"When we were living in our house, if the kids got upset with one another, they’d just storm off into their separate rooms and not speak."

"Now they’ll gather themselves together, rationally discuss their issues and make peace, because they know they can’t get away from one another on the camper."

We're told that's something "Dub said with a laugh" in "What is ‘roam schooling’? ‘Skoolie’ families teach their kids on the road" (NY Post).

Dub is the father in a family with a father, mother, and 3 kids — who home school and do "van life" in their RV.

The TikTok hashtag for this is "#skooliekids" — so you can watch some videos and test your credulity. I'll put a few that I've selected below the fold....

UPDATE: The embedded video was hinky, so I took it out. Just go to the TikTok link and scroll around to see what's there.

My cousin had a significant re-model on his house. He thought it prudent to move his family into the R/V.

Of course, the project went longer than expected, and when the project was completed. The R/V was abandoned like a ghost town. There were half-eaten meals left on the kitchen table.

I always thought it was RE Heinlein, but They say that HL Mencken said...
"A hobo is simply a migratory laborer; he may take some longish holidays, but sooner or later he returns to work. A tramp never works if it can be avoided; he simply travels.”

So, Are these "roam schoolers" Hobos? Or Tramps?

I took the embedded video out. It was messing with the sidebar.

Well, Mr and Mrs Captain Fantastic. Should Anna be concerned that her kids could be plotting to do her in? School bus too, hmm.

I should have said "Captain and Mrs Fantastic".

Such a childhood may be rich in experience but, at least for the adolescent Cracker-that-was, it would have been a living Hell. I loved my family and enjoyed their company, but craved privacy for reading, introspection, listening to music, and… other things.

Love this one. When my finance and I were in college - in the 70s - she was an Ed major and told me about homeschooling. We did it with our kids and my only regret is that we didn't do something like this. We put the kids in public high school - meh. This woman seems so like my wife. I wish I had had more courage.

Reminds me of the Viggo Mortensen movie Captain Fantastic. When your beard gets a foot long and you've been entirely off the grid for months it's probably time to think about going home.

I should have read the comments before posting that.

"Reminds me of the Viggo Mortensen movie Captain Fantastic."

Yeah, me too. One of my favorite movies.

No reason, though, to believe these children are getting the idealized highly sophisticated education the children in the movie are receiving. And those kids were still hurting in many ways.

Also those Capt Fantastic kids were living on 10 acres of land and very physically active. At one point they have to make a road trip, but that's unfortunate and unplanned. The parents didn't have the idea of driving the kids around endlessly. It wasn't about being crammed into a confined space. Quite the opposite.

If parents can figure out a way to do it, homeschooling is the way to go. It's amazing how much knowledge children can soak up when they are not distracted or constricted by the structured schedule of government school. My grandchildren have their basic classes, then get to turn their attention to what interests them most. My 7 year old grandson loves the periodic tables and has pretty much memorized them and can tell you all about different elements, gases and chemicals and what they do. The 13 year old loves math and problem solving puzzles. Field trips can be a walk in the woods to look at and identify plants and trees, planting flower bulbs, or a trip to the library.

Sorry! According to Heinlein, Bums are just lazy people, that laze around, without jobs
So, Tramps are lazy like Bums, but they rove
Hobos rove like Tramps, but don't mind doing a little work (if they have to)
