calls [is that even a crime? Bad news for Bart Simpson]; a single individual in Ohio yelling a “Nazi salute in protest of masking requirements”[I suppose another non-crime, even if not meant ironically, expect maybe if in the circumstances it was an inducement to violence]; another individual in Washington State whose disorderly conduct prompted the board to call a recess[a possible crime, but so much would depend on circumstances – did the individuals conduct disrupt the meeting and prevent others from being heard, or was it just speech uncongenial to the Board]; “spreading misinformation” online [Is that a crime now? Maybe I better stop posting this stuff under my own name], and disorderly conduct arrests.

I wondered if this was really representative of the NSBA’s letter, so I looked it over. The letter is, maybe, a bit more substantial than the above list implies, but if so not by a great deal. If you haven’t already, take a look at it, as Maron urges. There are some actual instances of violence sighted, but not many, and not much in the way of details when they are. There is a lot of talk about mobs, but not much actual mob behavior is related. There is lots of conduct which, even if true, (and the NSBA letter is only giving us once side of the story) is rude or aggressive, not criminal or threating. And we get this “another individual prompted the board to call a recess because of opposition to critical race theory” which makes me doubt the NSBA’s commitment to free speech and fair play more than it make me question the undescribed actions of that individual.

It's not just the ideological craziness in the lower grades, although that is bad enough. In NYC, DeBlasio and the usual subjects (including the teachers' unions and many of the wokest teachers) want to end all 'gifted and advanced' programs, supposedly because the programs end up being disproportionately heavy with Asian kids and disproportionately light on Black kids. That is classic Kendi-style CRT, in which any disparities are deemed prima facie proof of racial discrimination. A bit inconvenient that the racial discrimination is mostly Asian/Black, but, hey, whatever. The fanciest private schools are all mouthing the same silliness, but they are mostly filled with affluent (and mostly but not entirely white) kids, their calling-card is the 'gifted and advanced' stuff and very varied language and other offerings, and those schools all know that if they don't get the kids into the 'right' colleges, no one will be willing to pay the tuition ($50,000+ in most of them). So for those schools, it's mostly just lefty virtue-signaling, the sort of thing you see at the major corporations and the like here (where it is also mostly just virtue-signaling).

DeBlasio can't get rid of the specialized high schools where admission is by competitive exam -- Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, etc. -- without state approval, and despite unified Dem control of NYS gov't, that hasn't been forthcoming. But the continuing push to dumb-down the City schools is having the predictable results, as parents are desperate to get their kids in charter schools, parochial schools or really any alternative to the local public school.

The political impact in NYC has been to divide the Dem party between the uber-lefties who dominate that party at the upper reaches (and are heavily Manhattan based), and the old-time Dems -- trade union families, Jewish voters, older voters, and lots and lots of parents. The reaction in the Asian community has been especially dramatic, since their kids are the targets of so much of this. Affluent parents of all races don't use the public schools here, which is why the NYC public schools are so heavily populated by minority students except in the neighborhoods such as the Upper East and West Sides of Manhattan, the West Village, etc. that are so expensive to live in that there are very few minority students in the local schools. A topic rarely discussed among the wokest is that the residential areas of NYC remain sharply divided along racial lines, with not much black/white mixing in residential terms.

That division was on display, in a manner that was hard to miss, in the Dem mayoral primary, in which Eric Adams came out on top, but just be a small margin (primaries here being typically low-turnout affairs in which the highly-motivated or very partisan tend to dominate). Anyone's guess where Adams will come down on all of this, but it's fair to say that (i) most of his voters were outer-boro, not Manhattan based; and (ii) the outer-boro voters are the ones must outraged by what's happening in the schools.

So, stayed tuned, as the wokest Dems continue to push that parties way past the breaking point on these issues. NY has a long history of third (and fourth and fifth) parties forming when the main parties cease to serve the needs of specific populations. So it may not be the Reps who benefit directly (they will likely benefit at the margins and very much indirectly). But it's easy to see an Asian-focused party, for example, forming, and the erosion in Dem support among Jewish voters is continuing apace (the very orthodox are already voting heavily against the Dems). The Dems are fools to underestimate the anger in those communities, but that's what they're doing in NY (and Texas an Florida and Pennsylvania ...). Couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.

They’ve always pretended to be ideology of empathy and fairness. So, now they’re exposing themselves as hate filled totalitarians and we have to ask “why?”

This is either a massive strategic error on the part of the American Left or they believe they’ve already won.

That should scare the fuck out of us.

I started looking at the links in the footnotes but quit after about half of them. They all seemed to be the same, white parents complaining about masks and CRT. Has anyone checked all of the links? Do any of them mention the parents who are yelling at the school boards because they (the parents) are opposed to bringing resource officers back into the schools? This is the type of parent/school board conflict that's been happening in my city, so I was kind of surprised (at first) to hear that the DOJ was going to crack down on those disruptions. I stopped being surprised when I realized it was the other disruptions that they had a problem with.

Thank you, Narr. He is struggling. If a student comes up to him today or tomorrow and asks, "Need I come to this thing"? what is he to say? If he's asked, "should I come to this thing," what does he say?

I have left out that this is the day on which students traditionally took the PSATs. Only the district hasn't got funding for them this year, so they aren't being given. So they have this "school day" that used to be PSATs and now has nothing to fill it; hence the frantic void-filling.

We would be going wearily on as usual were it not for the fact that my husband got a legacy six years back; he is not now in the "teach-or-starve" position. He wonders whether he ought to carry on; and by God I wonder with him.

etc.

I was amazed that this response to Chuck's comment took so long to come up. Because that's how they getcha: they lay claim to the high ground of being the one who defines the terms, and then fight exclusively on that ground, regardless of whether the actual disputed territory is elsewhere.

Brought to you by the side whose refrain is always "real communism/socialism has never been tried" and "you can recognize white privilege/fragility by the fact that the accused claims not to have it" and "any disparity in outcome is indisputable evidence of a disparity in de-facto rights, nothing at all to do with an individual's particular circumstances."

And my side, too often, consents to fight on the ground they choose.

I believe one of those complained about in the letter was at a school board meeting to complain about a transgender girl (boy?) raping his daughter. There is an article about it at Redstate. https://redstate.com/bonchie/2021/10/11/horror-in-loudoun-county-implicates-local-and-federal-officials-n455371

Obviously a domestic terrorist!

Yeah, I can understand where the father is coming from. Too bad feminists can't understand it because "intersectionality" prevents their understanding.

One would think that an Attorney General threatening action against critics of CRT would be pretty outrageous by anyone's thinking. We are talking about the federal government threatening to use its power if parents openly object to what their children are being taught. That's a pretty big abuse of power and an incredibly dangerous habit for the executive branch to get into.

This is a good exemplar of why I have such contempt for the Trumpist right. Such loathing disrespect. I hope it comes out in my writing; some of you assure me that it does.

“Greg The Class Traitor” is a repeat offender in the idiocy class. Attorney General Garland’s one-page memo sets forth a plan to have meetings between federal and local law enforcement in every federal district within 30 days. They will consider the issue school board threats, harassment and intimidation. That’s it.

And Greg The Class Traitor turned that into Garland announcing an intention to harass individuals like Maud Maron.

This is TrumpWorld now. It’s all about victimhood. The mainstream media lies to you (while you are fed this very story on the number one rated cable news channel and the leading-circulation newspaper in the country). Big tech is unfair to you (while Facebook’s list of most popular political pages is dominated by right-wing entries). The Deep State is trying to hurt you. LMFAO. And the leaders of BOTH political parties cheat you.

You aren’t conservatives. You’re pussies. Poor, helpless victims.

But there may be some law enforcement inquiries worth making. Personally, I’d think about starting with this seemingly dangerous jackass; he is Mr. Steve Lynch of Northampton, Pennsylvania. A GOP candidate for Northampton County Executive. Talking publicly about summarily “removing” a local school board with “20 strong men.”

No let’s do this. Tell me about anyone like Maud Maron, who has been in any way whatsoever investigated or threatened by the FBI or the DoJ. And when I say “moms like Maud Maron, I mean it the way she did. Moms who are used to being civil in the public square, or in court, as she is an attorney and an officer of the court. Moms who write thoughtful, however disagreeable, op-eds. Who attended school board meetings and who expressed contrarian viewpoints but without resorting to threats, harassment or intimidation.

THAT is our case study. No one “like Maud Maron” has been labeled a domestic terrorist. No one “like Maud Maron” is being threatened with an investigation or prosecution.

Keep going, Chuck. Kerri insisting that until some parent is actually arrested or charged, there is no problem with the USAG's throwing in with, and throwing federal law enforcement agencies behind, local school boards who cannot tolerate parents' verbal objections.

Garland has only said he's going to convene meetings among law enforcement agencies to determine what to do. No problem! Just meetings. Among law enforcement agencies. To determine how to respond to "threats," such as parents' vocal objections to board mandates, that the NASB says ought properly to be viewed as domestic terrorism.

How on earth do you decide that Garland's response is appropriate?

Jamie, if you want to understand why someone like LLR Chuck, who has strongly and explicitly endorsed the idea of letting democraticals win politically at all levels of government for the forseeable future, would decide such a thing, you might want to do a bit of reading of how democraticals and the far left get fake conservatives to post on social media in an attempt to demoralize republicans and conservatives.

Far left activist billionaire Reid Hoffman was forced to admit just that in a court of law not that long ago...........and Hoffman was someone LLR Chuck defended vociferously.....again, for obvious reasons.

The best part of that Whitmer Threatening Letter event? The pushback was so strong given how out of line Chuck's beloved Whitmer happened to be, that in just a few days, in the middle of LLR Chuck's treatise length posts in defense of Whitmer, the Whitmer regime had to retract the letter!

Neither the FBI, nor the DoJ, has issued any statement(s) which label mere complaints about curricula as domestic terrorism. Not to my knowledge, anyway. Are you aware of such a statement? Any declaration or indication of that in any recent instance? Be specific. And don’t try to suggest to me that it looks like the DoJ was reacting to the NASB letter, and the NASB letter, which DoJ didn’t write and which has no force of law, sort of sounded like that.

You just now claimed that the FBI indulged in language that labels complaints about curricula as domestic terrorism. And I am demanding that you show us where you think that happened.

And why wouldn't that be a reasonable correlation? NASB wrote their idiotic letter to Biden no Sept 29 requesting "federal law enforcement" to deal with "threats of violence" directed to personnel in the country's "14,000 public school districts" and Biden's chief law enforcement officer responded on October 4 asserting that they would address "threats of violence" directed to personnel in the nation's "14,000 public school districts".

It's beyond odd that the NASB referenced 14,000 public school districts. I wonder if it might be some other more precise number? Some sources say 13, 452. Others say around 13,800 Yet Garland accepted the NASB number and restated it.

Chuck has been heavily shelled by other commenters, with IMHO good effect. I want to make the rubble bounce a little by pointing out the obvious about Garland’s memo. That is the FACT of it: the fact that it was ever written. It instantly became and will always remain a bureaucratic reality, part of the official record and by its terms requiring attention and action. Not just attention as in a careful reading by the many various parties it expressly invokes, from the FBI to local police and school boards; but action on their part, serious and sustained action to form new working groups and establish new lines of communication to address this emergent threat.

We all know what working groups do: they look for work. So there will be a vast series of secondments and liaisons and convenings of working groups, and delegates, and point persons, and team leaders. And then they will want to get some return on their investment, some recognition of their productivity. So they will start asking school boards to report anything, anything at all, anything that might could be a threat, especially when the working groups mesh one report with the next and look for emergent patterns and possible coordination among parents or critics or simply anyone who doesn’t love CRT. And then they will want to report on actions taken, and how they are sharing the data, and developing best practices for sweating the truth out of some hapless parent who spoke too loudly at the school board meeting.

Chuck doesn’t want to acknowledge that level of reality. It seems absurd that a mere memo could ever conjure up such authoritarian abuse. But it can, and I submit that it bloody well will.

The DoJ memo is just what it said it was; a nationwide convocation of federal/local authorities to look into a rise in threats, intimidation and harassment at school board meetings.

Unlike your previous, phony, lying comment in which you suggested that the FBI was indulging in language which labeled persons with complaints or concerns about school board policies or proposals as “domestic terrorists.”

The term “domestic terrorism” doesn’t even appear in the Garland memo.

So as you say, I am happy to set you straight on that. Again.

Of course you’re like Maud Maron. You will go back to mewling over the NASB letter, even though it has no force of law or policy, because the DoJ memo was so innocuous by its own terms that it didn’t lend itself to the sort of hysterical attention-grabbing that a candidate needs to win an election in NewYork City.

On June 22, Scott Smith was arrested at a Loudoun County, Virginia, school board meeting, a meeting that was ultimately deemed an “unlawful assembly” after many attendees vocally opposed a policy on transgender students.

Again, what was Scott Smith's "crime"? Objecting to the school board allowing boys into the girls bathrooms, where one of them raped his daughter?

Objecting to the school board covering up the rape of his daughter, and sending the boy to a different school where he harmed another girl?

When is it that the FBI is going to look into the "threats, intimidation and harassment" done by BLM protestors?

Let me guess: those crimes don't matter, right?
