"Trump is a more caricatured version of masculinity — aggressive, physically tough, physically strong, never back down."

"What Biden is offering is a more complex 21st-century version of masculinity. It’s compassion and empathy and care and a personal narrative of loss ."

Said Jackson Katz, who's made a documentary called "The Man Card: Presidential Masculinity from Nixon to Trump," quoted in "Trump, Biden and masculinity in the age of coronavirus" by Matt Viser (WaPo).
Both Biden and Trump are targeting a swath of White working-class voters in the industrial Midwest...
At an anti-sexual-assault rally in 2018, Biden told a crowd at the University of Miami, “If we were in high school, I’d take [Trump] behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.” He later expressed modest regret for the comment. “I’ve been in a lot of locker rooms my whole life,” Biden added. “I’m a pretty damn good athlete. Any guy that talked [the way Trump does] was usually the fattest, ugliest SOB in the room.”
At the time, Trump had a rejoinder. “He is weak, both mentally and physically, and yet he threatens me, for the second time, with physical assault,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “He doesn’t know me, but he would go down fast and hard, crying all the way. Don’t threaten people Joe!”

Biden has obviously enriched himself and his family for decades with all sorts of deals with foreign companies in exchange for influence at the expense of US tax payers and US security. To me Biden doesn't seem like someone who has a great deal of empathy for the common person. To me he seems to think of the common, working class person as a sucker or rube.

"the American people are stupid and will support anything that sounds good.” - (attributed to Biden, who evidently "bellowed" this at Union lobbyist Stephen Silbiger)

Sounds like a conclusion in search of a justification. Your excerpt below illustrates that. I think the thing with Biden is that he has no centre at all. There is no "real Joe Biden," no there there. He's a corrupt poll who is pretty moderate because he finds that the easiest way to assemble a winning coalition. He himself has no guiding principles.

Julia Louis Dreyfus in Veep has made me even more cynical of politics; I can't help looking for bits of Selena Meyer in every politician and the only one I can think of who has no Selena at all in him is Trump. He's a whole other bag. Joe Biden, on the other hand, is all Selena Meyer.

Right, ‘Pop' Biden is more like one of those fancy mob bosses who doesn’t like to get his hands dirty.

Don’t worry about not following the NYPost story though, I am sure that all of the information from the first broadside from the New York Times and Washington Post and Twitter got all of the information out there, and that none of these proofs of Federal crimes involving Biden dripping out are real. Even though Hunter Biden’s lawyer asked for his hard drive back. Won’t it be fun to have an independent counsel hounding Biden until he is forced to resign?

Of course People who love Trump love his style.

What's to like about Biden's Style? the odd old blankness.. the puppet quality? the 'he's not Trump, good enough' quality?

What matters in this election in principle.

Do you want leftwing lies? Excused antifa thuggery? Biden family corruption?
A corrupt media that shares a bed with Tech Oligarchs who hate Trump so much they are happy to use censorship to get their man elected?

Is that the clever style we need?

Ha, that's funny. Hair sniffing, p*ssy fingering, and f*cked up children isn't what I would call nuanced 21st-century masculinity. What Joe has is an easy going public personality. It is no more indicative of the man than the public personas of John Kennedy or Johnny Carson. Or of Donald Trump, for that matter.

Bullshit alert.

See Joe Biden responding to an Iowa voter here:

https://youtu.be/fbEJpr4A9mQ

The Trump campaign should make an ad of this. Hell Iowa should. I was falling for the argument that Iowa should not get to go first, their argument to retain this—along with New Hampshire’s has been that it is important for voters to get access to the candidates. Force the candidate to do retail politics. The insulation of Biden has proven Iowa and New Hampshire to be absolutely correct. The media has failed American voters.

If you want more of a Biden failing at retail politics see him in action here in Michigan.

Mickey Kaus compares or contrasts today's "Petrified Zombie Biden" with the "middle-aged Full-strength Boastful Biden." Biden is trying to make an asset out of his cognitive decline. I've already called his run the "Regarding Henry campaign," after the Nineties film where Harrison Ford, a nasty, egotistical professional, is shot in the head and becomes almost saintly after losing half his IQ.

Biden in his prime wasn't so different from Trump when it came to egotism or narcissism. He still isn't. But in fifty years in politics, he learned how to press the flesh in public and give an impression of empathy and concern, and as his mind goes, he becomes avuncular and even grandfatherly. A young or middle aged man who talks about himself gets labelled a narcissist, egotist, or braggart. Once you get old enough, going on and on about what happened to you 60 years ago can become endearing. Living in Memoryland isn't a great quality for a leader, though.

The Men's Studies approach to political analysis doesn't really wear well. Remember the Seventies talk about Jimmy Carter's "androgeny"?

How times has Biden challenged people to feats of physical strength? 6? 10? 20? How often does President Trump threaten to take a person out back? A number so close to zero it is indistinguishable from zero?

From prison, Cooney provided Schweizer with written authorization, his email account name, and password to his Gmail account to retrieve these emails. He authorized, in writing, the publication of these emails— notable because it is the first time a close associate has publicly confirmed Hunter’s trading on his father’s influence.

The emails offer a unique window into just how the Biden universe conducted business during the Obama-Biden Administration. These associates sought to trade on Hunter Biden’s relationship with, and access to, his father and the Obama-Biden White House in order to generate business.

Cook. There is nothing about Trump that suggests he is physically tough or strong in the sense of his being "masculine."

Speaking from my point of view as a woman....masculinity doesn't always mean a muscle bound body or the ability to lift up big things. In fact, a muscle bound beach bod is nice to look at, but doesn't necessarily conflate to being a masculine man. Nice to look at, but often useless.

Masculine men are confident in themselves. Capable in what they do be it accounting, mechanics or building. Encouraging and supportive of others. They are action and results oriented. Git'r done kind of guys. Masculine men are someone you can count on. Masculine men are also protective and considerate of others, while being strong emotionally. This doesn't mean unfeeling. It is emotion when appropriate. And especially, refusing to be anyone's doormat or bend for political correct motives.

Winston Churchill is no one's idea of a 'studly' man, however his daring, defiant, protective, brave attitude is definitely masculine. And an inspiration for other.

Joe Biden is the exact opposite of a masculine man. He has all the swagger but none of the guts or fortitude it takes to be a real man. Self serving, conniving, corrupt and INEFFECTUAL. Taking credit for the actions and words of other people because he is unable to do for himself.

You can have one aspect..and strong or you can have the characteristic that I suggest. Both are a bonus...... but if only one, I take the man without the muscular bod.

Regarding the topic, such as it is, of this post-- isn't that description of Biden what they used to call "metrosexual"? I confess I'm not up on all this. For all I know "metrosexual" is considered offensive now. The Newspeak Dictionary is constantly revised.

The simple fact--which everyone knows on some level, even if they plan to vote for him--is that Biden is failing mentally, from a level that never inspired much respect or confidence before.

Sure, Obama made him his VP, but those of us who were once managers in competitive industries know that B-managers hire C-subordinates, whereas A-managers hire A-subordinates.

I submit that the latter partly explains the churn amongst the Presidential appointees early in the Trump administration: A-subordinates are hard to find.

My personal experience bears out both branches of this observation on managers.

Biden's aides need to regurgitate Charlottesville lies and need Trump to continuously renounce white supremacy in the hopes black voters will draw the conclusion they want...need black voters to conclude. Democrats CANNOT afford black voter defectors...

So Biden hides while Trump puts up with the media corruption, meets them on their turf to play their games, looking stronger for the effort...

We know all about Trump. We have watched him all our lives. Constantly in the news, on TV, now as President for four years. We saw his marriages, we saw his impressive family led by him. We saw his companies and employees under his leadership. Very little has been hidden, because people wanted to find dirt for fame and fortune, and during the last five years that has become the search for the holy grail for thousands if not millions of Trump haters. After all that effort and exposure we have nothing much in the way of real dirt other than somebody's subjective opinion.

We also know a lot about Biden, despite the efforts to hide anything negative, the effort has been the opposite as toward Trump. It's hiding, excusing, and dismissing of some of the worst corruption and dishonesty ever seen in a man. He's been cheating and lying and plagiarizing and sniffing and penetrating his whole career.

Just imagine if Hunter was Trump's son, or Trump plagiarized multiple times to get ahead in his career, or Trump had a charge of digital penetration of a woman at work. That's a perfect example of the difference. What happened to her story? The creepy porn lawyer was on TV over a hundred times over an alleged consensual sexual encounter with a woman who did it for a living.

Trump is the most exposed person who ever was President, and there is nothing much to see except success and love of country.

The point is obscured, of course, as it asserts that these qualities are true, with respect to these two particular men, which most certainly is not correct in several ways. But let us assume it is so.

The alleged Trumpian qualities are real ones - they can be observed and compared between men in all the necessary contests between men, for dominance, for survival, for glory. This is the stuff one can see and hear with ones own eyes and ears. These are the qualities of the athlete and warrior. It all can of course be sung about by some troubador, but the troubadors lies can be checked.

The alleged Biden qualities are not simply perceptions, but stories - "narrative of loss". Its all literature, and HAS to be sung about by the troubadors.

Trump isn't the guy who challenges people to fistfights and pushup contests when his amour propre is offended. That's Biden. Trump swans around in suits, famously gold plates everything in his home, has a fake tan, minces in public, and has never engaged in any of the conventional American theater of masculinity (e.g. John Kerry going hunting). He is the least conventionally macho US president in my life.

mockturtle @4:41 PM: DBQ @3:41. "This woman agrees with you. :-)"

And this man agrees with both of you women! Well stated, DBQ.

Biden is trash. Just admit it and cleanse your soul, vote Libertarian if you must, but send that sorry sack back to Delaware and his pile of ill-gotten wealth before he harms anyone else. At least you can take comfort that the Ukrainians, Chinese, and God knows who else, won't see any more return on their investments. Assuming that you care.

Enough with this nonentity, already. Life is short.

Chris Wallace is very dubious about the e-mails.

I think he owes Uncle Joe The Godfather a favor or two.

Being a Godfather of a crime family seem masculine to me. Doesn't it?

Joe is what The Godfather would have been if Fredo succeeded him.

tim in vermont @5:14: "Nothing is more scary to them than an honest man." That sums it up quite nicely. The honest man is always made a pariah by the corrupt.

It usually ends badly for the honest man, but in this case he is not alone. And we are armed.

Both Trump and Biden are braggarts.

Biden uses the very real tragedy in his life -- the death of his first wife and baby daughter in an accident and the cancer death of his older son -- to "humanize" himself. John Edwards did the same with the death of his son in a car crash. I think it's supposed to appeal to women.

I believe in their grief, but using it politically is offensive. My brother's death didn't make me a better, or worse, person, nor did it qualify me to be president of the United States.

Here we go again: a "liberal," "progressive" or some other variety of statist using the words "compasssion," "empathy" and "care" to mean "generous with someone else's money." Or: "buying votes with the taxpayer's dollar."

""He is the most flawed person I have ever met in my life,”

Does anyone really believe that? Kelly is lying. What he is really saying is that he can't understand how a flawed person could be so successful - a billionaire, with a beautiful wife, a successful, healthy family that loves and respects him, the most famous and powerful person on earth put their by a democratic election, who has accomplished some truely unprecedented things at home and abroad, despite constant attack. Yep, the most flawed person he every met.

Hell, Kamala Harris is more masculine than Joe Biden's shriveled, grandmotherly figure. No small wonder Joe will get pushed down a flight of stairs if they manage to beat Trump. The number one hazard for the elderly is falling in the home.

General John Kelly sums up Trump this way:The depths of his dishonesty is just astounding to me

Why do you lefties always make these general statements and never with an example?

I know, he exaggerates crowd size and things like that but I want a real lie. Surely you should be able to come up with one.

Joanne Jacobs: here in Georgia we have Lucy MacBath, a Democrat who, judging by her TV ads, is virtually running for office on her dead daughter's coffin. The daughter was killed by gunfire, but instead of making her tough on crime, it has made her tough on peaceful gun owners. The old A attacking B gives C (MacBath) the right to attack (initiate force against) D.

The Men's Studies approach to political analysis doesn't really wear well. Remember the Seventies talk about Jimmy Carter's "androgeny"?

Feminist Susan Faludi advised Al Gore to wear earth tones during the 2000 campaign to look more alpha male. I know Ann remembers "the Dingall-Norwood bill" moment from the 2000 debates because she has linked to it. Al tried to be a tough guy and it was laughable.

Having failed at projecting traditional masculinity, the Dems successfully went metrosexual in 2008 with Obama. But metrosexual doesn't fit with Biden's phony Joe Lunch Bucket routine.

Joe tries to project masculinity but it doesn't work - not because he's old but because he never really got tangled up with Corn Pop or did anything really, except successfully grift. But the Dems are trying to outlaw masculinity anyway - at least the white male variety - so it's all good.

Joanne Jacobs,

Biden's use of his wife's death is far more shameful than Edward's -- to the best of my recollection, Edwards did not persist in falsely blaming an innocent person in the accident for causing it.

If you are Biden or Trump you go to hospitals and try to look like you care. If people like you and want you there, they will think that you do care. The media like Biden (or at least hate Trump) and Biden's ads and surrogates keep calling him compassionate and empathetic, so the media report that Biden is compassionate and empathetic.

Journalists go to such great lengths to portray the two candidates as the opposites of each other that it obscures there similarities. Sometimes the contrasts really are great: Obama and McCain, Reagan and Mondale, Eisenhower and Stevenson, Truman and Dewey, Roosevelt and Hoover or Landon. Sometimes the differences aren't that great. Why do the Clintons, Bushes and Obamas get along so well? Because they aren't the total opposites that some people take them for. Bush and Gore (and even Bush and Kerry) had more in common than their supporters believed. Harvard and Yale or senator's son and senator's son aren't exactly worlds apart.

IIRC, I think that was Naomi Wolf who tried (unsuccessfully) to butch Gore up a bit.

So, who was the ‘bully’ in that situation? Seems like joe is the failed athlete weakling, who has been told that he won’t amount to anything as an athlete and resents the big bravado guy who has achieved things; he wants to go on the attack ‘just to show them’. He will fail, of course, then accuse the person he attacked as being the bully. This is the leftist way.

Biden is compassionate and caring? LOL! He snaps and snarks at anyone who questions him, it's just the corrupt media downplays it
