Trump got his message out on Twitter.

Transcript here. Excerpts:
I want to be very clear, I unequivocally condemn the violence that we saw last week. Violence and vandalism have absolutely no place in our country and no place in our movement. Making America Great Again has always been about defending the rule of law, supporting the men and women of law enforcement and upholding our nation’s most sacred traditions and values. Mob violence goes against everything I believe in and everything our movement stands for. No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence.... Whether you are on the right or on the left, a Democrat or a Republican, there is never a justification for violence, no excuses, no exceptions. America is a nation of laws....
Now I am asking everyone who has ever believed in our agenda to be thinking of ways to ease tensions, calm tempers, and help to promote peace in our country. There has been reporting that additional demonstrations are being planned in the coming days, both here in Washington and across the country. I have been briefed by the US Secret Service on the potential threats. Every American deserves to have their voice heard in a respectful and peaceful way. That is your First Amendment Right. But I cannot emphasize that there must be no violence, no law breaking and no vandalism of any kind. Everyone must follow our laws and obey the instructions of law enforcement....

What is needed now is for us to listen to one another, not to silence one another....

Trump is now collecting money and soliciting donations to bail out the Capitol insurgents jailed last week.

Might've been nice if he had said that beforehand, but it probably wouldn't have made any difference.

Jack approved it so it worked this time.....

Good speech, can only imagine how it will be twisted into a racist dog whistle

Derp, you see when trump is calling for calm and peace he's really just encouraging his supporters to violently riot. Derp.

Yes, these words should have been said beforehand last week. But the plan to attack the Capitol was already in place. More info coming out. More video/audio. Clearly there were Agent Provocateurs. Clearly there were people who look like Antifa crew, not Maga- and there is a difference- leading the crowds. And apparently they had a plan, and access to the knowledge on where to go and how to coordinate.

Still don't know why there was not a strong law enforcement presence out there. And our incurious press seems to be, well...incurious about it at all. Just...blank stares coming out of the TV. Like freakin stuffed animals. If I knew that there was a great chance for violence, then a LOT of people knew. And it's now known that our FBI knew- why was there nothing set up to prevent any possibility of it? Why no National Guard? No larger Capitol Police presence? No local police presence?

This looks to be too pat. Too arranged. Too organized- from the inside. As the 'fog of war' clears, more will come out. Not that the press will write or talk about it, but the information will continue to come out.

Excellent speech and message. He didn't give this one before the attack on the Capitol because he believed his supporters were there to peacefully protest, as they always have done. To say that he called for violence is a lie, much like the Charlottesville lie.

So now some commenters here and at Powerline are going to call Trump a cuck. Great.

Actually, he said the right thing with the right tone, and I am glad he did it.

I think Trump didn't think through the probable outcome of a march to the Capitol and was surprised at what happened. There were some bad people in that crowd, and mob action is fairly predictable. Go watch The Oxbow Incident, or imagine To Kill a Mockingbird without Atticus Finch on hand, or read about any lynch mob in history.

Gab is a Twitterlike freespeech alternative.

Instapundit says they downloaded President Trumps entire tweet stream going back to the beginning and have it available in Gab.

What is the saying? "The internet views censorship as a bug and routes around it." Something like that.

I'm having trouble getting into my Gab account so can't check. No shenanigans, I don't think. Just overload. They are apparently signing up a million new accounts a day.

I can log in but my feed just sits there loading. I suspect that if I waited long enough it would load but I am not that patient.

I downloaded their browser, Dissenter last night. It uses the same open source kernel as Google Chrome but without copying all your info to Google.

I read that Firefox/Mozilla is going to start censoring speech. I've been using them for 20 years as my primary browser but buh-bye Firefox if this is true.

I also downloaded PGP last night. I suspect that we are going to need strong encryption before too long. I played with PGP back in the 90s with DOS and it is fairly easy to use. This new version should be even easier.

Anyone want to play with it with me? Email back and forth figuring out how to use it? Drop me an email at johnfajardohenry@gmail.com

John henry said...

Forgot the link for PGP:

https://www.openpgp.org/

Back in the early 90s PGP was regulated as a "munition" as was (is?) all encryption software, code books and devices.

You should download a copy now, even if you don't want to use it, in case it gets banned.

Ann, you were right to say Trump should have promised to attend the Inaugural. Among other reasons, his statement that he won't do so might make some of his dubious followers think the event is fair game somehow.

Look it's the no true Scotsman defense:

"No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence. No true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law enforcement or our great American flag. No true supporter of mine could ever threaten or harass their fellow Americans. If you do any of these things, you are not supporting our movement. You are attacking it and you are attacking our country. We cannot tolerate it."

In actual fact, Donald Trump is only half Scottish, IYKWIMAITYD.

Matt Sablan said...

It is, and it isn't. It is a No True Scotsman because Trump can't define who is and is not a supporter of his.

However, Trump is attempting to state he can define who his supporters are and aren't, just like all the times Republicans are routinely asked to denounce David Duke or whoever. So, he's trying to do it in a clumsy way.

He is saying that if you want to consider yourself a supporter of his, you have to have these qualities. He is attempting to define what his supporters should believe and act like. It is less akin to a "no True Scotsman" fallacy than someone saying, "well, if you want to define yourself as Christian, but you reject the notion Jesus and God exist, you're not really a Christian." He's attempting to define "What is a Trump Supporter?" Only, he did it backwards. He should have structured his argument like so: "Trump Supporters believe A, B, and C. If you do not accept those beliefs, you do not meet my definition of a Trump Supporter, and therefore, I reject your claims of support."

It's just like denouncing David Duke or whoever the racist du jour is for Republicans to denounce. He just, as is Trump's nature, totally butchered his explanation.

Amadeus 48 said...

"Look it's the no true Scotsman defense:"

You got a problem with that? People have been using it for years. It is an old an honorable dodge. Do you have something against Scotsmen?

By the way, if you want to see a levitation act, watch Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland. The worse she does, the more popular she becomes.

Matt Sablan said...

I mean, it's just like the left has to accept the guy who shot up the Republicans was one of theirs. That the guy who tried to murder Rand Paul was one of theirs. That Antifa and CHAZ insurrectionists were theirs. The left should accept these True Scotsman into their ranks and accept that they're part of their group. I mean, they've welcomed back Bill Ayers, so why not all the others?

I thought about calling him a puppet. Now that he is saying what they want him to say, they allow him on the little stage. 2 years ago, I went to Kensington Palace in London. There they have a mechanized puppet show that was created for heir presumptive Victoria. That video reminds me of watching that little mechanical theater. Fascinating that it could be done, but otherwise boring as a story and message.

This is all so sad. I wonder if he feels any greater empathy for John McCain now. Because that's what this reminds me of, those films of POWs in Vietnam being forced to read statements in front of the cameras. I expected Trump to start blinking oddly to try and send a secret message.

Well, Mr. President, the presence of violence depends, as usual, on the presence of Democrat Brownshirts.

Anybody who dismisses the probability of a false flag operation at the Capitol needs only to try to remember the Democrats in the House acting this quickly on anything, including Covid relief.

“Forget election fraud. Impeach the Orange Man!”

Did MAGA vandalize Madison, WI? Chicago? Atlanta? Burn Minneapolis and Kenosha? Did MAGA crowds do anything all year, unless provoked by ANTIFA and BLM counter presence which was planned violence? No. None of that. They got together by the tens of thousands, were falsely accused of super spreading COVID, and had fun rallies.

Now we’re supposed to believe the MAGA crowd just started frothing at the mouth, put knee pads and helmets, got their confederate flags out, one holocaust shirt, and the reincarnation of Jim Morrison in horns (who by the way was NEVER a MAGA photo op and ANY rally) and just spontaneously decided to storm the Bastille. Yeah…right.

Has anyone seen Kamala Harris say on national tv that the summers violent protestors should not stop. And “beware”. Here’s the clip:
https://youtu.be/zKLyQld--RQ

That's right," Harris replied. "But they're not gonna stop. They're not gonna stop, and this is a movement, I'm telling you."

"They're not gonna stop, and everyone beware, because they're not gonna stop," she added. "They're not gonna stop before Election Day in November, and they're not gonna stop after Election Day."

"Everyone should take note of that, on both levels, that they're not going to let up — and they should not. And we should not," she concluded.

Just how in the fuck does she get away with that when no one else can even approach that level of incitement without being tarred.

320Busdriver said...

And she worked to actively raise money and bail these insurrectionists out of jail to continue their violent deeds.

How the fuck does that work?

She’s about to be the VP and less than a stroke or MI away from running this place. Jesus Christ!

Yes it is.

It does appear that those laws are selectively applied though. That really needs to be addressed/fixed. Having laws selectively applied is worse than having no laws. If you don't understand why, read Ayn Rand.

Yes PGP and most crypto was considered a munition, for a long time.
I give you long odds the NSA can break any crypto you can get legally.

I give you long odds the NSA can break any crypto you can get legally.

Nobody knows what NSA can do. OTOH, I got interested in crypto back in the early 90s and read quite a bit about it.

First rule of crypto is that it is always breakable.

Second rule is that stronger encryption takes longer.

Third rule is that it is mostly broken because it is not implemented properly. eg; a onetime pad used more than once, insecure storage of passwords, insecure passwords and so on.

But, assuming the third rule is not broken with PGP and a long key length is used, it is unbreakable in any reasonable span of time. As Bruce Schneir says "Trust the math"

PGP and similar public key encryption relies on multiplying ginormous prime numbers then hashing them. There is no shortcut to factoring the product of large primes. It takes a lot of computer horsepower. Since factoring huge numbers is something everyone is looking for a shortcut for, the state of the art is pretty well known.

It is unlikely that the NSA has any better methods. All they have is more powerful and many computers.

So PGP is probably unbreakable in any reasonable amount of time assuming the 3 conditions I mentioned are met.

John henry said...

I probably should have stated that:

First rule of crypto is that it is always breakable given enough time and computing power

Second rule is that stronger encryption takes longer. In the case of PGP that means the length of the key. I believe that currently the key length to be considered "military grade", subject to ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) is 1024.

OTOH, my recollection of PGP (albeit 20 years old) is that it allows you to set any keylength you want. Of course the longer the key, the longer it takes to run so the max will depend on your computer.

PGP creator Phil Zimmerman was charged with illegal export of munitions for selling PGP internationally. To defend himself, he published the source code as a book--book exports being protected by 1st amendment. That persuaded the govt to drop charges. GPG is also good.

So I wondered why Jack would un-ban Trump, who was permanently banned, in order to get out that one message. And there it is, a $.60 bump to TWTR at the close. Then the price continued its decline, having lost 20% since the beginning of the year, yet every major index has steadily grown YTD.

Not only did the get woke to go broke, but they removed their primary draw. They were getting Trump for free, and for the pleasure of saying "You're fired" and laughing it up; it has cost them billions. If they really thought Trump was bad, then they should have been smart enough not to emulate his worse behaviors.

n.n said...

Of course the longer the key, the longer it takes to run so the max will depend on your computer.

Discovering keys (prime numbers) is energy and time intensive.

I have a Gmail account because Sprint required it for an android phone.

I post it here because I prefer not to have searches for my company reveal comments here. Otoh, if you can't find who I am and main email, phone, address, business etc in under a minute, you should not be using the internet. :)

I use it here, I use it to subscribe to mail lists and I use it on my business card as an alternate if they have any problem with my primary.

My "real" email is hosted with my own domain name.

I'm not worried about privacy on the internet I realized more than 30 years ago that there is none. I've always signed my name to every post everywhere since 1989.

It's never been a problem.

I'm interested in pgp again "just in case" I downloaded it, will put it on a thumb drive and through it in a drawer.

I may install it and may play with it but I certainly hope I never need it.
