"If you read his speech and listen to it carefully, much of it is thinly-veiled innuendo calling us white supremacists, calling us racists, calling us every name in the book, calling us people who don't tell the truth."

Said Rand Paul on Fox News last night, quoted in "Power Up: Unity in Washington will be harder than Biden makes it sound" (WaPo)("Some Republicans such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) even trashed Biden's speech itself, which was widely-lauded for its appeals for Americans to set aside their political differences and work together for a better country").

If I had a little more time at the moment, I'd go through the speech line by line and look for every phrase that can be interpreted as saying that Rand Paul and whoever he thinks of as "us" are white supremacists, racists, liars, or whatever other names might be in that book.

ADDED: Here's Rand Paul's Fox News segment with the "thinly-veiled innuendo" charge:

Paul cites a particular line in the speech: "And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured." According to Paul, the "gist" of what Biden was saying there is that his political opponents manufacture and manipulate the truth.

AND: Without yet going through the comments to see your suggestions, I have read the speech to look for what can be characterized as the "thinly-veiled innuendo" Paul was talking about. Here's what I found:
And now arise a political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat.

Literally, Biden is not calling anyone a white supremacist, a racist,  a domestic terrorist, or a political extremist. He identifies the quality — extremism, supremacy, terrorism — and vows to fight the abstractions, not the actual people. These things don't exist without people, and yet, it's clever, because who wants to say That's me? Rand Paul's "us" can't say That's about us unless they cop to being racists, white supremacists, or domestic terrorists.

Uniting to fight the foes we face: anger, resentment and hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness, and hopelessness.

I note the use of the word "fight," the word that Trump was denounced for using in his January 6th speech. Trump stands accused of — impeached for — inciting an insurrection for saying, "We fight like Hell and if you don’t fight like Hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore."

But Biden says "fight" — "fight the foes." And yet his "foes" are not human beings. His foes are abstractions: "anger, resentment and hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness, and hopelessness."

Is he really referring to people? You can't have any of those things without people, and some of those things come from within people and characterize those people as The Other, most notably the first 4 things on that list: anger, resentment, hatred, extremism. And yet Biden did not say the angry, resentful people are foes. He takes a hate-the-sin-love-the-sinner position.

But there's no expression of love for these angry, resentful people. And I don't get the sense that he means to say all anger is wrong and needs to be stamped out. He expressed support for the racial justice movement, and it certainly involves a great deal of expression of anger —  anger, resentment, hatred, extremism. Those angry people are respected in their anger. Their anger is justified. So anger per se is not the foe.

We can deliver racial justice and we can make America once again, the leading force for good in the world.

He almost said "Make America great again."

I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days. I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. But I also know they are not new. Our history has been a constant struggle between the American ideal, that we all are created equal, and the harsh ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, demonization have long torn us apart.

Again, the literal attack is on the abstraction: "racism, nativism, fear, demonization." But these are things that only exist within human beings. So it is a thinly-veiled attack on racists, nativists, fear-mongers, and demonizers. And, again, who wants to say That sounds like you're talking about me

Well, Rand Paul does. It's hard to admit, but Biden will get away with demonizing his opponents if no one admits it. Obviously, a small set of Americans will openly take on the label of "racist" or "nativist," but Paul isn't talking about them. He's saying, I believe, that Biden is stoking hostility that is aimed at the millions of Americans who agreed with the Trump policies that Trump's opponents have denounced as racist.

Let’s begin to listen to one another again, hear one another, see one another, show respect to one another. Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire, destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war. And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured.

I included that because Paul himself cited that line. I observe that Trump himself continually denounced "the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured." But Trump didn't pontificate about unity at the same time. Trump forthrightly attacked his foes.

It's important to acknowledge that Biden doesn't demand that his opponents shut up entirely:

To all those who did not support us, let me say this. Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart. If you still disagree, so be it....

You can keep fighting, but fight within a system of good order:

That’s America, the right to dissent peaceably within the guard rails of our Republic is perhaps this nation’s greatest strength. Yet hear me clearly, disagreement must not lead to disunion....

 No insurrection, please.

[T]he answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who don’t look like you or worship the way you do, or don’t get their news from the same sources you do. We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal…

I need to give this my tag "civility bullshit," because I think that means now that my side has the power, let's be nice. Your side did not play nice when it was out of power. Did you ever tell your people to stand down when it was not in your political interest?

***

And let me quote one more thing, because I want to quote an annotation that appears in The Washington Post's copy of the speech transcript. From the speech:

There is truth, and there are lies — lies told for power and for profit, and each of us has a duty and a responsibility as citizens, as Americans, and especially as leaders, leaders who have pledged to honor our Constitution and protect our nation to defend the truth and defeat the lies.

The WaPo annotation:

This is one of the prominent features of Biden's speech: While calling for unity, an acknowledgment that some of his opponents aren't on the level and that their influence must be dealt with. Biden didn't use his speech to call out individuals who purveyed the theory that his win wasn't legitimate, but he seems to recognize that, without addressing the proliferation of falsehoods, his agenda will be difficult to enact. For a man who emphasizes conciliation, it was certainly a notable choice.

"Cloaked in an appeal to unity, President Biden’s inaugural speech hit all the expected themes of racial resentment and blame."
...
"This characterization of America’s worsening racism is not just factually ungrounded, it is also a tasteless rhetorical move in an inaugural address. Reflexive invocations of “systemic racism” and “white supremacy” have become the Tourette’s Syndrome of left-wing professors and activists. They are au courant, shallow terms of the moment, lacking depth or weight."

I mean, just the first paragraph implies that Republicans are NOT democracy, and that you can only have Democracy under people like Biden. It's very clearly saying, "you didn't have Democracy the last four years."

Paragraph 4 doesn't even try to whisper it: "A cry that can’t be any more desperate or any more clear, and now arise a political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat."

It is good to know Lincoln is a good guy again, since Biden is quoting him.

Check out the (short) derb item "Who Is a White Supremacist?" and see the problem is first of all that it doesn't mean anything. It lumps a lot of benign stuff onto something hated that no longer exists.

Temujin said...

"widely-lauded"

Yes, his speech was widely lauded by the same people who will be lauding everything he does right down to taking a crap. He's a Democrat. The media are all Party members. It's like listening to Pravda tell us how wonderful Putin's horse riding is. Or Xinhua News Agency tell us how Xi has a higher IQ than any living world leader. (like our press did with Obama). By the way, they are already well into lauding Dr. Jill for bringing fashion and style back to Washington DC. Again, we just had the most beautiful First Lady in history leave. An actual international model. They panned her for four years. Now a schlumpy faux professor comes along and...Zowee! Fashion City!

There are 27,000+ troops in DC. Razor wire on 12' reinforced fences. National Guardsmen at state capitols from coast to coast. All because of a few crazies who stormed the US Capitol. And those crazies were from both sides of the aisle. They are creating a new fiction, a new narrative. White people on the loose.

Meanwhile, the cities across the US burned all summer with approval, many protestors lauded for their sense of 'justice'. Businesses were looted or burned down. People lost their livelihoods. Portland and Seattle still have nightly riots and protests, including last night. People cannot walk in the streets of any of our cities. Chicago is a mess. Baltimore, Portland, Seattle, LA, San Francisco, Milwaukee. Name the city, then name the Party.

And Biden's team is already working on redefining what is and who is a White Supremacist and how to remove them from society. The word 'Unity' is also being redefined.

The next few years will redefine the word 'Orwellian'.

Whatever President Biden does, that second is exactly how the lefties I know best will interpret it. I know better than to ask if they're all cool with the slew of executive orders, because of course it's cool when the good guys do it. It's scary and dictatorial when the bad guys do it.

That is absolutely right. Context matters with a speech like this. I did read the transcript, and it is entirely possible to read the parts Senator Paul objected to as a condemnation of the White Supremacists who have been out and about lately and of liars like HRC, who cooked up the Russia collusion narrative and continues to promote it four years later. There is no context offered in the speech after all, for who the liars are Biden is decrying.

But then, Biden himself was part of that WH meeting with Obama that decided to promote, investigate and prosecute people involved in what they knew to be a hoax, so, no, I don't believe that is what he meant. I'm afraid Rand Paul is probably right. The bad actors Biden called out, while not specified in most cases, are meant to be interpreted as bad actors on the right.

And, because the press and Antifa and BLM and Schumer and the rest of the Left's agitation machine will quiet down, it will be hard to ignore the impression that if you want peace, you must elect Democrats, which is one way to read this speech.

The FBI can create such a report; it doesn't make it true. It's not, but any objective measure. It's a flat-out lie. I suspect both you and Biden know that, and that you're both gaslighting.

this by no means represents the majority of Trump voters nor does Biden suggest that is the case.

Oh I believe he very much thinks that, or wants people to believe that's the case. It isn't Proud Boys and neo Nazi groups that are being threatened with censure; that happened years ago. It's regular Trump voters or people who spoke out in favor of Trump who are now being hounded out of their jobs, torn up on social media, and the like.

Unfortunately there does seem to be a strong element of white backlash based on misinformation and the insecurity of a more diverse nation that could, for example, elect a black Senator from Georgia

No misinformation at all. It's not about "white backlash" - that's just another gaslighting chickenshit term. It's about the fact that the American culture itself is being attacked and erased by people that view this country as a horrible place that must be changed into something it was never meant to be. That's most certainly happening, and no amount of flowery words is going to change that.

but hopefully as the economy picks up for middle class and blue collar workers this sentiment will lessen..

This is just pure nonsense. Blue collar workers were doing fine under Trump until Covid hit, when DEMOCRAT governors shut down their states and killed the economy while it was chugging along. The Chamber of Commerce and Big Business want cheap labor, so they'll back another trade agreement of some sort that will kill jobs for the middle class and blue collar workers. Trump was the only president in several generations to try to address that.

You are flat-out looney-tunes, RV. Not a shred of what you typed has anything resembling what's actually happening out there. Do better.

We know FBI Special Agent Joe Pientka was ordered to stand down in is defined job description of vetting the accuracy of the Steele dossier. He was reassigned to get him out of the way. We have known this since 2018 from Senate hearings, that were immediately sealed, with the approval of Republicans.
Just a coincidence that all investigations into Senator Burr's insider stock trading has
been recently cancelled by the DoJ, Tues, Jan 19,2020. Just a coincidence.

Now, should you try to refocus your small mind on domestic matters then I simply point to the last twelve months of American history, and let us tally up the death and destruction coast to coast and it is quite clear by using factual metrics to determine that so-called "anti-fascists" and "anti-racists" have caused 92% of riot deaths and destroyed cities and actually engaged police and federal agents in battle, including violating the Geneva Convention by shining lasers into the cops' eyes and attempting to burn down a federal courthouse.

Here's your answer Inga. It's because we've been called Nazis, Fascists, and White Supremacists for years. We have been chased out of speaking engagements at too many universities to count. We are not allowed to be hired into universities and, by chance, if we do sneak in, we are refused tenure. We have book deals taken away from publishers. We have (had?) one network that would even attempt to present a balanced view of things, and that network is constantly excoriated for showing the conservative view of things. Or, just telling the truth- such as in the fake Russia Collusion or Hunter Biden cases when the entire media complex was all in on the Big Lies. And as we speak, CNN and NBC are trying to get that network removed, shut down, or just shut up.

We watch as our schools burn books under the watchful eyes of the Left gatekeepers. As the curricula of those schools remove the classics because 'White Men' and replace them with mediocre fill-ins because 'diversity'. Or just remove Western Civ entirely to replace with Victim Studies.

If we question anything- from Covid shut downs or mask use to Global Warming/Cooling/Climate Change, we are not just 'deniers', but should be shut up, taken away, and never heard from again.

I could write a list that goes on for a day. But the Left has never been open to an actual discussion. Attacks are the only discussion from the Left. As we've seen so much, heard so much, and continue to see what's unfolding in front of us, you bet we take seriously and personally what Biden and his people say. The amazing thing is that you don't as well.

My entire life I heard how those on Left were the overseers of free speech, of equality of opportunity, of anti-fascism. What we have seen is our 'friends' on the Left looking to shut us down, censor our thoughts, or words- written or spoken. And the fascists? They are all on the Left. From Antifa to BLM to the leaders in academia and the press only too anxious to shut down any discourse.

After years of the Left changing the meaning of words and parading around podiums giving national speeches, spouting bullshit with nice sounding phrases that have zero meaning or sincerity to them (think: Barack Obama), we've learned to understand what you mean by words like 'Unity'. 'Equity'. 'Diversity'. 'Hope & Change'.

They are not what we used to think they meant. Unity- to the Left, means conformity. Submission. Think like us and we'll have unity. Think differently and you will find you no longer have a job, or a business, or the ability to write or speak in public, or a news source that is allowed.

The Left has been the scourge of humanity for over 100 years. I see no change in that. So, yeah- I take Biden's words personally. At best he's a shill.

Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war. And we must reject the culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured.

The inclusion of "manufactured" is interesting. Do you suppose Joe is referring to the left's claim more than 1 in 5 women on campus are sexually assaulted during a 4 year term, a rate greater than anywhere else in the world including countries experiencing civil war? Could he be referring to Elizabeth Warren's propaganda opus claiming half of all American personal bankruptcies are due to medical bills?

These claims were the result of the left's corrupting academia and government (the "studies" were supported by government grants) from advancing our understanding of reality to manufacturing fraudulent data points to support the left's legislative agenda. Since reality does not support their agenda they've created their own. The left's media allies use this propaganda to drive hysteria which their allied politicians use to justify their legislation.

Somehow I doubt Joe or any leftist has any desire to limit the manufacture of "facts".

Except, Trump had nothing to gain from a riot that day. It was the day scheduled for the Senate publicly to debate the irregularities in the vote. It was literally Trump's last chance to force transparency in those states.

Obviously, a riot would slow or end the debate and could be used (as it has) as a symbol of Trump's dangerousness. Putting aside all the evidence that Antifa, BLM and others instigated the riot, asking who would benefit from the riot suggests heavily that the Left had every reason and Trump had none.

The best part about that story?

Inga claimed it never happened because Christopher Steele provided his testimony via deposition and not in a London courtroom!!!

Inga demanded to see pictures of Steele walking into a courtroom otherwise in her strange world it never happened!

Classic Inga.

Strange how Mitt Romney supported voting for Biden. Sort of makes your assertion fall apart.

-- I feel... I feel as though the trap that was laid for you didn't register.

The reason I think Biden thinks all Republicans are extremists is because he said Mitt Romney -- who you just acknowledged is a Republican who supported Biden -- wanted to re-enslave black Americans. Which is my entire point: I believe Biden thinks all Republicans are extremists because even the LEAST extreme Republican he treats as the most extreme.

You do understand the logic going on here, right?

"So why are you assuming Biden meant you, the average Trump supporter? “

Setting aside the fact that you guys used exactly the same kinds of assumptions to paint Trump as an irredeemable racist when there is zero evidence that this was ever true, maybe it’s because the press has been painting the hundreds of thousands of people who went to DC to show their support for an examination of the election results in a court of law as “insurrectionists.”

Anybody who questions whether the elections were fair and honest, despite the fact that there is mounds of evidence that they were not is an “insurrectionist” Demcocrats wanted to get Congresspeople who objected to the electoral vote counts booted for Congress despite the fact that Democrats have objected to those same counts the last three times that a Republican was elected.

The stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop are still suppressed and anybody who mentions them is accused of being a Russian agent or a traitor. There is plenty of evidence in the public domain, and was before the crackhead even forgot about his laptop at that shop that the Bidens are corrupt.

Now the laptop guy’s business has been destroyed and he has been accused of being a hacker and a Russian agent.

So maybe Inag, you guys should narrow the focus of your rhetoric instead of engaging in this gaslighting campaign. LOL, I kid, I kid, gaslighting is what you guys specialize in.

True healing and reunification would require that both sides honestly self reflect, understand and openly admit their own failings, and be willing to truly understand the otherside's positions without demonizing them or insulting them. So far I don't see any real evidence of these things occuring. And I'm highly doubtful that Biden and the rest of the current leadership have either the desire or capability do what is required to heal this country.

For my part, I bear no ill will toward most of the Biden voters as well as the general lumpenprole the make up the Democrat's base. I honestly don't believe that most of them are bad people, just a little foolish. And I'm a little frustrated with them at times.

I reserve my hatred for those in power, those who rule us with some pretense of moral superiority, as well as their enablers in the media. For them, a divided populace can be useful, even necessary. To push forward their agenda they need crisises. They need to agitate one group against another. They need to antagonize, inflame, and demonize one group to convince the rest that there needs to be new laws, new legislation to address the problems they themselves have created.

Unfortunately at this point, the larger mainstream group of people can't quite see this. They're too disctracted or mislead.

At least 68% of eligible voters voted nationwide. In some states like Oklahoma, only 55% voted. In other states voter participation hit 80%. This is odd. No way fraud occurred on election day at the polls. But something is off about the mail in votes.
We need a random survey of the mail in voters to make sure that these people actually voted. Check their signatures too.

Its a mistake to recite history to democraticals/LLR-lefties. First, they cant remember anything beyond 15 minutes ago (see: everything Inga has written for as long as she has been an adult). Second, democraticals simply make up history as they go. See readering turning Stalin into a hero by invading Poland from the east as Hitler invaded from the west. Readering literally did not know about the Hitler-Stalin pact (Ribbentropp/Molotov).

Also recall that Inga literally called the 100+ million murdered by communists in the 20th century a conspiracy.

See the pattern again?
