From the Wikipedia article "Perpetual stew," which I'm thinking about this morning... after the Senate voted to allow witnesses at the Trump trial and I think I overheard from the TV that I am not watching that the trial could go on for months. Months? Why not years? Why should it ever end? Keep it seething and quietly simmering forever! Why end it and only create the need to start anew with a third impeachment, a fourth impeachment, a fifth impeachment? Just keep this impeachment going, now and forever, one and inseparable...
I'm curious enough about the William Gibson reference that I bought the Kindle version so I could search for it. Alas! There's only one "soup" in the book and that's not it. No "stew," no "potage," no "chowder"... Yes, I can read the book, I know.... and, of course, that's a better use of my time than watching the pot.
UPDATE: "House managers drop call for witnesses after Trump lawyers agree to admit Herrera Beutler’s claims" (NYT). Read that headline carefully. It doesn't mean that the lawyers admit HB's claims are true, just that they agree that her statement can be admitted as evidence. The statement is that Kevin McCarthy said that — while the riot was ongoing — Trump said over the telephone that the rioters were "more upset" about the election than McCarthy was.

Now do sherry!
Yes, keep the trial going. Make Republicans vote for impeachment or else they will be held captive forever. And this would be good for the country; fewer laws, less corrupt government.
Dyer's Burgers in Memphis famously has reused the same grease for over a century (straining it every night). When they moved to a new location fifty years ago, they staged a parade through the city around the transportation of the tank of grease.
Stone Soup Impeachment
Some travelers come to a village, carrying nothing more than an empty cooking pot. Upon their arrival, the villagers are unwilling to share any of their food stores with the very hungry travelers. Then the travelers go to a stream and fill the pot with water, drop a large stone in it, and place it over a fire. One of the villagers becomes curious and asks what they are doing. The travelers answer that they are making "stone soup", which tastes wonderful and which they would be delighted to share with the villager, although it still needs a little bit of garnish, which they are missing, to improve the flavor.
The villager, who anticipates enjoying a share of the soup, does not mind parting with a few carrots, so these are added to the soup. Another villager walks by, inquiring about the pot, and the travelers again mention their stone soup which has not yet reached its full potential. The villager hands them a little bit of seasoning. More and more villagers walk by, each adding another ingredient. Finally, the stone (being inedible) is removed from the pot, and a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed by travelers and villagers alike. Although the travelers have thus tricked the villagers into sharing their food with them, they have successfully transformed it into a tasty meal which they share with the donors.
If enough people around where I live would keep a perpetual stew going then we'd have a lot fewer turkey vultures.
Usually I can only go without washing my cast iron frying pan for a month at most before something sticks. But that may change now that I have learned that lard is kind of a healthy fat, well a lot healthier than butter anyway. Lard, chicken fat, bacon fat, residue of sautéed spinach...
“Flavorful” and “Odiferous” could easily describe the same dish, BTW.
If Trump is acquitted and violence erupts (which has been alluded to) this can be blamed on Trump for not allowing himself to be convicted, thus forming the basis for the third impeachment.
Usually cooking a hamburger in it is what makes me wash it after. For some reason eggs fried in grease that smells of hamburgers is just too much for me.
Perpetual stew, also known in Liverpool as "bubble and squeak".
I have read one William Gibson book, The Peripheral. It was recommended to me by a commenter on this very blog (Ann-I-Am, I believe). It was a darn good read. Quirky, but not gratuitously so. I will read it again.
Perpetual stew, or: How many times can the democrats masturbate into the same unwashed sock?
I am Laslo.
It's a great way to make stock. Reduce the liquid until it's almost gone and then top it off. Keep doing that for about 12 hours, and you end up with a dark gelatinous stock. Water is just the medium for extracting the collagen out of the bone marrow and connective tissue.
The Trump team navigated House Managers to closing statements—which are going on now.
And it is horrible....
William Gibson Bridge Trilogy. Idoru is #2. #1 Virtual Light. #3 All Tomorrow's Parties. Read #3 a while ago. There was a bridge, not sure about soup though.
Don't the best French Onion Soups reduce the soup multiple times?
If Republican senators acquit Trump, they will own the violence that follows -Washington Post

We may not know with any certainty until LLR-lefty Chuck once again "graces" us with an appearance...assuming he can find the time given hus round the clock defense and praise for Man-Boy Cultist.
I suspect he will indeed tear himself away briefly...but then thats just me.

Exit Question: How many gin and tonics would it take for you to publicly defend child predators?
Asking for a "lawyer" "friend" in Michigan.
If you read about how Parliament overthrew Charles I, it’s all in there, everything from an Adam Schiff type inventing bizarre new legal theories to invent crimes he "investigated" to bullying other MPs with violent mobs.
Idoru is a good book, but not Neuromancer good. It made up for Virtual Light, which is kind of weak.
"If Republican senators acquit Trump, they will own the violence that follows -Washington Post"
I thought this had to be some fine parody, TinVT, but, once again, one can't parody the reality any longer. Wow.
Next, WaPo will put up a picture that says "If you don't convict Trump we will shoot this dog."
Althouse!
Someone has to say it: your blog is a perpetual stew.
"If Republican senators acquit Trump, they will own the violence that follows -Washington Post"
But aren't Trump spporters the violent ones, as opposed to the mostly peaceful types who would object to his acquittal?
Sebastian wins the thread. Brilliant observation.
Gibson's more recent The Peripheral, is better than anything he's written since the Sprawl trilogy.
This is awesome. Trump’s no-name lawyers are schooling the ‘elite’
Too bad that Romney the Weasel and Beto O'Sasse aren't smart enough to understand it, even if they had integrity enough to follow the law, the Constitution and the facts.
Sebastian @ 2:09: what you said.
Alternative metaphor: eternal poker game. But I think “stew” nails it.
"Someone has to say it: your blog is a perpetual stew."
I'll try to keep it going for 45 years then. Until 2049. It's possible! I will only be 98.
I made soup today. A broth made last night from a store-bought rotisserie chicken... heated and poured on top of sauteed onions, carrot, celery, and green beans... add some canned tomatoes and simmer... add the cut-up leftover chicken... served with Parmesan. This was a nice low-carb lunch on a day when the temperature is still not above zero and we're told the wind chill is -21°.
"A broth made last night from a store-bought rotisserie chicken" = from the bones after the meat was removed!
I remember a short story I read many, many years ago about a impecunious graduate student who was entrusted with a pot of hunter's soup while its owner went on a trip. He nursed it along with vegies and sometimes a soup bone from the butcher or even a little meat. Then one day he got extra money, maybe from a poker game? And he put in some noodles. The noodles absorbed so much broth that the soup was ruined. With the owner due back from his trip soon, the desperate student bought a can of beef broth and replaced the ruined soup with the broth. The owner never knew the difference.
Does anybody else remember the story? I think I read it back in the 1980s.
The perpetual stew has been serving up airline food and drinks since a curse was put on her, like the Flying Dutchman.
Trump said over the telephone that the rioters were "more upset" about the election than McCarthy was.
WELL! if THAT'S not an impeachable offense; i'm not sure what Would be one!!!
HB is going to get her ass primaried in 2022. WA-03 is a conservative district that went for Trump twice.
One can mention "rotten pot," the Spanish olla podrida (said to originally have been olla poderida, "powerful pot).
In French, "rotten pot" is potpourri. It probably shouldn't be eaten.
And for our Hebrew friends, there is cholent.
None of these is literally a "perpetual stew."
It can just seem that way sometimes.
Wattana Panich restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand, has continued to maintain the broth from the same perpetual stew for over 47 years (as of 2021)
That would go down good with some bread made from sourdough that's been around since the Gold Rush days (I hope no human lives were sacrificed to save the sourdough from the earthquake and fire).
I was surprised during the fortified election story to discover that sherry actually is fortified wine. I guess it's not quite the same kind they drink on skid row, though.
The Democrat Party is a perpetual stew of grievance and hate.
Is perp stew the same as pot-au-feu? (I know, there's a world of information at my fingertips.)
Narr
Drago, I haven't seen Sherry in years. Still hot?

I recall in Chicago The Ranch (aka Bar-Double R) restaurant had a chili pot rumored never to have been cleaned, just more dumped in every morning. Hung on until the late 80's when it likely fell victim to the resurgence of the Loop and corresponding increases in rent.
I know there are some older commenters who live(d) in Chicago - paging Dr. Mike! - who may have eaten there as well and possibly listened to the newscaster Joel Daly sit in with the band called the Sundowners who played country classics in the evenings.
I'll try to keep it going for 45 years then. Until 2049.
Nice thought, but I think we all understand that Blogger will shut you down for ideological nonconformity long before then.
perpetual witches' cauldron - they should hang one in Capitol rotunda - can also serve as pendulum to prove world rotates around them - at least visitors can learn something about physical reality.
Trump said over the telephone that the rioters were "more upset" about the election than McCarthy was.
I see "more upset" in quotes, but not the word 'rioters'. I would be interested in knowing if he said "rioters" or that is just a descriptor for the protesters that were there that we are supposed to use now. I know that was a really big deal to the Dems during that antifa/BLM riots. Broad brush/fine tip pen.
"I made soup today."
That was almost exactly the soup we made yesterday – minus the tomatoes and plus the juice of a lemon, served with some crusty bread and cheese. Those rotisserie chickens do come in handy.
Trump said over the telephone that the rioters were "more upset" about the election than McCarthy was.
So what?
"Why are they rioting?" "Well, because they're angry that their votes were stolen."
If that's "incitement to riot", then every single person who said something analogous about BLM needs to be in jail right now.
"I don't excuse violence, but I understand why they did this violence" gets you thrown in jail, if what Trump is alleged to have said counts as "incitement to riot".
"Stupid, or evil"?
I think I'll embrace the healing power of "and" here, when discussing the people who pretend Trump should ahve been impeached
Here's the thing about perpetual soups, perpetual flames, perpetual guardians, perpetual memorials: They aren't perpetual as in "never interrupted," they are only perpetual in being maintained and restarted as needed, to keep it going.
If the roadkill raccoon dropped in the perpetual stew is a bit too whiffy, and the soup makes your customers sick, you empty out and clean the pot and refill it with fresh water, fresh herbs, fresh veggies, fresh meat, and continue on with the perpetual stew.
Likewise, when the eternal flame on Kennedy's grave blows out, they relight it. It burns on. The guards at the Tomb of the Unknown work shifts. Memorial busts of ancient Romans now sit it a London museum. Lincoln's statue was pulled down in Illinois because there are idiots alive today that the police won't shoot.
Even Old Faithful has fallen off schedule in recent years. Try to see Steamboat Glacier, even more irregular but spectacular.
>>I know there are some older commenters who live(d) in Chicago
Only an intermittent commenter. I'm within that group, but I don't remember that place.
