"2 senators cannot be allowed to defeat what 48 senators and 210 House members want."

Tweeted Bernie Sanders, quoted at Newsweek

Who's doing the "allowing"? All 100 Senators were elected in their state and each holds 1/100 of the power. It's not 2 against 48 but 52 against 48. There's no "allowing" going on, just an accumulation of total votes. The 2 are most certainly allowed to vote the way they choose, representing their state, and it's offensive to speak of not allowing them.

Speaking of Sanders, here's something from Axios:
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) withheld support for a joint statement condemning last weekend's protests against Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) because it also wouldn't include a rebuke of her political views, Axios has learned.....

An email exchange between Senate Democratic leadership aides, obtained by Axios, reveals Sanders withheld his name from a joint statement declaring protesters who followed Sinema into a bathroom — and filmed her while using the restroom — as "plainly inappropriate and unacceptable."

Was Sinema filmed using the toilet? I thought she'd retreated into the space to get away, but find it hard to believe she'd use the toilet under this pressure, unless she had a physical emergency. I realize it is possible in most public bathrooms for someone outside the stall to hold a camera over/under the wall/door of the stall and photograph a person inside. Did that happen to Sinema?

Back to Axios:

Sanders' communications director Mike Casca asked that the statement be edited to include the preface, "While we hope Senator Sinema will change her position on prescription drug reform and support a major [budget] reconciliation bill, ..." An aide to Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who organized the statement, said Booker would not accept the edits.

Good for Booker!

Casca later replied: "Sanders will not be signing, so please cut 'Senate Democratic Leadership Team' from headline."... The statement has not been published. It's currently unclear whether it will run....

On Monday, Biden told reporters he didn't think the protesters' tactics were "appropriate," then added, "but it happens to everybody." The president went on to say, "The only people it doesn’t happen to are people who have Secret Service standing around them. So, it’s part of the process."

Wow. It's just the rough and tumble of politics! Nice way to insinuate that maybe women don't belong in politics. I'd say even if it "happens to everybody," it wouldn't be right to slough it off as "part of the process."

It was quite something to see the actual visual when Biden added that doesn't happen to somebody who has Secret Service protection. The pleased smile that accompanied that observation was kind of creepy.

Sanders has always been a socialist looney (and maybe communist--remember his getaway with his new wife to the USSR and praise of the Soviet Union in 1988?). I am surprised he has gotten such an uncriticized ride from smart people like Glenn Greenwald and Tulsi Gabbard. I suppose it is his anti-war positions that gains their support.

He has strange ideas about what is mine and what is his. He'd make us all poorer claiming it was fairer that way. As a famous American once observed (it was one of the few smart things he ever said), life is not fair.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

I hope their abandonment of decency is widely noted, as Biden’s indecent exit from Afghanistan is tarring his presidency. The touted “return to normal” has turned into a horrifying trend of abnormal behavior and abandonment of values: purposely evacuating random unvetted foreigners while stranding 1000 Americans in a hostile land along with 10,000 nationals who helped us, no respect for a woman’s privacy while replacing the word “woman” in every official communication with “persons with vaginas” (stunning reductionism there eh?), freezing parents out of education and labeling their authentic desire for positive change in schools “terrorism” while blessing actual terrorists with billions in equipment “foreign aid” and safe passage into the Red States on BidenHarris BusLines. The disarray and desperation is too much to list in one place.

But the image of a transactivist chasing a US Senator into a stall should shame these people. Yet it doesn’t. They’re shameless.

""but it happens to everybody."

Let's look at the things that Democrats/Progressives think are AOK because it's just part of the process and it happens to everyone. Plus- you deserve it.

>Doxing you and your family at home.
>Arriving at your house with bullhorns, signs, cowbells, shouting, and approaching/knocking on your home door and windows.
>Following you into a bathroom to 'corner' you and thinking this will get you to change your mind.
>Setting 3-4 city blocks of your city on fire. Destroying businesses, homes.
>Looting businesses because nothing says 'change your mind' like taking Louis Vuitton purses by the armful.
>Throwing paintballs at you, or just spraying you with pepper spray- to get you to change your mind.
>Cold-cocking you just for being.
>Killing you.

All of these things- and more- have been perpetrated on the American people over just the past 16 months by our loving, tolerant, regressive minds on the left.

But the most important thing is just to listen to Bernie Sanders. Take them (the Left) at their word. They tell you exactly who they are and what they want. To Bernie (and this is no surprise to any breathing adult), Bernie sees the Constitution and our political form as rather inconvenient. The Dems are working overtime to remove voter ID, allow national mail ballots- sent to millions of people, no matter their proper citizenship or proper registration, and to allow for ballot harvesting. How you gonna control...er...count all those mailed ballots without harvesting?

The Left wants a majority rule- Democracy as they know it- as long as they can fix the parameters to insure who's got the majority (i.e. California, New York). And as we all know, Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding what's for dinner.

Umm, that's 52 senators, Bernie. I agree, if there were only 50 senators, then 2 of them should not/would not be able to override the other 48. But 48 of 100 doesn't comprise a majority, let alone a strong one. Is he using Socialist math?

Sinema is filmed as she goes into a stall, some time passes, she comes out of the stall, and goes to the sink to wash her hands. Are you suggesting that Sinema was engaged in a little theater? A woman stands in front of the stall and delivers her protest. It plays that Sinema is just going about her business as the protesters follow her around.

The protest and its filming were grossly inappropriate. Other women were also using the restroom and they also appear in the video.

This is a clear example of the left’s view of the primacy of their political outcomes over even a modicum of civility. Everything is political, even human biological needs. How anyone can believe that they care about actual people and not just their concept of what people should be is beyond me. This is precisely why socialism/communism/progressivism is responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths of innocent people in the 20th century. Those people just didn’t fit their image of what people should be. Perhaps they wanted privacy in the bathroom?

I don't see anything pushback from leftist women commentators on this. So, I assume that they really don't care about harassment, only if it's done by the wrong people.
I got a mailshot via TNR yesterday from Physicians for Human Rights PHR calling on the Federation of State Medical Boards to double down on its urging of member boards to revoke the licenses of physicians who knowingly spread misinformation about the coronavirus and what the science says about vaccines and wearing masks. One of their Board members, their vice chair, Deborah Ascheim, tweeted in support of Eric Topols demand in a letter to Steven Hahn, in respect of vaccines that he will not, under any condition, authorize a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine approval before the full Phase 3 completion and read-out of a program.
This is the vaccine program that has, in the UK, saved around 125,000 lives. Topol wanted the FDA to take its time. PHR wants doctors to be stripped of their licences citing science. The hypocrisy is nauseating. And they talk about science and masks as if the experience in Europe (UK, Denmark, etc) is irrelevant. No mask mandates in UK since mid July. Children don't wear masks in class. But PHR wants doctors to lose their jobs if they agree with European countries. Where's the science?
And PHR has Richard Horton, Editor of the Lancet, on its Board. The same Lancet that published the wrong paper on MMR and the paper poo-poohing the lab leak theory of Covid 19 without disclosing the conflicts of interest around the organiser of the paper.
I'm sorry I'm so upset by this, but an organisation called Physicians for Human Rights calling for doctors to lose their jobs is somehow far more nauseating than when politicians do this.

The perps who filmed Sinema (and others) in the restroom committed a class 5 felony under Arizona law, which makes it a crime to record or film anyone peeing in a restroom. The statute, as I read it, covers filming someone going into a stall and using the toilet. It doesn’t require that the camera film inside the stall. The purpose of the statute is, inter alia, to protect people against public humiliation and shame, which was the very point of the film posted by the perps in this case. My only question is, why isn’t the local prosecutor on this case? Actually, that’s a rhetorical question.

1. I use the term "insurrectionist" because it seems to me to be a good, abbreviated description for what happened. Also, because I know that it really bothers people like you.

2. Huh? We're discussing the harassment of Sen. Sinema in a public restroom on the campus of Arizona State, right? (Do I have that right? I never checked, because it seems so totally beside the point.) Was there also some harassment of Sinema at an airport? Does it make a difference, whether invasive harassment occurs at an airport, or in a public restroom in a university building?

3. Your #3 is so completely deranged, I don't even know what you are talking about. I'm not sure that I have ever mentioned Senator Bernie Sanders in any Althouse blog comment. If I did, I expect that I was commenting on how much I hoped that Sanders would not get the nomination, because (a) I disagree with him on almost everything, and (b) I'd be terribly afraid that he could not beat Trump.

4. BONUS POINT! I just wanted to use this comment to further stomp on what a psychotically cruel, loutish dickhead Donald Trump is. When Trump was doing his insurrection speech on January 6, his exact quote after seeing the viral video of Senator Romney being harassed at the Salt Lake City airport was, "I wonder if he enjoyed his flight in."

So, compare. President Biden sees Senator Sinema being harassed by people who aren't exactly Biden supporters, and says in a serious tone, “I don’t think they’re appropriate tactics, but it happens to everybody...” Understanding that that riffing was far too equivocal to meet the moment, Biden comms officials then went further with unequivocal condemnations. End point being; Biden condemns that harassment.

Meanwhile, then-President Trump sees Senator Romney harassed by people who are explicitly Trump supporters and laughingly says at a rally, "I wonder if he enjoyed his flight in."

That's it. That's the comparison. It's as pure, as crystalline a comparison as I can imagine. Biden stumbled a bit in expressing a genuine and appropriate concern. While Trump's expression was nothing less than sociopathic bile.

This action against Sinema, which Chuck is busy defending here, is part and partial of the left's usual behavior. He says "But look at how Romney was treated!" And then gloats that those who only demanded accountability from Romney are on the "no-fly list" while zero--ZERO!-- has happened to any leftist, ever, for physically attacking a Republican. Hodkinson is dead solely because a brave police officer killed him. If not, I'm sure Chuck would be here demanding his release or celebrating it.

Just like nothing will happen to these people who attacked Sinema.

Because as Chuck well knows, laws don't apply to Democrats. Right?

"Were there incidents of Trump-resistance protesters doing the same sort of harassment? This NPR story is imho a rather good summary of the only three incidents I know about:"

What else do you see down in that hole in the sand?

Setting that aside, and the fact that you think NPR is a trustworthy source, why do you need more than three?

Also: "I would condemn..." In hindsight, you can do everything perfectly!

"It is possible that we are not all that far from the federal government just ignoring the requirement that a majority in both houses of Congress vote yea for a bill in order for it to pass."

Why not. Trump and his constitutional scholar buddy John Eastman thought that Pence should ignore the electoral vote in the so-called "disputed" states.

"POINT! I just wanted to use this comment to further stomp on what a psychotically cruel, loutish dickhead Donald Trump is."

That, in a nutshell, is the problem. Instead of just condemning the intrusion of the Senator's personal space, you decided to (yet again) remind people about Orange the Clown. Guess what, Biden and the Democrats are the ones actually in charge in Washington. Their words and actions actually effect people's lives. By bringing up Trump, you are making what happened to the Senator seem less onerous than it is. The past is the past, it's the shitty present we have to deal with.

By the way; the jackasses who were yelling at Romney in the airport and on the plane have been put on a no-fly list:

The jackasses yelling at Sinema are not on the have permission to be in the country list.

Remember the good old days when Obama would announce, “That’s not who we are!”

When they went #2, Sinema went #1.

I could relate a story about me in a Minneapolis Airport in the mid -1990's.
I was sitting in a stall, when next to me, a person entered, and gave the "two taps".

I won't say it was a Senator, but the wingtips and pinstripe pants sure looked expensive.

So, Jim, what's your allowed remedy for when Democrat "vote counters" steal an election? If your answer is "there is no allowed remedy", then you can take your whine and FOAD

Who's doing the "allowing"?

Given his advanced age and his unrepentant Marxism, Bernie probably thinks it's Stalin.

Maybe Brezhnev.

No, I've got a pretty high, nearly Althousian-level tolerance for free speech. I'm just not accepting the notion that people can be harassed in restrooms or in secured, limited-space places like airport gates or on airliners

So, leftists going to people homes to "protest": ok
Or, to sum up more clearly: leftists doing anything to anybody: Perfectly fine
Rightists doing anything to anybody: Wrong

Chuck, let us know when you've actually done something against the people harassing KS, like called for them to lose because of their disgraceful behavior. Until then, you've got nothing

Maybe “the process” should change? We really need to clean house on just about every level of government, and elect an entirely new group. I mean how could it possibly be any worse?

Did this page suddenly lose some posted comments?

I cannot see a couple of mine; one of which contained this .url:

https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6329595&postID=4912567555741129322

That is the link to the Althouse comments page when she blogged the Sarah Huckabee Sanders/Red Hen restaurant kefuffle. And I posted the comment that I agreed with Althouse, and that we NeverTrump Republicans weren't pulling those kinds of stunts.

I for one am pleased that LLR Chuck has formally come clean on his left wing democratical political orientation.

Chuck's 6 straight years of 100% alignment with all things democratical made that perfectly clear long ago of course, but transparency is always appreciated.

What a surprise that the Democrats are using the No-Fly List as a way to punish their political enemies. Who would have thunk it.

Do you guys thinks she's hot?

It is noteworthy that LLR Chuck, during a gin and tonic soaked weekend posting bender, wanted the entire Trump WH Communications shop dragged before a Washington DC Grand Jury to answer questions relating to........(wait for it) .....(wait for it) .....Sarah Huckabee Sanders baking......pecan pies!

LOL!

Althousians will recall LLR Chuck called Sarah Sanders a bald-faced liar for claiming to have baked pecan pies.

Apparently, and to this very day as LLR Chuck has never retracted his insane accusation, our pro-marxist LLR Chuck still believes, passionately, Sarah Sanders cannot bake pecan pies.

This LLR Chuck meltdown literally lasted for days!

Good times, good times.

There’s a book detailing the history of a hippie commune in Vermont called We Are As Gods, by Kate Daloz. One of the episodes in that book describes how a young Bernie Sanders joined their commune in 1971, but they had to kick him out because he didn’t want to do his share of the chores — all he wanted to do was talk politics.

He apparently hasn’t changed.

(The book is available via the Althouse Amazon portal.)

IMAO, the most important thing about Bernie's statement is the part that isn't there.

Sanders refers to the Democrats as "people."  The Republicans don't make the cut.

The history of the 20th Century was full of totalitarian political movements describing their political opponents as non-people, and then attempting to exterminate them.  People get respect, but "vermin," "insects," "rats," etc. get death.

Add to this his refusal to condemn the harassers because the statement didn't condemn Sinema's politics, and he has destroyed the considerable respect I had for him as an honest man whom I disagreed with politically.  This is totalitarianism.

Wow. It's just the rough and tumble of politics! Nice way to insinuate that maybe women don't belong in politics. I'd say even if it "happens to everybody," it wouldn't be right to slough it off as "part of the process."

Now that's a diabolically clever way to demonstrate that calls for civility are always bullshit.

Comrade Bernie is no doubt nostalgic for the good ole days when the Politburo would just issue the orders and things would get done chop-chop!
