Trump is WAY too nice. Barr should be in prison for this. How is *preventing* subpoenas that would otherwise have gone out any less "election interference" than issuing them?
There's some doctrine, Qwinn, some dusty old norm or tradition of the DOJ not interfering in elections, which Barr cited as his rationale for suppressing info about the Biden investigations in the immediate period prior to an election. It's a lovely thought, quaint in fact. I have a hard time reconciling the fiery Barr of the amicus brief that got him the Trump job and what he said in interviews about the attempted coup and spying on Trump campaign and admin, with the Barr of today invoking norms that obviously don't exist any longer as a justification for his interference. Strange one.

The non-interference policy didn't apply as Hunter Biden was never a candidate, and it also didn't apply as the investigation started before Biden was the nominee.
Barr's behavior is unconscionable. Is the job impossible? Every person who holds it seems to leave in disgrace.
Barr's keeping the Hunter Biden investigation quiet is what's supposed to happen. The fact that DOJ/FBI behaved disgracefully with leaks and/or official publicity on both the Clinton and the Trump investigations in 2016 doesn't make it okay to do the same thing in 2020. In fact, they show why that's what's supposed to happen.
There's a lot of press that portrays Barr as loyal to Trump, but I think that mistakes their relationship entirely. He owes Trump nothing. This isn't even Barr's first time as AG -- so he doesn't even need the prestige as a capstone to his career, since he already had it. Nor would it exactly be shameful to be dismissed by Trump if that were how things turned out. I think Barr took the job because he saw institutional rot at DOJ that needed cleaning out, and his objectives aligned directionally with Trump's.
He's not in it to help Trump per se, other than maybe buttering him up now and again to secure room to operate, and he never was.
Rather than ride it out for a few more weeks he chose to resign. There's more to the story...........

To me, "interference in the election" would be to either pursue an investigation that would not have been pursued in the absence of the election, or to NOT pursue an investigation that WOULD have been pursued in the absence of an election. Barr did the latter.
Non-interference would be to investigate what needs to be investigated *regardless* of when the next election is due.

I have no doubt Barr believes he has received adequate assurance by all relevant players that what the democraticals pulled in 2015/2016/2017/2018 will never be allowed to happen again, and with those assurances Barr seeks to protect the institutions and their capabilities. Barr is after all a consummate lover of our institutions.
This move also makes sense if Barr believes Trump is seriously considering key declassifications and pardons which Barr might otherwise disagree with and, as is the way its supposed to be, steps down instead of staying on the inside to thwart legal Presidential actions and perogatives.
Barr wrote a very nice resignation letter citing Trump's many achievements. He didn't have to do that. I don't expect a tell-all book either.
So what is the point in leaving a month early? It strengthens John Durham as an independent prosecutor.
After the election, Barr announced that he had secretly changed John Durham status to special counsel in his investigation of the origins of the Obama Administration's Trump-Russia probe. This allows him to remain doing his job in the Biden Administration. It will be interesting to see if Biden finds an excuse to fire Durham.
It was just reported that Durham has expanded his staff. Barr should know what Durham has brewing. Given everything we now know, it should be good.

Regarding delayed subpoenas, if physical evidence is time-critical or you probably wouldn't use a subpoena -- you'd just conduct a raid and seize the evidence. And over 2020, I can say a lot of investigations got slowed down due to coronavirus and federal workers all working from home. There were several months in which everything got postponed and very few interviews or (for civil agencies) testimony were carried out as people waited to see whether they could resume in-person meetings (spoiler: they could not). In August, the agencies I deal with still seemed to be working out the kinks with remote testimony and interviews. Document collection, particularly for hardcopy documents, has also been challenging. I haven't been back to my DC office since early February, and there's a whole protocol I would need to follow if I were to come in to review hardcopy to respond to a subpoena. I'd do it if I had to, obviously, but it's a lot slower than it otherwise would be. In this year of all years, delaying a subpoena a month or two is not going to make a meaningful difference to the progress of an investigation.

This is how I view it as well. There was a allegedly "contentious" (MSM word)meeting after Barr said the fraud that occurred wasn't enough to change the election.
I can easily see Barr - with his Cheshire smile - offering to resign during that meeting. Trump supposedly raged again last week about the Hunter reveal. Barr says - Okay buddy, I offered to resign before. Now take it or leave it.
Barr never wanted this job, he didn't ask for this job, and he has served far more honorably than any other AG since, perhaps, the Bush days. Sessions may have had some honor, but he was incompetent.

The states conducted the elections according to their election laws, tallied the votes, recounted when required, appointed electors and certified the elector's votes which determined that Biden had won.
Fifty-five law suits (and counting) were filed and were rejected by the courts or were withdrawn by the plaintiffs. The plaintiffs are saddled with providing proof - something that none could show but "Barnes Law" would already know about court cases.

It was too easy for Trump to use the "you're fired" line. Somebody with political experience might know how to influence and direct and coordinate and finesse subordinates, with firing or forced resignation as the last step. Also, a more experienced politician would know that there are multiple channels to go through to get things done, so that it doesn't always become a matter of one person getting the boot for not doing what could have been achieved in other ways.
