"I woke up at 6 a.m. feeling the kind of ambient half-hunger that I always tolerate for way too long."

"Not to be dramatic, but this is something I genuinely hate about myself — I always wait too long to eat, and I inevitably get into a bad mood before finally fixing the problem. My wife Alice rescued me with yogurt. She put all kinds of stuff in there that would never occur to me, like honey, almond shavings, plum slices, and a syrupy jam made out of sour cherries....  I got hungry for lunch around noon, but again waited like 90 minutes to do anything about it. Once I hit a breaking point, I needed something fast and potent, so I made myself three soft-boiled eggs using a Japanese device my friend David gave me...."

This seems Very Much, along the lines of: "Dear? Fix me Sammich, will you?"
or, if you prefer
"Oh! Thanx for fixin' me a Sammich, Honey"

He should try vacationing in Ethiopia or the Sudan.

There is a lot of stupid and misleading diet garbage coming out in the media recently.

Carbs are poison. If you are living on a carb based diet you are going to have mood swings and insulin spikes that make you tired and feel bad.

The truth is out. We were meant to live off of fat and some protein. It is just a healthier way to live.

We are seeing the processed carb industry flail and shriek. Everyone who actually removes carbs as their diet base will feel the difference. A lot of people want to be miserable and will go back. But most will realize how much better they feel and how much better life is without carbs.

When I wake up at 6 a.m. it with an ambient half-need to take a piss.

I have been trying out periodic fasts lately. I wouldn't recommend it if you are carb based. Just continue turning into a cow.

The benefits of autophagy and higher HGH levels are undeniable and you can feel it.

It is probably too late for Joe Biden to turn around his dementia. But they are already finding connections between insulin resistance and a huge number of degenerative diseases.

It remains unclear if you expect us to laugh or cry at these drama queens (a term used without regard or interest in the guy’s (and really I don’t know this either from the context) orientation (a word itself which may be out of favor)) that you have such a knack for garnering from your reading list.

People take the "well examined life" meme much much too far.

I can't believe this was turned into a published article for NY Magazine.

LOL what is wrong with these people? If you're hungry, eat something, even if it's just a microwave pretzel or half a bag of stale potato chips. Sitting around and whining about it it ridiculous. Typical NYT article. If you want room service check into a high end hotel.

I've been an "intermittent faster" (restricted time period everyday) for the past few years, trying to eat between 11am and 7pm. It's worked great, but with the pandemic, I have leaned back into classic carb-heavy comfort foods again -- think pizza, pasta, potatoes, rice, ice cream. Thankfully, I'm still very close to my driver's license weight. I'm trying to get back to my less sugar, less simple carbs diet. But, I have learned that it's OK to indulge every once in a while.

RE: this author's story, is his life really this complicated? Old school "first world problem."

I think one of the reasons why the nation is so fat is because of the problematizing of hunger. If you eat every time you are hungry and are anything like me, you will gain weight. At least for me, hunger is my body's way of telling me it is utilizing its fat stores. If I don't feel hungry for long periods of time during a day, I don't lose weight. Being hungry sometimes is normal.

His name ain't Joe Biden.

"a syrupy jam made out of sour cherries...."

Consider the following as a public service.

Have been exploring dried fruits as of late. There are lots of varieties and variables. Tried dried sour cherries for the first time yesterday and for the first couple of seconds thought oh, kinda like raisins. Then BOOM! Intense cherry flavor.

Sounds to me like his wife simply should have put a pacifier in his mouth.

Come to think of it, she did!

And then the NYT gave him the attention he sought.

"Alice came home with a vat of white rice from Hancos, and she let me eat her leftovers. Ordinarily a vat of rice wouldn’t taste like anything, but Alice dusted it with some nutritional yeast."

A vat is a liquid measure and dry measure equal to a hectoliter in the metric system, which contains 26.4 standard U.S. gallons. I can but wonder how Alice transported the rice.

That is indeed a whole bunch of eating by two people of just plain white rice - even when prepared by a good Vietnamese restaurant in Brooklyn, and served with or without a large amount of nutritional yeast dust.
