Fixed that for Prager.

You are correct that a worldview or collection of ideas, in this case mostly bad ideas, do not constitute a religion. And Prager called "leftism" the most dynamic religion, not the fastest growing. The fastest growing religion is islam, and "no religion is better than islam".

If it were that simple, I wouldn't give a damn. It wasn't a mere different belief than mine that killed my mother-in-law - with water - and then fucked my wife to "comfort her" after writing a book saying never do anything extreme during the grieving period.

I swear, people like you should be paid by them for the support.

Speaking of "generations have been indoctrinated since the '70s" - see Levi's reply for a classic example of the cult apologist. Cults are - literally - destroying lives, but there's always a good ol' Levi around to say it's crazy to see and treat them for what they are.

SF's "One Taste" cult is being investigated by the FBI. It's named after a book by Ken Wilber, who's the cult leader for the Clintons, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Anniston, and a whole slew of other fools "playing us" as Rusty said.

I think of San Francisco like Mordor in the Lord of the Rings now.

The Austrian School, which relies on free markets and capitalism to raise the drawbridge was beat down by socialist's at the beginning of the 20th Century and did not get revived until Friedrich Hayek's writings in 1974.

I am not sure what you are referring to as the Austrian school having been "beat down by socialist's at the beginning of the 20th Century." It was still in the process of developing in the early 20th century, and Hayek did not complete his studies at the University of Vienna until the early 1920s. The decline of Austrian economics more occurred in the mid-20th century for a variety of reasons.

Several of the ideas it produced became accepted and were assimilated into contemporary mainstream economic thinking. But more importantly, the economics profession was quickly becoming mathematicalized. It embraced mathematical modeling, econometrics, and philosophical positivism. Because Austrian school economics is largely opposed to these methodologies, it became increasingly marginalized from the profession.

It is ironic that Hayek's 1974 Nobel win helped renew interested in Austrian school economics. You can make a pretty strong case that Hayek is not, in fact, an Austrian school economist. At the least he represents a tradition distinct from Mises and Rothbard.

I have always supported doing our best to keep as many people alive as possible until the vaccine came along, but I have always been open to the possibility that I was wrong. I have had the Moderna vaccine already due to my heart condition and the fact that I am in Florida which prioritizes vaccines according to risk and not politics (my only side effect was a sore arm and feeling under the weather for a day), and I am not going to lay awake at night worrying about this, but if Lubos Motl is right and at least among the elderly, the vaccine kills somewhere around 1 in 1500...

https://motls.blogspot.com/2021/01/in-norway-vaccines-might-kill-more.html#more

On the other hand, the risk of death to these elderly people of the disease itself is closer to 1 in 150 due to their age, which is much higher than the risk to the general public that Lubos is using as a comparison.

I think one of the interesting differences between Judaism and Christianity is that Judaism is more a religion of practice than belief, while Christianity is more a religion of belief than practice.

Judaism provides the foundational mythology that helps to define the Hebrews as a unique people and continues to do so to this day. It's remarkable that Paul was able to take that, Jewish apocalypticism, and Hellenism and create a mythology that defined a new community not based on geography, nationalism, language, or adherence to a prescribed law but rather faith in the Passion of Jesus.

I am more than happy to defend what I do and say. So, first, what does this have to do with "New Age cults"? It doesn't make much sense to attribute the effects of the '94 crime bill to "Joe Biden," when it had wide bipartisan support. Some of its strongest supporters were the Congressional Black Caucus and Jim Clyburn. A coalition of black mayors also strongly supported its passing, and black Americans were more supportive of its passage than white Americans. Most of the increases in incarceration occurred in the 15 years or so before the bill was even passed. In fact, the '94 crime bill had at most a modest effect on mass incarceration rates in the US. To say it was responsible for "wrongly throwing millions...in prison" is not true.

You just yakkety-yak and speculate - ignoring all proof I give you.

I would quarrel with your word "proof" there. It doesn't even really differentiate if "New Age cults" are a cause or an effect. Anti-porn activists used to point out that serial killers often had habits of viewing pornography and that this was evidence that pornography influenced serial murder and violence against women.

This pattern of creating a “crisis” and using it to consolidate unopposed power is as old as civilization.

Does that fact make 9/11 truthers correct? Does that mean the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax? Does it validate the LaRouche movement?

I'm pretty sure I've copped to the liking to argue part, but that's not to say that I argue for the sake of it or play devil's advocate or act contrarian. I believe what I think. I enjoy a conflict of ideas because it exposes my own thought process to criticism and comment from others and it exposed me to other points of view I may not yet have considered. I find that much more stimulating than being the 50th person to say the exact same thing.

What I am not particularly fond of is a conflict of personalities, especially between strangers. If you want to attack my arguments, by all means give it to me with both barrels. If you want to attack me, fuck off.

p.s. I mean the editorial you not the you you.

And of course it isn't possible that two people could just have different ideas and points of view about a huge subject like theology. Oh no, it must be an opportunity for you to criticize me in some way. Just like Jesus would've done!

Judaism is a separate religion from Christianity. It does not accept the notion that Jesus is Messiah or was resurrected never to die again or changed the original covenant. Perhaps you can explain the abstract truths of the Torah and the Talmud to them. Let them know the last 1500 years of rabbinic Judaism has been a waste of time.

mockturtle said...

...it must be an opportunity for you to criticize me in some way like Jesus would've done!

Jesus roundly criticized the Pharisees on many occasions. He called them fools, blind guides and vipers. He said, "Ye are of your father the devil". Even so, when Jesus returns, the believing Jews will recognize him as Messiah.

J. Farmer said...

@mockturtle:

Even so, when Jesus returns, the believing Jews will recognize him as Messiah.

I understand that's what you believe, but I am not talking about theology. I was only describing what I considered an interesting distinction between the nature of the two religions. I think in a certain way you can read Christianity as a kind of critique of 1st century Judaism. I think you can see a somewhat similar dynamic between Hinduism and Buddhism, which also share common origins and a lot of vocabulary and practices but in which Buddhism nonetheless develops as a form of critique of Brahmanical practices.
